Here's a typical but particularly frustrating experience at Home Depot. On a relatively slow Sunday evening, I asked three different associates in the Garden department for help. I should mention that it was a hot summer evening, with only a fan overhead, and I was 6 months pregnant and already carrying a few items in my arms. Associate #1 told me she was a cashier and that we should talk to ---, the main gardener in the department. It took a while, but we flagged him down. He looked at us and said he was busy with someone else and would come back. There was a curt, gruff tone but I assumed I would just have to wait a minute or two, so I didn't care. I again explained to the associate that I had a simple question about tomato plants, that I had trouble growing them last year and wanted to talk with someone before expending more effort. She understood but did not have any help to offer. She said she would send him my way in the tomato department. I looked at my watch. 10 minutes went by. I watched as the and quot;gardenerand quot; helped another man slowly load stack loads of soil into a pickup truck, within 10 feet of the register. There were 2 idle, able bodied young associates nearby who could have easily performed this task. I walked over to them and asked again: is there anyone who can help me answer a simple question about tomato plants re: heat and growing space? Apparently, it was just the gardener by the truck, looking for a tip perhaps, and I would have to wait on him. Then and quot;the gardenerand quot; straight past me talking into a walkie talkie, didn't acknowledge me and say, and quot;I'll be back in a minuteand quot;. Nothing. Another 10 minutes went by. I waddled over to two other associates in the garden department, and could they help me? No, they don't know anything about gardening. But what's his name is the one to talk to, the and quot;gardenerand quot; who was nowhere in sight. I eventually made a modest purchase of a single small tomato plant and a couple of other items. Mind you, I am highly articulate, polite, non-abrasive, and was dressed in normal weekend casual clothing. There is no reason why this garden expert should have been so averse to dealing with a simple question from a pregnant woman waiting on him for nearly 30 minutes. In sum, this was the worst but not an isolated experience at Home Depot in which there are lots of people employed but they are either not trained to or uninterested in being helpful. For that, I'd go to Amazon.com where I could at least have online reviewers advising me. I think I'm done with this Home Depot branch, which clearly needs better leadership. Better go to Lowe's.
Description of Work: I went to the garden department and tried to get help on tomato plants.

Don't necessarily expect outdoor furniture to arrive in just a few days at this time of year (May) when everyone else is ordering the same thing.
Description of Work: We ordered some patio furniture and although it took a little longer than expected to deliver, it was worth the little wait. It is a very good quality for the money, the cushions are very thick and comfortable and the fabric looks very durable. I'm tempted to re-order the DR patio furniture as well.

ceramic tile, flooring contractor, home improvement stores

Overall, the tile and wood went on schedule (the second schedule) and the carpet guys stayed too late, broke stuff and scratched the new floor but got the job done. Returning the extra quarter round, thresholds, case of wood flooring and other items was very easy (bring the cc used for the purchase and receipts aren't necessary) once I figured out how to transport 16' pieces of quarter round in a small Honda Fit. Although I didn't feel as pampered as I might have with a smaller carpet retailer, I saved big bucks and got nice products at a great price. I had checked out all other flooring places in town. Since they all have different pricing variables, I even created a spreadsheet so I could more easily compare and quot;apples to apples.and quot;
Description of Work: I purchased ceramic tile for 4 rooms, engineered wood for 3 rooms & carpet for 3 rooms - the whole house. The salesman Ben was very helpful and knowledgable. I received a call before the installers arrived. Dan from the installation company was helpful, pleasant and professional. The installer Nathan and his assistant were great, arrived on time, were friendly, helpful, professional, and very knowledgeable. They did a great job with the ceramic tile set diagonally and with the hickory wood floors. Although it was mentioned when the order was placed, the original order would have left BOTH bathrooms unuseable for at least 2 days - one to lay the tile & one to grout the tile, but a new schedule was developed so one bathroom was always available. It would have been helpful if someone had advised me to empty/clean out the fridge or at least warn me about things getting tipped over when it was moved because not all lids on containers were leak-proof. I had a mess inside the fridge to clean up. The doors of the house stayed open while they were here (due to fumes & saw dust) and luckily it wasn't too cold. Nathan & his assistant put in quarter round everywhere when done and put some along the tubs at my request - nice! I wasn't happy with the carpet installers who had been brought in from S Florida because the usual carpet installer had a motorcycle accident. Although the carpet installer & assistant arrived timely, they spoke little English, were not prepared to move heavy furniture, broke glass inside a piece of furniture (didn't offer to pay for the replacement), stayed until 8:00 pm (instead of taking 2 days as expected - luckily I didn't have plans that night but), scratched the new wood floor and the carpet at the thresholds seems loose. There was an initial mix up with the tile order, which was both Home Depot's and my fault and HD shared in the expense of reordering the tile and getting it switched out for the wrong tile that was delivered. When I asked a different flooring person to get a sample of the tile for me to take home prior to purchasing it, he got the wrong tile and wrote the right name on it. The other tile wasn't much different and neither Ben nor I noticed. I ended up liking the other tile (the sample piece I took home) but the tile with the original name was ordered. The error wasn't discovered until tile installation day. Although Home Depot had enough of the correct tile, the installers had already gone to the next job by the time it was all figured out, so all flooring installation was postponed for 3 weeks. Although Ben had put a sign on the pallet of "my" tile, Home Depot let another contractor take it and when he brought it back, called to inform me that I'd be getting a credit - Ben straightened that out and saved my tile the second time.

I discussed with a salesman at Home Depot the purchase of a free standing range in their store to replace an existing drop-in oven. Nothing was mentioned about the wiring of the oven which should have been covered by the salesman in my opinion. He did say that I would need to purchase a 3 or 4 wired plug along with the range. He did not mention anything about checking to see if my range was hard wired or not. I was not aware of the difference in the wiring or that there would be the possibility of a problem with it. I had never seen the wiring under my drop-in range. Everything went smoothly, communication was excellent with the delivery, and they came right on time. When they took the drop-in oven out they saw that it was hard wired and they were not allowed to install the new range in my kitchen since there was no plug in place to plug the new range into and they left. So, I wound up with a range in the middle of my kitchen floor and an old broken range still in my house. This could have been avoided when I talked to the salesman earlier if he had asked me ahead of time to check if my range was hard wired or not since not all houses are equipped with a plug. A relative could have checked for me on what I had and I could have had an electrician out ahead of time to put in a plug in anticipation of the arrival of the new range. In short, everything went beautifully except the installation, and that problem could have been avoided had the salesman been professional and knowledgeable enough to question the wiring of an old drop-in range instead of assuming that I had a plug for the new range.
Description of Work: I purchased a free standing range from Home Depot and it was delivered right on time. The installation did not occur as planned.

At Home Depot I met with Francis, the designer, who walked me through the whole process. He was very professional and certainly knowledgeable, suggesting ideas, designing the cabinets to fit my wall and sharing information about the types and styles of cabinets Home Depot carried. He suggested I purchase my own knobs ahead of installation day, which I did. There was an in-home consultation and measurements were taken by the installer beforehand. The installer, Joe, talked about filling in the edges (all the cabinets were the same width but there was a little bare wall left over) and answered any questions I had. He, too, was very knowledgeable. Back at the store, Francis explained all the paperwork to me and we ordered the items on July 13, 2010. They were ready for pickup and inspection on 8/23/2010. I removed the old shelves and painted my wall before the cabinets came in. None of the cabinets or parts were damaged but there was a fine scratch which Joe had a marker for and no one can see it now. That morning, Joe very quickly and efficiently hung the items and did an excellent job! I am very, very satisfied with the results. I had a couple of touch-ups on the wall with my paint and it was done. There was very little mess and it was quickly cleaned up by the installer. He also put the knobs on for me. It has been two years now and they look just as good as the day they were put in!
Description of Work: I replaced three laundry room shelves,11' 9" long, with custom made 8 solid stock vertical wood cabinets, crown molding, filler and all hardware except the knobs, which I bought at Home Depot and had ready for installation.

In the beginning was fine. Getting it ordered was good. They instructed us on the correct sink to get. They sub contracted through another company. When they came to measure the template they were confused. They took the measurements for an above the counter top sink when it was clearly stated that it was for an under the sink. They were trying to make me take something I did not want. I had to speak to several people through the sub-contractor and Home Depot to get it straight. I still have not been compensated for it not being done on time. My sink has still not been installed.

Overall I was not satisfied with manager's attitude. The experience should never have taken place or taken so long to complete. It was not that difficult a project. The complete scenario is described above.
Description of Work: I contracted to have verical blinds put on five windows in my townhouse. Home Depot had their installer come to my house to measure windows. He did this. Home Depot advised that blinds could be cut to fit measurements and I was to pick them up at store when they were ready to save me espense installer would charge me to pick them up for me. I agreed. Home Deport called me and advised blinds ready to be picked up and i made arrangements to pick them up on a certain date. When I arrived I was informed by Customer Service that blinds were not available. I was referred to a manager who insisted it was not Home Depot's fault blinds were not there. Advised her that sales person herself had called me to say they were available. The mager's attitude was poor and she was rude. I amde arrangements for installer to pick up blinds when they were finally available and jhe would bring to my home and install at no pickup charge to me. This he did. While installing we noticed that header did not fit brackets supplied and blinds were not cut evenly. The next day I returned to Home Depot and was referred to same manager I had spoken to previously. Her attitude was no better this time. Still insisted not Home Depot's fault and that it was installers fault. I advisd her that since Home Depot employee cut the blinds and installer was an independent contractor for Home Depot it was not his fault. Installer returned a day or two later and finally installed correct length verical blinds as well as a new header. It was then he told me manager had advised him that I indicated to her that the whole problem was his fault and he was to blame. Told him that was not the case and that I never said he was responsible. I knew who was responsible and told manger who was. Home Depot employee did not cut length of blinds correctly. The installer corrected header problem with new braackets and installed newly cut vertical blinds. What should have taken one day to complete took at least three and inolve my making more than one trip to store to get it done right. Salesperson and Customer Service personnel as well as installer were courteous. Manager I spoke to was not.
