It was Friday later afternoon. I called a number of highly recommended / awarded companies on Angie's list. Ewing & Ewing was the first company that would be able to send someone the same evening. The person on the phone clearly explained the overtime rate and also informed me that I could wait till the morning and pay the standard rate. I chose to have the person come that evening. Jeremy showed up in a few hours and quickly diagnosed the problem. It was just a loose wire. I would not have known the difference. Jeremy was friendly and honest. I will use Ewing & Ewing again when needed!

I called and was told that someone would return my call within 60 minutes and Ray did. He gave me his cell phone number to give my tenant, and he talked my tenant through a procedure that got the equipment cooling the apartment. Several days later, my tenant noticed a leak. We called them again and they arranged to be there within a time frame that was convenient for my tenant's partner to be home to let them in. The leak was up in the attic. The technician called me and told me what it would cost and then did the repair for a reasonable fee.
Description of Work: My tenant came home to an apartment without air conditioning after 5pm on the Friday before Monday, the 4th of July.

On Friday, July 1st we noticed that the air conditioning unit was not cooling the house. At about 1:00 p.m. we called Ewing & Ewing and asked for a service call. We received a call from the first technician at 3:45 p.m. saying he would be at the house in 30 minutes. At about 5:00 p.m. we called him back and he told us he was sick and that a second technician (Chris) would be coming to the home. We called the office who confirmed that we were next one Chris's appointment list but they could not give a time for his arrival. We received a call from a third technician (Ray) saying he would be at the house in 30 minutes. Ray arrived about 6:00 p.m. and quickly diagnosed the problem as a defective condenser fan motor. He said that since it was after 5:00 p.m. on the Friday before a three-day weekend, he could not get the part from the warehouse or confirm whether the part was under warranty. He said he would take care of it first thing on Tuesday. We paid him for the diagnostic fee of $74.. It is my opinion that the air conditioner could have been repaired on Friday if the technicians had arrived when initially scheduled (before 5:00 p.m.) saving from being out of the house for four nights. On Tuesday morning around 8:00 a.m., we received a call from a technician who had checked that the part was under warranty and that he would be at the house in about 10 minutes (we were not home yet). When we arrived home about 30 minutes later;he was already disassembling the outside unit. He completed the work by about 10:30 a.m. He was very professional and efficient and appeared to do a good job. The total cost of the "labor" was $429.00 plus the original $74 diagnostic fee. Although I agreed to the amount before the work began, this is an outrageous amount. I asked him to call the office to confirm the price which he did and the price did not change.

We have been satisfied customers for over 10 years until we bought another a/c unit for $3,467 which was installed early January 2015. After they installed, the unit never cooled the home properly and we have had several technician visits, but to date no one has been able to correct the problem. I called them early this week and advised them the house was not cooling again and arranged for a technician to check it as well perform the semi-yearly maintenance that I always prepay for. He came out yesterday and added refrigerant and was able to get the temperature to drop a few degrees. Today, I put the thermostat at 71 degrees since I was doing house chores and I cannot get it to go below 75. Very frustrated and Very upset, I called them again and spoke to the mother and advised her that we are now at the point that we need to get the unit replaced under warranty since they cannot repair the unit. She refused and then hung up on me since I became so upset. Then, my husband called back and spoke to her son. They are now refusing to repair or replace this unit and told us they are parting ways. He went on to tell us that this is the problem you get with equipment that is not made in America. I don't how this company stays in business. They say they stand by their service but obviously that is a lie. I WILL NEVER RECOMMEND THIS COMPANY AGAIN! Now, I have to contact the manufacturer direct and see if they will assist.

This was the first time we have used Ewing & Ewing for servicing of our Trane A/C unit. Our previous company which we had used since the unit was installed in 2007 changed ownership so we looked on Angie's list for a replacement company. The price posted was for an annual plan that includes two service visits a year. The service technician (Al) inspected and tested the unit and found no problems that needed to be addressed. He was very professional an appeared to do a thorough job. He arrived within the time window we were given and gave us a call 30 minutes in advance. He sealed up the unit and cleaned up the work area. My only relatively minor complaint with the company is that their policy for an appointment window is four hours and we would only be called 30 minutes before the technician would actually arrive. Now a days, two-hour appointment windows are more typical.

E&E associates are very friendly, professional people, from the receptionist to the service providers. They explain what they are doing, and every tune-up has resulted in a very clean unit. They provide a review and give you a 'heads up' on the age of the unit and potential issues to look for, without mis-representing the issues or trying to up-sell you something you don't need.
Description of Work: Ewing & Ewing came out and provided annual maintenance on my A/C. I originally purchased a coupon offer through Angie's List, and have since continued with their service, purchasing an annual maintenance contract.

For the last few years, our rental a/c unit has been under a bi-annual general maintenance contract with Ewing & Ewing which has an annual cost of $179.95 and includes two maintenance calls ? one every six months. General maintenance is covered and a 20% off discount is applied to labor or parts if repairs are needed. March 23rd was the first maintenance check for this year, and we were told the unit was running fine. Two and a half months later, the unit suddenly died. We were on vacation visiting our son in Washington State when this happened. It was mid-June and temperatures were in the 90s here in Florida. Our tenants both work from home ? so we needed to fix or replace the a/c unit ASAP! We paid Ewing & Ewing for an additional service call on June 15th to verify whether the unit could be repaired or needed to be replaced. The service technician, Anthony, determined we needed a new A/C, and he recommended a 3 ½ ton unit. This size unit also required installing larger lines ? which meant additional costs. While we wanted to get a larger unit, we were not convinced we needed to up-size from a 2 ½ to a 3 ½ ton. Our home is 1470 sq. ft, with newer doors and windows, and excellent insulation. Since a unit too large for the house could cool off the house too quickly, shutting off before removing moisture from the home, I asked the technician for a quote on a 3 ton unit, but he insisted I needed a 3 ½ ton, so I asked him to send me documentation on the official criteria or formula used to determine this, and he said he would. I didn't realize I would wait two days for this documentation, and when I received it, I was already familiar with most of the information. The one recommendation I was not familiar with ? was his claim - that a ton was needed for every 400-450 sq ft; this was new to me! This criteria, however, was presented as his opinion - because he didn?t back it up with any official guidelines as promised. In his email, he also advised me (and home-owners in general) not to research a/c requirements online because there are multiple factors involved and a lot of bad advice online. I was not convinced and still insisted on a quote for a 3 ton unit. I wanted to stay with Ewing & Ewing because: I had been a customer for a long time; the recent service charge would be excused with the purchase of a new a/c unit from them; my tenants were living and working without a/c, and this stress was ruining our brief vacation. I had no intention of seeking other quotes or opinions until I felt pressured by the technician. Then, I realized I had to get another opinion. I located two a/c companies with good reviews on Angie?s list. Each did an inspection of my home and current a/c unit, and BOTH recommended that I up-size to a 3 ton unit. I never mentioned that I was questioning the need for a 3 ½ ton unit. I wanted their opinions to be free of any influence from me. I chose a company, not only based on their quote, but more importantly on the demeanor of the owner. A Three ton unit was installed, and we are very happy with it. The new unit is under warranty and a service contract is no longer needed, so I contacted Ewing & Ewing and explained the situation in detail. I explained my disappointment that I could not purchase my new unit from them. Since I had only used the first of two pre-paid maintenance calls, one intended every 6 months, and this whole situation happened within the first six months of the year, I asked that I be refunded $90 (half of the initial $180) for the unused (2nd 6 month) maintenance call. I don?t think I would have received any refund had I not called at least three times. Each time, I was told the owner, Mrs. Ewing, would return my call. Mrs. Ewing never called me! She denied me the opportunity to explain the situation and instead sent me a check in the mail for only $31 of the $90 owed to me. She took back the discounts that I received for the first 6 months of my paid service contract. This was wrong! When the terms of the service contract were explained to me, NEVER did the Ewing & Ewing rep explain that if my a/c unit died, I would still have to pay for the 2nd 6 month service call or lose all discounts previously provided under the paid portion of my contract! I was a long-time customer under a bi-annual service contract. I wanted to purchase my new a/c unit from Ewing & Ewing but was being pressured into a larger a/c unit than was needed. I insisted on another bid, but it took the technician, Anthony, FOUR days to provide me with a quote on a 3 ton unit. I requested the bid on June 15th and finally got it on June 19th! My tenants were without a/c while we waited! They became furious, and I had to go with another company. I contacted Breath Healthier Air on June 18th and they inspected my home and provided me with a bid later that evening. I accepted and we scheduled the install for the next day. They installed a new 3 ton a/c unit on June 19th, the same day Ewing & Ewing finally sent me their proposal. I called Ewing & Ewing several times and tried to explain the situation; each time, I was told Mrs. Ewing makes all decisions and would return my call, but she never did! Lastly, if I had known Ewing & Ewing would insist on selling me too large a unit and delay sending me a proposal for four days, I never would have scheduled and paid for their most recent service call. This cost was refundable if I purchased a new unit from them, but I couldn?t continue to wait for them to get back with a proposal (let alone an install). If I combine the cost for this wasted service call with the amount of previous discounts they took back from me, and then factor in the additional $153 of pro-rated rent, lost while I waited for their bid, Ewing & Ewing cost me $337 and much inconvenience! For all these reasons, I do NOT recommend Ewing & Ewing.
Description of Work: Our A/C was under a bi-annual service maintenance contract with Ewing & Ewing, and we paid for an additional service call ($125) on June 15th after our A/C unit died. We requested a bid on a new unit.

Response from Ewing & Ewing Air Conditioning
Ok where to start. This customer called with a service call June 15th 2015 after 4pm. I James Ewing, personally took the phone call. It was the members I cannot recall which one it was. I setup a service call for their rental location where their tenants are living. The Homeowners were not available to meet with payment for the service call. I agreed to allow my technician to call them for payment and they said they would definitely answer his call. After the service call was completed, my technician called them 8 times. No answer. Then the tenant texted the homeowner and they responded immediately, but would not return our calls for payment. The unit was not repairable and needed replacement. The next day our comfort consultant Anthony went to the home for an estimate on replacing the unit. The customer had a 2.5 ton unit existing. The home is almost 1500 sq. ft. In our experience, we quote units at 400 sq. ft. per ton so that units do not fight the heat and run all day long to keep your home cool, and the expense of high electric bills. There is a fine line between over sizing and under sizing a system. The tenants have a home D.J. recording studio room with equipment in it that put off extra heat load. Someone had put the undersized 2.5 ton system in previously and the tenants mentioned it ran all the time. This home would have had a 3 ton originally. So in the real world we only wanted to upsize the unit a 1/2 ton. This would account for the sq. footage and the increased heat load of the D.J. equipment. Anthony called, and e-mailed our 3.5 ton quote that evening. The next day the tenant called offering to pay out of pocket and get reimbursed the money for the ac system, because they were extremely hot and were extremely frustrated that they could not reach the homeowners themselves. We felt the ethical decision was to not get in the middle of a landlord/tenant decision. We told the tenants we would keep attempting to reach the homeowners. On June 17th ,The homeowners finally called Anthony. The homeowner mentioned he wanted a Trane quote also, and also mentioned he would not be available by email. We got the Trane unit quote together and spent the next 2 days calling the homeowner to give him the quote asap as his tenants were really hot. After no answer for 2 days we finally e-mailed the quote against the initial wishes of the customer because he was not answering the phone as he had mentioned. The homeowners were on vacation and got back on June 20th . IT WAS 4 DAYS FOR THE HOMEOWNERS TO MAKE A DECISION, NOT 4 DAYS FOR US TO PROVIDE A QUOTE! The customer mentioned multiple times above that he had a service contract. We only have maintenance contracts, that provide 20% discounts to our Air1 Club members. The customer wanted all of his money back after using discounts on service calls DURING THE CURRENT YEAR CONTRACT. For example If you had a 500.00 large part replacement service call you would receive 100.00 discount. 6 months later you cannot cancel the maintenance agreement and get the full maintenance agreement cost back. That is just not how things work. The customer also mentioned lost rent from their tenants. The homeowner being unreachable by cellphone or e-mail is what the problem was. We would have been able to install a new ac system the day after our initial visit. It is the homeowners issue that they were not responding or able to respond to our repeated attempts and their tenants repeated attempts to reach them. It is unfortunate that this problem occurred while the homeowners were out of town, but we were standing at the ready to provide outstanding service. I personally called the customer about this post and mentioned that I have e-mail dates and phone records of our attempts to contact them. She said that she didn't care and was allowed to post her 'opinion'. Past, Present and Future customers, please take this as the utmost truth as we are a very ethical company. Thank you, James R. During a scheduled maintenance on my A/C it was recommended that I think about getting a new unit because of the age of the one I had and the fact that it was not performing as efficiently as it should. I decided to go ahead with getting a new unit and a representative came out that afternoon with a proposal. I accepted the proposal and we scheduled the installation for 6/17 between 11 am and 3 pm. The workers from Ewing and Ewing were at my home at 11:30 am on 6/17 and had the a/c, condenser and thermostat up and running by about 2 pm. The three young men were very efficient and professional. They cleaned up everything and took away the old units with nothing for me to clean up when they were gone. No surprises or additional costs during the process.

The company was prompt, the technicians polite and professional and the price was competitive. We ended up signing a bi-annual maintenance contract with the company, one of which has since been performed. The technician was very patient in explaining the work he performed which was very helpful to us, since we have had a poor experience with one of their competitors in the past. We are looking forward to a professional relationship with this provider.

A Ewing representative called and said he would be here within 20 minutes. He arrived in about 15 minutes. He was professional, courteous, efficient. We were so impressed with them when we had a problem about 1 1/2 years ago. They fixed that and we have been having them come every 6 months since then to try to stretch out the life of our unit. They have provided excellent service!!! Their service contract provides 2 calls plus other benefits.

The A/C at my rental home finally went after about 12 years, leaving my excellent tenants without cool air. Good thing it is "winter" in Florida. Ewing & Ewing came right out the day I called, figured out the problem and gave me a reasonable quote for a new unit. They even gave me a discount for paying in cash. I was most impressed that they brought a portable A/C unit for my tenants' bedroom to hold them over until the new unit came in. It only took a few days to get the new equipment. The crew showed up early and finished the work quickly. I was very satisfied and would use them again.

I knew it was time to replace my old air conditioning system, so I thought I would get a couple of quotes. After getting 3 quotes I finally decided that Ewing & Ewing was the best fit for me. Don't get me wrong, they weren't the cheapest in town but I know its South Florida and you get what you pay for. I called and Chris answered the phone, he was very pleasant and extremely knowledgeable. I know nothing about air conditioning systems, but he explained things so easy for me to understand. He scheduled Anthony to come out and give me a quote. Anthony arrived with a smile on his face and a nice English accent. He took the time to take proper measurements of the freon lines and where the air conditioning pieces where going to go (unlike the other companies did). He went back to his truck, put the proposal together and came back inside with a very nice looking proposal that was all typed up nicely that explaining the whole process. The installers Jimmy and Shawn came out the next day and they too were both extremely professional and knowledgeable, and not to mention very clean. I highly recommend Ewing & Ewing Air Conditioning.

Cont'd from above... I don't know whether this guy was having a bad day or is just is that arrogant and condescending. Hopefully he'll realize someday that customers can vote with their wallets regarding who to use. I will NEVER use them again simply because I ABSOLUTELY do NOT want to speak with him again. I am quite sure that there are other HVAC providers in Palm Beach County who actually care about their customers - this guy surely does NOT.
Description of Work: I've been a Ewing & Ewing customer for several years. Three years ago I had them install a new HVAC system in my condo at a cost of several thousand dollars and have regularly had them come out to service my unit since. Their service technicians were always good and professional. I recently called to get a routine service done and perhaps have a couple of things checked out. After talking with the man who answers their phone and schedules their techs (I believe his name is Chris) - I'd had enough and decided there had to be another provider who, at least, acted like he cared about me as a customer.

Response from Ewing & Ewing Air Conditioning
We work very hard to serve EVERY "no cool" customer the same day they call. This particular customer called to schedule his routine maintenance. He demanded it be scheduled within a few days. In the summer our customers who are not cooling take precedence. Our summer schedule allows us to perform only a few routine tune ups per day. We, ethically, cannot perform routine tune ups on units that are cooling fine and leave our other customers that are not cooling and without air conditioning to be hot and miserable. This has been our policy and reputation for 37 + years.

Technicians arrived a few minutes early and started work promptly. Canvas runners were put down to protect my wood floors from any damage. Thank you Ewing and Ewing for that!. The total price was $4670.00 before the FPL rebate and the Angie's list coupon, so my final cost was $3995.00. There was a minor issue with the an optional UV light add-on that I declined with the salesman, still on the invoice, but was removed and the price adjusted with NO problem. In 4 hrs the new unit was installed and working. I couldn't be more satisfied and will use this company again for A/C maintenance.
Description of Work: Replaced A/C air handler and condenser with new Rheem unit
