MEADE'S DISCOUNT DOORS

Phoned on Friday to be sure the doors were in. They do not offer delivery, so we rented a truck to transport the door (the three panel was 108" wide). When we got to the store they were quite busy (not surprising since it was a Saturday.) When they located the custom door, they realized that the glass panels had not been installed yet. Also the top of the frame was broken, so they gave us another to replace it (which required some amount of work on the part of my "contractor", i.e. Dad.) We decided to take the door anyway since it would be easier to move without the glass panels. When we were loading the door we noticed that one of the frames on the glass was broken. It took some time to locate a replacement for it. Once we got the doors to the house and laid them out, we noticed that the knob and lock holes were not where they should have been as indicated on the order (the lone panel door had the knob and key on the wrong side.) Normally I would have insisted on a new door, but considering the effort we had already gone through to rent the truck, pick up the unassembled doors andreplace the broken piece, it seemed too much trouble to stall the project at this point. Then we realized that they had forgotten to include the screws for the panels of glass, so we had to make a trip back to the store to pick them up. Once the new knobs and locksets arrived, we were then presented with the problem of the lockset holes not lining up correctly between the core and the steel, so some manipulation with drills and files was necessary to make the locks fit correctly. During this time the manager had called to let us know that they had accidentally included an extra t astragal, and asked if we could drop it back at the store. I was not planning to make the trip back to Decatur (15+ miles) anytime soon, so a couple of days later the owner stopped by to pick it up (at which point we showed her some of the issues with the doors.) Overall it was a lot of hassle for a lot of savings. The prices were good to begin with and they refunded the price of the single door ($115) to make up for the extra work we had to do. Thankfully my dad is a retired contractor and knew how to deal with all of this (and had the time to) because otherwise this would have been a horrifying experience. They had other great deals in the store, unique doors and windows and even some flooring, crown and shingles at great prices, but do not attempt this if you're a novice diy'er. Also, I have to say that despite all of the issues the owner (Nichole) and the manager (Dean) were really nice about everything and extremely knowledgeable. I would go back without hesitation now that I know what things to pay attention to (though I've decided NOT to order my window replacements from here. . .) Oh, and the final installed doors look nice too.
