Description of Work: Just came out for an estimate of installing a french drain by using a trench of sand. They were overpriced and spoke unprofessionally of other companies. They told me it would be a sand trench and grass would eventually grow over it. I explained to them that we didn't have much sod where they would be digging and asked about how they would cover it since in their photo gallery not one photo showed a visible trench. They said grass would cover it. When I said we didn't have grass to cover it they laughed and said "then it will look like the rest of your yard. Nothing but sand!". I DID receive a list of people to call and ask for a testimony but when I asked if they had contacted this list of people to ask if it was alright that they give out their number they said they didn't ask them. I did not feel it was right to give out clients names and phone numbers without consent. Although they were punctual and knowledgable they were rude and unprofessional. I would never use them.

Dennis was walking around the neighborhood the week before and had spoken to me about our trees needing some trimming work. He gave me an estimate on the spot and explained what needed to be done. It really was perfectly timed as we were thinking about having this done soon in preparation for hurricane season; not to mention one of the trees, a pine, was dropping needles all over part of the roof of our home. He had said that they would be in the neighborhood on Wednesday and left me with a flyer. I called them on Tuesday saying that I wanted to go ahead and schedule them to trim our trees. He said he'd call back to confirm the date. When we got home from running errands that Tuesday, they were already there working - like 12 guys all over our property - a veritable hive of activity. They were there for a good 40 minutes and had even cleaned up the pine needles from the roof. They also gave us information that the big webs in our pecan tree weren't bad and didn't need to be cut out (apparently, they're worms/spiders that assist in pollination). Overall thoughts: they were quick and professional and reasonably priced (another tree company had given us an estimate of $350 for 2 trees). They moved plants and chairs out of the way in the back of the house and didn't leave a mess of tree trimmings at the end of it. Chairs and plants weren't returned to their places, but that didn't bother me that much as we're still constantly rearranging back there.
Description of Work: Trimmed 3 trees on our property - two in front and one in the back. - 1 pine in front, trim it up, remove branches from over the house - 1 pecan tree in front, trim it up, thin it out, remove branches from over carport - 1 camphor tree in back, trim it up, thin it out (big branches had already started dropping during a few windy nights)

He was going to send me references, and then I was to send him half of the payments. He never sent me the references. When I tried to call him on numerous occasions, he never returned my calls.
Description of Work: We went through the process of deciding what I wanted, where I wanted it put and we agreed on a price.

After phoning Mark, B and Bobby arrived and had the front yard sodded before I knew it. They did not disrupt my busy day with needless hand holding. I received instructions on watering and maintenance once the yard was in and they were gone. It is nice to deal with people who know their craft nowadays. Not always the case with others.
Description of Work: I have been a personal customer of Marks for the past three years as well as hiring him to do work for clients. He has always responded quickly and in a professional manner. He is a "can do" individual that knows his business. I have never had any issues with Mark because I listen to his suggestions and follow them as he is the "expert". He installed a new lawn for me at short notice because I had house guests coming and after water restrictions, my lawn was dead. He has returned twice since then to recalibrate my sprinkler system, and always takes my call. We are planning to do a courtyard in stone this fall at my residence as well. I have done interiors and exterior spaces for years and value what Mark brings to the table. I highly recommend him and his team

I told Mark about the flooding in one area and he said it was because the sidewalk was so low there. So I agreed that for an additional charge I would have them tile that area and then seal all the travertine. At that time they could fix the problems with the original install. Even less effort was taken to do a good and professional job. After Bruno finished his repairs I still noticed several uneven pavers. And when we got our first rain all the sand ran out from in-between the pavers. I called Mark and informed about this. The bottom line is that Mark says I should have not gone to Bruno to do the additional work. However, Mark knew about it and was informed about everything. It was Mark that chose not to come and look at the project. In order to have everything easier I thought I would have them add the extra tile and repair the pooling area of water in front of the door and seal the patio. The additional price was quoted at $1700.00. Ok, I thought then I will just be done and everything will be repaired. Bruno requested an additional $200.00 more for extra tile so I paid it. He never prepared the surface properly. Mark continues to say he just does not know what Bruno was doing. (To lay an adequate amount of crushed aggregate stone base, bedding sand and pavers, excavate the site well below the desired surface height of the project to allow for the base and sand layers. Simply calculate the thickness of the base, sand and paver layers to determine the depth. If the soil is clay, place a geotextile layer over the exposed soil and up the sides of the excavated area. This will provide additional stability for the base. Not all was done. I paid Mark an additional fee of $350.00 to oversee Bruno and bring some trim to fix the sloppy mess in an area. Their answer to everything was that the sealer will seal everything. I checked with the company they purchased the product from and they disagreed with them. It would have ruined my travertine and it would not have sealed the sand or grout at all.One expert in the field I had a expert in lippage removal give me their professional opinion. The rep from GM gave it in writing. They told me that they were unable to help me because the “Bottom line” is that the original underlayment is bad. They did not pack down the under-layment properly. So whether or not grout is good or bad it makes no difference. The entire tile needs to come up and the ground setup in the correct manner to handle the title. I would like the company to reimburse me the amount it will take to correct this mess.
Description of Work: I hired CLS in 5/09 to take up my old pavers and install new ones and to do some draining work and make the patio all one level. the company had expected and took 1/3 down to start the job I was committed with this company. Yet, they not only delayed the project they would say they were coming and not call or show up. So out of frustration I used my own energy and cleared everything off the patio. Then more delays, I then also went ahead and picked up and stacked the pavers I also had paid them to do this. Hoping they would then put their efforts on doing a good job for me. Yet, the end result was other jobs were put in front of my job and they never focused completely on my job. The 3 days total that Mark was here, he would leave to run errands and some of the errands were checking on other jobs. I would have appreciated a professional to give my job their complete attention and complete it properly. Mark was back and forth running errands interviewing for additional jobs he kept telling me all day that Bruno was on his way. So 7/8 hrs later Bruno shows up. Mark insisted Bruno finish the job. I wanted them to leave and come back the next day and do it. Yet, I believe they all just wanted their money and to be done with this job. I say this because the rest of the job was shoddy. Yet, after days of being stood up and all day being called and told that the tile workers were coming. It was a long day of waiting for them to do such a rushed sloppy job. They were rushed to leave and I felt obligated to pay them. I called Mark the next day and said there were problems the installer came that day and fixed one problem. I thought for sure he would notice the terrible job he and his workers did. There are tiles all over the place uneven.

Response from Controlled Landscape Services
Thank you for giving us a chance to respond to this most outlandish complaint from your member. We value the relationship that we have enjoyed for years by serving many of your members. It was a complete surprise to learn of this complaint even from the onset. When we completed work on the project. We left with a happy camper. Working within the parameters of 4500 characters or less including spaces, and without the ability to fully tell the rest of the story, using photos, media, and other documentation that could not be posted on Angie's List, we find ourselves in the position of how to fully tell this story. We have therefore created a multipage pdf document that completely explains, meticulously every single step that was taken from the very beginning of us quoting on the job, thru her paying us in full on May 29th, 3 days after beginning job and right on schedule! We want your members to be able to view the entire story, using all possible media, including multiple finished job site pictures, with a lengthy explanation, of what really happened to this person, and why she chose to use Angie's List to vent her complaints. This entire pdf document includes actual emails from beginning of quoting the job, showing that the customer initially asked us to delay starting on the project, for reasons of being able to get her money together. We had quoted and planned to do the patio the week before Memorial Day. Her email shows (seen below) that "you will be able to start week of 25 May. I know its Memorial week hopefully that will not be a problem. I am sorry I can not get all money before then." We happily accommodated her schedule and started work on Wednesday May 27, 2009 and completed the work on Friday May 29, 2009. On June 29th we learned by postal mail about this complaint, and began to prepare our response immediately. The next day, we received a second complaint from Angie's List from the same customer. We were still working on the first one. So now we had two complaints to address. Upon closer examination of the two different complaints, it was revealed that while they were similar in nature, they were completely rewritten, amended in many ways and in some cases, even the order of events were different. Even done on different days. I have to ask, how many times are the members allowed to rewrite a complaint, and why are there such harsh limits imposed for us to fully tell the story. You take the pictures, phone calls, emails, transcript, audio and actual evidence like dated checks and such out of a story. You don't have a story. We don't need to file a second response I hope, so we are providing this indepth documented chain of events as they unfolded, and who they included. The entire set of two complaints and our full response, including all emails we have received from Angie's List will be posted on our website. We welcome the opportunity for this story to be told in it's entirety. We have even included phone call transcripts of messages that we have stored from the client, date stamped showing where they were happy, long after we were finished with all work we were hired for. We will have the actual phone messages posted on the website as well, with accompanying transcripts. All messages left by her, showing that she was in fact happy. We invite you to visit and get all the facts. Including facts emerging that may follow our response here. Hopefully Angie's List will make an exception and allow the full story to be told as shown below. For the benefit of anyone reading this, please visit our site for all of this documentation, and more. We have a couple of dozen photo's that show the stages of the job, all the way to the finished product. We look forward to serving more of your members and always go the extra mile to ensure they have the best possible service experience and the best possible finished jobs. We have many, many examples of our craftsmanship on the site and encourage you to visit or call us for all of your landscaping needs! As the story evolves, we will be adding all documentation to the site to ensure that 100% of everything relating to this is fully available at all times to your members. We will be adding more stored messages, and the transcripts of those messages, since many (weeks after we were gone) actually don't make any sense. But please call us for your Landscaping Needs, we are the best. Mark Mattison-Owner

Their estimate was way too high, and did not include a sump pump. They quoted us $3,000 (without a sump pump) for the very same thing Visual Landscaping is going to do for $1,600 (with a sump pump).
Description of Work: We did not hire this company.
