I contacted Coastal after seeing an ad in the Daytona Beach News Journal. The stucco chimney on my home needed repair and I asked them to give me an estimate for repair. The original quote was for $2100. They agreed to do the work within three days, and asked for half the money for a deposit before starting. They would not begin work until my credit card cleared and the money was deposited in their bank account. A week later when they came to the house, and when the stucco was removed, the entire chimney was damaged. The original builder apparently did not use felt paper prior to applying the stucco and did not properly install the chimney cap and for the past 19 years the chimney leaked. Much of the wood framing on the chimney had rotted and needed to be replaced. I knew this was a possibility so I asked how much it would cost to repair and re-stucco the chimney. I was told that to rebuild the chimney and apply a stucco designed Hardi-Board rather than stucco (which Jeff Mauro, the contractor recommended) would cost an additional $2485.00 Jeff asked for the additional money up-front and began work the next day. I decided I did not want the stucco designed Hardi-Board and asked that lap siding be applied. That would cost an additional $350.00. The work was done in three days. During this time the workers played loud rap music and made a mess removing the stucco. They left rotten wood near the chimney and other debris which I had to clean up. They caulked the seams, but missed several, which I had to re-caulk before painting. They also left roofing nails on the ground which I had to pick up. While I paid for the repair, I felt somewhat over a barrel since I had to negotiate a price after the chimney was opened and exposed my home to the elements. I also believe that because of this situation I was somewhat taken advantage of. The original cost to remove the stucco and re-stucco was $2100 and suddenly to rebuild the chimney and use a non-stucco product the cost doubled. I didn't like the way the price doubled and I couldn't get an itemized invoice for the service, so I have no idea how much the additional materials or labor costs were broken out. I feel like the first $2100 was the true cost to repair the chimney (materials and labor) and that the additional cost were just added on. When I asked about the lap siding, I was told it was going to be "a couple hundred more" and when I pressed Jeff for a price, he said "$350.00" without pricing the cost of the lap siding. I believe that they took advantage of me because of the position I was in having the chimney open and exposed and with no other recourse than to pay them.
