I hired Brown to install an AC unit for my mother. We had purchased a new unit and had the serial number for it, which we would need for the warranty. When Brown came out to install the unit, they did not bring the unit that I had purchased. The unit they brought already had some dings and some of the vents were bent. I told the tech that this was not the correct AC unit. They told me that this one was better than the one I had paid for and was actually more expensive, but they could give it to me as it was used. They said they only used it for training and that was it. They installed the unit and said they would take care of the warranty paperwork, they never did.

They said the unit needed to be replaced. I was dumb enough just to go along with the program. Finally it occurred to me to see when I bought this thing but they just hauled it off. It was still under warranty. I called them and told them I wanted them to give me a credit. They refused to do anything. Their pricing was pretty high. They came right out. I don't think it was very professional to do that.

Description of Work: Each time this Co. comes here for a routine cleaning & check out unit visit, the tech finds an expensive problem even though the system seems to run perfectly before his visit. |On 01/16/13 Co replaced a fan motor($286.05). On 04/28/14 I was told that I needed a storm kit ($438.95) It was placed INSIDE the compressor casing - out of sight.I called the next day to ask why I could not see the unit (in case green light turns to red) & that I had no paper work with this new install. I was provided with the paper work where I read that the storm kit should be installed several feet away from the condenser- in view. |On 01/15/15 tech arrived for routine check & I was told that head pressure was low & I needed a TXV @ cost of $392. |Finally< I was smart enough to call another (recommended) AC Co.& they found a fan wire disconnected from the defrost board- apparently not connected in 2013.TXV valve was working fine and storm kit unit was installed OUTSIDE the compressor unit as it should be! This was done for less than 1/3 the estimated cost of the TXV which I did not need! |Unfortunately, at that last Brown encounter, while I declined the repair the tech was telling me that if I did not relace that valve the motor would burn out, I did ,under pressure. sign up for 3 future AC check-ups @ the cost of %180. I have since sent 2 letters, last one registered(04/14) requesting the return of my $180. paid for services not yet rendered. NOT a word from Brown Co. to date!!! (I am a 73 year old woman living alone and feel victimized due to that.) Sad.

was no Maytag brand on the unit, nor was there a serial number. We decided to caution people from using this company due to these problems. Our time for inspection on this unit is up and Browns called my husband to inform him inspection is due. He explained we no longer had the unit and would like the cost of the yearly inspection back. They said it was too late. He also told the person how upset he was about this whole incident. Today we received another call from Browns on my phone and I had my husband answer. He went through the whole story again and asked them to take us off their phone list. The previous owners purchased a U/V Kit in Feb. 2013 for $799 then were charged $389 the next year for a U/V lamp and kit in Dec. 2013. The technician could not explain why they were charged twice within 10 months. We have kept all of the previous owner's paperwork. I would caution everyone against using this company -- especially seniors -- unless you question everything. We figured we did not want to be taken advantage of and got another company who came highly recommended for being honest. We did not get our yearly inspection money back. I just hope they take us off of their phone list.
Description of Work: We purchased a house and one of the factors for the purchase was the Maytag air conditioning unit was under five years old and supposedly was under warranty. We started having problems immediately and called Brown's. The person came out, charged us $59.95 for a two times inspection. He inspected the unit and found over $2,800 worth of repairs that needed to be done. We showed him the paperwork the previous owner (seniors) showed us -- and even he had problems understanding why they had been charged for the same thing two years in a row. We were then told there was no warranty on the unit even though we had paperwork allegedly from Maytag stating it was under 10 year warranty for parts. We asked him to leave and called another company recommended by family. They confirmed the unit needed to be replaced due to an evaporator leak. They also stated there

We called because our AC was not working. The technician came to our home the same day & explained everything to my husband & I. The technician gave us AC options & with his knowledge about AC units, we felt confident that we made a good choice. The install happened a few days later & Thanks to our installer, John who was very friendly & very knowledgeable everything went smoothly. John was patient with my husband I while he showed us how to use the new AC system. A few days later, the county inspector came to inspect the installation & to verify the system was working properly & he told us that everything passed with flying colors. We are very please to say that our new unit is cooling perfectly & we actually just received our FPL bill & our bill was $108 less then the previous month. Its great to know that the new AC system will pay for itself. We highly recommend Browns Heating & Cooling!!!!

Patrick was awesome and very knowledgable. He was the best service technician that we have ever used with Brown (we have used Brown at least 3 years) because he was so thorough with cleaning and doing the maintenance work on our AC unit and compressor. He went way above a usual maintenance call and thoroughly cleaned our compressor and AC and found we needed to replace the capacitor on the unit. He also showed us that our coils were rusting and needed to be replaced as well as our return needs to be upsized (incorrect size put in 8 years ago). Even though we are not ready to make these changes now, I really appreciated Patrick going over all the options with us and explaining what future changes we will need to make to our unit in the next 6 months. I would recommend Patrick and Brown to anyone who wants an excellent honest job done on their AC! Also I really appreciate getting 2 maintenance calls for $59 annually!
Description of Work: Patrick of Brown Heating and Cooling did my 6-month AC tuneup and also replaced a capacitor on my unit.

After the installation I noticed that one of the refrigerant lines at the compressor was badly kinked. When I called them up they said I kinked the line. I sent them an email with a picture saying is this work acceptable. Then then sent a repair man and he said this was shoddy workmanship and blamed it on his partner. The coolant lines in the attic were all damaged with slices in the insulation exposing the copper liners also they left all the old copper lines in the attic. When I called and wanted to talk to the owner they said I could not talk to the owner he just took emails. So I sent him an email which he never answered or removed the piping or repaired the tubing insulation My yearly service was fine but the serviceman tried to sell me a surge suppressor saying the incoming voltage was to high an could burn out my unit .I asked him if that is true why didn't they match the newly installed ac unit with the proper voltage. He did not have an answer. When I told him I am a former electrical contractor and engineer and the incoming voltage was quite normal which I made him prove my checking it with a voltmeter. He did not have an answer . On the replacing all the ductwork, I paid extra to have R8 insulation, in lieu of, R6. While they were installing the new Junction Boxes I noticed that they were using R6 material. When I confronted the installer they said that they do not make Junction Box material in R8. I came back with my tablet and showed him that R8 is a common material. They immediately removed the old boxes and got R8 insulation Recently I went into the attic and noticed some of the ductwork I told him to tie up better was not done . You have to wonder what else was not done or done improperly. I could not recommend Brown to my community.

Around 4:00 last Thursday afternoon our a/c unit stopped cooling so I called Brown heating and cooling. The receptionist was very friendly and knowledgeable and informed me that she could have a technician to my home Between 5:30 and 6:00 that same evening!!!! yahhh!!! Not only did the technician arrive on time he was early and it was actually the owner of the company.(impressive) After a short inspection of the unit Dale found a wire had shorted out from vibration and rubbing against a coil that in turn blew a hole in the pipe, shorted out the exterior breaker and leaked out all the freon. Dale explained what had happened step by step so I could understand and then he replaced the breaker, welded the blown pipe, fixed and secured the burnt wire and refilled the freon. By 6:30 that evening My old dog of an a/c was blowing Cold Cold air!!! Brown heating and cooling had given my old unit a new life and me a chance to save up for a new one. I will recommend their services over and over. P.s. If you are reading this Dale thank you once again for your great service, kindness and honesty. Sincerely, Melissa Turner

Response from Brown Heating and Cooling
My name is Phil and I am the new Marketing Director for Brown Heating and Cooling. We have expanded our exposure on Angie's List and want to insure that our customers are always satisfied. Having reviewed this incident with our Service Manager, here is our side of the story. Travis went on Service Call 11/01/13 and repaired the unit for a total cost of $314. The unit was running and we don't have any record of a Service Call being ran on 11/15/13 and our Service Manager said he didn't try to sell [Member name removed] a new unit. If [Member name removed] has paperwork showing a quote on a new unit, or a copy of the invoice from Nov. 15th, I would love to take a look at them. We at Brown have a 100% Satisfaction Guarantee and want to make things right. Thank you for your time and [Member name removed] can email me over any paperwork or questions he has at phil@brownhc.com

Very professional and honest. The person who answered the phone and made the appointment was polite and efficient. Came the next day and the serviceman performed the annual service. Very polite, honest and efficient. AC is cooling better and the price was great without any hidden add-ons, plus he did not try to sell us anything else, which we appreciated.

I had a failure of my AC unit. I called Brown to come take a look. They were prompt and provided me with options. I then called a couple of other companies and friends to see if all made sense and the prices were fair. Everything checked out. I did the research and Brown was hard to beat. I had Brown do my repair. Though, I hated dropping $2k into a 5 year old unit that was just barely out of warranty, Brown did an excellant job and fixed it. I have had no problems since. It has been about a month and things are running perfect.
Description of Work: 1) Came out and did a diagnoses of what the failure was. 2) Replaced the compressor on my 5 year old and three month Trane unit.

It was an excellent experience all overall. Would recommend these people to everyone.
Description of Work: Installed an air conditioning package including a 3 1/2 Ton, 13 seer air conditioner with foundation, ductwork and new thermostat. The service people were exellent in efficiency, time taken and explanation of how the thermostat works. They cleaned up so well I hardly knew they were there. They took the old air conditioner and ductwork with them. The price was as estimated. They did an excellent job. They got a county permit for the work and are working with the county for inspection.

I was flabbergasted how good a job they did and how efficiently they did it. I thought I would wait to make sure that it worked before I wrote in a report. We have had moderate temperatures here so I haven't used the heating or the cooling very much, so I thought I would wait. So far, it is fabulous. The weird thing is I never heard of them before. They called up unrequested to find out if we wanted our vents cleaned. Normally, I hang up on people like that because I don't like to be bothered. It just happened that it was about time for us to get new air-conditioning units. The company that did the routine checks on our units wouldn't do that anymore because our units were so old. I needed new units, so I asked Browns to send somebody in. The guy that came in was very nice. We got a couple of other quotes which were higher. I was just amazed at how quickly they came in and did it. They were pleasant and they were businesslike. They did a super job and did it quickly. I was really surprised. I thought they deserved top grades. I really don't know about the price. I checked a couple of other places and they were about the same. I think Brown was in the middle actually. So far, the quality has been wonderful, but it's only been a couple of weeks and we haven't used the units a lot. They were very quick and very responsive. Their professionalism was perfect.
