I contracted with RJ Owens in August to replace my roof. The quote stated that they would be replacing any and ALL rotted wood. They performed the job and I paid them over $19,000. During Hurricane Milton, soffits came off and the wood beneath is totally rotten. I reached out to Johnny to see if they would remedy it. He said that if the wood was rotten, it would have been replaced and the roof would not have held during the storm. But the wood is absolutely rotten. I paid them to do a complete replacement and would not have known otherwise had the storm not blown my soffits down. Buyer Beware.

I have worked with Mike Cappucci on multiple projects related to my home and the work on my roof is always done on time and within budget. He is excellent at communicating the right level of details so I understand what is going to happen and what options I have. I would highly recommend Mike at RJ Owens Roofing.

RJ Owens Roofing damaged my 6 yr old ac unit and would not make it right. They damaged the wires/cables around my outside unit. Those wires immediately shorted out and blew my transformer. I had the same ac co that sold, installed, and does my yearly service check do the repairs. The cost was $474. RJ Owens Roofing agreed to pay only for the new wires but not the most expensive part which was the blown transformer and labor. They claim because my style of unit was not built with an internal fuse protector they should not have to pay for the damage their employee caused. The ac co owner explained that this is a design many brands use and does not in any way lessen the value of the unit. The perceived quality of my ac unit is no business of a roofing company to judge. It doesn't matter what style of unit they think I should have had, my unit design was not defective and was rated well. The bottom line is it worked perfectly until they damaged the wires which shorted the transformer. I deserve to have my ac restored to the same working condition it was the moment before they damaged my wires. Terrible customer service.

We needed a whole roof replacement and had heard horror stories regarding roofing companies in the Tampa Bay area, so we set out on the daunting task of getting bids from various companies. Most of the companies acted like it was a chore to come to our house to give a bid and the ones who did come had clauses in their contracts which stood out as being shady or gray areas. So, we asked a neighbor whom we trust and has been in Saint Pete for decades and he recommended RJ Owens. I called the office and the lady who answered the phone, Sandy, was more than happy to send someone to give a bid. I received a call from Gayle within hours and had a bid within 24 hours (he even worked around my schedule and met with me at 7:45 at night). He explained the bid and spent over 30 minutes with me showing what makes RJ Owens different from other roofers in Tampa Bay. They use hot dipped galvanized shingle nails with are highly rust resistant, in contrast to the other companies I had contacted. These nails lengthen the life of the roof which is good for homeowners but not for roofing companies....and RJ Owens is one of the only companies who use these nails. They also do not use "peel and stick" which traps moisture in the roof deck and causes rotting of the deck. This shows that they are more concerned with making the customer happy and being honest in their business practices. They also do not have the "gray areas" I had read in the other roofing contracts concerning wood replacement. In RJ Owens contract, they put the amount extra wood replacement will be in contrast to all the other companies who put blanket statements like "plywood and wood replacement will be an added cost". I cannot express how happy I am with the experience with RJ Owens. Gayle kept me in the loop the entire time and even recommended shingle colors that would go well with our house and accent colors. I had also heard stories about the aftermath of roofing companies and roofing nails being all over the driveway and yard....we did not find a single nail. I would recommend RJ Owens to anyone who wants a roof installed by a professional, honest company without all the hassle and red tape that plagues other companies in the area.

12 years of leaking. They have been out many times to try and fix the leaking and it still leaks to this day. The supervisor was a really nice guy and attempted to fix the issue several times. In all honesty, we had leaks in two different places in the roof and one they were able to fix but not the other, unfortunately. They replaced tile that doesn't match the rest of the roof. They also didn't paint the concrete to match the tile.

Bob, the estimator, provided appropriate detail about proposed scope of work, was consistently prompt with follow-up to my concerns and questions, and was a pleasure to work with. The large crew was on-site for 2 full days with smaller crews on-site for another 3-4 days. A good bit of repair was needed to damaged beadboard on the eaves and I had to ask for them to come back and do some areas that they'd missed. The fascia board replacement was pretty complex and labor-intensive; mid-repair there was a big rainstorm overnight which created a leak into the house where a roof tarp had not been secured; the foreman came out swiftly and got on the roof to secure the tarp. In talking with the city inspector, I realized I probably shouldn't have asked Owens to do that fascia repair (they are roofers, not carpenters) but Owens worked hard to make good choices about the structural repair and I am satisfied with the result. Most of my communications were with Bob, the estimator and project manager, but it would have been helpful to have more contact from the foreman or crew chief who was on-site every day.

Work is scheduled for late June 2015.
Description of Work: Bob B., their field supervisor, provided an estimate, phone consultation, and on-site visit to discuss re-roofing a home that we're in the process of purchasing. His responses were consistently timely, detailed and logical (we asked a lot of questions). Bob's estimate was in line with one other estimate received and lower than a 3rd. The house is an airplane bungalow with a number of shallow rooflines and creates some challenges so as not to alter the historic character… Bob was sensitive to and had good options to address these issues.

Since it was in a spot you can't see unless you go to the corner of the yard, I didn't notice until a few weeks after they were completed that they used brown shingles to replace the gray ones they peeled up on the regular roof in their replacement of the flat patio roof. Also there were gobs of white muck they had gotten on the shingles. I called the foreman (?), Mike. I had to wait until August until they came out and messed with it. It didn't look much better, but I was tired of dealing with it and you could only see it from the corner of the yard, so I dropped it. This was June 2013. A couple of weeks ago, Feb 2015, my shingle roof started leaking, right at the closest place to the flat roof, leaving stains and damage to my family room ceiling. I found another company with excellent ratings using Angie's list. They are up on the roof now fixing it. They can't believe the crappy job Owens Roofing did when they peeled up the shingle roof to tie it into the flat roof. He went into details about they didn't cut the old flashing and layer the new piece of flashing and didn't layer the shingles properly, with a whole explanation of why what Owens did caused the leak. We had had Owens do two complete roofs for other properties in the past, but with a different foreman, Gale. We were pleased with the work they did, and that is why I called them to do our flat roof. They caused me to have a $500 repair of my shingle roof, and I have yet to determine how much it will cost to fix my ceiling damage. I just hope they did an OK job on the flat roof. Also, I was told during the estimate that the fascia would be replaced free. He changed his mind apparently and charged me for that too.

Initially R.J. Owens Roofing repaired leaks in three areas of our tile roof. After a few months one leak reappeared two feet away, on the same exterior wall as the first soaking and ruining the carpet in that area.. A second area of repair done by Owen was also leaking as evidenced by the stain on the ceiling. We called them out as there was a warranty. In the first location, although it was two feet away from the first leak, they said it had nothing to do with the first repair. In the second location, they denied there was even a leak. We paid them to repair the first leak a second time accepting their word concerning it being unrelated to the first repair. Since they said the second leak was not leaking again, we left it alone. After this repair the tiles were put back in a haphazd manner, not at all they way they were placed prior to the repair. It looked horrible from the street. A few months later, still during the warranty period the leak re-emerged in the same exact place as before, wetting and ruining the new carpet, pad and tack strips that were installed. The second leak, which they said was not leaking was in fact leaking as evidenced by an expanding ceiling stain in that room and the wet to the touch ceiling. Again we called them out and the representative stated that neither were leaking. After several calls to the owner, he finally came out to our house. He too said there was no and quot;moistureand quot; in either location and declared there to be no leak for which they were responsible. Adding insult to injury he was rude and insulting. As for the tiles not being put back as they were prior to the repair he stated that it cannot always be done. What? The other three areas of repair looked the same as before the repair from the outside. We requested a refund, because we did not want them working on our roof again, which they denied. We turned to the BBB and the company denied responsibility. When a subsequent roofer was hired and opened up the area of one of the repairs, he called the work inappropriate and amateurish. It has come to our attention through the person who gave us this company's name that another party she referred to R.J. Owens Roofing had a similar problem with the leak re-emerging. AVOID THIS COMPANY.

The leak continued. I called them 4-5 times and they would not get back to me until 2 months later. He came back and offered to re-quote the job but he was not taking any responsibility that the leak continued. I had other contractors look at the work and they said he used the wrong materials and they did it incorrectly. Everyone else I talked with also said that he should have replaced the rotted wood which he advised me not to replace. I called them today and told them this but he made some smug comment about how and quot;other roofing contractors talk bad about other work and he does not do thisand quot;. This is just stupid I don't care about if he does or does not talk bad about others work I want the problem fixed and done correctly. I am now going to other contractors and this $585 was a complete waste of my money.

I called RJ Owens Roofing on the recommendation of the home inspector and the real estate agent that helped us in the process of purchasing a duplex. Their field supervisor, Gayle, called me a day or two later to arrange an inspection of the roof. We don't live on the premises, so he went to the duplex and introduced himself to the tenants living there and inspected the roof, then he called me that night with an estimate. Their estimate was right in the ball park with most of the other roofing companies we talked with, but RJ Owens follow-through made them stand out. Gayle's knowledge as a field supervisor, rather than being a salesman, also instilled a greater sense of confidence for us in RJ Owens. They worked with us to make sure we had the roof we wanted - one built to last 20 or so years and stand up to low level hurricanes and the blistering Florida sun. They were able to start the job a few days earlier than projected and in a day and a half completed the work. They left the yard and drive area clean and free of debris. The final cost came in within $100 of the estimate because we had a lot of rotten plywood that had to be replaced. We are thrilled with the new roof and working with Gayle was a pleasure!

Work done as scheduled. A few weeks later I decided I did not want a vent that I had previously told them to leave when they did the roof. I offered to pay for them to remove it. They removed it and repaired the roof at no charge. The work was done in 1994. I have had no problems at all with the roof. I would highly recommend this company.

Once we approved the project, John - the foreman for our project - took over. He was very responsive to the many questions we had including the installation of Hurricane clips on our 1961 home, extra ventilation for the attic, installing bathroom vent on the roof, how they were going to coordinate with the other contractors. John and Al (the team lead) went to great lengths to keep us at ease and informed as to the status of our projects. They even took pictures of the roof for our insurance. One example, as some may know, in Florida, intense storms can appear in a moments notice. That happened during our roof replacement. Al and John did what they could to ensure that the roof would not leak, but a small gap opened up during the storm. John came out to our home on a moments notice and sealed the leak on our roof in the rain at night. John and Al were very cooperative and helpful to the other contractors we had on site at the same time. We had an electrician (running power to the bathroom fans) and HVAC people who removed the existing package unit on the roof. It really put us at ease that Gayle and John took on coordinating with our other contractors on this project. We are very impressed with the work ethic and performance of Gayle, John, Al, and their team. We are going to use them for any future project we have. Gayle was very responsive to all our concerns while the project was underway and really looked out for us.
Description of Work: Gayle from RJ Owens was our contact for a complete tear-off and rebuild of our roof. We also needed electricians running wiring in the attic and HVAC people doing a replacement of the unit on the roof at the same time. While working on the estimate for our project, Gayle provided the most detailed and innovative solutions to the issues our home inspector pointed out for our newly purchased home. His solutions were practical and economical. We only had two gable vents on the North and South facing sides of the home for attic ventilation. Gayle suggested an offset ridge vent to act as an exhaust vent for the attic converting the gable vents as input vents. We needed to add bathroom fans to both bathrooms and Galye offered to connect the exhaust from the fans to the roof vents - all I needed to do was place the hose in the attic within reach of the roof. I really got the feeling that he was more interested in providing value and a service than getting a sale. He answered all my questions (not all had to do with roofing) - something none of the other contractors I interviewed could do.

Everything went totally as expected. The job foreman, Armando, was very professional and thorough. After the tear off, there was not one spec of trash, garbage, debris or nails anywhere on my property. The work was very noisy at its peak and I would recommend not staying at home until it is concluded. I had a wind mitigation report prepared after the work was complete by my home inspector. He indicated that the work was top quality. I was so pleased with the whole process that I sent a letter to Mr. Owens directly. (I did not work directly with him during the bidding process and the installation.)
Description of Work: Complete tear off and re-roof of my residence. Researched recommended options and chose to use stainless steel ring shank nails (FEMA recommended for buildings within 5 miles of the coast) and peel and stick waterproofing membrane (underlayment). I bid out this work by the book. I obtained three referrals from my home inspector, Thompson and Bender. I checked multiple references carefully. I verified current licenses both state and local. I checked with the Better Business Bureau and Pinellas County consumer affairs. I reviewed customer comments in Angie’s List. I visited several prior installations not only to view potential shingle colors but also to determine how work that was completed a number of years ago was holding up. I consulted with several construction experts who work in my office to verify the scope and materials. I carefully researched all of the products to be used on line and consulted various roofing blogs and forums in which products and methods were thoroughly discussed. In other words, I left no stone unturned in trying to find the best available contractors and products for this project. I selected R J Owens as a result of my conclusions from the bidding process. Also note I did not end up selecting the low bidder.

See Note Above. I think my requirement for I-9s in the contract made him not respond.
Description of Work: ROOF HISTORY: Our home was built in 1960 with a concrete tile roof. In 1993, when we bought the home as the second owner, we removed the tile roof and put on shingles. Considering the shingle roof was 19 years old (although we didn’t have any leaks), we felt it was time for a new roof. By the way, we felt lucky we had a shingle roof for 19 years; however, the original shingle roof contractor, Albritton, was supposed to cut ridge vents over our roof and over the study. However, they did not cut the vent, but provided a ridge to look like a vent! Now we know why our study was so hot. On Dec 6, 2011, we contracted with Triple Crown for $23,226 for a new metal roof with PBR Roofing Panel (Commercial grade), 26 gauge, to include the PBR interlocking gutter. THE COMPETITION: I contacted ten (10) contractors, but I will talk about the final seven as they were the most viable. Most importantly, once we decided the material (Gulf Coast Supply & Manufacturing, LLC, 4020 SW 449th Street, Horseshoe Beach, FL 32648), I talked with them for recommended sources. This proved to be the good decision. FINAL CONTRACT: One item that I required in the contract was that all contractors have an I-9 for each employee. The purpose of the I-9 is to document that each new employee (both citizen and noncitizen) hired after November 6, 1986, is authorized to work in the United States. We also specified 150 mph winds, requested three (3) references, and the wind mitigation form for our insurance company. Finally, I wanted the contractor to sign “my contract” or sign his contract with all my specifications. I contacted the Better Business Bureau (BBB), Angie’s List, St. Petersburg City, Pinellas County and FL State to verify license, insurance and complaints. The companies that visited our home and we had negotiations are: KBS Metal Roofing Supply, LLC; Owens Roofing Contractor, Inc.; Green Roofing Technologies, Inc.; Tosca Roofing; Arry’s Roofing Services, Inc., FL Southern Roofing and Sheetmetal, Inc.; and Triple Crown Roofing KBS Metal Roofing Supply, LLC only provided the material, but no labor; therefore, we eliminated them in the beginning as we did not want to put the roof on ourselves. Owens Roofing never responded with a quote or proposal even after repeated reminder phone calls. This was unusual as the economic times are very difficult right now. Green Roofing sent over Robby Brown to meet with us and he had no knowledge of metal roofing. Unfortunately, it was a waste of our time. However, the next meeting was with Kelly Jackson, their metal roofing expert. He provided us a wonderful detailed specification and bid on a Gerard Lifetime Roof, but it was not the Galvalume as we wanted. Kelly worked very h a second quote, but he never provided me a second quote. I also never received the three references. Also, they do not do gutters. They also wanted to provide Drexel Material which we hear is excellent, but we had decided on Gulf Coast. Labor warranty was five years. BBB rating was A- and 2 complaints in 3 years (Product and Services); Angie’s List had no listing. License and insurance checked out ok. Tosca was the least expensive, but they could not do the gutters and the owner did not want to sign my contract. They were a very good contractor and Edel Travieso seemed very honest and forthcoming. Labor warranty was five years. BBB rating was A+ and 2 complaints in 3 years (Prod/Serv & Warranty), Angie’s List rating was a “B” with 2 Reports (1 "F" and 1 "A"). License and insurance checked out ok. Florida Southern Roofing was one of the top three contracts I considered. They were the second highest bid. I believe this is because they have more overhead than a small business. I tried to negotiate a lower amount, but they could not give on the price. They said we got their best price in the beginning. Their estimator, Mark Mazer, was very detailed and extremely honest. I had several technical questions that we had to contact Randy Finch (Operations) and he also was very helpful. They offered a labor warranty of 10 years. BBB rating was A+ and 3 complaints in 3 years (mainly Products), Angie’s List had no reports, but they were listed. License and insurance checked out ok. Arry’s Roofing Services, Inc. was our second place contractor. Unfortunately, they were the highest bid. However, you could see the quality in their bid by their thoroughness. Jayson Hansel and Mattew Housh were superb. Matter of fact, Mr. Housh really—I mean really—tried to work with me and gave me almost $6,000 off! BBB rating was A+ and 2 Complaint in 3 years, Angie’s List is “A” with Angie numerous comments that reported mainly "A", but a few "D"s & "F" regarding 2 or 3 roofs leaks. License and insurance checked out ok. Triple Crown Roofing was the second lowest contractor. This company impressed me the most! It was a small business with only four or five employees. The Foreman, Mike Royal, visited with us by himself. He was very impressive. He didn’t have any fancy folders or glossy sheets except from Gulf Coast. He talked with us to understand the job and how he would approach the performance to our satisfaction. He even recommended wrapping our pipe vents with Galvalume before applying the boots. Little precautionary items made us feel he really knew roofing. Mr. Royal also stated they would “beat any price”. We eventually met with Mike Royal and the Owner, Leon Nault. Again, we were impressed with their message and their work ethic. Mr. Nault was extremely honest and willing to do anything we wanted. Matter of fact, one small note is that we were going to add ventilation fans and a ridge vents. However, Mr. Nault warned us that using these both together with the size our home would probably not work (Florida Southern and Arry’s eventual told us this also, but Triple Crown caught it right off). BBB had no listing, Angie’s List had no reports, but they were listed. I did have one problem in researching their performance. When I called the Pinellas County, I found that his license had expired on May 26, 2009 (Triple Crown was notified on May 12, 2009 and all the permit offices were notified on June 24, 2009). Once pursuing this with Mr. Nault, he stated that he let the license expire since he does not have much business in Pinellas County. He stated that it would not be a problem to renew his license. He did renew the license and his insurance checked out ok. I received 13 references from Triple Crown. This is what sealed the deal. I think Nr. Nault was surprised because I called all 13 contacts. “All” the references could not say enough about the professionalism, thoroughness, quality of work, and pricing. In conclusion, I would not hesitate to contract with Triple Crown Roofing, Arry’s Roofing Services, Inc. and Florida Southern Roofing. Tosca was also on my final list, but more negotiations/research would have to be done. THE TECHNICAL RESEARCH ON SPECIFICATIONs FOR OUR ROOF: My husband is a professional engineer so he did research on the technical specifications. I know we were going to get a “grey” galvalume color, but after he did his research he decided white for the UV protection. Also, we applied a Polyglass Underlayment Membrane (Polystick TU plus) and the roof insulation was Covertech rFoil Reflective, double bubble double foil 5/16 with aluminum tape. We had battens installed and we brushed them with Borax to prevent termites. We also used the Lifetime Warranty WoodMAC Screws.

They did very well. The inspector recently informed me I have about 9 years left on it, which was slightly longer than Owens had expected.
Description of Work: They did a tar gravel roof replacement on my 1956 home.

They did a good job and they were very reputable. I had many recommendations from several friends. They were on time and completed the work quickly. They also cleaned up well when they were finished. I also had them come back and fix another area of the roof that they had not done before and they fixed it for me.
Description of Work: I had them replace a flat roof over our patio.
