Lessons we learned from working with Michael Darley at Sawgrass Pools of Central Florida (but this applies to any contractor): -Check references - not ones given to you or ones you've heard about, but the last several that were worked for and current projects. We did not request this because we new of pools built by a company that he bought. -Visit marioncountyfl.org and under departments go to building safety, then permit and inspection info. Look at their permit history and see how long it takes the contractor to complete projects. We were told 3 months and it took 15 months from initial payment and signing of the contract. This is also where you will find current and past projects to check their list. -Always have a finishing date on a contract. -Have a substantial final draw that is due upon final inspection and all "punch list items" being completed. -Have a lawyer review your contract before signing to make sure you are protected. -Search their license number online to find out any other companies they qualify with their license. Mike Darley qualifies three companies with his license: A Quality Pool Service of Central Florida, Rick Lorick Construction and Sawgrass Pools of Central Florida. The end result is that we have a completed pool. It holds water. The equipment is quality equipment. After taking him in front of the licensing board, the list of problems were corrected and we received a refund to cover refinishing of the deck that was done improperly and damaged by acid. The process was extremely stressful and we learned a lot. I hope he improves his business practices and timeliness.
