+ -1 moreOutdoor Makeover was offering a special thru Angies List I thought the price was very good so I signed up. When they arrived we walked around the front yard to see what needed to be done - then to the back. My property is old and established and big - this is when I learned the difference between landscaping and yard clean-up. My yard needed a lot of trimming of hedges and small trees which means there is going to be a lot of yard waste to be carted away - this is where the problem for both Outdoor Makeover and me showed up. The time spent actually clearing up after trimming was more than they realized and their hauling equipment was not big enough to hold everything. I had asked for an estimate on clearing out the rest of the property and I thought it to be very high - again they are landscapers not yard clean-up and they don't have a wood chipper which is a must to be competitive especially where there are trees involved. Once we both realized what the real problem was Outdoor Makeover offered 2 free hours to complete the job I felt that was more than fair and would not hesitate to recommend them for landscaping.

+ 5 moreI noticed a recent post regarding a customer who also purchased the same big deal as us and made some complaints, and I can tell you that Outdoor Makeover never tried to up-sell or ?get their foot in the door? with us. Navid and his crew were happy and thankful to stick with our original clean-up project, but after I saw how much they were willing to do to make us a satisfied customer, we pulled the trigger on all of the additional work. I think customers need to understand that a fixed price/man hour deal might not include enough time to do everything they want done. Our project could not have gone better. I would recommend Outdoor Makeover and Navid to anyone interested any landscaping project from a small yard clean-up to a full landscaping over-haul! Thanks, Navid and crew! We now have the best yard in the neighborhood!
Description of Work: We purchased Outdoor Makeover’s $249.00 six man hour big deal to clean up our front beds and when Navid and his crew arrived, we immediately knew we picked the right company! Navid took extra time with us and made some great suggestions on how to complete what we wanted. We had postponed a full landscaping re-do, but after sitting down with Navid and going over several of my ideas, Navid came up with cost saving options and great design plans. You can tell he loves what he does and that comes through in his projects! Even with a difficult client that kept adding to the project and making changes, they made certain we are happy! I read all of the outstanding reviews for Outdoor Makeover and agree that they are an “A+” company. Outdoor Makeover made sure that we are 100% satisfied. After each phase of our project, he and his crew made sure that everything was done the way we wanted it! They go out of their way to make sure you are satisfied! We started the project with a simple hedge trimming, tree removal and bed clean-up, but ended up with a complete front and back yard landscaping project. Outdoor Makeover completed the front yard clean-up as we planned and removed a dying tree. We then had them relocate our rose bushed to a new irrigated bed and then replanted the entire front beds with trees, shrubs and ground cover. Navid designed the layout and picked the plants and trees based on the types of plants and trees we liked. We added a front and back yard irrigation system which included a drip irrigation system for all of our new plants and trees. Navid’s vast knowledge of plants was evident when he made suggestions and changes based on what we liked and didn’t like. We always had a drainage issue with the back yard. Navid designed a custom dry creek bed feature that makes the back yard more functional and looks great. Plus with all of the rain we recently had, it worked great! We always struggled to keep grass in our back yard especially in winter, so Navid designed a zero-scape, dog friendly back yard, which includes new trees, plants and beds. We now have a functional entertainment area with a stone fire-pit and plenty of space for the dogs. We also had a huge pine tree that always loomed over our back yard and Outdoor Makeover took it out and opened up our yard even more. Outdoor Makeover true to their name made over our entire landscaping and it feels like a whole new house!

+ -1 moreBe careful! I know others had great experiences, but I feel a little tricked and disappointed. I purchased "The Big Deal" is for 6 hours of service. I provided a written description of what I wanted on the form the company provided, as well as a paragraph description in an email. I requested that a small flower bed be cleaned, trenched, and tilled. An easy job for a man with a tiller, and 6 hours of time. However, the company choose to come with 6 men for one hour and some hand tools (the ad does say the number of men and time spent is at their discretion, but I feel that they disregarded my description of the project). The leader said that if I wanted, they could rent a tiller and come back another time, but I had already taken the day off from work to meet them, so I let them work with their tools. They scraped the top of the soil, clearing the bed that I had outlined in advance, but there was no real tilling or trencing at the border of the bed. Some of the men stood around, with nothing to do after that so since they had time left, so I asked them to edge the lawn too - they did bring an edger. I know the project was superficial and didn't meet my needs, because yesterday I planted the bed and had to trench it and till the soil myself. Definitely not worth the $250 and day off from work. Also, it took multiple calls and emails to schedule an appointment - and the company rescheduled because they have to "group the small jobs." So this deal may not be worth it, if you have a "small job." Also more than once on phone calls and on-site, they said, "you want to plant bulbs, right." I told them, "no, I want to flower bed dug and tilled - no bulbs; I never mentioned that." Understandably, the company is iooking to get its foot in the door for big jobs, but skimping on the little jobs won't get them invited back for the big ones.

+ 3 moreWe've been in our 1930s home for 20 years now and had not done anything to refresh/remodel or maintain the landscape. Since we don't have a lot of interest in yardword and gardening, we didn't have a lot of ideas as to what we wanted other than low maintenance. We came to Navid with a $ figure and a request that he make the yard presentable. What he designed went way beyond. He took the time to talk with us and get to know us and our lifestyle before he drew up plans and designed things I could never have thought of alone. When I mentioned that I often sit on my front stoop to read the paper, have a cup of coffee or stretch after a run---he suggested a stone table/bench next to the area that looks like it grew there. Noticing the elaborate dance my husband and I were going through as we parked 2 cars in a driveway only one car wide, he suggested a cut away/parking area that again, adds to the landscape rather than taking away. A comment that I enjoy cooking but was going to put herbs in pots on the deck rather than putting in an herb garden resulted in a few rosemary plants being scattered in the main plantings. We ended up spending more than we had initially budgeted but that was because I loved some of the ideas that Navid came up with as we began work and I expanded the scope of the project. All of the additional cost was discussed and approved prior to being incurred. Navid was able to begin work almost immediately and the entire project took about 2 weeks start to finish. There was a relatively large crew here and Navid or Natalie was generally onsite. Cleanup was thorough. We absolutely love the look of the house--particularly the use of stone/rock that keeps the hardscaping coordinated with the look of the older home.
Description of Work: back and front yards were cleared, irrigation installed, leveled and sodded. Stone retaining wall built along front of property. Rock parking "pad" built Stone table/bench patio area built Beds designed and installed.

+ -1 morewent very well. they were able to do this on one day. their team worked really hard and rarely stopped to take a break. Natalie and Navid make a good team with their attention to detail. Had existing beds but no time to get them completed, had navid come out to perform a $99.00 special consult and get some ideas. I had already spoken with several other companies, but i chose their company over the others due to their flexibility with my budget and schedule. He provided complete list of what plants he would provide and then on their arrival, we fine tuned locations. He had initially said he would provide a certain amount of sprigs of monkey grass, and came with bags full of mature plants which are much more full and look like they have been there for a long time. wow! He also provided at no charge a japanese maple specimen tree for the new bed along with accent plants to grow under the canopy once the weather gets warm again. I have more to do, and will be calling them to help with the next project.
Description of Work: transplanted some gardenias, lined flower beds with mature specimens, expanded flower beds, buried downspout hoses to improve appearance, installed new plants & Shrubs in other beds where none existed prior. Removed large shrub, installed irrigation head and moved old one. Added flag stone stepping stones to path and mulched all the beds with fresh mulch.

They finished the work in just one day and cleaned up like they were never there. The final results just blew me away. I have the landscaping I have always wanted and I am more than proud of my house every time I pull into the drive way. If you are looking for a true professional and someone that takes pride in their work, use this company!!!
Description of Work: Landscape consultation and makeover of my front, side, and backyard landscape. During the initial consultation, I showed Navid the spaces I had and how I wanted something aesthetically pleasing and easy to maintain. Navid asked a few questions to understand the types of things I liked and was quickly able to mentally create a plan he felt I would enjoy. We discussed this plan in some detail as he draw it out and he was right, I loved it. The plan detailed using some of the existing plants, I already had, as well as adding 5 - 8 new plants and 3 fruit trees to my front and side yards and trimming it in stone. In addition, Navid and his crew transplanted several plants from my front to my backyard and installed several pieces of stone to better define the space.

+ 1 moreWe called Outdoor Makeover, after seeing rave reviews on Angie's List, to resolve several different issues in our back yard. Navid came out to talk with us and after showing him our problems, he quickly came up with solutions. We had a bad erosion problem in our yard due to poor drainage. The existing brick steps from our driveway to our back yard were slowly slipping away. Navid designed new steps using solid natural stone, flagstone, pea gravel and large rocks and a flagstone path leading to a storage shed. He designed a stone retaining wall to solve our erosion problem. He also designed a new planting area in an unsightly area next to the steps and in another area that we were not even considering. Navid had the materials delivered as promised and he and his crew were at work that very morning. In two days, with a crew of 12 men, our back yard was transformed. A drainage pipe was installed under the new steps, underground, to the end of our back yard to control water. The stone steps are not only beautiful but they were meticulously installed. There is a flagstone path to our storage shed that was not there previously and the stone retaining wall is beautiful as well as functional! After discussing with us the plants we like, Navid planted new hydrangeas, gardenias, creeping yew, japanese maple, abelia, winter daphne, creeping jenny, ajuga, etc. Not only did he plant beautiful, healty new plants, he suggested moving some of our existing plants to incorporate with the new design. I also mentioned to him I would like a young dogwood moved and before I new it, it had been transplanted! New mulch and rock borders finished the planting areas beautifully. The crew also installed pinestraw that we had ordered previously and had not yet installed. Navid was extremely professional and we have never seen a happier crew. They truly went above and beyond our plan and we could not be happier. We plan to use Outdoor Makeover for our future landscaping needs.

On the day of Navid's visit, his assistant called us several hours before our appointment to let us know that he would likely be arriving near the end of his appointment window, so if we had any errands to run, we may have time to do so. I really appreciated this thoughtful courtesy, so our relationship started very well. When Navid arrived, my wife and I had his undivided attention for the full duration of his consultation. We discussed options to handle runoff and drainage problems in our yard, as well as budget, and he worked out a solution that would do the job we wanted and keep well within our desired budget. He did a fantastic job of also suggesting other improvements we could make to our yard on our own, and offered a few other reasonable services that he could provide. At no time was he pushy in any way. He did do an excellent job of selling and offering to sell us additional services in a clear, helpful and consultative way. In the end, we agreed on our price for a dry riverbed, underground pipes to channel all of the runoff out of our yard and some mulch to be delivered and installed in a fairly large area. A few weeks later, Navid and his crew came in to do the agreed upon work. The worked quickly and politely and got the entire job exactly as agreed. Well, not exactly. They did a bunch of extra things. Navid had some leftover material from another job, and suggested that using it in our job would leave us with a better final result. They installed the additional material at no extra charge (and were right in that we like the final result better). The night before Navid came, a very large limb fell from a tree in our yard. Navid called to ask if I'd like him to remove it for a little extra. I declined and said I'd take care of it myself. When I got home from work, he and his crew had cut up the limb and removed it from our property anyway. Since the job has been completed, Navid has called a couple of times to check and make sure we are satisfied with the work, and indeed we are. I will use Outdoor Makeover again, and will gladly recommend them to anyone in need of professional landscape and landscape design services.

+ 2 moreNavid Derakhshan asked for a payment for his time and effort in preparing the landscape design. He asked for $89.00, and we felt that was an excellent price for a design plan. We were certainly disappointed to have to postpone our exciting plans for almost a year. Navid was very understanding when we explained our circumstances to him. I feel like we have not wasted his time, since we have a preliminary plan of action. I look forward to Spring 2012 when we will schedule services with Outdoor Makeover. I will write a report after services are completed.
Description of Work: We met with Navid Derakhshan, owner and landscape designer. We told him we wanted a complete new look for our backyard, especially around our pool and patio deck. Before anything new can be done, we must have almost all the English ivy removed from the yard. Navid understood our approximate price range and made suggestions for the yard, asking what plants we would like to have. After almost an hour of talking outside, we sat down inside. Navid drew up a very detailed design for a beautiful new backyard. We were ready to set a date for service when we had an unforeseen financial roadblock (meaning no money!) We chose to postpone service until Spring 2012.

+ 3 moreThe entire process - from the initial consultation to the project completion - could not have gone better. Navid never pushed me to do anything I wasn't interested in doing, but he always gave me options to ensure I got exactly what I was looking for. His crews also were great. They showed up early every day over the course of the five day project and they worked exceptionally hard. The excavation of my pond, not to mention all of the subsequent rock work it required, would have been impossible for me to do on my own and the team brought that same degree of dedication to everything else they did as well. One of Navid's greatest strengths is his commitment to customer satisfaction. I have never worked with a contractor or vendor who was more concerned with ensuring I got what I wanted and more. At every step of the project, Navid asked me if I was happy with things and he encouraged me to share any concerns, issues or questions with him - which I did. I have built ponds before and have quite a bit of experience and knowledge regarding construction techniques, materials and filtration systems, so I was quick to share my perspective. Navid was very sensitive to my objectives and he always ensured he addressed everything I brought up - EVERYTHING. This was a great experience by any measure and I'm extremely happy I chose Outdoor Makeover to handle my project.
Description of Work: After reading some glowing reviews in Angie's List, I contacted Outdoor Makeover with the intention of getting a quote for doing some grading and sod work in my backyard and to discuss some possible concepts for a goldfish pond and waterfall. Navid Derakhshan, the owner, general manager, and master landscape artisan, provided me with not only a list of ideas for my immediate objectives, but also a broader "big picture" concept of what he could do to help my backyard become the peaceful retreat I desired. Ultimately I decided to proceed with a considerably larger project than I had initially intended, but I'm certainly happy now after seeing the final result. In the end, Navid designed and installed two stunning dry creek beds to address a persistent and devilishly challenging drainage problem that was potentially threatening the foundation of my house. My lawn also was regraded and a new layer of topsoil was added before the installation of some beautiful empire zoysia grass. Finally, Navid and his hard-working and industrious team created a 14' x 10' garden pond, complete with two waterfalls, which I'm sure ultimately will provide me and my family with countless hours of relaxation and enjoyment. I should also add that Navid's father, Abdi, performed some great electrical work for me that involved reconfiguring and repositioning several GFCI outlets to ensure my pond has all the power it needs now and in the future should I choose to add lighting or other options to my landscape.

+ 1 moreNavid and his team did a great job in refreshing my landscape. They had to do a lot of cleanup because I had not done much with the yard for several years. They replaced a pathway with larger stones and made it look much more inviting and added many plants that should do well in my yard which gets little real sun. I was very pleased with how he re-used a lot of existing plants and placed them in areas that made more sense. He even had someone on his team transplant some ferns from a wooded area I have into an area where could make a bit difference in how it looked. Navid spent a couple of hours listening to me describe what I was looking for and problems that I had and wanted to avoid. They were able to start within just a few days and finished the entire job in just under two days. I am very pleased with the results.

The addition of the egg rocks in the front, creating three islands, and the introduction of red mulch in the back, looks incredible. Very happy with the outcome. Better yet, Navid's suggestions took into consideration my desire to minimize the amount of work I have to do from a maintenance standpoint. Navid does NOT nickel and dime you--it was one set price, and even tho we requested some changes out of scope of the original contract, he didn't cry foul. I intend to use Navid for more ideas for our yard next year.

+ 0 moreNavid does what he says and then goes beyond. The design looks very profession, very pleasing, and delivers the change I was hoping for with my contract. He communicated all along extremely well, telling me when they would begin, small delays due to thunderstorms in the area, and asked me for location adjustments to enhance the look as it went in. He also moved some existing plants to enhance my yard and function of screening. I am certain he brought in some additional material without charging me. I think during the install, we walked the job three times. He listened, suggested, and did more than any contractor I have worked with (and I deal with a lot of commercial contractors) to make sure I was satisfied. Navid is a true professional, and all his crew were polite and courteous. They worked amazingly hard. I have hired Outdoor Makeover to return in the Spring when the weather turns and install a water feature. I so look forward to having that installed in the bed by my front porch. I will enjoy sitting on the shaded porch, listening to my water trickle, and admiring my landscape. In a nice neighborhood, this house is a rock star.
Description of Work: I hired Outdoor Makeover from a Big Deal for a landscape consultation. I knew after meeting with Navid that he is the contractor to hire for the work I was contemplating. He worked through a very good design and emailed the plan to me. I am not all that knowledgeable in plant material and put my faith in Navid's hands. This was truly a great decision. His crew arrived on Friday afternoon and had most of the current beds stripped of the outgoing material by 3:30. They began planting per the layout and worked until dark. Saturday morning Navid returned with them to walk the job with me and make sure I was happy. They finished the job Saturday afternoon by spreading 12 yards of mulch and watering in the plants.

+ 0 moreNavid did an outstanding job creating our design Navid is an Emory graduate with a vast knowledge of plants and hardscapes. He is personable and very concerned about his customer's needs. He listened to our want list and came up with creative ideas that were within our price and added ideas and products to consider if we wanted to upgrade. He did not try to sell us any additional services, but focused totally on the plan. His ideas for the firepit and patio were much better than what we had planned. His ideas for drainage were functional and pretty and tied into the trail. I will be using Outdoor Makeover to make some of these ideas a reality.
Description of Work: We signed up for the interactive landscape design by Outdoor Makeover. Our house is on a lake and we are concerned about views and lake access. Navid created a plan that incorporated our desire for a patio, trail around the backyard to the lake, drainage and easy care plants that provide color. He explained different products that could be used based on different price points and helped us understand plants and grass that would not work based on shade and drainage. He explained the process so that we can install the plan in steps.

From Navid, to Natalie, Joe, and the entire crew of very hard-working men, the entire staff is friendly, efficient, and professional. We kept changing the project and, although cost went up accordingly, I never felt pressured to spend more than I felt comfortable spending. I just wish we had the $ to have the entire crew come back and do our back yard. I highly recommend Outdoor Makeover.
Description of Work: Hardscaping and landscaping: large river rocks and small boulders, dotted with drought-proof plants. We wanted a low-maintenance yard that required little watering - given the water problems in Atlanta, the latter was a primary concern for us. As well. we wanted a natural, attractive but "free" rather than a "decorator, latest fashion" look. Navid worked with us and gave us exactly what we asked for. We are enjoying the result and look forward to a pretty yard and low water bills in the summer.

+ -1 moreIt took a few attempts and several weeks to setup an appointment. During the appointment I was asked budget, type of landscape I liked, including colors, plant varieties and etc. There was some measurements taken and ideas discussed. Frankly, I was hopeful that I would get a 'plan' back as promised in the initial offer. However after many weeks, I received an email with what appeared to be an iPhone photo of a loosely sketched drawing that was unreadable, not usable and no discernible scale. I could have done better with crayons. Not what I would call a landscaping plan. In the end the whole service was a $100 wasted. Thankfully I only invested $100 to find out about the quality of Outdoor Makeover. Can't imagine how I would feel if I had invested more and contracted for any substantial landscape work. The whole experience also makes me think twice about ever purchasing an Angie's List Big Deal.

Excellant work and extremely easy to deal with. they did what they said they would do, when they said they would do it. Everything was planned out in advance and completed in a logical, efficient way to give the most value for the money. I plan to use them again for several future projects.

+ -1 moreUpdate 10/11/11 - Navid responded to my report and also called me to discuss. To his credit, he was very apologetic and asked for an opportunity to make things right. I have adjusted my original scores in light of our conversations and will see how it progresses from here.
Description of Work: I am removing my previous comments and reporting only on how things went once we gave it a second chance. Navid came back and drew up a plan after we walked around and reviewed what we had previously discussed. We reduced the scope somewhat to better fit a budget that I was comfortable with and agreed upon what would be done. He had his crew out in a few days and from there things went very well. The crew was great and even with a sudden downpour, they kept going whenever possible! Navid had them do some extra things and went out of his way to make sure that I was happy. I look forward to watching my new plants mature. Navid got a maple that was larger than expected and it already looks mature in the yard.

+ -1 moreI called Outdoor Makeover for help with my backyard after I had 18 trees removed. The office staff was very courteous and scheduled a consult for the first available appointment slot. On the day of my appointment, Navid called to let me know he was on his way and I told him that I had a fixed budget and explained that the backyard was basically destroyed by the heavy duty equipment used to cut and load the logs onto the log truck. (The trees were up to 90 feet tall.) The process left a terrible mess behind and I felt embarrassed for a professional landscaper to see my yard. I wouldn't have blamed Navid if he turned the job down after seeing how ugly the yard was and how big my hopes were to have a place I could enjoy. Navid never hesitated. He began right away to find out what plants I liked. I knew I wanted color and a plan that would be low maintenance. Navid listened and developed a plan that included perennials and plants with year round color. He explained that in order to stay within my budget, the size of the plants would be smaller. I was so pleasantly surprised that the plants, while not fully mature plants, were definitely large enough to make my yard look great. The next day the plants were delivered and Navid took great care to set out each plant according to the plan. The installation crew arrived early on the following day. The crew was very professional and took care to clean up. I was especially impressed with the soil prep before the plants went into the ground. My past experience is that a hole is dug and the plant goes into the clay. However, Outdoor Makeover used topsoil and fertilizer for each plant. Navid and Natalie both were onsite to make sure that everything I wanted was done and that I was satisfied with the result. For me, it is all about trust and Navid and his staff at Outdoor Makeover did exactly what they said they would do and delivered more than promised. He didn't try to up-sale me and he respected my budget. While he is very professional and pleasant, he also sincerely wants the customer to be satisfied and goes above and beyond to make sure this happens.

+ 0 moreOutdoor makeover is very thorough and clean up after themselves. This is a pet peeve of mine, when contractors leave a mess in my yard. These guys took what had been a rather sorry looking yard and made it look great. They worked fast and efficiently and they obviously pride themselves in doing a quality job. I was very pleased with the work they did and I would definitely use them again.

He did ask for a partial payment up front, but I trust that if this were not a reputable company, the Angie's List scores would reflect that. More to come when the job is done. 10/12/11 Outdoor Makeover (Navid, Natalie, Joe and crew) did an outstanding job. They were unlike any other contractor I've ever dealt with; friendly, courteous and accommodating. They went above and beyond what was expected of them. Changes I made along the way, didn't mean changes in price. They did a lot of extras at no charge and went all out to give me what I wanted. I highly recommend them and will call them again for my next project.
Description of Work: 9/26/111 My yard was destroyed by the storms in April, so I took advantage of the 2 hour $99 interactive landscape design offer from Outdoor Makeover. Their representative, Navid, was punctual and courteous. Because I have such a large yard, we were unable to cover it all in the allotted time frame. Navid returned the following Monday to finish our consultation, which way exceeded 2 hours. He was never in a rush, although I felt a little guilty for taking up so much of his time. 10/12/11 Outdoor Makeover was contracted to replace a rotted cross tie wall, remove unwanted plants, and replace them with new plants and design. Before work was to begin, I tried to contact several tree surgeons to have broken limbs trimmed and some stumps grind; no one ever even called me back. Navid made one phone call and had someone out here the same day. A cross tie wall was rebuilt with landscape timbers and the old ones hauled away. They removed approx. 30 unwanted plants in my yard and replaced them with at least 100 new ones of various kind. When some of the plants in the design were not available, they substituted more mature plants and more quantity than the original design called for. They even moved and divided some of my existing plants to fill in gaps, which was not part of our original contract, at no additional charge.
