Response from Broten Garage Door Sales
Our last visit to this members home was in August of 2013. At that time we serviced the door and the door was functioning properly when we left. We have had no further communication with this member. We were therefore surprised to read this review stating we were at the home in March of 2014. Since receiving the review we have made numerous attempts to contact the member by telephone and have left multiple voice mail messages. To date we have not received a return phone call. Description of Work: I had a broken garage door spring and called Broten. They gave me the price over the phone and promised to call later to confirm the appointment. They called a few hours later and confirmed the appointment for the following day. They called me when the technician was on his way. He was on time and replaced both springs in about 35 minutes. They gave me a lifetime warranty on the springs and three years on labor.

Overall - it was great
Description of Work: Sales rep arrived punctually and made an excellent presentation. When my old 2-car door, all wood, was taken down not a mess was made. I had the Clopay installed, they handled all the permits required by Palm Beach County. I have a new Liftmaster installed that, when electricity is out, I can still open and close the garage door over a period of 3 days. It also has a sensor so when I enter the garage putting lights on is not necessary. The installation crew was prompt, courteous and left my garage floor cleaner than what it was before. I highly recommend them.

An "A" company all around.
Description of Work: We are undertaking a complete renovation of our home and started with the garage door. We had used Broten before because our springs were always breaking and eventually we needed a new motor. We were previously fixing the door every year it seemed. The service guys were great and told us that we had not been getting the heavy duty springs. The company was so easy to work with that when we had to replace the door we chose them. Bruce in sales was awesome. Arrived on time, quickly took measurements, made suggestions and helped me to select the door that would enhance the look of our home. Contracts, etc. were explained in detail. The day of the installation was as smooth as it could be. The installers were polite and courteous, went straight to business, and had the door installed in exactly the time that I was advised. The company is also Women Certified!!!! Bruce suggested a young lady who happens to be an artist who came and painted the access door to the garage to match the wooden finish on the garage door. I couldn't be happier or more pleased with their service. I have recommended the twice to friends who also had the same great experience. Go Broten!!!

Description of Work: Morning of 2/7/2012 old garage door with motor came crashing down. Called Broten Garage and Gate at 12:15, said they would send someone out this afternoon. Called at 2:45 they were on their way. 3:00 service arrived. Gave me price for repair or new motor. Decided on new motor due to new features. Serviced the door at no charge. Lance was my serviceman and he was wonderful.

The experience was outstanding.
Description of Work: The garage door was off track and could not be closed. The repair person fixed the door frame and replaced the motor. the frame was noticeably bent and the motor no longer worked.

Description of Work: I knocked the garage door off its tracks and called Broten for repair. They came out the same day, calling me when I was the next stop so I could leave my job and meet the repairman who showed up just when he said he would. He qouted me a price to put the door back on track then said he noticed several broken hinges, for an additional price. I have used Broten about a half-dozen times over the last 10 years. There responsiveness, punctuality, and professionalism have all been excellent. One time, however, I had a broken spring that I had replaced and about a year-and-a-half later, the spring broke again. I called Broten and asked them why a spring would break so quickly after an installation. I was told that if the door opened and closed frequently, this could happen. Note: I have a two-car garage so the door opened and closed about four times a day. The repair man came out and told me the reason the spring broke a second time was because the wrong type spring was originally installed and that there would be no charge for the repair, which I thought was great. About 2 weeks later, the office called me and said they wanted to charge my credit card $200 for the service call. I explained what the repairman told me, had a service receipt listing no charge, and that I didn't think it was fair to be charged aftre the fact. The women on the other end of the phone told me she would have to speak with a supervisor and would get back to me. While I never heard from the woman again, there was no charge put on my credit card. Since that time, I called Broten for the above repair, which came off with no repercussions. I would not hesitate to call out Broten again in the future.

Description of Work: I’ve had a poor experience with Broten in the past and stopped using them for service. My garage spring broke and as a result, the chain rail bent. I was informed that this rail was proprietary to Broten and I was somewhat obligated to call them. I informed Broten that this rail was broken and to bring the part. When their service man arrived (10/27/11), he did not have the part and told me it was no longer available. He then attempted to sell us a $400 replacement motor. I explained that they replaced the motor unnecessarily a few years earlier and that was the very reason I no longer used Broten. I explained that he would need to find a replacement part, as they warranteed their parts for life (yet charge more than most companies to replace the warranted parts, so no bargain there!). He then said someone would come back the following day with the part. The next day (10/28/11), the service man arrived. After beginning his work, a neighbor pulled up to buy parts from the service man. Rather than direct the neighbor to call Broten or to wait until he was done with my job to sell parts, he stood with my neighbor conducting business. My wife asked that he complete our job as I had to get to work. He told my wife not to worry, that he wouldn’t charge us for that time. My wife explained that my time costs me money and to please finish our job. After 30 minutes of waiting, I went outside and asked my neighbor to kindly wait until my job was done. The service man said “we are almost finished”. I then told the service man that if he didn’t return to work, I would call Broten and ask them to send someone else. He snickered and continued to do his side business. I then told him that he was not going to finish this job. I went to my garage to get his ladder and tools. He jumped in my way and said “I’ll get my things”. I told him to get off my property and that I would bring him his tools. He then pushed me to get into my garage. I told him that if he didn’t leave immediately, I would call the police. He was in my face, yelling “you need to take your meds”. I then called the police. He stood in front of my house for awhile and eventually left. I then called three other garage companies to do the work. All of them familiar with Broten and after hearing the above story, each said it doesn’t surprise us. THERE IS NO WAY, EVEN FOR FREE, WOULD I EVER DO BUSINESS WITH BROTEN AGAIN!

Response from Broten Garage Door Sales
We were called to the member's home to repair a broken spring on his garage door. Upon inspection, our technician discovered that the operator had been damaged as well when the homeowner attempted to operate the door with a broken spring. A replacement rail was needed, but is not a part we carry on our trucks since we no longer sell this brand of operator. In that the operator was over five years old and that operator technology has advanced significantly, and considering that the cost to repair the existing unit would be significant, we recommended replacement of the entire operator. The member declined, and repair was scheduled for the next day. We returned the next day to perform the repairs. Our technician set up his tools and ladder in the garage and began to work. While he was working inside the garage, a neighbor entered the garage and asked our technician if he could purchase a remote transmitter for his own home. Our technician explained that he was in the middle of a job which would take him about two hours, and that when he was done, he would see to the neighbor's request. The neighbor was persistent, and persuaded our tech that it wouldn't take long to accommodate him. Our tech believed he was doing the right thing by stopping for a few minutes to assist the neighbor. At this point, our tech left the garage and went to his truck to procure the part. The member came out of the house while our tech was helping the neighbor and asked him to return to work. Our techincian assured her that he was not charging her for the time and that he would be finished in a moment. The member then came out and insisted that the neighbor leave, and that our tech return to work immediately. Because our tech did not return immediately to the garage, the member closed the garage with our man's tools and ladder inside and instructed him to leave his property. Our tech explained he couldn't leave without his tools and ladder and went to retrieve them, but the member would not allow him into the garage. The member brought the tools out to him and told him he had called the police. Our technician called our office to report this incident. We advised him to wait for the police so that both sides could give a statement. After waiting some time we instructed our technician to move on, not really knowing whether the police had actually been called. Of course, we regret that this incident occurred, and that the actions of our technician upset the member. Our technician admits that, realizing how upset the member became, he made a poor decision and should have insisted that the neighbor wait. We certainly did not intend to create the result here. Description of Work: Called Broton based upon Angie's list. Gave me a fair price, competitive with other gate companies so I selected them based upon reputation. They replaced my gate security key pad, post, etc. When they came to install they asked me if I wanted a camera like the unit they were replacing. I expressed surprise since I asked for a quote to replace what was there. They said they didn't understand that and the camera would be an additional $430. I was upset because I had already waited for the unit. They said they could install without it and add the camera later, which is what we did. Two months later, while we were at our vacation home for the summer, our property experienced a power surge and the key pad was fried. I called Broton to go out and fix it. They called me back and said they would send me a proposal by email. I waited and waited and nothing ever came. I called Gatemasters and they immediately responded and had technicians out the next day. They didn't require me to send a deposit, sign the proposal or anything. As a previous customer they said they would handle and bill me later. Great experience. Gatemasters also agreed to fix the key pad that Broton had installed. Since we had the new system such a short time and then were gone for 2 1/2 months, I couldn't remember the factory codes for opening the gate (these are the standard combinations, not our personal entry code). I called Broton and was told they didn't know them, that I would have to call the manufacturer. Mind you, they could pull any unit off the shelf and look in the booklet as these codes are the same for all Liftmaster units like ours. I asked why no one there could do that for me as I had no contact with the manufacturer. They refused to be of any help. I asked what happened to the repair proposal. The lady said she tried to call me several times and left messages. I told her that they said they would email it to me and that I checked messages every day and never had one. I asked what number she called and it was a totally unfamiliar number. She said, "Oh, that must be why I couldn't reach you." I asked why she simply didn't look on our customer record which has the correct phone numbers. She had no answer for that. The service, follow-through, effort to help, etc. was and is terrible. I don't know who's having these great experiences with this company but I found them to be bungling and unresponsive. I feel deceived by the people who put these glowing reports on Angie's list because my conclusion was not drawn from one interaction but from three different occasions. They are 0 for 3. I would definitely not recommend them to anyone. I suspect they have found a way to get friends and others to report glowing, bogus reports.

Response from Broten Garage Door Sales
The member contacted us for a quotation to replace a telephone entry system (TES) at his residence. Our sales representative went to the home to get the information necessary to provide a proposal. He provided that proposal, and the member placed an order with us. Regrettably, our representative failed to ascertain that the existing system included a video camera. As the member states, we went ahead with the installation and added the camera on a subsequent visit. Some months later we received a service request from Mr. Long because his gate system had stopped working. We were able to determine that the system had experienced a voltage surge which damaged both the gate control circuit board and the transformer for the TES. Mr. Long was not present at the home to receive an estimate for the cost of the repair, and we were unable to reach him to obtain authorization to order the parts and proceed with the repair. It is clear now that our office had an incorrect phone number for Mr. Long. After not hearing from us in a timely manner, Mr. Long contracted with another firm to complete the necessary repairs. While this firm was performing the work, Mr. Long called our service department requesting programming information for the keypad portion of the TES. The service representative he spoke with at that time was unable to provide the factory default code to Mr. Long. Trying to be helpful, she suggested he could contact the manufacturer directly for that information. At this point, Mr. Long let us know how disappointed he was with our customer service. He said he would be posting a bad review, and added that no one should bother to call him back to apologize. After reviewing and discussing the experience Mr. Long had with Broten Garage Door & Gate, we acknowledge that we could have and should have performed much better. Our sales representative should have discovered the presence of a video camera, our service dispatcher should have confirmed we had the correct phone number, or tried another when we failed to reach him, and, finally, we should have taken it upon ourselves to research and provide the default code for the keypad. We regret that we caused this inconvenience for Mr. Long. We have put procedures in place to prevent a repeat of this type of performance, and I have placed a call and left a message for Mr. Long, offering my personal apology, and asking if there is anything we could do to make this situation right for him.
