Gentleman from DB Home Improvements came out to my home in May to give me an estimate for a complete master bathroom remodel. It took him almost a week to be able to get out to me, but he was punctual and his demeanor was professional. After looking at the job and taking some measurements he said he would write something up, but gave me a ballpark number based on his experience that was more than double what my interior designer had estimated for the job. I bid the job out to 3 other contractors, all of which were within $3,000 of each other and all of which were in fact less half of what DB was talking, including plumbing fixtures, cabinets, and countertops. We are now about 2 weeks away from completing the remodel, which included a floor plan change, for less than half of what DB estimated. It may very well be that this contractor does excellent work, but his pricing was way out of line for my job. Make sure you get at least two other estimates.

Hi [Member Name Removed]. I am glad to hear you got exactly what you want, and I understand that prices are important. Thank you for my demeanor complements, and I am sorry to hear you are so disappointed with your free estimate. Estimates are given free of charge for you to decide who to hire. I would say your estimate is a success. [Member Name Removed], please understand that I have no idea regarding your business, what contractor you went with or you personal feelings on government involvement. I am simply trying to help out, including all who will read this online review. Nor do I have any interest in your decisions. Projects that are major remodeling have issues that can arise, these are a few we have seen. The building department has blueprints on record with the original details of the bathroom. The new bathroom is vastly different with a new floor plan. Without new drawings and permits more than complications with a home sale can arise. If an insurance claim comes up, the insurer will claim to have not insured the new bathroom which is true, they insured a building department inspected bathroom. I checked with the city for you they have no record of permitting https://www.paslc.org/ RECard/#/propCard /48845 on this project yet. They may be behind in posting permits. You can use this link to see what and when permits are posted. You may want to check with your contractor to be sure. If you have not signed a notarized notice of commencement at city hall as Florida law dictates for over a certain dollar amount. http://www.leg.state.fl.us/Statutes/index.cfm?App_mode=Display_Statute&URL=0700-0799/0713/Sections/0713.13.html the warning reads, if you don't, "CAN RESULT IN YOUR PAYING TWICE FOR IMPROVEMENTS TO YOUR PROPERTY." I have gotten the calls from the scenarios listed above from homeowners that could not reach the contractor that did their project. The contractor is liable first, but it all lands on the homeowner once the contractor stops responding. Angie's list has certified your contractors. Angie's list disclosed that your contractor has attested (claimed) they possesses all required licensing. The licensing requirement in Florida for a project like yours must have a CRC, RRC, CBC, RBC, CGC, or RGC before the numbers, plus any plumbers electricians or HVAC contractors. https://www.myfloridalicense.com/wl11.asp?mode=1&SID=&brd=&typ= (enter construction industry in the drop down.) if not the contractors are working out of the scope of their license, is a criminal misdemeanor in Florida. Without proper licensing homeowners have no claim to the FLORIDA HOMEOWNERS' CONSTRUCTION RECOVERY FUND http://www.myfloridalicense.com/dbpr/pro/cilb/documents/recov_form.pdf Angie's list is in California and told me, "we cannot keep up with local licensing on a national basis." They have posted on their site asking you to check licensing requirements of their contractors. I am "certified" by Angie's List and have never given them a background check authorization form because the state of Florida does an extensive background check before issuing any construction licensing. I will not email my Social Security number to a lead salesman in California for a background check. I also did not buy their badge. I do not know what they are basing my "Angie's list certification" on. While inquiring about Angie's lists background check with them I was told they go back 3 years they do not look at credit scores, currant driver license status, liability insurance or workers compensation compliance. They do disclose on their site that homeowners should do that on their own. That can be complicated (see below.) Back in 06 I bought some customer leads from them, not since. Their primary business is to sell leads and hope all goes well, it normally does go well and they have some great service contractors that rely heavily on Angie's list for customers. Based on the couple Angie's list jobs we get each year the customers are loyal to Angie's list. I am glad they are so happy, but it does not change the Angie's list "certification" methods. One effective way they sell customer leads it to put all contractors that claim licensing for a particular category on the site and represent them all as the same without verifying licenses. They simply have no liability for this, so it is a strange certification. A few things to check up on when remodeling a bathroom based on failure calls we have received from people over the years. When cutting the foundation to relocate plumbing fixtures the cut always removes the metal reinforcement in the slab. Over time the compromised slab can crack and sink. Engineering requires footings be poured and metal reinforcement with pins to the existing slab be installed with most slab foundation repairs after cutting. Also required is subterranean termite treatment in the disrupted soil under the new concrete. Make sure whoever is plumbing uses appropriate cement manufactured for the type of pipe being used and primer showing in the joints. Piping should be tested with air to twice the pressure of you city water supply before closing the walls. Watch for grout failure, with old fashion porous grout it tends to crack (mold and stain) with any type of movement. These hairline cracks work with the porosity of the grout and cause premature failure. Go with flexible grout if it is in the budget, It is mold resistant and does not crack from minor movements or normal vibration. Polyurethane or Epoxy grout can add decades to your shower when installed correctly. The shower pan liner installation is sensitive. Be sure there are no screws near the bottom of the rubber pan liner ensuring no premature leaks. There needs to be a first pour of non organic product that is tapered to the drain. The rubber pan liner needs to pass through the slots in the drain to ensure the pan drains under the tile, look inside the drain and see if liner is visible inside. The liner gets installed over the first tapered pour and hooked up to the drain. Install a test plug to the drain and fill with water. The building department likes to be present when the plug gets pulled to be sure that pan drains when it is full of water and there are no leaks, if not leaks take a few years to show and occur from low screws or accidental razor bumps (slits) without knowledge. We get multiple calls a year for leaking shower pans that have caused deterioration to the surrounding areas in the bathroom and adjoining rooms in and around the 6 year time frame. Insurance does not cover seepage. After the pan has been checked for leaks and drainage it is safe to install the modified mortar and tile. This is an incomplete list and does not cover the entire list of the failures we have seen over the years. Hopefully, your project goes well for you, [Member Name Removed], and there is never an issue that comes up and your bathroom lasts well past the one-year warranty period. After leaving Connecticut with the same satisfaction rating we have maintained in Florida it takes great care to do so. Hope is not a tactic we have a full year round work schedule with no less than five star reviews from our customers that we have worked for and feel the same way we do. [Member Name Removed], feel free to give me a call I can try to clear up any questions you may have about this.

First let preface this review with the fact that I own a 1959 house which in of itself can be a challenge for home improvements. I was presented with Invoices that detailed the work to be done with several choices. Replacing wood with cement board was a no brainer as was replacing a wood picket fence with a vinyl picket fence because after all we do live in Florida. I was kept informed about all stages of the project and given options when issues were found. Kevin even came later in the evening to repair and add cement board so that the gutter installation could proceed smoothly. These guys have the ability to think outside the box which is a blessing when you have an older home like mine. They do the work themselves so you can have total confidence that they have a vested interest for your complete satisfaction. I referred my friend to them already and they responded to her immediately. I still have work to be done and of course these are the guys that will be doing it. Needless to say they have my highest recommendation. Look forward to getting more improvements!
Description of Work: Replacing wood soffit and fascia with cement board, replacing wood trim around windows with cement board, painting, installation of gutters replacing old ones and installing gutters were none existed before, replacing a wood picket fence with a vinyl picket fence, spraying an existing 6 ' Wood Fence with Thompsons's Water Repellent.

First let me preface this with the fact that my home was built in 1959 which in of itself can be a challenge. I was presented with Invoices for the Fence Options and the Wood Replacement Options and Options to improve drainage. Everything was explained to me in detail. No one had to convince me of the value of cement board since we had cement board siding in the past and of course this is Florida so when you weigh the lifetime of wood versus cement board it is a no brainer as far as I am concerned. The fence choice was another no brainer since it will not rot, does not need painting, etc. Everything was done as soon as possible and I was kept informed of all aspects of the project along the way. As is the case with a house this age there were some unexpected findings but Kevin was able to deal with those findings and even came later one evening so he could finish those repairs prior to the gutters being installed. These guys have the ability to think outside the box which is an extremely valuable asset with an older home. The transformation is phenomenal! DB Home Improvements still has more work to do and of course I will recommend them to my friends. Actually, while some of the work was being done, I did refer a friend of mine to DB Home Improvements. Thanks Dave and Kevin for a Superior Job. You can count on these guys since they actually do the work themselves.

It was a refreshing change from what my wife and I have come to expect from contractors. DB Home Improvement came in and their team set up their workspace by dividing with plastic to keep the mess neutralized. Paper was taped to floor to create pathways that kept dust and dirt from building up on our floor. When they started the job they stayed on the job until it was done. They worked full days not showing up for a few hours here and a few hours there. They realized we wanted our house back as quickly as possible and kept the pace up until completion. They were meticulous to details and genuinely concerned with our happiness, treating our home the way they would their own. They gave us a proper quote up front and then stuck to the quote. They didn't start dropping a bunch of "extras" on us which is another thing we got from other contractors. i would definitely use DB Home Improvements again.
Description of Work: Db Home Improvement tore out rotten drywall, bathtub, ceiling and replaced with new tiled shower. They dried everything out and got rid of all rotten and moldy material and completely remodeled the unit. They also did a picture window in our kitchen.
