Description of Work: Chris Ray Roofing (Ray Brothers) | |There is an old saying in the contracting businesses: "You can get it good. You can get it fast. You can get it cheap. Pick any two. |That is to say you can get it good and fast, but it won't be cheap. |You can even sometimes find a contractor who will squeeze you into their schedules and give you good and cheap, but it's not likely to be fast. |And you can always find someone who will do it cheap and fast, but it won't be good. |Good, cheap and fast; pick any two. |In the case of Chris Ray Roofing (Ray Brothers), I got a good new roof, fast. It wasn't cheap, but it wasn't a simple job either. I am satisfied with the job that was done and the way it was done, and the speed with which it was done. Let me explain. |I have an old family house in the historic district. Over 20 years ago, in my mid-fifties, I had a window of time between contracts and no money, but leaks were developing in my roof. So I re-roofed my house by myself, and did a pretty good job. It took me almost two months. |It was not a simple job. It's a two-story Victorian house with large attics under a steeply-pitched roof, and with dormers and an almost-flat roof over a half-hexagonal front porch with five 12-foot Doric columns, and a mildly-pitched roof over the back, with a skylight where the old kitchen fireplace used to be. |In addition to this complexity, there was an area of wooden roofing with a support beam that needed to be replaced. And although I had removed the old shingles on the front half of the house, I had run out of energy back then and just shingled-over the old shingles on the back half. In over a hundred years, that had never been done and there was a thick layer of a century's worth of old shingles to be removed. |It was complex, dirty and hard work. Chris, with his foreman on the ground, and three roofers up top, got it done and immaculately cleaned-up in five days. They worked late several days, beginning early Monday morning, but they worked steadily and by "quittin-time" Friday they were gone and my roofing problems were gone with them. |COST: I don't have my papers with me, but the bid was over $12,000. When the roof rot was more advanced and complex than we figured, the final cost edged just over $14,000. Not cheap... at least to an old guy living on social security and a shrinking nest egg. |WARRANTY: I bought the best architect asphalt shingles they make. They are covered by a manufacturer's warranty. And Chris guarantees his work and will come to the house if problems develop. Of course, the question with any small business is, "If problems do develop in 15 years, will he still be in business to honor his work?" The new owner will find out; the odds are I won't be here to know. |Would I hire Chris and his crew to do my job again? Yes. |
