We had a great experience with Greg and his crew. Project was slow to start because they were finishing other projects but our deck was completed within 3 weeks. Deck is beautiful and we have no complaints.

Description of Work: We hired Greg Di Bernardo, the owner of Bergen Decks, to build our back steps. His employee did a great job. Then the following year we hired him again to build the same steps for the front or our house. Trying to pinpoint a date was impossible. I called, my husband emailed him, he put us off and I felt like I had to beg him to get what he had promised us. I finally got disgusted and called him and left a voicemail and politely told him that we were going to move forward with someone else. I would not use his services again. In my opinion, his lack of professionalism in dealing with "us" not only lost him the job, but our respect as well. I just couldn't believe he would treat a repeat customer with such disregard.

Quality of work was very good. Contractor was personable and easy to deal with prior to signing contract. It was downhill from there. Deck was built in the fall of 2009. Contractor delayed in starting and project dragged on for lengthy period of time compared to what was promised (more than double). Communication with us during project was acceptable. Major mistake in steps was made. He built three steep steps (risers) instead of four (as in original plans) and contractor had to re-do them. Instead of apologizing and fixing them, he argued with us and told us he built it correctly - unbelievable. He wouldn't be held responsible for any mistakes he made. Also, a middle vertical board on deck was not even with other boards. We were told it would fall into place in a couple of months. It NEVER did. Extremely arrogant man - difficult to deal with - thinks he knows it all and he certainly does not. A year and a half later (April 2011), the decking product failed (it turned white - chaulking). Very unresponsive to us and wanted no part in rebuilding deck. He wanted nothing to do with anything. He took pictures of the now white boards and sent one e-mail to supplier for us. Did not return phone calls. Replied to my e-mails in a nasty fashion as if my husband and I caused the problem. While he may know how to build a deck and we thought he did a good job, our replacement deck has much better workmanship than the original. Would never recommend this man for any job -- his arrogance and poor attitude will be his downfall. No customer service skills at all........stay away from this one. My last contact with him was via e-mail on July 16, 2011. He never followed up and never got back to us with a cost to redo the deck. Treated us as if we never existed......not a way to do business and certainly not a way to obtain referrals.
