During the last month, our management company contracted with a contractor, Miller Construction Services, to reconstruct decks on the condominiums units. They, obviously, did not properly vet the contractor. The contractor used day laborers that did not speak English and were undocumented workers. The laborers changed from day to day. While working on my building, I caught a laborer digging up my plants. When I approached him, he dropped the plants and took off running. I looked further and saw that 2 other large plants had been dug up plus 2 smaller plants. In addition, the laborers had thrown a piece of plywood over a 3-year old delicate Japanese Maple that belonged to my next door neighbor. When they removed the piece of plywood, some branches broke off. The next day, I noticed that another Japanese Maple had been broken off at the ground level. None of this theft and damage was due to the plants being in the way of the work on the decks. I came back into my house with the intention of going back out to replant my plants. When I looked out my kitchen window, I saw a laborer throwing my plants in the back of his truck. By the time I got back outside, he was gone. The next day it was raining and they were not working, and as far as I know, they didn't return to the property until the next week. The crew that returned was not the same one that had been here previously. I tried to talk with the crew but they didn't speak English. I called Miller Construction and they said the Project Manager, Mike Massi, was on his way to the property. When he arrived, he had an engineer with him, and I explained to them what had occurred. I explained to them that the same laborers were not on the property so I couldn't point out those that had been involved with the theft and the damage to my plants. I didn't have the license number of the truck but was able to describe it. They took pictures of the holes, which were somewhat washed away due to the rains. They acknowledged the limbs that were broken off the Japanese Maple. The next week when I hadn't heard back from them, I called Miller Construction, and they told me they would get back with me. I continued calling on almost a daily basis and was continually told they would get back with me, but they didn't. Last week when I called, they told me they would not replace my plants and to never call their company again. Through all this, I was in contact with our condo management company. They led me down a path until the work was completed so I couldn't have the police out. If the police had arrived on the property, they would have seen the undocumented workers and proceeded with those charges also. Miller Construction is not a company anyone wants to do business for their future needs. The work was, also, not very good.
