We called REM when our heat pump decided to quit working in 80 degree weather. When the technician, Chris, came out he explained everything he was doing and the extent of our problem. We decided to have the owner, Joe, Sr., come out the next day and go over our options. Joe was wonderful in explaining all our options in detail and help us decided on our new system. Our broken unit was so bad he even a technician come out the next day, over a weekend, and put addition freon in the unit. The next Tuesday the crew arrived to install everything. We have never seen a crew work so hard and were so professional. They did an outstanding job. Before they left for the day Joe came back out and inspected everything and wasn't happy on how the air was flowing at one end of the house. Needless to say the technicians were out the next day to improve the air flow. The following week the inspector came out to view the work, and said what a great job REM had done. They were wonderful to work with. However, I wish they would have gone into more detail in explaining everything about our new thermostat...for those of us that are technically challenged.
Description of Work: Our AC unit started to blow warm air instead of cool air one afternoon. When we called REM for service, they came our almost immediately and took care of the problem.

Can't say enough how pleased we were. He came out and spent an hour plus diagnosing the problem. I had a pretty good understanding of the prior work done so I could tell that he was giving me the straight truth. Our unit is entering the stage in life where replacing it makes more sense than spending a lot on it (which is why we had a handyman friend of the family working on it prior). He determined that it was an issue with how the recently replaced fan motor on the outside unit had been wired and resolved it as well as tested the Freon levels to rule out an issue with that. We did not feel pressured to up sell or anything like that... simply a square deal by a professional company.
Description of Work: Determine the cause of our A/C unit not blowing cold air. Correct incorrect prior wiring done by handyman.

I woke early Sunday morning and realized our A/C was running, but not pushing cool air. I turned it off and at 7am called REM to see if they could help us on Sunday. They service man answered the phone immediately, and said he would be able to check out the A/C problem at 10am. He arrived promptly, ran a series of tests, and determined the problem to be a capacitor. He had the part with him and promptly repaired the A/C. He was so professional, we decided to sign up for a contract that would allow us one more A/C & Heater servicing within six months. We also got a discount on the current repair for signing up for the contract. This is a top notch company. The repairman was polite, professional, and explained the problem and what he would do to repair it in detail. Thanks also for the quick service on a Sunday.

I knew next to nothing about home HVAC and called REM first due to Angie's List reports. Also sought two other bids. The only similarities among the bids were the size of the recommended solution -- 3 tons. REM was not the lowest bid, but was not that much more and included the labor warranty. I called Joe at REM because he had taken a lot of time during his first visit to discuss my needs. Frankly, I liked his approach. Joe hadn't quoted me a dual-stage condenser or a variable speed handler whereas the others had provided optional bids on these systems. Joe patiently explained how the systems worked (a couple of times) and the advantages and disadvantages to dual-stage and variable air handlers. During our discussion, I actually requested a more expensive single-stage condenser with a variable speed air handler to achieve a better SEER rating (better efficiency) and humidity control. It's important to note that Joe did not upsell me -- this was my own preference. The team Joe brought to the house was efficient, polite and clean, even though it was blazing hot in the garage and the attic where they had to build out the second return duct. Two days after installation, Joe called me to follow up on the job. I'm delighted with the work and the system.
Description of Work: Replaced gas furnace/condenser with Rheem 15.5 SEER/13 EER heat pump condenser, variable speed air handler and programmable thermostat with humidity control. Expanded size of main air return and added secondary air return to improve air flow to remote rooms. Key differentiators: The Rheem system has best reliability rating of all systems researched. REM, the installer/service provider, also included 10 year labor in addition to the 10 year parts warranty, whereas other installers only offered labor warranties at extra cost.

Our 18-year-old air conditioner was failing. We checked Angie's Lit and found REM to be highly rated. We called Monday evening and set up an appointment for service the next day. Travis was at our home early. His assessment of the equipment was detailed and objective. We decided to replace the unit. Within a short period of time, Joe arrived at our home with detailed pricing and service descriptions. The installation team (4 excellent service technicians) arrived within an hour. They replaced the air handler and heat pump that afternoon. Included in the service was duct repair and system balancing. The cleanliness of their work and care of our property was exceptional. Additionally, the county inspector said it was one of the finest installations he has seen. He also shared positive comments about REM's work at other sites he has inspected. We will use REM in the future and recommend the company to others. CUDOS to REM!

I had a brand new unit installed by a company that used to do my a/c maintenance. they agreed to install it and I didn't know they were not licensed (My mistake). they did a very poor job, the temperature would not cool down and when I called them back asking to come over and fix it, they stopped answering the phone and/or returning my calls. so I called another company (super advertised on google!) and the tech came out. he said that the oustide unit was not positioned correctly and so there was little else he could do. I should have called the 1st company and use the warranty I had with them. yeah like it was an easy thing to do - didn't do much else and charged me $90. 1st company still missing in action. called 3rd company in a moment of desperation. the guy comes out at 9pm, fiddles around, yanks out the protection in front of the outside unit opening (I live in a condo and the outside unit sits in the storage with an opening for air circulation) because he says that prevented the air from blowing correctly. Still not working. he says that it's a problem in the INSIDE unit, will come back the next day. Comes back, changes the compressor part (in warranty), changes the inside unit (again! in warranty), fiddles around with a helper for 2 whole days, at 9pm of the 2nd day says that the unit is working and charges me $800 for the labor. Next morning I find out that when the outside temp rises, the air is NOT conditioned at all. Comes back, says he doesn't know what else to do, the 1st installation was so wrong that it must have ruined some circuits in the outside unit. MAKES ME CHANGE IT AGAIN, this time I had to pay for it - another $1,360 - they bring it over at 6pm on a Friday, 3 people working for 3 hrs, at 9pm they say it's working.. no charge this time "until you call me and say everything works and you're happy". BUT NOTHING WORKED. Saturday the 31st I call him 3 times plus 1 time his partner - never called me back, disappeared. and here's where Joe and RAM come along: I went on Angie's list and selected them. Joe sent me a technician the same day, Dennis fixed the problem (the piston was installed backwards, something that an air-cond tech should have spotted IMMEDIATELY, says Dennis!) and he also fixed a couple of other things that were not right. I finally had fresh air - a few days later I called them back because something was still not quite right and Dennis came out and fixed it. Every time I call them they answer or call back, even on weekend days. The other Sunday I called to schedule an appointment for the next day because I heard a weird noise (I know I am stressed now!) but Joe callled me back immediately and explained me what the noise was. Super nice.
Description of Work: They made my air conditioning work! I had a brand new a/c system which was not correctly installed and the tehnician found the problems: the piston was installed in backwards - he re-installed it correctly, vacuumed lines and coil, added freon, raised blower speed to "high", sealed air leaks around inside unit.

Very helpful on phone and in person. Joe explained to me the problems I was creating (wrong filter & not changing it often enough) and the problems in the system itself (primarily rusted coils, freon leaks, single air return for entire house). He informed me about my options, and recommended replacing the gas furnace with a heat pump, and also discussed options for adding air returns in the remoter part of the house. He informed me about an available TECO rebate as well as available Federal income tax credit if I replace with a 15 SEER rated system. He took a consultative approach, no pressure. We agreed -- together -- to fill my existing system with freon which will take the existing system through the next 2-3 months while I educate myself on the options. He also provided me a very detailed estimate for a new system, and said that the cost of my repair would apply to the new system should I decide to use their bid. A very good experience.
Description of Work: A/C wasn't cooling effectively. Needed to identify the problem and propose a solution. 10 year old gas furnace.

The system was working just fine, we just had routine, annual maintenance which was done on a Friday. The tech was on time and professional. Part of the process was cleaning the drain line. The unit stopped working that Sunday. We called Rem and a tech came out that Sunday, very late afternoon. Turns out, the unit had automatically shut off because the drain line was clogged through the clean out process and the drain pan was filled with water. The tech emptied the drain pan and sucked the line out again. Within a few hours, the unit stopped again for the same reason. I emptied the drain pan to start it up again and left a message with Rem at about 7:30 pm and another one after 8:00 pm. No one called back that evening. With no call back, I took it upon myself to open the line, pour some bleach down the line and use an air pump to blow air down the line to the outside. That seemed to work because the unit drained just fine after that and has continued to run since then. Rem called me first thing Monday morning and offered to come out to check the interior drain pan, but I declined. I understand that the clog may have been an inadvertant consequence of sucking out the drain line which is part of the routine maintenance, but my disappointment is that (1) the tech who returned on Sunday evening didn't check the interior drain pan (as was offered by Rem on Monday morning) to assure the entire line was free of debris and (2) no one called back on Sunday evening, leaving us potentially with an inoperative unit the entire night if I hadn't figured out on my own how to get it working again.

Response from REM Air Conditioning of Tampa
There are two systems at this location. This particular system is 14 years old. The refrigerant was low for which we added 3 lbs. When the refrigerant charge is correct, the system will make more water because the correct charge increases the system’s ability to dehumidify thus making more water. We also quoted a leak search and repair but recommended replacing system due to age and old, worn condition rather than extensive repairs. Eventually the refrigerant will leak out again causing future water problems. It was also noted on the first visit the presence of a build up of algae and rust on the indoor evaporator coil. This debris on and internal of the evaporator coil comes out of the coil which will partially clog the drain line from time to time. We regret this customer is not satisfied with our service. We did not charge the customer to return on Sunday and offered to return free of charge again on Monday but our offer was declined.

Our first call was on Sunday when our old system stopped working. Travis came out within 45 minutes. Our old system was in poor shape and installed improperly (which we sort of knew) about 8 yrs ago before we purchased our home. Travis was able to get it working for the evening and would have Joe call on Monday to discuss options. The fee from Sunday's work would apply to a new system, if we chose that route. Joe came out early on Monday and was very thorough in explaining all the problems with the old system and the improper installation. He suggested going with a heat pump system instead of a new package unit similar to what we already had, and explained the benefits of each option. He also provided us with educational literature and rebate information and a detailed quote, outlining all the work to be done. There were no surprises. The company's schedule looked pretty tight the rest of the week, but he was able to pull all the permits and get a crew out here by noon to start the work and finished everything by 6 or 7 p.m. The crew was friendly, professional and thoroughly cleaned up inside and out before they left. They also installed a new concrete platform for the unit outside and made that area look nice and neat. Joe called the next day to be sure we were happy with the work and to make sure everything was working fine. We are very happy with the work and the professionalism of the crew. This is the first time we've used Angie's list for such major work and we couldn't be happier.
Description of Work: Installed completely new a/c system, including hanging new handler in attic with new drain pan, drain line, safety float switch, removed old system, installed new return air filter in the hallway and new return air duct, installed access in hallway, sealed access under the house, installed new electrical work for new air handler and disconnect for new condenser, new refrigerant line, installed/wired new digital thermostat. Removed old system

From beginning to end, this company is outstanding. Joe came out to do the proposal and spent 3 hours explaining everything that he was going to do and why. I wanted the air handler to be put in the garage. Joe said that he could do it but that it wouldn't be as efficeint, that the old air handler had been improperly installed. In fact, the whole system had been improperly installed. He explained that, properly installed, the air handler was better off left in the attic. He researched the square footage prior to coming, walked around the whole house inside and out, then set about explaining what was needed. Joe was very thorough, his team very professional. Excellent work, excellent company.
Description of Work: Replaced heat pump and air handler, new thermostat, new refrigerant lines, new primary drain line covered by outside metal chase. Removed 2 old air handlers from attic, replaced return air grill and enlarged and replaced return air grill in hall. Checked existing accessible duct work for leaks and repaired where needed. Ensured proper operation of system, clean up and disposal of old system prior to leaving. Price includes all labor, taxes and permit.

I had a new a/c unit installed less than one year ago. The unit was not functioning properly and I had to have it serviced multiple times by the initial install company. A month ago, I began to search for companies on Angies' list to replace this unit since it seemed to be a major problem and I did not want to deal with it anymore. I had three companies come and inspect the unit and give me estimates to replace it. REM was the only company that offered to first fix the problem and if that did not work, they would credit the money toward a new unit. I decided to go ahead with REM and they came out later that week and fixed the problem. My a/c now runs perfectly and I did not need to replace the unit. The staff at REM was very professional and courteous. I would definitely use them in the future and would recommend them to anyone.

Very professional and knowledgeable. Took the time to explain all the options and why certain options where better than others. Gave me a very detailed estimate and a price of $8,500 for a new RHEEM split heat pump including duct work to improve the air flow the back of the house. Decided to go with another company for my new system because they were rated similarly on Angie's List but gave me a much better price.

Prompt, punctual service call. Explained service call $84 minus $5 Angie's discount. Technician very honest, competant, concientious and thorough. Technician even noted that we don't wear shoes in our house, and removed his shoes without asking! Technician troubleshot and found a moderate freon leak in my very old air handler unit. Stated that it could be re-charged, or replaced at a much higher cost. Was very upfront about it being old, and my decision to recharge perhaps was a wasted effort. But he gave me complete information to make the decision. Technician also cleaned out all drain lines, repaired a pcv drain line, cleaned and vacuumed compressor unit, and cleaned the AC filter. The price for a recharge (4 lbs. freon) seemed rather expensive to me. But then again, I haven't had a recharge for several years, and this freon type is becoming outmoded, and going up in price for environmental and manufacturing reasons. Of course, nothing is getting any lower in price lately anyway, and particularly labor is rising in cost. So, I suppose that is probably the going rate for most of the companies. Impressed with company's service and professionalism and would call again, particularly this technician.

I asked three companies for estimates to replace an upstairs heating and air system. I hired Rem based on Angy's report, estimating experience and price. Rem inspected entire system and attic duct work before providing estimate. Joe took at least 30 minutes just inspecting the system. Asked what level of efficiency and tax credits I was expecting. Matched a system with my expectations. Did not try to sell me more than I needed or wanted. Big plus. Other two (highly rated on Angy's) companies just came, took a cursory look at the upstairs system and gave me quotes. 10 minutes max. Only install bump, they neglected to tell me when they were coming - just showed up at 8am. Tarps covered all the floors. Walls and attic were not damaged or scuffed. Every one of the crew was polite and pleasant. Complete clean up. You would never know the Rem team had been here. I had never heard or dealt with this company before reading the Angy's reports. I recommend them without reservations.

Would definitely use REM again. We had to have AC replacement for the downstairs last year and didn't do our due diligence. We were in a hurry because it was July, no AC downstairs which is where all the activity is, had to work, etc....and we made a very bad choice. That company is now out of business. We learned our lesson and interviewed several companies this time...taking almost a week of make a decision. Do your home work before investing this much money.
Description of Work: Needed air conditioning replacement for upstairs unit. Could only use Rheem because of space constraints. Had 3 other contractors out before REM....had 2 estimates. REM was not the cheapest, but gave extras, plus we were convinced that they would do the best job. They use only employees vs subs which is a big plus and they did an excellent job. The crew was here before the scheduled time and worked the entire day without a break to get the job finished....were very polite, professional and cleaned up everything. Joe is the owner and on top of everything. He was actually recommended to me by another AC contractor that could not do the job because we had to have Rheem.

They did a quality job overall. The ductwork was very old and needed replacing. The crew was very clean and reconfigured the ductwork for efficiency and accessibility within the walkin attic. They spent a little longer than they or I expected but it was apparent they wanted to do it right. The estimator and crew were extremely courteous and professional. At no additional cost they constructed a box frame to better protect the flex hosing and also extended the unit power supply line as both are close to the main travel path within the attic. This makes the attic safer and easier to move around in without causing damaged to flex hosing or the main unit. I was contacted after the job was complete to be sure I was satisfied with the final result.
Description of Work: Service unit. Replacement of all the downstairs ductwork, install new supply and return, install larger flex line, increase the size of the existing main return and reroute drain line.

REM arrived less than one hour after my initial call. The drain pan wasn't overflowing and he couldn't find any leak so the stain on my ceiling has probably been there and I didn't notice it before. He stayed over an hour, cleaning the systems inside and out. He indicated that the newer inside unit wasn't installed very well but it will suffice. He recommended that I call someone to put insulation in the attic since it is probably the original insulation and it is less than a couple inches deep. He also indicated the outside unit is older (10-11 years) and that it would need replacement sometime within the next couple of years but to wait til it goes out.
Description of Work: Thought my drip pan was overflowing. Needed semi-annual check-up on my AC system.
