The only reason the overall grade is not an F is because the floor tile is beautiful. My score is based on the overall project. Custom Home Design started off strong, but by the end of the project, things soured significantly. First and foremost, Barbara Cullinane has difficultly maintaining client/service provider boundaries. She wanted to be my friend, I only wanted my house remodeled. On one occasion, she attempted to task me to do work that was clearly what she was being paid to do. I had to explain to Barbara that the tasking was inappropriate and her job to do, not mine. Barbara, later, by mutual agreement, was removed from the house renovation project. At this juncture, Barbara had to be reminded to check on floor and bathroom tile delivery dates. It was a priority when she was on the job, but once off the job...it was an after thought. Additionally, Barbara ordered too much floor and bathroom tile. I have approximately $2000 in excess tile sitting in my garage. You will need to review and challenge her flooring estimates. Also, check your bathroom tile, I had to refuse several boxes of bathroom tile since they were 80% defective.
Description of Work: Custom Home Design, Barbara Cullinane, provided the floor and bath room tile for my home. Barbara was initially contracted/scheduled to install the floor tile, but I could not commit her to a firm date. She was well aware that I had a household good shipment that required delivery by 1 August. It was later mutually agreed upon that I would hire someone else to install the floor tile.

I was originally bidding on the flooring for the home in question. When I started this process. the owner was still in Italy. I was told what she wanted for tile and then when she arrived to the states she said that is not what she wanted. She was very specific in what she did want. So I started over again looking all over the state of Florida. My brother, who lives in south Fl. is also in the flooring business so I asked him to look down there for me. He went to 9 different locations before he found what ended up being the Perfect tile. So we were good to go on that. Later (removed member name) called me very frustrated with previous work done there and was having a hard time lining up a G.C. to do the renovation. I came up with the idea to hire me and a colleague who was also a residential contractor to perform work needed. We put in our bid and saved the client thousands of dollars. As in any business, there do come problems. One of which was the floor tile in south Fl. could not be delivered by common carrier, so I as the owner had to find a way to get it here. So I rented a 24 ft. truck, drove down to south Fl. in the pouring rain/lightning to get it. Upon arrival I was told the pallet jack I had would not be able to offload this tile, so I needed a new one to offload the tile in the a. m. and get the truck rental back. I was very upset to say the least. I was in bumper to bumper traffic in a 24 ft. truck with 12,000 lbs. of tile. The big "task" I asked of (removed member name) was to look up Harbor freight in Melbourne and see if they have a pallet jack I can pick up on the way back into town. She was Horrified that I would ask her this. This was not her responsibility as she stated, but I gotta tell ya, if I had asked any one of my other clients to do this, I am sure they would have and just said you just be safe. Not (removed member name). She stated that I wanted to be her friend. Well, truth be told, all my clients become my friends. I go out of my way to make them happy and help them get thru the process with as little stress as possible. (removed member name) was very stressed from the beginning because of bad misfortune so I tried to ease her stress. Her house was gutted with not a stick of furniture. She had samples and floor plans and such, all sitting on the floor every day. So I suggested I bring a glass top and rattan table and chairs I had in my garage so she and her son would have something to sit on. She redid the covers and it worked out great! Now this was not done as a contractor, this is what a friend would do to help some one out. So she utilized this for 3 months with never even a thank you and didn't have a problem with me acting as a friend then. Her little dog was running free and I was afraid she would get hit so I gave her my dogs lawn run so she would stay safe. Again, not as a contractor responsibilities but as a friend looking out for her dog. No problem there. Then she had no juice left in her cell phone...so I give her one of mine. Again, no problem there. And I ask her to make a phone call while I am driving with 12,000 lbs. of tile in the pouring rain. Yes, I did find this incredulous. It made me realize what kind of a person I was dealing with here. The bath tile figures were given to me by the contractor doing the work, so if there was a problem it is on him. Flooring is always figured with a waste factor and you never know how close it will be but you never want to run out of a special order tile. plus, you will never find the tile again if you have any repair problems so you should always have extra. Every contractor that bid on the job had the same figures. The job was never delayed and it is certainly not true that I could not give a firm date, I kept telling her we had to be the last ones in and to keep me posted as to when the other contractor was finishing up. I had scheduled my brother to do the installation because he was kind enough to track the tile down for her to begin with. She, in turn, gave it to the other contractor, taking $4500.00 out of my brothers mouth. Now that's a real "thank you" for finding me this beautiful tile. I could go on and on but I won't. I showed this review to a couple of my clients to get their reaction. Some I won't put in print, but one hit the nail on the head. They said " Barbara, no matter how hard you try you will never be able to make everyone happy. It is impossible, especially with people like this. So look at it the other way....look at all the people you HAVE made happy." And they are right. .I choose to look at the the other 99.9999% people that are happy with me and my services. All of which I call "friend.". I like it that way. I am done with this client, job is done and time to move on. I suggest any consumer looking at this to call me direct and I will supply many, many happy clients. Like they say 'You can't win em all". but I sure as heck try hard to. Thank you for your time and consideration in my company.
