Description of Work: I would highly recommend Sunlighting Lamp and Shade Center. I collect antique/mid-century lamps and have had at least 20 repaired, rewired and refurbished here over the last five years. I live out of state and bring lamps that need work to Atlanta every time I come to visit my family. They accomodate my erratic travel schedule and have no problem keeping the lamps I drop off for months at a time. I picked up a lamp that had been there for several months over Thanksgiving, and I dropped off another one for reworking. I've had lamps reworked all over the country, and have used them exclusively since I discovered them in 2008. Their prices are absolutely fair and comparable to lamp repair in other areas. The shop adheres to the most current electrical code regulations, and will recommend any repairs to ensure electrical safety. They also have quite a good selection of replacement shades, and make custom lamp shades.

From the beginning when they did not give us a receipt for the chandelier we had brought in, we should have sensed something was very strange about how these people do business. We were polite and explained what we wanted done. The lady at the counter claimed their technician would check our chandelier to see whether rewiring was required. *We were told we'd be called to get approval for the job if it did need rewiring.* ( But we had been informed by the electrician who was going to hang it that the wiring was OK except for the length to the ceiling ). We also asked for metal chain links to be added for length. Of course we planned to pay what was required. But 2 weeks later we got a call from the so-called tech to inform us our chandelier had been completely rewired and the cost would be $300. After my husband rushed to the shop to pay for the work, despite it being done without our permission, the woman in the shop refused to give him our fixture. My husband was rather intimidated by the clerk's refusal to deal with him. The clerk (if that's what she was) said the owner would 'decide what to do' and would call him the next morning. But she didn't. He drove to the shop again in the morning and was given a box. It turned out somebody at that company had scuttled our chandelier, rendering it unhangable unless we have it rewired. And we never really knew whether it needed it. Now, whether or not it needed it, we will be forced to pay for a rewiring job in order to use our chandelier! They said they'd call to get an OK before doing any work.We were willing to have paid despite their unprofessional way of doing business but we weren't allowed the option! This has been a terribly disappointing experience. No way to do business at all.
Description of Work: We brought a handcrafted wrought iron chandelier into the Sunlighting Lamp and Shade Center. An electrician (whom we were going to have hang it) had examined it the week before and said the fixture would be safe and ready for him to hang if the main wire was lengthened. We told the lady helping us we wanted the main wire lengthened and some extra chain added. She said that was do-able and would probably cost a little over 45 dollars. But at the counter as another lady (there were two working in the shop, which was busy) was writing up the paperwork (and later we realised she did not give us a copy or a receipt!) said it was possible the fixture might need a complete rewiring job. We said we'd pay a service fee for it to be looked at. We said we were not sure we wanted to pay the 300 dollars she mentioned to rewire that chandelier since could buy a new one for the same amount. ( Besides the electrician had said it was fine.) Replying to our request the woman agreed Sunlighting Lamp and Shade would call us to get an OK before doing any work. 2 weeks later they called and said our chandelier was ready to be picked up. My husband was told the chandelier had been rewired and the bill was 300 dollars. *They had NOT called for approval before doing the work* . In a strange phone call immediately after the one from a man who said he'd rewired the fixture, a woman called and rudely told me if we didn't want to pay for the rewiring job they would sell our chandelier! My husband immediately drove to the shop ( it's nearby ) to pay them and retrieve our chandelier. This was about 4:30pm. BUT the woman there refused to give it to him and d said 'The owner will decide what to do and she will call you in the morning'. The next morning nobody called so my husband drove over to Sunlighting again (about 9:30 am). He had cash and intended to pay the bill to ransom our chandelier. They acted strange and handed it to him in the box we had brought it in. They wouldn't take money and refused to talk! When we looked at it at home we discovered they had cut the main hanging wires all the way down to the base and frazzled and cut all the wires at the lamp sockets. The fixture had been 'scuttled' to rendering it unhangable! Somebody had meant to destroy it. No 'owner' or representative had called us despite what my husband had been told the previous afternoon.

Response from SUNLIGHTING LAMP AND SHADE CENT
FIRST: I wrote up a receipt with what the worst case price would be and gave it to them as I discussed the variations of what we might find. When they left I found the receipt right on the counter where they were standing. SECOND: they didn’t pay me one red cent, so I don’t owe them anything. THIRD: When we got into the chandelier we found that they whole thing needed to be done to bring it up to code. They told me that the chandelier belonged to one of their relatives and it had sentimental value only. We rewired the chandelier and put in all new sockets. I’ll admit that we should have called them first, but they wanted it to be safe so we went ahead and did the work. When we called her to tell her that it was ready for pickup she was furious at the price and told me staff that she could buy a new chandelier for the price it cost to repair this one. FOURTH: when they came in they never offered to pay for the work. They were quite insistent on getting it back right away the way it was, that would have been we do the work for free. At that point I had my repairman unwire the fixture. We did however leave brand new sockets on the fixture, which they never paid for. At this point they just need to take it somewhere else and get them to put in new wire to the sockets and power feed, with ground.

EXCELLENT SERVICE. THE SHADE THEY MADE FOR ME WAS COMPLETED IN ONE DAY AT A REASONABLE COST. I ALSO BROUGHT IN ANOTHER RATHER UNUSUAL LAMP AND THEY SUGGESTED THAT I COULD DO THE REPAIR MYSELF, BY BUYING SOME MATERIALS AT A LOCAL CRAFT STORE--I REALLY APPRECIATED THAT!
Description of Work: MADE NEW LAMP SHADE.
