He wanted to be here at 8:30, so I had to be up at 8:30! | |He also installed a ceiling fan and a dog door. The dog door is too low and one of my dogs refuses to go through it. I looked at the instructions, it clearly showed that the door should be higher. The only thing I can do is remove the door and install a larger one because now the hole is cut. The door I will throw out cost me $120, in addition to which, he removed a cat door from the spot, and took it upon himself to throw that out! I had promised that door to a friend with a cat. | |Lastly, he installed a ceiling fan. He seemed to think I am an idiot and told me some ridiculous story about the ceiling perhaps not being wired correctly for the fan as all fans require different wiring. Over the years I have had dozens of fans installed in different houses and of course, fans do not require different wiring. He seemed to miss how knowledgeable I am, and spoke to me as if I am an idiot with an exasperated tone and a lot of annoyed sighing. My late husband was an Architect and spent his career as a Construction Manager. In 35 years of being married and too, renovating homes, you can be sure I learned plenty and I really didn't appreciate being treated as if I am stupid. | |All in all, this was a very expensive nightmare.

My opinion of course, but for me, it was one of the worst tile jobs I'd ever seen. Grout was uneven as were many tiles. Grout was all over not just the tiles themselves, but on the walls, appliances and cabinets. I spent days cleaning up the mess and getting rid of the grout haze that was left. Next time, I'll just have to go with my gut feel and pay more.

Jack painted the interior trim in our house, plus a couple of rooms, walls and ceilings. He arrives on time and works as long as there are light and supplies. I find him to be very neat, and he did the trim in the whole house with minimal disruption of my routine, moving and covering furniture as he went, and putting it back and cleaning up after himself when he was done. He painted the exterior of our house a few months ago, and again got the job done very quickly and neatly, and for about 2/3 the price of our other estimates. He also fixed the stucco on the front of our house and installed new screens on our porch. A true jack of all trades.

We called Jack on a Sunday evening, before the delivery of our new refrigerator the next morning, to ask him if it was possible to widen the opening of our space in the kitchen. After sending him a picture of the area in question, he called with his suggestions and told us he could do the work. We were impressed with his quick response. He came within two days and completed the work the same day. He was pleasant and obviously knew what he was doing. The final result was acceptable to us....not perfect...but he was honest in his assessment of the options we had and we agreed with his suggestion. The work he did was exactly what we asked of him.
Description of Work: We chose to replace a built-in refrigerator with a cabinet-size one that was approximately .5 inch too wide for the opening. Jack widened the opening by trimming one side.

Description of Work: I hired Jack to come over and build a wall to seperate two rooms. Build it and paint it. He showed up on time and got right to work. There was a discrepency on the size of the door, but I went ahead and went with the larger door as Jack recommended. It worked out fine. I did want the wall to be a little wider than what he built but that was my fault for not realizing the actual size of the beams that Jack suggested we use. So, over all, Jack did exactallly what he quoted me he was going to do. I just wish I would have hired someone that would have taken a bit more time to explain my options. I wanted the wall to be soundproff, as it was coming off the dining room and kitchen area, where there is a lot of noise and I was having a studio appartment made out of the new room therefore wanted the wall to be much thicker. But Jack did exactly what he said he would do, so for that I gave him and over all B for the job. The only reason for not recieving an A was because he was slight messy and did not clean up after himself the way I expected him to, but I cleaned up and all is well. The painting came out great and the wall is certainly serving its purpose. I would rehire Jack again, but would just be a little more specific of my needs. Thanks Jack!!

I contacted Jack on a Wednesday and he was able to get the materials and install the fence on that Saturday. He completed the job on the same day he started the installation. His price was reasonable for this area.
Description of Work: Jack built and installed a locking 4 foot wide wood gate in my backyard. He was prompt and professional in is manner and he did a top notch quality job. He used high quality treated wood and fixtures. I will use Jack again for future handy-man jobs.

Everything was great, Jack was very prompt and responded quickly to my initial contact email. We scheduled an appointment to meet at the house and go over the repairs and he was on time (even a bit early). He looked at everything and was able to fix everything in a timely fashion. Overall a very positive experience.

I asked Jack for an estimate to install tile in a new master bath and laundry room. Apparently the idea that I would ask Jack to provide an estimate for this work based on a set of drawings, not having yet started the job, was laughable. God knows how homebuilders manage to build millions of houses a year based on plans only. When it comes down to it, communication and attitude are what most affect your relationship with subcontractors, and Jack's attitude was lousy.

Response from JACK CARLIN
This was an old house under total renovation with nothing but the stud walls standing. 1. I never give estimates for tile work when I can't see what it is I am putting the tile on for one thing. People's ideas for the finished project frequently change from what they conceive of on blueprints. I told him it was not my policy to give estimates when I couldn't see in front of me what I was working with and that I would come back an give him an estimate when the areas were actually built. He didn't like that. Maybe some people would be foolish enough to give a firm estimate on general ideas but I am not one of them. 2. He could also not tell me what kind or size of tile he had planned to use in these unbuilt areas. The kind and size of tile makes all the difference in the world to the amount of time, effort and how it is even attached in any tile job. I also told him he would have to decide what kinds of tile would be used in the areas before I could give him an estimate. He didn't like that either. 3. Homebuilders do not get firm prices from tile setters for installing tile in areas of new houses until the walls are up and they have decided what kind and size of tile they are using. Homebuilders estimate a range of what it could cost and then plan that into the overall cost of the new home but they do not get firm prices until they are ready to install. 4. He freely told me this was the first time he had done anything like this. His expectations of what could be accomplished from just some blueprints without anything being built was unrealistic plus the fact that he didn't know what kind and size of tile was to be used.

All the jobs Jack has done for me have gone very well. Jack always does excellent work at a fair price. He is totally reliable, does what he says he is going to do and when he says he is going to do it. Jack always cleans up after the job and leaves the job site and your house clean and tidy. As you can tell, I highly recommend him, he is quite a find in this day and age.
Description of Work: Jack has done work for me since before Katrina. He has cleaned and painted the exterior of my house, installed soffit vents, put down ceramic tile on our front porch, painted interior trim, put down a wooden floor, installed all the trim and painted the interior of an attic extension we finished earlier this year. Jack built a new back gate for me and painted several rooms in the apartment I lease out. He put some UV reflective coating sheets on some windows that get a lot of sun light, and he placed some concrete for me in my workshop as well. Jack has a lot of skills. He can do most anything

Jack is a good guy to work with. He works alone for the most part so the job takes a long time. Finish coat was good, but prep work was sometimes weak. Prep work (removing loose paint, sanding, priming, etc.) was poor in several areas, and the finish coat was applied before I could inspect. Consequently I have a $16,000 paint job that is already flaking in some areas, just months after completion. Because of extensive business travel I was not able to supervise the job very closely. On occasion when I was able to say something, Jack was resistant and grudging in taking corrective measures. To be fair, Jack is a nice enough guy, there were no questions about his honesty and he worked hard on the job from start to finish. I had no qualms about leaving him alone at the house, and wouldn't have any worries today. He worked without making a mess, cleaned up after himself and charged exactly what he said he would. My ONLY complaint is the quality of the prep work and how resistant he was on those few occasions when I was able to catch it. For $16,000 my house shouldn't be flaking already, less than 1 year after completion.

I found Jack off a pre-Katrina flyer stuck to our bulletin board. Fortunately he was still here and available to do some of the small jobs around our house, though I know he can do big ones also. He calls back, shows up when he says he will, and does quality work at a fair price. A rare find!
Description of Work: Jack has performed several jobs for us. He has done the following range of things: carpentry, repair jobs, painting, and part of a remodel for our kitchen wall (which included installation of a new oven).
