I hired Scott to install a wall A/C unit and it came out well. So I told Scott that I received a quote to renovate my bathroom and Scott said I can renovate your bathroom. I told Scott what my wife and I wanted to do and he was very confident that he could renovate our bathroom. So after agreeing on a price I completed an outline of the project before Scott started and Scott agreed. The main part of the remodel involved a current shower was to be removed and a new partial wall built, and the shower walls were removed and replaced and were to be tiled. After a week Scott said he was finished, I had an opportunity to review the job that he did and I wrote a list with about 10 things that were left unfinished. The top of the shower partial wall was completely left un-tiled, a large tile on the floor stuck up at an angle that was very obvious, the bathroom door was not completely painted, the vanity was not calked among the items and I reviewed with Scott the issues to fix. Now with all the issues that was left undone it was obvious that Scott just wanted to get paid and move on to the next job. I would have been okay if he told me I need more time to work on the project, could I come back and work in the evenings or weekend. Fast forward eight months my wife is pulling some items out of her closet and she takes out a plastic clothes bath that was in the back of the closet and what she sees is a big mold spot about 2 foot by 2 foot. So everything was removed from the closet and that patch of mold is on the same wall as the shower head and nozzle. Not knowing what caused the mold and knowing it is a health danger, we have a gentlemen who had been helping us lay floor tile tear out the dry wall to see where the mold was coming from. My instant suspicion was Scott's bathroom tile job. The reason for our suspicion was the other things we discovered after Scott left like a small floor tile that stuck up like a sharp point that we discovered while taking a shower, the step in the tile where the stucco has come lose, areas of the bathroom paint that had been missed, the area around the window that looked like a kid tiled the window area, there was a gap of about 1" where there was no shower floor tiles used. It was apparent that the leak was coming from the shower nozzle side of the shower and after 8 months was causing mold inside the wall and the drywall. The gentleman that tore out the moldy drywall said Scott had used regular drywall that deteriorates when it gets wet and is not designed to be used in a shower. Also inside the same wall between the shower and the closet was an open container of liquid that was half full. Why would someone put a bottle inside a person wall when working on their shower. I called Scott at his number listed on his website and asked him to call me. After a couple of days of calling Scott called me back, I told Scott the problem and I said it is quite obvious that the shower is leaking and the drywall is completely drenched with water. I told Scott that I needed to get a plumber to confirm where it was leaking from and the shower wall would have to be torn down to get access to the nozzel. Also, it did not make sense as I was told not to use cement board instead of drywall. I told Scott about some of the things that was discovered because of the shower leak, like why would you use regular drywall instead of cement board, Scotts reply I used green board its used all the time in showers. Green board is still drywall and should never be used in showers . I found out that "Greenboard" can still be used in bathrooms (and other areas), it just cannot be used as a backer for tile in a shower or tub surround. It can be used in areas not subject to direct water exposure (tub/shower surround), and areas of noncontinuous high humidity (bathrooms). Scott used the greenboard to attach the tiles inside the shower which you cannot do. I asked Scott can you assist me in anyway to help fix my shower and he said I will call you tomorrow morning. Scott never called back and I left numerous messages with him. I called a plumber to come out within a couple days and the plumber confirmed that there was a screw head around the nozzel that was loose and this caused the leak in the shower. After talking to some very knowledgeable people I have since learned was having a shower replaced that you want to last 20+ years don't construct a shower like Scott did. Scott used mastic instead of thinset to attach tiles to wall. Scott used greenboard, a glorified drywall not meant to use in showers, Scott did not put any sealant on the new walls which is a necessity to putting in new shower walls. Scott used the wrong type of grout for the size grout lines. I would like to warn other people concerning Scotts handy work and if there is a problem of any significance Scott will not stand behind his work. Scott is in business to serve himself, not the customers that place their trust in him. As a business owner as well I know it is a privilege to be self employed and serve the public and your reputation is very important in the community you work. Unfortunately Scott has shown he does not care about his customers. I am now having to pay someone to redo my entire shower because of the shoddy work of Scott Johnson handyman.
