Dennis And Suzanne Powell

I needed someone to remodel a house so I found Dennis in my community doing paint work for a nearby house so I talked to him and he told me he could do everything I needed. He came couple days later and gave me estimates of things that needed to be done but at the end he insisted on giving me a package deal for all the work he was going to do for me. It was about $6000 for labor only (I would supply everything he needed) which seemed to be an ok price. In two days he had a contract ready with everything listed in it. The price was a little higher then what we talked but he said he would adjust it and he wanted $4000 up front on the first day he starts the job. When I told him that I was not really comfortable fronting him so much money for jobs that were not even started his wife Suzanne got really upset and started yelling at me telling me this is how they do business. Dennis and I agreed on $2000 up front which I still didn’t like but I went for it. He also wanted me to rent a dumpster for all the derbies of the house which I did and paid for that same day. He was supposed to get the new corrected contract the next day but this was a failure. For the next 5 days I called and left several voice and text messages with no response from him. After the 5th day I ran into him and he told me that he is aware of my calls but we needed to talk about the price. I agreed and told him to stop over my house and we can talk. He never did. I called and left a voice and a text message wanting to know what is going on. This same night he emailed me telling me that he couldn’t do the job because there was no trust in me. He wanted me to trust him and front him $4000, $2000 was not enough. At the end Dennis and Suzanne wasted 10 days of my time and left me with a bill of $325 for the portable dumpster.

We own several rental properties and was looking for someone to do some laminate or painting in a town home prior to it being rented. Usually we do the work ourselves. My realtor recommended Dennis and Suzanne Powell and said they had done work on some properties she was managing. It took them several days to return my call. When they did, it was Sunday and we were in the process of priming and painting in our town home. They agreed to finish the painting on Wednesday at $100 per room, which we thought sounded like a good deal, so we stopped working and packed up, leaving the room taped off and primed, and leaving the other bedroom untouched. When Wednesday morning came, they had wanted to start at 9. I gave them the lock box code since I couldn't be there right away. I had arranged for a babysitter. I called at 9:15 to tell them I was on the way to meet them and just make sure of everything. I got Suzanne on the phone. She said Dennis wasn't there, was getting gas, and would call me in 10 minutes to tell me when they would start the job. She mentioned she forgot she had another appointment that day. Anyway, they did not return the call. I called again at 11:30 and left a message. At 1230 I called my realtor who also tried to reach them. They didn't return my call at all on Wednesday. I called again on Thursday afternoon and Dennis was not too apologetic for not showing up AND NOT CALLING (!). I think he was finishing up something else. Anyway, he said they could do the painting on Friday morning at 9:30. Great, I thought, we were back on track. I hired the babysitter again for Friday. I was going there anyway to meet a plumber. On Friday morning Dennis called to cancel at 830am, 1 hour before they were supposed to start. He said he had gotten 7 AC calls and 2 were change-outs. I asked when they could do the work. When pressed he said maybe the following end of week. Basically, he got calls for some higher paying work and just dropped us. I understand that being without AC in the summer counts as an emergency, but they had committed to our job first. He is a handyman, not an employee of an AC company. I just didn't like the way everything played out and how they were so bad about communicating. I didn't trust that they would even get to the painting at all the following week and we just can't wait forever. I told him to forget it and that he lost my business. He didn't seem very apologetic again, maybe they are busier than they can handle. Maybe they do great work, IF you can get them to do it.
