Response from Indoor Air Quality Solutions
Angie, and Anonymous Reviewer We work hard to provide the best possible customer service and indoor environmental reporting to all of our customers. We are committed to providing our customers the best possible experience and provide solid opinions based on our findings. We would love to dispute this F rating however we the individual that gave us the F rating is anonymous and we cannot find the reported address within our records. Therefore, we cannot speak to the service provided or the customers negative experience. To be clear, we have no record of providing any service at this location. The fee is not a standard fee for us and the address is not found within our accounting or our report files for the years 2013, 2014, 2015, or 2016. It is a bit odd for the review to come a full 16 months after the reported date of service. Why wait so long if you had such a bad experience? Why remain anonymous? Why not provide specifics as to the service provided or the specifics regarding the poor customer service? I strongly believe that the service provided was not provided by Indoor Air Quality Solutions, IAQS. I believe this is mistaken identity. However, if the anonymous individual that gave us the F rating can provide an invoice or written report from Indoor Air Quality Solutions, IAQS we would happily refund their service fee 100%. We do not want any of our customers to have a bad experience. This anonymous F rating submitted 1 year and 4 months after the reported service is both heart breaking and devastating to a small family owned and operated business. This was not a review. It was a simple anonymous rating of F. How can this anonymous rating be allowed on Angie's List?

Lumber Liquidators sold me laminate flooring. I was very happy with the quality and beauty of the laminate floors. Recently they have had issues with chemicals coming from the flooring and if that was true then I would need for them, or worst case, me to replace them. Therefore, it was important to know if there was a problem. I hired Indoor Air Quality Solutions to come with equipment and test all the rooms. Lydia came and she was very pleasant and used testing equipment and there was no problem. I have a written report so show anyone in the future that may rent or buy the house. The testing all went well and I can recommend this service.
Description of Work: Tested for the presence of formaldehyde from laminate floors.

Everything was great! The report provided all the information the lender was looking for and I was a satisfied home buyer fully informed about the house I was trying to purchase.
Description of Work: Microshield provided a full microbial inspection and detailed report of a house I was in the process of trying to purchase. They informed me of everything going on in the house, from any mold in the walls, to what is coming through the air vents. They performed a visual inspection as well as taking indoor environmental measurements. They measure down to .5 micrometers for particulates. The inspection report is very detailed and gives both a general overview of what they are are looking at with specific details of what they found. They also give a good overview of general recommendations for things anyone can do to improve the air quality in their home, as well as very specific recommendations to improve on based on their findings. Microshield was very timely and professional and helped answer all of my questions. They reviewed their findings with me, summarizing what was going into the report. I received the report electronically and in a timely manner. The report helped satisfy the requirements my lender was requesting concerning the house. I enjoyed working with them to learn more about the home I purchased in addition to satisfying my lender's requirement.

Throughout the process, Microshield was professional. They responded quickly to our phone calls, were available for appointments to do the testing with little or no wait, and spent a good deal of time explaining what they were doing, what our results meant, and were open to answering any of our questions, not only about our water/mold issues, but also about general home toxicity and health issues, including what pets contribute (we have two cats). It's annoying and tiring for anyone to have to go through mold and water-damage remediation. It really helps to have someone who is knowledgeable and qualified to walk you through the steps, especially on the science end of things. Microshield met and exceeded our expectations.
Description of Work: Microshield tested a water-damaged wall and ceiling in our living room and a water-damaged ceiling in our nearby kitchen for the extent of damage and any mold or fungus. There was indication of mold. We received a detailed, 29-page restoration protocol that included photographs of the damaged areas and recommendations for how they should be contained for remediation. After one wall and two ceiling areas had been removed, Microshield came back to retest to make sure that they were free of mold and ready to be repaired.

I am stunned at how the report and responses I received in 2011 ($300) are so different from the report and responses I’ve received in the past few months ($450). Spending $450 for a consulting fee and getting 1) a report within minimal data that I had to ask to be corrected (does not have any lab tests), 2) one follow up visit, and 3) a one page test result from a sample, is not a good value. I got the recommended work done, which did not resolve the issue. After the last visit, I did not hear from them for 2 weeks, even after a plea for help via email and phone. I'm dealing with an odor issue so bad I have to wear a mask in my house, and I asked if more testing needed to be done. The response I finally got was a one page lab report from one sample and their two and quot;concernsand quot;. I think a lot of people would be quite upset that having work done that involved another contractor's rework based on Microshield's report, did not resolve the issue. Instead I asked for more testing that I would pay for so we could pinpoint the issue. Without additional testing, I can't imagine spending the $10-$15K to address those two and quot;concernsand quot;, only to find out those fixes don't help either. I can't figure out if they don't want to do additional testing, they don't have time, or they just don't want to deal with me or my home's issues. In any of those events, it should not be that hard to refer me to someone else. It's almost funny that when I emailed them that they should not be surprised by my review on Angie's List, I got two phone calls and an email within an hour. If you need some tests and advice, this is the right place. If you need help from a company that sticks with you until the issues are resolved, I'd suggest you look elsewhere.
Description of Work: I requested an appointment to get testing done to deal with an odor issue from the HVAC unit. I had used Microshield previously for a mold issue and was very happy with their testing, report, and recommendations.

Response from Indoor Air Quality Solutions
My heart was broken when I read the report from the member. We have tried to help her understand and improve her indoor environment. We have provided her two assessments and one follow up visit that reflect the same few areas of concern with one remaining, unaddressed and un-resolved concern within her home. The initial assessment 4/1/2011 was to identify areas that could be compromising the indoor air quality of the members home. 1. An air handler closet that is open to the attic and 2. An open return air plenum that was drawing in air from the attic and water damaged wood flooring. 3. Substantially water and mold damaged parquet wood floor throughout their home. The second assessment 3/16/2012 was to identify a strong chemical odor reported by the member a coming from the AC identified that the members did make the repairs to the air handler closet ceiling but have not made any of the necessary repairs to the water and mold damaged wood floor. However the members did use chemicals to clean their air handler a practice that Microshield NEVER prescribes and had a UV light installed in their supply plenum above their air handler. Another practice Microshield NEVER prescribes. Our report was simple; 1. Find out what chemicals were used to clean the air handler and ducts and get them removed. 2. Get the UV light that is causing damage to the registers and duct board out of your HVAC. These are the cause of the elevations of VOC’s and the chemical nuisance odor. 3. Finally close the return air plenum and properly address the water and mold damaged parquet wood floor. Follow up visit of 4/11/2012 1. No repairs to the floor were made. 2. No repairs to the open return air plenum were made. Two assessments, a follow up visit and the members has yet to address the fact that she has water and mold damaged wood flooring throughout her home. Damage to the extent that the members has spread baking soda on the floor which was reported to control the odor by her husband. The collection of samples, at no cost to the members was in an effort to show her that the flooring must be addressed. As for spending the $10-$15K to address those two "concerns", only to find out those fixes don't help. Only one was addressed and that was the open air handler closet ceiling. Two were not addressed and those were the open return air plenum and the water and mold damaged parquet wood flooring. The chemical usage and UV light were never recommended by Microshield and led to a second set of nuisance chemical odor concerns unrelated to the original assessment. Below is a brief review of the assessments and findings. Assessment 4/1/11 The members would like to determine if there are any indoor environmental and/or building envelope concerns with their home. We begin with a visual inspection and the measuring of the indoor environmental conditions (temperature, humidity, airborne particulates, and volatile organic compounds - VOCs) When the home’s air-conditioning system was running, the particulate matter was higher than when the unit was turned off which is an indicator the HVAC system was contributing to the elevation of respirable particulates. The particulates measured as high as 156,543 in the .3 μm size particulate, which should be well below 40,000 and preferably closer to 25,000 and 616 2.5 μm size particulate, which should be below 200 and preferably lower than 100. There were no identified elevations of VOC’s within the home. The air handler closet was found to be open to the attic and not having a closed return air plenum. The plenum was open to a previously water and mold damaged parquet wood floor. This water and mold damage debris was being pulled into the air stream of the HVAC along with the air infiltration from the attic. The water damage to the parquet flooring was extensive and identified throughout the home. The water leaks led to trapped under the wood flooring that was never properly restored. This trapped water supported microbial growth and has caused deterioration of the flooring. The members had a spread white powder throughout their homes parquet flooring that was reported as baking soda. Repair recommendations from 4/1/2011 assessment 1. Remove and replace the parquet flooring using proper containment and HEPA air filtration. 2. Have a licensed HVAC contractor clean the air handler, build a dedicated return plenum, and seal the closet from attic air infiltration. Second assessment of 3/16/2012 The members would like to determine if the new repairs to the air handler are causing nuisance odors and/or indoor air quality issues. The members had repairs to their HVAC which included the necessary repairs to the supply plenum and the air handler closet attic. GOOD However the open return plenum remained open to the water and mold damaged floor. The member homes air circulation continues to be open to the water and mold damaged parquet flooring which was a primary concern of the 4/1/2011 assessment. NOT GOOD. The members also had chemicals of an unknown type and quantity applied to their air handler in an effort to clean and disinfect the ducts and air handler cabinet. The use of chemicals is never prescribed by Microshield and is NEVER in our recommendations to our Clients. NOT GOOD. The members also had a UV light installed in their supply plenum. Another attempt at killing and disinfecting the air of their home as opposed to the actual repairing of the identified cause and origin of the indoor air quality issues. The water and mold damaged parquet wood flooring throughout their home. NOT GOOD. The UV light was so strong it melted the paint off of the closest supply air vent in the member's living room and was causing substantial damage to the duct board supply plenum. This was accompanied by the newly reported chemical odor that was now causing headaches. NOT GOOD. Follow up visit of 4/11/2012 No repairs to the floor were made. NOT GOOD. No repairs to the open return air plenum were made. NOT GOOD.

I had had a health issue which I suspected might have been caused by our indoor air quality, and my wife had had coughing problems as well. I called upon Microshield to assess our air quality. They arrived soon after and , with the help of a variety of technical instruments used to measure air quality factors, they made their way throughout our house, attic and garage. Their obvious expertise in translating the meaning of these various readings enabled them to identify a kitchen pantry as the primary source of a humidity problem. By identifying the effects of characteristics unique to that room they offered a number of ideas for eliminating the problem. I am currently considering which option to use, and they have assured me that they are always available to answer any questions I may have. In fact, they called me soon after I received their report to offer any assistance I might need.
Description of Work: John & Lydia, the owners & operators of Microshield, performed a thorough assessment of all factors influencing our indoor air quality, including the interiors of 2 A/C air handlers. Additionally, while Lydia continued testing various indoor locations, John went outside & examined the exterior of our house, including the roof. Their final report identified a number of problem areas, both inside & out that we have begun to address. Their final report of 24 pages, including photos, was invaluable in helping us to understand how & why problems develop & how to correct them. It translated some very technical analysis & results into layman's terms that was both interesting & helpful as we addressed our problem areas.

Overall, it was a very good experience working with Microshield.
Description of Work: We had a shower leak, which caused some mold damage in our master bathroom. John and Lydia came the same day we contacted them. They came with all the right equipment to detect the leak and assess the mold situation. They helped us contact the remediation company to come out the next day. They worked closely with the remediation company during the entire process of cleaning up. They also preformed the clearance test after the remediation and had the remediation company do some re-cleaning when they did not pass the test the first time. John and Lydia are very knowledgeable and were very sensitive to our needs . Their degree of professionalism and care was above our expectation . They were very dependable and provided us with all the documents as they promised. We would highly recommend them to anyone who may need their services.

It is easy to get in touch with Microshield. They schedule their services quickly and are flexible with times and dates. They follow up and work to make sure they are in contact with you, as well as understand what your needs are. If you have or suspect a mold or air quality problem, start with this company - they know their business. Their prices are comparable to the market and their response to emails or phone calls has been consistent and fast. Update 3/11/2012: I had an unidentified odor and called Microshield again. Lydia answered and told me they were out of town at a seminar. But she cheerfully took my call, chatted with me about my concerns, and set up an appointment for the day they got back in town. Fortunately, the odor seems to have resolved (long story) and I let Lydia know that I would not need them to do more testing. But how reassuring to know that they would come out again, quickly, and take the time to review my file prior to coming. I was in a panic - knowing there is a provider who can and will help made me feel a lot better. Again - I highly recommend this company.
Description of Work: We had mold testing done previously which identified the type of mold, but did not pinpoint the source. I looked at Microshield's website and was impressed, so I called for an appointment and spoke to Lydia. They did a very thorough job of testing and inspecting the house. They identified a problem in our AC closet that had never been found in 20 years of living here and that will fix the AC issues we have had for a long time. We have annual AC inspections, so I was shocked. The AC closet is actually pulling air from the attic, which vented to the outside, which is likely the reason there is such a high particulate count in the house and why the house is so hard to keep cool in the summer. They also identified the source of the mold. We were puzzled about the source since we had not had any roof leak in many years and no water runs on that side of the house. We received the report as promised, via email.

We discovered that a toilet had been leaking from the base into a plywood subfloor due to an insufficiently thick wax ring. By the time we called MicroShield, the air in the home smelled musty, and all three of our children were complaining of stomach pain and other odd symptoms. They mapped the moisture beneath our wood floor, and talked us through a very conservative approach to identifying the problem and cleaning out our home. Their tests identified the bacteria that was making the kids ill, and their moisture maps by infrared camera led to the discovery of some nasty mold behind our kitchen cabinets. They worked very well with our insurance company, and even rewrote invoices so that I could submit appropriate ones to our adjustor and pay out of pocket for additional testing I requested. I also felt they were truly interested in fixing the problem. This is a husband and wife team who seem to have made it their mission to standardize mold remediation to a national level. They were meticulous and professional throughout, and very responsive to my questions. Their prices were very fair, and they were conservative in their counseling as far as sampling is concerned. They are not alarmists, they will not try to instill panic in order to convince you to test every inch of your house for mold. My only minor complaint is that there were a few occasions when they were not prompt in returning phone calls or texts, or communications were a bit unclear, but even that was only a day or two of lag time at the most. I am the type of homeowner who asks lots of questions, and I think overall they did their best to answer them.
Description of Work: The services provided included: Air Quality Testing before and after remediation of water damage due to plumbing leak Bacteria Swab Testing before and after remediation of water which leaked from the base of a toilet and was therefore contaminated Drafting of a Remediation Protocol to provide the company tearing out damaged materials. This protocol was written to meet national standards, giving a very specific guideline to the remediation company. Infrared mapping of the building envelope to determine source of water damage. Detailed analysis of humidity and other conditions inside the home in order to minimize damage. A final report was provided which described in detail the types of mold and bacteria found in the home, how they were removed, and that the post-test results indicated successful removal of both.
