WILL HUNTER FINE FURNITURE LEATHER REPAIR does good work. However, his business practices aren't fair. He charges by the hour and I think he takes advantage of that. He charges for his set-up and his clean-up, included in the hour, instead of just his working time, which isn't appropriate. He also charges a $45.00 fee for his travel time, just to get to your house. No one pays me to drive to work, so I don't think that's fair, that he charges people to go to your house to work. He says he charges that travel fee to everybody, regardless of how close they are to his business. I negotiated the total price down from his original price of $184.00 to what I ended up paying, which was $146.00. I still think $146.00 is high. He takes advantage of the customer. He charges from the minute he steps into the customer's door until the minute he walks out of the customer's door, which includes set-up and clean-up time. He took 20 minutes to clean up at my home. It's not fair. He does really good work though. He argued with me when I negotiated for a lower price. He was defending himself rather than taking the customer's problem into consideration. He wasn't very professional. I've used him in the past, and he was much more professional and reasonable with his price at that time. He didn't charge me for travel time or set-up and clean-up before. I'm not happy at all with his professionalism.

Response from WILL HUNTER FINE FURNITURE LEATHER REPAIR
Wow this was a mouth full. But Okay lets see if i can give a fair response to Mrs. [Member's name removed] First to begin with you were well informed of all the charges up front before i ever drove out to your home. I charge a trip fee out to cover time and expense spent to drive to your home which includes tools and supplies. I am not driving up in a compact car like a Honda either, its a commercial ford van which cost real money in fuel and upkeep to run and drive around all day. Which is a fair business practice. Most companies call this a trip fee. " No one pays me to drive to work" If I recall correctly your gripe about the cost ( and this was after i had finished the work and you were quite satisfied ) was because you were unemployed and were on a tight budget. Which was not my problem and you should have mentioned that to me before i did any business with you. I may have reconsidered doing the work at all. If you cant afford it then you shouldn't try to renegotiate the cost after the work is complete. If I get to a customers home and they decides they do not want the service or can not afford the service then i can leave and the customer would only owe me for the trip out. The service is charged separately and is for the time spent at you home from the time i arrive till i leave. The reason i decided to take this practice was due to the fact many people ask for extra work while i am already there and since trying to recalculate repair costs on the fly is too time consuming and often not cost effective. By me charging by the hour i can work without the need to nickle and dime the customer for every little repair. If the customer sees thing are looking good and wants more then more could be done and the cost is already understood. if the customer does not want more then no more needs to be done. What is done in the home is all part of the repair service. When working with dyes and colors I have to prep the color ( make ) and then clean up ( jars and brushes ) as i go along as this is part of the service because of the materials i am using. I am redyeing / refinishing the surface on your expensive furniture with very specialize material and specialize work. To complete the repairs safely in your home it requires me to be ESPECIALLY careful not to spray, spill or drop any of this product in your home. I am not there to paint your house or your walls. I am not a paint contractor, plumber or electrician which you may be comparing me to. The materials i have can and will ruin floors carpet and furniture very easily if care is not taken. The first time I did service for Mrs. [Member's name removed] was in Dec 2012 the original problem she called me for was for her sofa and based on her description I gave her a repair cost of 200.00 over the phone. While she hemmed and hawed about the price she accepted it. At the time i was still toying around with the idea of the trip charge and the hourly repair rate. But since she agreed to the cost of the repairs i let the trip fee slide and did not charge her a trip fee. While i was there repairing the sofa she asked if i could repair the loveseat as well and i did, and added an additional 20.00 to the bill. MORE then fair!!!!! Note : while there she also showed me a small area on a wood frame foot-board that was previously repaired by some one else who clearly didn't know what they were doing. She, after seeing what i could do, asked if i could fix it better and I said I could but since it was a wood frame finish issue i would need to return on another day with the correct type of materials, that particular day I was working there on her leather couch and using leather finishes not wood finishes. I quoted her a price of $65.00 plus tax. she had mentioned she wasn't in a hurry but would like it to be done. As a good gesture I said I would return on a day that i was in the area so as not to have to make a special trip and charge a service call. I was hoping to get another service call out by her way but was not able to get one that would coincide with her schedule. Almost 4 months past and in March of 2013 i ended up making a special trip out anyway. Did not charge her trip fee and ended up spending more time than estimated because the small area she originally showed me was now not so small as she originally had said. ( AGAIN ended up fixing more...... as usual ) But I fixed it anyway just to keep the customer happy. Here again another example why I went to the hourly repair rate. " I'm not happy at all with his professionalism" I don't pull punches I don't lie I am respectful to all but I make it very clear this is not a hobby but a very specialized business. It cost money to learn how to repair, to understand what to use in a repair, to keep material in stock for the repairs and as well to run and operate a business . While i am very generous with my time I do have limits and don't appreciate half truths.

There are very few people that do this sort of repair, even on Angie's. I talked with several people and emailed them pictures of the areas that needed fixing. Will's was the most reasonable estimate. While we set up a date and time in advance it just so happened he had a cancellation and was able to come to our home several days before our original appointment. He did an excellent job on the repairs; you truly cannot tell where the repairs were made. He's pleasant, knowledgeable, and professional.
Description of Work: Will stitched up a seam that had come apart on my leather sofa as well as closed the opened seam on one of the cushions.
