Since 1982 our goal has been to create beautiful outdoor environments for our customers that increase their personal enjoyment and property value.
For more than 25 years, Tommy Todd Landscape & Design has been transforming the landscapes of the greater Tampa Bay area. Founded in 1982 by Tommy Todd, the company initially focused on grass plug lawn conversions, lawn and ornamental pest control and residential landscape projects.
We expanded into grass plug marketing, tree farming and retail lawn and garden centers before settling into our niche as Design/ Build Landscape and Hardscape Contractors.
Although we have done many renowned commercial landscape projects like World Woods Golf Course, Black Diamond Golf Course, Raymond James Financial, Stetson Law School, Eckerd College and many others, our focus and 90% of our business has come from homeowners just like you.

Services we offer
Our company is exclusively design + build. This means we guide you from the beginning of the planning/design phase and we install your project through the buildout phase. The design can include hardscapes, patios, pergolas, outdoor kitchens, fireplaces, irrigation and of course plants!
Services we don't offer
We do not provide free estimates. We specialize in design/build and charge a nominal fee for our design plans after our free consultation.
How do companies survive with the level of attitude of Tommy Todd Landscape?? I could of sworn Tommy Todd is listed as a full landscape services company. I went to them with a complete set of landscape, hardscape and sprinkler plans. The plant list had dozens of adult palms, over 200 plants, and 3700' of hardscape. You would think they'd be excited to be offered a major project such as the one this is? How wrong I was. Upon entering their office, the attitude I received was unbelievable. Forget a welcoming hello. I was hit with a feeling of what are you doing here. The first person I met immediately said we don't work like this. After I presented the complete package, I was told "we only do jobs that we control everything". I said great! That's just what I was looking for. She said she'd ask the owner when he got back if he's interested in my job. Shortly after I left I called back to ask if they'd like me to email a site plan or any other information that would help in the quoting process. This time however, a different person answered the call. Not the infamous Tommy Todd, but his main designer/manager. On my children I was told within 30 seconds that chances are they wouldn't be interested in my job!!!I was immediately scolded with how Tommy Todd only does the biggest of jobs that they control from the ground up. That they and they only design the plan. Mine was useless to them. Did I know how busy they are and how long it would take IF they were even willing to consider my job??? I then found myself apologizing for being so efficient with having a full set of plans and began selling them, instead of the other way around. I was trying to convince them of not realizing just how good this job could be. How big it was that they seemed to want to pass up. I was selling my job to the people who are supposed to be selling it to me. I couldn't believe I fell into the insanity. I've been in business for myself my entire life. I kill myself with thanks and gratitude for any customer that is willing to consider offering me his/her business. No matter how big or small. What is clear, is Tommy Todd felt it couldn't charge me the obvious ridiculous prices they charge the fools that fall for all the banter and self ingratiation they gave to me. So they bailed right off the rip instead of actually trying to work for a great customer. Go some where else. Where the company wants and appreciates your business.

Response from TOMMY TODD LANDSCAPE & DESIGN
Our company has been in business since 1982 and it has evolved to a family owned Design/Build Landscape and Hardscape Constuction business. Over 18 years ago after suffering the tragic death of my oldest son we changed our business model with Kyle’s younger brother leading the way. We stopped bidding jobs and other people’s plans to focus on our core Design/Build process. We had over 25 customers that paid a deposit for our exceptional design service when this person approached us with her plans. She was politely told that we don’t bid on plans when we have that many customers who have waited patiently for our services. Plus with a new home we couldn’t meet her timeline with our backlog of work. We are entitled to run our business that we we choose and not required to alter our model just because a customer thinks they are more important than our existing clientele. This is the prevailing attitude of people that we in this country can still choose not to work with. We have many wonderful customers that spend $2000 to over$100,000 and they are our priority to service not someone coming in wanting immediate attention and thinking their project is more important. Plain and simple we design it, build it and in certain areas maintain our projects. Our business is created through referrals from our happy clients that are a pleasure to work with and I will not apologize for that! Tommy Todd

I really struggled with Tommy Todd’s team for managing my overall project. Communication was lacking, they were unwilling to accept responsibility and/or even apologize for mistakes that were made and details that were over looked. Their inability to provide true project management as promised resulting in me feeling very taken advantage of. A portion of the project was not completed (a fire pit) as discussed and no option to remedy the concern was entertained. They tried to collect final payment multiple times before the work was done or a walk through occurred and they gave me a hard time when I challenged that. During the project, I was never contacted by my so called project manager. I never saw him visit the work site (my backyard) and he made no attempt to provide updates as the work occurred. Water was left running for hours more than once causing an increased water bill for me. I mentioned it and was told the concern would be addressed and it continued to happen. Items were drawn into the plan but not articulated clearly on the contract resulting in additional cost to me. This seemed intentional. After the project, trash was left on site and I was never presented a finished/polished project. A cable wire became loose during the project and instead of fixing it; it was left draped across the back of the house, buried and covered with landscaping mulch. It looked awful, eventually they fixed that but not without extended effort and energy on my part. I was told my yard would be leveled but instead I now have big truck tire ruts, large divots, dips and depressions all over making it difficult to mow the yard. When I shared my final project concerns with Tommy Todd, he got frustrated as he realized his employee mislead me creating a difficult situation and walked away from me instead of finding resolution. I asked about weed control when initially discussing the project and was assured the project would be manageable. During the project I again asked about weeds as they were already getting out of control. I was told that Tommy Todd Landscaping does not believe in using weed block or sealing between the stone pavers in the patio project. I was not aware of this and now pick weeds every day to manage a decent look for the space. It would have been easier if I laid my own mulch from the beginning. This is part of the project that I now have to redue myself. When spending 75K on a project, I do not think my expectations are too high to have things done correctly. The original verbal estimate from Tommy for my project was around 55K. It is hard to understating how I ended up paying 20K more and do not have all I asked for. Overall I felt taken advantage of and am not satisfied. The work did not meet the value for what was paid.
Description of Work: Full backyard project. Hardscape Patio, In-ground Pool, Bird Cage/Lanai, Landscaping with Palms and other Native Plants, Fire-pit (never completed), Hammock Stands, Bat House Installation.

Tommy Todd is a wonderful, kind man. He has been so helpful to me as I try to find service providers in a new town. All of his recommendations have been outstanding. Patty in the office is lovely and so helpful. The project manager Justin came up with a beautiful design and incorporated my request for lots of plant color. His team that did the removal of the old and installation of the new watering system and plants were great to have at the house. They were extremely hardworking, polite and arrived each day as scheduled. The job was completed on the date promised and we are so happy with the results. I highly recommend Tommy Todd Landscape and Design.

BEWARE!!! I called Tommy Todd to set up a time that someone could come out to give an estimate for a total backyard makeover. I took time off work to be home by the designated appointment time and he arrived almost 45 minutes late. When he did arrive I met him on the sidewalk and he made an uncalled for, rude comment about the "spaghetti trail" he had to maneuver to get to the front door (we have some trimmed, manicured hedges that are next to the sidewalk and by no means intrusive of the sidewalk). The main project that I called about was the back yard but I showed him a small flower bed in the front yard and said that we wanted some small, colorful plants added there. He then asks me about our irrigation system...I tell him that we do not have one, that I can water the small flower bed. so there is no need for an irrigation system. He rudely looks at me and says "you are wrong...you need an irrigation system for this and the front yard" (the front yard is not even part of the project). I politely disagreed again in regards to the irrigation system and he says that he will not do the project without us having him put in an irrigation system. He did not even make it to the backyard (where the main project is). We have set aside 15-20 thousand for the backyard but he was so wrapped up with the small flower bed in the front yard and trying to oversale an irrigation system that he apparently forgot why he was there. He kept talking over me and was focused on trying to make me feel like an idiot for not wanting to install an (unnecessary) irrigation system. I asked him to leave my property because I refuse to do business with and hand someone $20,000 who does not respect the client and tries to oversale an unwanted product.

I signed a contract that listed specifics (1600 s feet of sod, etc.) for $5,900 with taxes according to the contract included. The company didn't call or show up the day they previously had booked with me for landscaping. I had changed my schedule that week to be home the two days they said that they would come. After complaining, they came the next day which also meant that I couldn't be at the house the second day of their work ( I wanted to be there both days to direct them and see their progress). The original bill didn't include two trees that I had requested that the owner install and I paid additionally for them ( not a problem- it was $53.00). When I got another statement from them saying I owed $6,300 and that only 1200 ft of sod had been installed. I asked them to use the additional sod that I had been promised on the contract in another area of my yard. I was then told that the contract I signed was only an "estimate" and that it didn't mean I would be receiving everything on it nor at that price. I stupidly paid the bill and then started asking them to replace two plants that were not doing well in the yard. They have a 90 guarantee for all plants. I emailed them about the plants four times and sent pictures. I called them on the phone and was told that someone would be out to replace them. This went on for more than a month with no one showing up. I then asked about my sod again and was told that they would replace the area I wanted for an additional $600.00 ( it was a fairly small area around my mailbox). Had I been there the second day of their work I would have made sure that this area was addressed but the contract stated that they would determine what areas of the yard required sod and what areas were damaged. I was so disgusted at this point that I told them not to worry about replacing any plants and that I would take care of it myself. I would caution anyone working with them to have detailed conversations about a time line (which they may ignore anyway) and specifics on the costs and work that they were going to do and if additional costs could be assessed without being listed in the contract.

Unfortunately [member name removed] did not present the correct information that we have documented with our proposals and invoices. The original contract was for landscaping as per the plan, transplanting a crape myrtle, trimming up her Paurotis Palm clump and called for 1600 sg ft of sod to be installed to the right of her driveway for $5941.07. Irrigation retro was to be billed at time and materials which was $203.00. She added (1) 30 gallon Weeping Yaupon Holly, (1) 7gallon Australian Tree Fern and (8) additional 1 gallon Leriopi while subtracting 1 pallet of sod (400sg ft) which gave her a new total of $6000.00 for landscape and sod plus $203 for irrigation for a grand total of $6203.00 Note she did not pay for the extra pallet of sod and the trees and plants cost her an addional $58.93 over her origianl contract.. On Moday December the 8th Barbara with my office sent her an email requesting final payment on the balance of the job and referenced the invoices that were due upon receipt and sent to her on November 28. She asked for us to do addional work as recommened by her lawn spray company to remove and replace addiotional sod on the left side of her driveway (not in our original scope of work). She also asked us to move a few plants that did not allow her gate to open fully which my manager James did for her. She later said that 2 of the Bulbine were not looking good and James repalced them and noted 2 more looked weak and he would have changed them as well if he had them with him. None of these plants were dead and have grown out in our nursery but we want our new jobs to look their best. When James looked at the addional sod work with sod cutter rental, dump fees, labor and the price of the grass it was obviously more than we would have charged if this job was done when we were doing the original work. She did not like the $600 price to do the extra sod work which included all of the elements I described above. We offered last week to replace the other 2 plants and she said no because she wanted to write this inaccurate and malicious report. Last of all her job was sceduled for a specific week when she returned from a trip and we had not completed the project from the previous week and were going to start the next day. We usually call clients a day ahead if we are delayed and it was our fault for not doing so. However we are an outside construction business that is affected by weather and occasionally other contractors schedules and 99% of our clients are very polite and understanding and extremly gracious with our staff and their compliments on the services we provide. Since you folks grade our services based on hearsay, inaccurate information I think it is only fair in our rebuttal that we grade them as a client. In this case it would be an F. This is my last respose to these ridiculous reviews. We only do drainage projects when they are a part of our landscape or hardscape design/build projects. The plan was never done. I went to see them because their designer wasn't understanding things like, "don't put a bunch of trees in front of the drive-thru fence gate", etc. He had a drawing on the computer, but used plants we specifically stated we didn't want, we asked for it to be minimal, neat and orderly and he was working it up to be extremely busy. Sitting down with them, we discussed the plants and I left, hoping things would improve. That was the last contact, because we never received anything from them again, including return phone calls. Chalk up $500 to a lesson learned.

I met [member name removed] on three occasions to consult, to review the design and to go over her revision. She wanted to make further changes and came into our office and spent at least 2 hours with our designer to make additional changes and this was done as a courtesy because we only offer one region with no charge. After she left Warren spent another 4 hours redoing her plan and emailed her that it was completed with no response. She had to.d him before leaving our office that she would come back and pick up the revised plans which she never did. I also sent other contractors out for a screen enclosure and she ran him around as well. This is why I stopped advertising with Angie' because of the open forum for dishonest people like [member name removed]. We have been in business for 31 successful years and my son will take it for another 30+ and we work very hard to please our clients and exceed their expectations. It really bothers us when you have such a small % less than 1 that make the time to discredit a a hard working family business. I had after my first meeting declined to do a plan for [member name removed] as I was not comfortable with her intentions but she asked me to reconsider. I forgot there was two meetings prior to our 1st design review that makes four meetings. Tommy Todd

We had to replace a large oak in our front yard and Todd provided new designs from our concept and executed the plans including extending a driveway, new plants and trees. I am very surprised at [member name removed] comments and grading of our service. We took extra steps to give them a larger space for a BB ball court that required remobilizing our crew with additional work at no extra charge . I had nothing but pleasant conversations with [member name removed] and I did not receive any comments about lack of followthrough or unfinished requests. I do have a designer that may have been the disconnect because he was very busy this spring and a bit overwhelmed. However I handled the sale and scheduling of the project and did I not receive any feedback. Very Surprised! Tommy Todd

Today we learned that a palm tree in the back yard needs to come out before the pool plumbing can be installed. Although we have not awarded him the business yet, he responded to my husband's call in 15 minutes, and is contacting his arborist personally to have the tree removed. That IS CUSTOMER SERVICE!
Description of Work: We are in the early stages of getting a landscape project completed at my daughter's home. Tommy Todd Landscape company is one of three companies that we will speak with this week. I was reluctant to keep the appointment once I saw a couple of the reviews on Angie's List. . What a mistake that would have been! We met with Mr. Todd yesterday. After an exchange of pleasantries, i asked him directly about the two unfavorable comments. I was satisfied with his response. I've been in retail and customer service all my life and although I try to practice "the customer is always right", sometimes they are not. Mr. Todd was extremely knowledgable about varieties of plantings, irrigation, discussed the multiple choices we have, and provided information on the hard scape alternatives we have for our driveway and the pool that is under construction. Although this is the holiday season, he has committed to a complete CAD designed proposal for us by January 7th., complete with planting varieties and specifications, and pricing.

Sod and timer were fine, as was the new irrigation section. Included in the bid was to fix and adjust all other sections of my yard. This was not done very well. Overall they were rushed and not to concerned with service.

We ended up using another contractor for this work for a few reasons - TT's vision was wonderful and his deign looked great but it was priced like a BMW and we were looking to buy a Toyota. His bid was, far and away, the highest of all 4 that we received for similar work. While it looked superb, in this economy we didn't have the budget. Also, after having him stop out to my parents home...we felt a bit "hustled" to make a decision and use his services; a bit too "salesey" for our taste.

The person I spoke with on the phone asked me if I was getting estimates from other lawn companies. When I told him yes (isn't that what Angie's List recommends) he told me that they would not come out as most other companies bid lower and his company doesn't get the job after that. Needless to say I was shocked at that response. I then told him I got their information, as well as the other companies, off of Angie's List and that I was looking for "quality" not "cheap". With that being said his attitude changed and said that someone would be out to look at the property and then call me. No one, that I know of, came out and no one called me. Needless to say I would not recommend this company. I n regards to the Company response I have changed my original "Overall Experience" from an F to a C as I feel there may have been a communication problem between myself and Tommy Todd. I cannot in good faith retract my statement because that is what I was told when I called. If it had been explained to me the same way as in their Provider Response I would not have filed a report at all.

Sod is a commodity that we only install as part of our landscape design/build business. There are companies that specialize in sod installation and even have their own sod farms making it impossible for us to compete in sod only installations. We try to avid sod in our design whenever possible because of it's extreme demand on our limited water supply. We should not be graded on something that is only a small part of what we offer the public and we do not do sod only installations because they are unprofitable. I was unaware that in America I have to offer a service that I choose not to and I get graded by down by people like this. When we do small sod installations at a break even for our landscape customers that is my right and my choosing as a free American business owner. Tommy Todd

It went great!!! Thank You Mr Todd.
Description of Work: I apologize that I am submitting this report a year after the landscape was completed for my home. My husband and I were very pleased with the work done. We got estimates from several local landscapers and none had very good ideas and prices on how to spruce up our yard until we met Mr Todd himself. Most landscapers don't want to do small jobs but this company had no problem helping us out. We did a yard clean-up and removed some concrete borders from our front yard and plants that looked terrible in our back yard. Mr Todd suggested some new plants including Crotons and Liriope for our front yard, which looked fantastic, especially a year later. I cannot understand how this company got " F's from others as they are very professional and do a wonderful job!

We met Mr Todd and his son at St. Pete home show, talked to them about what we wanted to start on but needed direction, a solid plan. Mr. Todd told me how much a landscape plan was, I said no problem and he introduced us to his father and I thought we conveyed that we really were serious about starting so I gave them our card with contact info as well as provided name and phone on their form. I asked them to call as soon as they could come out. Other vendors that we had asked to call us from that home show ALL phoned. We are currently spending $65,000-70,000 and I have researched and contracted with individual companies. We were hoping Mr. Todd would have contacted us to design these renovations and implement the changes but we did not get a call back.

We are sorry we missed the opportunity but we had over 200 inquires at the home show and we told most people to call our office if their needs are urgent. Every client seeking our services right away called or office because business is a two way street when it comes to communication. Our sales assistant, Karen, was diagnosed with pneumonia the following week and missed over 3 weeks of work. I am the only sales person and with that many leads it is impossible to call every person back and that is why we give them our business card with our personal cell phone number and email address. If we did not respond after a follow up call from the client I could understand this report. Our only negative reports from Angie's list customers comes from clients who did not get a timely response. Like most companies in this horrible business climate when have been forced to cut back personnel to stay in business and we do our best to satisfy all of our customers needs. Nearly all of our customers understand this and that is why we have been in business for 29 years this month and the customers that work with us have a fabulous experience. Our design and installation quality exceeds anything in the Tampa Bay area for our scope of work. I am sorry these folks had to compromise their project because they felt they were more important than the other 200 people that were interested in our services that had no trouble calling us back for a consultation. I am beginning to wonder if the Angie's List customer is one that I want to spend our advertising dollars to attract. Thomas N Todd President

Overall, the yard looks very nice but have had to fix irrigation system a couple of times since installation. The work was done professionally. When we got our backyard landscaped later on by a different company realized that their prices was quite a bit higher for comparable work but had no complaints at the time they did the work. Mainly my complaint about Tommy Todd is their lack of communication with the customer - after the initial agreement for the work it took weeks to have the work done which wasn't a problem, just would have liked that they had contacted me and kept me in the loop about the schedule.
Description of Work: Landscaped front yard, replaced sod and re-did irrigation system for our front yard.

They were very responsive in giving me the quote. They came over and explained everything and left all the stuff. They never called me again. I kind of felt like they took my money for the plan and said see ya. They were very nice and the plan was high quality. It was probably more grandiose that I wanted and probably more expensive than what I had originally thought they would do. I couldn't judge what their landscape work would be like. I ended up going with another company. They got the quote to me very quickly but they never followed up. Their quote was pretty high. They did hardscape and landscape and I decided to do it in different pieces so I would have more control over it.
Description of Work: I got a quote from Tommy Todd Landscape & Design for a patio.

They were very business like and did pretty much what they said they would do. We had a problem and it took several months to resolve it but eventually they fixed the problem.

The workers were tireless working in July from 0700 until 1700. Eddie the foreman was accessible to us by phone 98% of the time and very courteous and respectful. It was a pleasure. A couple of shrubs didn't take and were replaced promptly as well as some of the lawn.
Description of Work: New landscaping and irrigation system around 3 sides of house. Removed existing landscaping and lawn and 3 trees.
