Description of Work: i live in an area of South Tampa that typically floods after heavy rain. We live on Bayshore Blvd. directly across the street from the bay. We just experienced a 100 year flood event and I was literally facing a situation which could possibly have destroyed my home. As I stood watching helplessly, the bay and rain floodwater was coming into my front yard and threatening to come into my home. bayshore had been completely underwater for 3 days and the rain and wind was not stopping. I frantically started calling friends to see if anyone knew anyone who could help me get sandbags to protect the perimeter of my house. Finally, we found a lawn service who was off that day and they sent 4 guys to pick up sandbags and bring them to my home. One of my friends called Omar Miranda (whom she has used many times for renovations at her restaurant). Omar called me within five minutes of her call and asked what he could to help. He went to Home Depot and personally loaded over 45-40 lb. sandbags into his van, picked up another man and came to my home ready to work. The bay was continuing to flood water and threaten all the homes and the road was closed and completely under water. Omar directed the other workers on the proper placement of the bags and he worked for hours lining the walls with plastic and placing sandbags in areas which would stop the water from entering the home. After they had worked non stop all day, he actually seemed embarrassed to ask for payment. I had paid Home Depot over the phone with a credit card and he asked for a mere $75.00 for his labor. (including his co-worker). He said to call him immediately if the water continued to rise and he would come back and bring more bags to block the doorways. I told him the roads were flooded and he might not be able to get to my house. He responded with a reassuring, "don't worry, if you need my help, I will find a way." That evening the winds kept blowing and the water continued to rise. I called him in a panic and he said he would run to Home Depot and come back. This time, he arrived with another 45 bags, each weighing 50 lbs. He and his friend blocked the doors and helped me move furniture inside the house to higher ground and roll up rugs. Luckily, the water never entered my home. The sandbags prevented water from entering and flooding the entire backyard and pool and also from flooding under the house. After the danger had passed, I called Omar to come move the bags. He came with one worker and spent the entire day loading 150 sandbags into my garage and his van. He was able to return about 40 sandbags for a store credit. I paid him and his worker 300.00. I have never seen anyone work as hard as Omar. Not only was he kind, considerate and immensely professional, the fact that he was so willing to come during a time of such emergency and actually risk his own personal safety for a total stranger is amazing , and for this he will have my eternal gratitude. My friend who runs the restaurant has used Omar for major renovations as well as minor repairs for many years. I have hired him to do some small repairs and will keep his number handy for any job large or small. Omar came to America from Puerto Rico less than 5 years ago and got a job moving boxes at a nice hotel. Within a month, he was promoted and named employee of the month. Within the year, he was employee of the year and had risen to chief engineer. He is truly an amazing person and I would not hesitate to recommend him for any job, large or small.
