It went horribly. Jay Culley does not know how to communicate well. He will avoid calls and emails, and treats the customer unprofessionally. We had three major structural nissues occur after we moved in ... the well pump kept tripping, the floors were not levelled and were installed too close to the walls and/or door frames causing pinch points, and the plumbers hooked one of the outside hose bibs up to the hot water line. Jay Culley was very rude and evasive when it came time to repair the floors. He never even apologized for the shoddy workmanship of his subcontractors, or for the inconvenience the repairs caused us. Customer satisfaction is the farthest thing from Jay Culley's agenda. The first site supervisor, Larry D. Sapp from Sopchoppy, was ineffective and lied to us on two separate occasions. He may have spent 20 minutes a day at the site. He was removed from the job, and a competent superisor, John Vatter replaced him. He was miles above and beyond what Larry Sapp was as far as a site supervisor goes. Most of the following occurred on Larry Sapp's "watch", not John Vatter's. I would recommend John Vatter. I would not recommend Larry D. Sapp to anyone for any reason, for anything. The painter, J & K Painting / Jerry Key insinuated he was going to charge me extra to paint my closets. His crew did a decent job outside, but did sloppy work inside. His helper spit tobacco on the floors and smeared caulk everywhere. His other helper missed painting lots of trim. Jerry said he would bring some extra wall paint, but never did. I would not recommend them. The cabinet crew, Jay Espy and John, did an awful job. They installed the kitchen cabinets off-center, could not install one of the bathroom vanities properly (we had to fix them), and miscalculated the area where the kitchen island went two different times. I would not recommend them. The tile crew, Capital City Tile did a good job, but his helper did sloppy work. He laid tiles upside down, installed the soap fixture in the shower crooked two times, stood on the brand new tub unit with his shoes scratching the surface , and chipped the unit with a trowel. I would recommend the foreman, but not the helper. The closet shelving, bathroom mirrors and custom shower frame work was done by Cushing Specialty Products. Jeff Cushing shorted us on the mirror height from what he quoted. His worker did a sloppy job on the shower frame. I would not recommend them. J B & B Land Development / Brad Savary did the driveway gravel. He did not return our call to quote finishing the driveway. I would not recommend them. George Morris of Quincy poured the foundation. He did not level the concrete, which subsequently cause problems with flooring. I would not recommend him. The heating and air crew out of Quincy, installed vents in the tray ceilings and did not center the exhaust vent over the tiolets. They left paper in in one of the vents. I would not recommend them. The well man installed the well and placed the well on a piece of tile instead of a concrete slab. I would not recommend him. The electrican, Alternative Electric, had to move lights, the doorbell, and had to move the septic tank electric panel because he put it in hte wrong spot. They left the tags in three of the smoke detectors. I would not recommend them for new construction. The plumbers, Quality Plumbing of Tallahassee, hooked one of the outside hose bibs to the hot water line. We found this out after we moved in. Subsequently, the sheetrocker and painter had to come back and patch the hole in the bedroom wall. They also installed a pipe beyond the slab instead of underneath it. They also cut into the electrical line running from the pump house, which caused the well pump to trip continuously for two months after we moved in, until the electrician dug up the line and finally figured out what was causing it to trip. I would not recommend them. The flooring crew, Steve Chance, installed laminate flooring. At first it looked good, but a week or so after we moved in, the boards started raising up and sinking in spots. They installed some of the flooring too close to the walls and door frames, which caused the boards to raise up. They also did not level the concrete floors before they laid the laminate. They had to pull up almost half of the boards after we had moved in. This was a major disruption. It took 3 days to do the repair. Then the shoe mold guy had to come, followed by the paint crew. We also could not use the stove while the repair was going on. The floor is still not level in some areas. They are very nice guys, but I would not recommend them. The roofer, Blackfoot Roofing, did a decent job, but after we moved in, we noticed a small area that had buckled. Clay Bozeman came out and looked at it. He said he needed to get some shingles and would be back. We have not seen him since. Again, I would not recommend Sterling Custom Homes in Carwfordville FL to anyone. They built the neighbors house, and they too are dissatisfied with them, and would not recommend them.
Description of Work: Sterling Custom Homes is now located at 3295 Crawfordville Highway in Crawfordville, FL. We contracted with them to build a custom 1600 sq ft home. It was one of the most miserable business experiences we ever experienced, thanks to Jay Culley and Larry D. Sapp. The home was supposed to be completed in 5 months. It took them 7 months, so we ended up with .5% higher interest rate because they did not get the job done on time. According to the company president, Jay Culley, and the company web site, they claim to be "customer focused, use the highest quality materials, best subcontractors, and never cut corners". This couldn't be farther from the truth. They are not customer focused, they are focused on squeezing every cent they can out of a job. They use the cheapest materials they can find, and the lowest paid subcontractors they can find. The majority of their subcontractors are not highy skilled craftsmen who take pride in their work. There is only one subcontractor that I would recommend to anyone without any stipulation attached. That was the sheetrock installer, Rick. He does very good work. If you let Sterling Homes build a house for you, plan to be at the construction site every day, or they will cut corners. Be prepared to miss work (several days) after the job is completed when they have to come back and repair stuff they did wrong the first time. They do not care if they cause the customer any inconvenience. They will be the cheapest bid, but I assure you, there is a very good reason. They build a cheaply constructed house. I would not recommend them to anyone.
