I researched tankless water heaters from various home improvement magazines. I narrowed it down to 2. Rinnai was consistently recommended, and I went to their web site to look at their product. The web site was very helpful and it gave me a model number based on the amount of people in the household and usage. It also listed several plumbers in my area and contact information. In the course of the next 2 days, I was contacted by both plumbers and scheduled dates/times for them to come out and give me estimates. When Dan from Big Brown came out, he impressed me from the beginning. He was the only 1 who actually went under the house to look at the existing lines, measured and actually evaluated the job. He told me how it could be done and what he would do. I told him which model # was recommended and he emailed me his estimate. His estimate was thorough and broken down by materials & labor (even down to the electrician). I had budgeted $2000 for the whole job and he quoted me $1330 w/ the model I gave him. Since he came in way under budget I was able to upgrade to a bigger model, which still came in under budget. He scheduled the following week for the installation. He was prompt and started working right away. Although it took him longer than the 4 hrs he estimated, the installation and removal of the old w.h. went smoothly. I now have an outside gas tankless heater that you don't notice (somewhat hidden) w/o the bother or expense of a tank. I get plenty of hot water and sometimes forget it's tankless. The holidays will test the unit's ability to produce hot water with more people in the house, and hopefully show me some savings in gas consumption. I would highly recommend Dan based on his professionalism, low pricing, and ability to do the job well. The other estimates I received were $3000 and $3600. The highest quote was from a plumber who recommended Rinnai but was not on their list of plumbers.
