I had the pleasure of talking to Mark at 1800TreeExpert. I had wanted several quotes. I had told him I had a magnolia tree that was a memorial to my mother. He told me right over the phone that it was not the season for cutting. When I told him about my topping my tree the year before, he explained how I might have damaged the tree. He said he realized how important my tree was to me, so he pulled up the view of my home on his computer. He saw the tree and explained other options besides cutting. He even said that he would put information in my email for me, but since I didn't know my email address, he said he would put that specific information for me on his website. He stayed on the phone for 15 minutes explaining all of this for me. He came across very knowledgeable and passionate about his work. Should I need any work in the future, I will call 1800TreeExpert.
Description of Work: I called him about trimming a magnolia tree.

They were responsive at first. They left a detailed voicemail on who to call to set up an appointment. They came out and gave an estimate. The man who came out was thorough. He promised to have a crew out in the next few days to do the work and I never heard from them again. I've called the number to set up an appointment and I haven't been called back yet. This was my mistake. They did call back but I missed the called. They worked with me to complete the work to my satisfaction. I think they are an A rated firm. I would use them again without reservation.

They came out and gave me an estimate to get my tree taken down that was 18-20 inches in diameter and I was told that it would cost me $875. I thought this was ridiculous because I had another company come out and do the same exact job for $300 and they did an excellent job. I think he was just trying to take advantage of me because there was a large storm that came through beforehand. I had another company come out and gave me an estimate of $350. It definitely pays to get more than one estimate.
Description of Work: I bought two storefront deal from this company which was $200 worth of tree service for $98. I called them to come out so I could get an estimate on a tree that was damaged in a big storm and needed to be taken down.

$875

Response from 770-Arborist
Member, I am an honest person and I did not quote a ridiculous price. I have thought a lot about how I would respond to your comments. In looking closely I realize that I did not clearly explain to you why I quoted $875. When I gave you the price, your jaw practically hit the ground, you turned around, and you instantly started ushering me toward the front door. It was obvious that you were disturbed and as we were walking the only thing could think to say was to encourage you to return the coupons that you had purchaced through Angies List, which you did. I wanted to put you at ease because it seemed to me that you may have felt as if your hand was being forced and I really did not want you to feel that way. Not at all. Regarding "why" I quoted that price, if you notice, I am pretty serious about the reviews as Angie's List is our only form of advertising. That said, when you told me that you were selling your house, and that any debris would need to be unnoticible, I agreed. The last thing you need is big pile of tree debris in the back yard when you are trying to sell, so I priced the job accordingly. My price was quoted to cut the entire canopy of your tree down to little bitty 6 inch pieces or smaller and carefully sprinkle those pieces around your back yard. This simply takes time and of course time costs money. If you would have hired us, we would have done a 100% perfect job or it would have been free. That is our promise and we back it up. You can see this in our reviews. You mentioned "I think he was just trying to take advantage of me because there was a large storm that came through beforehand." All I can say is that this is clearly a subjective judgement and one that is simply not correct. I will admit that clerical/office organization is not one of my strong points, but honesty and integrity are. All we have on this earth is our word. That is it. This is the one thing that I stick to, almost to the point that people think I am a bit weird. But all I have is my word and I honor it even when it hurts. For example: We run 100% LEGAL employees. This is an incredibly difficult thing to do and it costs me a LOT of money. We have to pay overtime and we can't cheat on taxes like the companies that pay workers cash under the table. Why do I do it? Because I like laying my head on the pillow at night and knowing that I did the right thing, even if I didn't make as much money. Money is not the goal, doing the right thing is. I learned a while back that money does not bring me any satisfaction. In fact for me, it is the opposite. When I chase it, I feel less satisfied. So I don't put profits before people and morals, even when it would be easy to do. $875 was the correct price for 3.5 hours of work and time that I quoted. (10.5 man hours). The comparison of my price to $300 is simply comparing apples and oranges. Here is why. If I would have done your job for $300, my price per man hour would only have been $28.57. This is WAY, WAY, WAY below our cost to run a legit and legal business. That said, either one of the 3 is what happened: 1. The job/time that they did was not the same as what we would have done and the time we woudld have spent. 2. They were paying illegal workers in the name of money. 3. They lost money on the job. Regardless of which of the 3 it was, numbers are numbers and no one can squeeze money out of thin air. Sorry for not explaining this difference more clearly when I was out there. Sincerely Mark Russell 1-800-Tree-Expert

Will not use this company's service.
Description of Work: Made an appointment for a consultation after a promising lengthy phone call. The contractor did not show for the day or call to reschedule. After multiple attempts to contact I did get a return phone call with a less than professional reason as to why they did not show for the appointment. I would say they were honest in the end with finally calling back, but expect better from Angie's List companies.

Hey member, I appreciate your feedback and you are right, I did drop the ball. When you called it was right before we ran the Angie's List deal. When it got sent out we got overwhelmed with calls for estimates and 45 customers who bought the deal. in a matter of 2 days I went from having 5 clients to visit to having over 60. Through no fault of yours, your appointment got lost within my organizational system, at the time a simple note pad. I really apologize for this. All I have as a service business is the expectations that I set. If I don't meet one, I am the only one to blame. I hope that you did end up getting your tree/landscaping issue solved. Mark came out to give me an estimate, and the job was bigger than what the coupon was worth. He was honest with me and encouraged me to contact another tree company, who would probably be able to do the work cheaper than he could. Turns out, I found another tree company that was already going to be working in the neighborhood that could do the work cheaper. Mark also researched this company to make sure this was a legitimate company. He was personable, knowledgeable, and pleasant.

We got an estimate on Monday from Mark, one of the co-owners. He was extremely flexible in giving us options that would allow us to get the work we needed within our budget. The team arrived really early on Tuesday morning and got to to work. We hurried off to our own jobs, things were good. About 4pm that afternoon I get a call from Mark - something has gone wrong - as they were removing the sweet gum, one of the branches took a wild swing and ended up in our air conditioning unit (which I had just replaced 4 months before). Mark immediately took responsibility for the problem, and indicated he had a technician that could come out and repair it the next day. But since the unit was new, I asked Mark to call Shumate to ensure any repairs would maintain the warranty on the new unit. Mark agreed to do so and got on the phone with them immediately. Shumate (who also deserves an A rating) was there the next day and determined that the damage was such that in order to maintain the manufacturers and their warranty, the unit would need to be replaced. Shumate and Mark worked together to iron out the details over the course of Wednesday. Both companies were in constant contact with us and each other. On Thursday when we arrived home from work, the new unit was installed and ready to get our huge contemporary cooled back down. Mark told us, during the estimate, that he guarantees 5 star service. He and his partner Aaron delivered 10 star service. The job wasn't that expensive....they lost money, but they did everything in their power to ensure that the end result was one that completely satisfied us as customers. If you want to deal with an HONEST contractor then this is the one for you.
Description of Work: Removal of two very large pine trees, one sweet gum tree, a whole crop of laurels. They also trimmed five large branches off of an ancient oak and took down six holly trees. They hauled everything off except the hardwood, which we asked to keep. They also ground the pine and sweet gum stumps as well as some stumps we had from previous removals.

The service went just great. He's a nice honest guy, did what he said he would, and stayed in contact with me before they came out to re-adjust the timeline due to the weather. I appreciated him letting me know instead of that day. Price was very reasonable and did not change it after the initial quote.

I very satisfied with the service provided. The crew did an excellent job on trimming the two maple trees and cutting down the one tree. The area was left clean and all of the debris was cut to county specifications for pick up and place by the curb neatly. The crew were very corteous and very professional. I would not hesitate to recommend 1800treeexpert to anyone.
Description of Work: I had two maple trees trimmed. I also had one smaller (8 inch trunk) tree too close to another maple tree so i had it cut down. In addition, i had a dead bush that was up against a fence removed. All the debris from the trimming, dead bush, and tree cut down was placed on the curb for county pick-up.

Mark immediately looked up my address online and found a photo of the tree while he talked to me. He advised me that it was small enough that our townhouse landscape service could remove it for me much more cheaply than he could come here to do. Not only that, but he referred me to a stump grinder, and told me to use his name to get a good price for that job! He could easily have just quoted me a price, come here and cut it down. I am so impressed that he was honest, helpful, and put my needs before his own business possibilities. I would DEFINITELY recommend him, and will undoubtedly use him again in the future if I have any larger jobs. This is the kind of excellent, ethical treatment you always hope you'll get with folks, but rarely do. Let's support the ones who really uphold some strong values in service.

Job was performed as agreed to, great price, and followup by all involved.
Description of Work: Removed one tree, trimmed another tree, hauled all debris, and ground stump. This was during the aftermath of a major storm in Atlanta, Mark and his team were there when I needed them - performed all aspects of the job just as agreed to. Other companies bid on this job and bid extraordinarily high, when I questioned them, they dropped the price $600 without any question (obviously they had bid high, maybe because they were dealing with a woman?) and it was still higher than Mark's quote. He followed up, and was very concerned with customer service. Would highly recommend this group.

We'd used him in the past and he did an excellent job then also. We sought him out the second time, so we're repeat customers. He's very punctual, very careful, and always made sure that we knew what his crew was doing and what things we needed to be concerned about. If you look at those videos on his site, that's how he works. He clearly loves what he does both as an arborist and as a tree remover. He kept us well-informed all through the process, including when the pickup of the logs would take place and what to expect all through the process.

I estimated the work at 1-2 hours, getting the discounted 1st hour. The crew showed up at the arranged time, worked really hard and fast. Stacked everything neatly on the curb for pickup. I was already happy with the work, but as there was 10 minutes left in the 1st hour they asked if there was anything else I wanted them to do, got 2 other trees trimmed. They use SWS Waste Services for pickup, they also did a great job picking up all the branches and making sure they raked and used a leaf blower to leave the yard and road clean. Mark (the owner) was quick to return my calls and answer any questions. Excellent work, I will use them again.

My standard procedure, depending on the work, is to use Angie's list to get 3-4 estimates and then make a decision. I've done this for major HVAC and insulation work. I forget the owner's name at 800treeservice, maybe Mark, but I called him first... just by chance. He said he was trying to get out of the estimating business. He is an arborist, but also basically a one-man shop who uses regular assistants when it is time for a job. He felt like he was spending too much time estimating. He was starting to offer work by the hour, discounting the first hour. If you didn't like the quality of the work, or have any other concerns, you can stop the process and you have very little exposure. It seemed logical, so I bit. I was very concerned about the total spend, so I was a clock-watcher. I initially needed one definite tree down, but was so pleased with the efficiency and care I went with three trees and additional work. I watched 80% of the work... real pleased. He was no pressure. He only made suggestions for additional work when asked. He seemed genuinely concerned that we received good value. The subcontractor who picked up all the wood was awesome. I never spoke to him, but he was quick, efficient, and careful. Good work. I will call him again when needed.
Description of Work: They cut down three dead trees - 2 in the back, 1 in the front, and did some major pruning on a very large tree that was growing over my neighbors yard/house. They cut up the wood and hauled to the curb where they had a subcontractor pick it up within a couple of hours.

I am exceptionally pleased and believe it is among the most pleasant and best service that I've had from any type of contractor. As I noted, I ultimately did not use Mark to remove my tree (for reasons having nothing to do with Mark.) However, Mark was EXTREMELY helpful is my search for a tree service. Mark genuinely wanted me to find the right fit for my job. He spent at least 30 min on the phone with me (in addition to several emails) helping me assess the scope of my job & what would be a fair price. Mark acted with the HIGHEST integrity with full knowledge that he had nothing to gain financially.

I called 1-800-Tree Experts in July when I decided to have my oak tree pruned. (It had not been done in over 20 years). This company was one of several that I called to get an estimate. I spoke with Mark Russell, an arborist and the company owner. He was able to pull up my lot and tree via internet and gave me an estimate of $1,200. He further advised me to wait for this service (I was asking for an extensive pruning and removal of some extremely large limbs) until the fall so that the tree would have a better likely and healthy outcome. I spoke to several other services - some higher bid and some lower bids than Mark, but none matched his professionalism. I waited until the fall and recontacted Mark. He remembered our conversation from the months previously and honored his bid from that time. He then honored his discount coupon from Angies List, bringing the price of the job to $1,056. He gave me a time that he and his crew would arrive. They arrived on time and were extremely courteous and efficient. It turned out that the tree and job was more extensive than Mark estimated. He had originally quoted that the job would take 2 to 4 hours to perform a 90% pruning. Due to the size of the tree and infiltration of a massive amount of mistletoe, it took approximately 10 1/2 hours to prune. This resulted in Mark and his crew having to return on the next day. Mark (and his crew) remained positive and professional during the entire time. His crew cleaned up the site and they even cleaned off the top of protective parking shed where dead limbs and leaves had accumulated. All debris was neatly stacked and was removed by a service on Wednesday following the Sunday completion of the job. The service had been contracted by Mark and was included in the price of the pruning. The removal service was also very thorough and neat. While $1,200 might seem high for pruning a tree, I was extremely happy with Mark's service. His quote was neither the lowest nor the highest, but I am sure that his service was the most professional. I watched the care he took in assessing and working in this tree that has been our family for three generations. I am sure that, with what attention and work was done by Mark, it will be in our family for generations to come.

Because of complex local regulations it was necessary to make frequent contact prior to the service. Mark was very prompt in responding to my queries and in providing necessary documentation. The complexity of the regulations (providing proof of license to do business, insurance, etc. was great assurance that I would not be stuck with financial liabilities and the workers would be covered.Taking down trees is dangerous work!) Angie's List also helped me to ask the important questions and to make sure I had proof and not just assurances.

Mark was very courteous and professional. He was approachable, responded quickly to phone calls and overall communication was good. His pricing was extremely fair for the amount of work. Mark and his crew asked questions and made sure that they were doing the things we wanted them to do - they went above and beyond for us. The crew was very efficient and took great care to properly clean up the jobsite. All debris and logs were removed the next day and the crew returned immediately thereafter to ensure all remaining leaves/dirt were blown, captured and removed so that our lawn, sidewalk and street were clean. An excellent job overall. Payment was not required until job was complete to our satisfaction. I would definitely use them again and recommend them to our neighbors and friends.
