We had major issues with the grout crumbling after installation. Fil came back several times within the first year to redo part of the grout, but it kept crumbling. Either the correct grout wasn't used and/or the spacing between the tiles is too wide (3/16") for marble tile. I've talked to several tile installers recently and they all use smaller spacing between tiles. Also several tiles are a little loose and rock when stepped on. Then the delays started--for the past 3 MONTHS he claims to have been out of town with family issues, even though there's a review from a customer on Angie's list for a job that was done by him in June. Additionally a friend called Fil for an estimate a couple of weeks ago and he told her he could come over in 3 or 4 days. When I asked Fil about this (he still claimed to be out of town) he said it was his son that answered his cell phone and not him. My wife is heartbroken over this. She doesn't even like having anyone over to the house because of the way the tile looks. Fil has been very vague and non-commital about when he'll return from "out of town." He assures me that we have the "highest priority" on his jobs. I've become increasingly skeptical---there's been more than enough time for someone who has his "highest priority." The excuses and delays keep accumulating. He's told me a couple of times he's a man of his word. So far all we've gotten are words. 1/27/14 UPDATE: I've finally found out what the problem is. I've hired a new tile guy to redo the job, since Fil (Rocca Tile) refused because of his claim that the subfloor moved. The tile came up effortlessly because the wrong thinset was used. There was hardly any thinset adhering to the back of the tiles when pulled up (I have photos). The marble tiles have a resin backing and you have to use epoxy based thinset for the tile to adhere properly. This epoxy thinset is more expensive and either Fil thought he could get away with the cheap stuff or as a professional tile installer, he doesn't know the proper thinset to use to avoid botching the job. REBUTTAL TO COMPANY RESPONSE: I had three other Angie's list tile people come over and say the problem was the way the tile was set , not the floor shifting, which is merely his excuse. He himself rebuilt a section of subfloor far away from the problem areas (for which he charged us $300 extra), and the tile above that area is totally loose. I showed him that area when he was at our house and he didn't have much to say about it--I guess he couldn't come up with an excuse on the spot. 2/7/14 UPDATE: The subfloor is rock solid, as attested by two other tile installers who thoroughly inspected it after the $4000 worth of tiles he installed were pulled up. The majority of the tiles came up effortlessly---there would have to have been a major earthquake to make them that loose. According to these tile guys If he had just back-buttered the tiles (put a thin coat of thinset on the back of the tiles, covering the resin backing) they would have held. These guys saw no back-buttering on the tiles that Fil installed. Most of the tiles had very little if any thinset sticking to the backs of them. We bought the tiles at Emser tiles, which Fil recommended. It's interesting to note that the receipt for the original tiles had no mention of epoxy grout on it, but when we bought the new tiles last month ( the price had now gone up to $5000), the receipt had a warning that said "these tiles have a resin backing and epoxy grout must be used." Emser was fully aware of our problem and decided to put the disclaimer on the new tile invoice, to preclude any legal action. Epoxy grout is very expensive and is probably over kill, but it was used on the new job. Last August Fil hand wrote and signed a new contract, promising to re-do the whole job. This is more than a year and a half since he had done the job and he has no intension of honoring his written promise. If you read the fine print on his contract ( which I didn't, because I trusted him) it says that the customer cannot take any legal action against Rocca Tile after the one year warranty expires. It seems that all the stalling and delays up to and past the first year had purpose.
Description of Work: I hired this company to remove old marble tile in my home (about 350 sq feet) and lay down new marble tile.

Response from Rocca Tile, Inc
We are truly sorry for the member’s negative response on Rocca Tile, Inc. We have had nothing but great and positive reviews from Angie’s list members. Rocca Tile has gone above and beyond to make our customers happy. We are willing to make this right within our capabilities. Fil has gone out to repair this issue multiple times. The member was extremely pleased with the work initially. Over time the subfloor has shifted causing the grout to crack, not an incorrect or inferior product. The subfloor shifting is not something that Fil could have identified prior to putting the marble tile in. Without repairing the subfloor, future shifting will crack grout again or if the customer uses the epoxy grout as the member requested the shifting will cause tiles to come lose because it hardens like steel. Which was explained each time to the homeowners.

Fil was great! When I first called him, he was working on a job out of town. The plumber taped plastic over the hole and I was anxious to get the tile repaired. Fil told me to call him back if I could not find anyone to do the repair and he would come by once he was back in town. He said most companies do not do small repair jobs and he was right! I called several other companies on Angie's list that had received outstanding ratings and they never returned my call or they said the did not do small repair jobs. I was surprised by that. So I called Fil and he did the job as soon as he got back into town. He was on time, courteous, professional and did a fantastic job. He said it was important to him to do even the small jobs because they are important to the people who need the work done. That speaks volume about his character as well as his company. I really appreciate everything he did. I will definitely call him again for tile work and will refer others to him as well. Thanks, Fil!

Fil, the owner of Rocca Tile, is very responsive and friendly. He and his team, Xavier, Defano and others were always on time, hard work and courteous. The work was professionally done, the site was kept organized and cleaned up every day after work. Fil would answer our questions with great patience, provide his recommendations and suggestions but never push us to make any decisions. He and his crew made sure they only use the minimal space from entrance to the master bath so that our daily life was not interrupted. The whole team was so pleasant to work with, making the renovation process much easier and enjoyable than we originally thought. The final cost came out exactly the same as Fil originally quoted. The renovated bathroom looked great and we couldn't ask for more! Fil and his team are more like friends than just contractors to us since the work started. We really appreciated all the work they've done. Rocca Tile is for sure on our top list for any future remodeling projects.

Fil and his crew started promptly when scheduled and worked full time until the job was completed. It took exactly two weeks from start to finish, which was less time that we expected. Throughout the entire process, Fil and his crew were very professional, they cleaned up at the end of every day and took time to protect the floors and walls. Fil patiently answered all of our questions, offered good suggestions and made sure we were comfortable with the process. Fil and his crew did a fantastic job installing the tile, pocket door, replacement window and all of the fixtures. We were fortunate to have chosen Fil for this job and extremely pleased with the results.
Description of Work: Cost included all labor associated with the job, materials purchased separately. Completely gutted existing bath, removed existing vanity, light fixtures, toilet and tub. Installed new tile, relocated plumbing, replaced window, installed a pocket door and built a new walk-in shower. Fil and his crew performed all of the demolition, tile work and installation of plumbing and all new fixtures.

The work was performed quickly and professionally. Fil and his team kept me up to date with any unforeseen problems that came to light, and made a good effort to lay out the tile joints to balance the look of the installation. In general, I was pleased with how they did with the layout, but wished I had provided more direction so that the joints in the floor matched up better with the walls. As an Architect, I am more sensitive to this level of visual detail than most. Technically, the work was top notch. Later, as I was re-setting the toilet II noticed a very thin hairline crack in one of the tiles so I called Rocca. They sent someone out quickly (on Good Friday) and replaced the cracked tile in no time.

Fil was wonderful to work with on this large project that turned out to be more complicated and expensive than anyone expected. When he and his workers pulled out the old, damaged tile from our shower, they found lots of water damage and mold. This necessitated replacing damaged studs, sub-floor, etc. Fil gave us good advice about making changes to our shower to avoid water damage in the future, such as getting rid of a glass block wall and making the walk-in shower level with the floor instead of step-down. Throughout the process, he was great at communicating with us about our options. He was able to be creative when the backsplash we ordered kept showing up broken -- he took parts of two broken ones and put them together with a bit of grout between the parts, and it looks great! He offered to put shelves in the shower (we hadn't thought of that) and put up crown molding without us asking for it, and it looks excellent. Not to mention -- he's a nice guy, a hard worker, and a pleasure to work with. We'll hire him again when we're ready to replace our kitchen countertops!
Description of Work: Total gut and renovation of master bath. Ripped out old carpet and tile; reshaped shower; knocked out glass block wall; put in new tile, double sink vanity, mirrors, medicine cabinet, window, removed old damaged drywall and installed new drywall, replaced light fixtures and vent fans, removed closet doors. ***Price above does not include materials.

Fil Catalano excelled in every aspect of the job. Prior to contacting Fil at Rocca Tile, my wife and I had given the job to another tile installer. The installation included a mosaic mural. We were working within a narrow timeframe as the holidays drew near and really needed the job completed by a certain date. Four days prior to our expected completion date and one day prior to the start date the initial installer informed us that he had a scheduling conflict and couldn't start our job on the date we had expected and would have to postpone it. We immediately looked for help elsewhere. Based on Angie's List reviews, we called Fil. He immediately returned our call and visited our home the same afternoon to see our project and give us a price quote. He and his two helpers began the work the next evening. He and his crew worked on their own time, after hours, for three nights so that we could finish the installation by our deadline. The final result is a beautiful backsplash, expertly and artistically installed, that was finished right on time. Fil is a true professional and a highly skilled tile craftsman and artist. He was attentive and listened to our concerns. He left the kitchen and garage work area clean and neat. We definitely recommend him for any tile work and look forward to working with him again.

They responded quickly, and set up an appt for that same day. It was great. In the end, the same day appt couldnt be kept but they came first thing the next morning. The worked quickly and politely. Fil was awesome and answered any question I had (and was cute with the kids). When they were done I had a small issue with one of the tiles and they happily fixed it for me. I would call them again.

Fil referred us to Emser Tile, and we selected tile on display. I asked for a sample and was given 4 to make a selection. What I was NOT told was that the tile was not a sample tile, but rather a piece of the tile. We made a decision thinking the sample was actually a real tile, especially since I offered to pay for it. I asked Fil to help us decide and he did. What he did NOT tell us was that all edges were beveled, and had we known that, we would not have selected it. I had foot surgery the day after and was in too much pain to think about returning it. Midway thru the job, Fil found the subfloor needed replacing, and we were stuck. I don't know for a fact, but suspect the cost was higher than it should have been since it was more than we paid for the existing tile to be torn-up and replaced. But we were stuck. The tile guys moved the big items from the kitchen, which was helpful and they did a nice job. I had 1 tile too high and Fil replaced it -- but he used one of my extra tiles that I paid for and did not even tell me. I actually paid for 8 tiles and got 6, and now I have 5. He also never offered to pay me for the tile...and I needed that specific tile to tale back to Emser to get my extras replaced with better coloring - it is natural stonre, but the extra pieces are wildly different from the floor. When they moved the refridgerator back, they scratched my hardwood floor. I told Fil twice and he has ignored me. The finish on the floor is a very expensive 2 part fast dry and will cost me a couple hundred dollars to get repaired. Fil was not good communicating to us about his coming or not. In fact, he used the same reason twice after the fact. I also did not like paying for 100% of the tile and half the labor in advance. It makes me feel the company is not successful enough to afford to buy materials to do a job Somehow the bill increased beyond what was quoted in writing and which we agreed-to at the end, but he said he would not charge me more! After all the good reviews I was disappointed. The guys that layed the tile did a very good job, but I was not happy with the whole process.
Description of Work: I requested an estimate to replace kitchen tile and do bathroom tile. The estimate was received in a timely manner. We chose to do only the kitchen. We chose Fil because of the great reviews on Angie's list, as prices were same as others. The price was approximate, I never received a final invoice with all costs.

We were very happy with Rocci Tile's overall work. Fil's workers are professionals and very good at what they do. He didn't have to micro-manage them. After the demolition of the master bath, they prepared the floors and walls for the installation of the new tile. When they were completed and Fil rechecked everything over, I had City Stone and Cabinets install the new cabinets and granite countertops. Then Fil and his crew proceeded to complete my project. They painted and reconnected all the plumbing. As I mentioned, Rocco Tile and Fil's crew did an excellent job. They cleaned up as they went along and worked until the job was finished. Once they started, they continued on full time until completion of my projects. Fil and his crew disconnect and reconnect plumbing and electrical which includes new fixture installations. However, our new bath room cabinet on the main floor was deeper/taller that the one removed. Fil contacted his plumber to come in after hours on the completion of the project and add additional length to the cooper tubing so that the off/on knobs could be accessed from under the sink. This was a separate expense but was relatively inexpensive and well worth having the ability to turn off the water under the sink if need be. This was unexpected but during renovations you find thing unexpected. We would definitely call Fil again for any tile work and will recommend his company.
Description of Work: We totally renovated our master bathroom and main bathroom. Rocco Tile (Fil) came out when I called for an estimate and told me what services they perform. We were to supply him with all the tile, fixtures, cabinets, lighting, etc. His company would provide demolition, discard of materials and installation of tile, fixtures, lighting, etc. The price was basically for demolition and installation with the exception of the special dry rock for the bathroom. We ultimately went where we wanted to select the cabinets, granite tops, lighting, faucets, mirrors, etc. Doing so saved us quite a bit. We had 3 other estimates prior to Rocco Tile but they included everything. However, their prices were double on 2 and triple on the third estimate. These contractors added a lot to the markup. Fil said it would take 2 full weeks to complete our bathrooms. It did take 2 and 1/2 weeks due to my ordering our cabinets and countertops.

It took some time and stirred up a lot of dust, but boy do the floors look GREAT!! I can walk on them now w/lout feeling 'soft' spots in areas. I had contacted about 3 other cos. and one never got back to me...I think she realized what a job it was going to be. But, overall, I am very satisfied with Fil and his team. I would definitely recommend him to anyone. +. ;++++++++++++++0.
Description of Work: Didn't realize that my sub floor was in such terrible shape. I knew it needed some repairing, but when Fil and his team started to 'uncover' the layers, they ended up going done to the 'bone' of it. Replaced the plywood sitting on the beams...beams were crooked. They replaced all the plywood in both kitchen/dining room, of course removing all that 1 1/2 - 2 in. of concrete leveling that had been on there since 1974 and had deteriorated terribly over all the yrs. Wasn't too thrilled about the price, but after thinking and seeing all the work they did...it was worth it.

Fil was very trustworthy. I don’t live at that house yet so I was going back and forth with doing the repairs. He was only going to do so much, but then we found a slow leak that had been happening for around 20 years that was rotting the floors. I had such a good feeling about him that I left him a key to my house while I was out of state. He would call every time he was at the house. He sent me pictures of the work. I sent him the check. He told me to call if I found anything that I wanted changed. The only thing I found was that the cabinet needed a toe-kick. He came to put that on. Everything was beautiful. He went above and beyond to make to his work reflect him.
Description of Work: He completely remodeled the inside of my house. He tore out all three bathrooms, tubs and all. He ripped out the floor in my kitchen that was rotted along with the rotting cabinets. He put in tile floors in the kitchen, bath, and wash area. He basically ripped out everything in the bathrooms, kitchen, and the wash room and installed everything new.

Being cost conscious, we had been purchasing fixtures for our bath as we found bargains. Some contractors didn't like this, but Fil came out, looked at what we had, and designed a proposal that fit our needs. He also made some suggestions that prompted us to switch out a couple things, and choose a different tile - fortunately, we hadn't purchased it yet! Fil was quite busy when he gave us the proposal, but he let us know that it might be several weeks before they could get started. At their first opportunity they scheduled the demolition and when it was finished, the space was clean and the ugly, old bathroom was gone. It took another couple days to build the new bathroom and install the tile and fixtures, and have the shower doors installed. All in all, we could not be more pleased with our decision to use Rocca Tile. Fil and his team are true professionals - clean, courteous, efficient, and clearly, know what they're doing. We have another bathroom that will need attention soon, and I'm so glad that I won't have to search for a contractor - we will be using Rocca Tile.
Description of Work: Our master bath was completely gutted and remodeled by Rocca Tile. We did not change the floor plan, but were able to make the shower a bit larger without moving anything. Rocca did the demolition, carpentry, plumbing, and tile, and we handled the finishes baseboards, mirror, lighting, towel bars, thus saving a bit of money, and having the fun of doing those parts by ourselves.

Fil Catalano, owner of Rocca Tile, responded quickly to provide an proposal. The proposal he provided via email was timely, line-itemed, and in depth. The price was very competitive and beat most other estimates from approximately 5 other providers. I chose Rocca because of the professional proposal, pricing, references, and the knowledge Fil displayed during our meeting. The Rocca team was punctual, professional, and courteous. Their work is meticulous and it is evident they take pride in their skills. While I chose and provided the tiles and light fixtures, I depended on the Rocca team's expertise regarding tile design decisions. I absolutely love my new bathrooms and cannot wait until I'm ready to redesign my kitchen. I already know I'll call Rocca for the job.

He told me what he would do. He told me that on old repairs he can't match the color, but that he could come close to making it aesthetically pleasing. He said that if he tried to do everything that I wanted to do, it was possible that it could turn into a more expensive job than it is worth. We took his advice and just stuck to the basic. A pleasure to work with from estimate to finish. Extremely prompt, courteous, and available for all questions. As someone one else has said it was more like having friends in and out of the house than just a work crew. We are thrilled with the finished product and would not hesitate to recommend Rocco Tile to anyone who is looking for great work from true professionals.
Description of Work: We had Fil and his men take out our shower unit and rebuild a larger shower with tile. They did all the destruction and removal of debris. New wallboard and shower floor, tile and grout.

Fil was patient, knowledgeable and attentive from start to finish. The quote was itemized and reasonable. He helped us scope the project to solve the problem without going overboard, gave good advice on tile selection, was on site to make sure the work was done well and on schedule, and promptly returned after the work was done to resolve an open item. This was not the first time we purchased a home with a faulty shower pan, leading me to believe mistakes are fairly common in the construction industry. I trust Fil to do the job right.
Description of Work: Fil and team demolished and rebuilt the tile shower in our master bath, solving a leak from a previous shower pan that was installed incorrectly.

My only word of caution: Fil is optimistic on his time; add one to two days to his estimates.
Description of Work: Fil and his crew did a very good job converting my bathtub into a shower. His comprehensive estimate gave me a very good idea on what the total cost was going to be. His men were punctual, friendly, an efficient. I would most certainly recommend using him for your bathroom or tiling needs.

The company gave me a detailed estimate of costs which was very important to me. No surprises. I designed the shower and picked out the tiles which the company brought to the house. They put down a protective cloth from the upstairs bathroom to the front door and were very careful to be be as clean and neat as possible. The tiling went very well. The owner checked on the workmen a number of times during the days they were working. The installers were very professional and were experts at what they did. The job was first rate and the price was very fair. I would recommend Rocca Tile to anyone. Its a great company.
Description of Work: The old shower was leaking into the downstairs ceiling and I decided to have the entire shower removed and replaced with new tiles.
