For the prequel to this episode, please see my report on Red Cap Plumbing. They referred my problem to Mr. Wayne Minton of Spring Fresh Water Consultants, who contacted me within a couple of hours. He was willing to come out immediately at no charge to look at my aging, non-working water softener and iron filter, but was also flexible enough to wait until I got home from work in the late afternoon. After checking my system, he explained in detail how the whole thing was supposed to work. Some went over my head, but I absorbed enough to realize that this gentleman was going to make my current set-up work properly and wasn't going to try and sell me something I really couldn't afford at the present time. Then he explained everything that he was going to do and quoted me a price for the job. I was almost in tears (of gratitude!) when he left, promising to return that Friday to do the job. The next day, Thursday, he called to see if he could come out that evening to retrieve both timer heads and take them with him in order to make sure there were no surprises when he did the bulk of the work on Friday. In his effort to save me some money, he took them to a friend of his who, if I interpreted correctly, wound up rebuilding both. He showed me the bag of gears, plugs, gizmos, and other nameless parts that were worn out, burned out, or rusted beyond recognition so I could see what we were up against. All that unforeseen work brought the price up a bit, but it saved me from having to purchase brand new timer heads, and I was still thrilled that the whole thing was being put right. I also realized that Mr. Minton was putting an awful lot of prep time into my job before he actually got here for the grande finale. If he had charged me his normal $50/hour labor fee, I probably would have fainted. This man is extremely generous and kind. Once he got here on Friday afternoon, he wasted no time. After putting the chlorine into our pipes and hot water heater, he gave instructions not to turn on any faucets, then quickly took care of both cyclinders. He dumped the used greensand (which is really black, not green - go figure) from the iron filter, cleaned out both cyclinders, re-set the pipes, found the clogged pipe on the outside wall and cut it, explaining that we could just let the overflow wash harmlessly into the dirt there at the side of the house. He even used some of the old greensand to fill a few holes in the side yard! Then he brought in a bucket with a little muratic (sp?) acid and cleaned off the horrendous rust stains in my kitchen sink and inside my washing machine. He showed me how to tell if the timers were off on both cylinders and how to re-set them if they were (like after a power outage). He told me how often to add the purple stuff (potassium permanganate) to the canister for the iron filter. Then he gave instructions on how long to wait before we flushed the chlorine from our lines. Finally, after all these years of intimidation, I felt in control of my water softening system! Mr. Minton, the dear gentleman, made himself available at any time we might need him. He can also take care of our well pump, which was absolute music to my ears. Hopefully, I won't need his help anytime soon, but it's great to know he's there if the thing decides to act up. He called this morning (Saturday) to ask if we could tell any difference in the water. I believe he had pity on me and my situation, and gave me a break on the real cost of the job. I highly recommend this man for any problems you might have with your water softener or system.
Description of Work: shocked our water lines with chlorine; replaced and/or repaired both timers or heads (not sure of the correct term) of the iron filter cylinder and water softener cylinder; cleaned out both cylinders and put new greensand in the iron filter; fixed a design flaw in one of the outside pipes from the system that had caused it to clog; patiently explained how to check the timers and how often to put the purple stuff in the canister for the iron filter; provided extra mercy and compassion to an obvious idiot (me!) in all things water softener-related.
