Phipps Masonry

I did quite a bit of research before hiring. Was refered to Phipps Masonry & Stucco for a masonry project and was delightfully surprised by the estimate. A fraction of the price of other contractors. I had a bad leak and they fixed it and put new mortar in my chimney all in a day. Fast workers and easy communication. I'm hiring them to fix some stucco on the side of my house next

I do not recommend Phipps Masonry & Stucco for any type of masonry work. We had received our quote from Chris and then scheduled a time for him to stop by with his foreman Bill to go over the job. This meeting was super awkward. First off, neither Chris, Bill nor Bills wife were wearing masks despite the fact that a global pandemic is going on and that theres a mandatory ordinance to wear masks in Orange County. They seemed oblivious to the fact that my husband and I were wearing masks. Bill kept asking Chris if he had already bid the job. Bill seemed very annoyed and as if he didn't want to do the work. At one point while he was in the carport with the door to the house open, he lit up a cigarette. Chris seemed unphased by this behavior. I was literally in shock. I was seven months pregnant at the time. I should've gone with my gut feeling after that meeting and but I tried to give them the benefit of the doubt due to all of their high reviews. Chris and Bill showed up to our home with another gentleman named Kenny. It didn't appear that they knew each other or had worked together before. Bill kept saying things to Chris like "That's what you get for hiring a brick layer!" All throughout the day Bill was complaining about Kenny. All of the yelling and animosity made for a very uneasy day. That first day they closed up the window opening, one of the doorways and created one of the new doorways. The inside of the house was a complete mess as little had been done to minimize the amount of dust and debris. There was a huge puddle of water and concrete debris in our home as they prepared to leave for the day. Chris said something along the lines of they would clean up after they finished the next day. We were living in our home at the time and have pets so we had to clean up after them. We left the house key for them to continue working while we were at work. What we arrived home to was nothing short of shocking and unacceptable. We arrived home to find two huge openings to our home: the window they were supposed to fill with glass blocks and one of the new doorways. We had discussed with Chris the previous day the boards we had bought to cover up the doorway opening so that we could later install the door. The boards were haphazardly attached to the wet drywall (not the block) and there were large gaps. The window was left wide open. Some old rotten wood boards they found in our yard were leaned up against the window on the exterior of the home but nothing was actually attached to seal up the opening. We hadn't bought boards to cover up this opening since Chris had said he would be able to complete the glass block window that day. Our home was left wide open to the elements, people and animals. Also, because we had two large unsealed openings, the a/c was running full blast when we got home but the temperature was 83 degrees. Once again, the home was a complete mess. The window that was being removed had broken and Chris just left the shards of glass on our living room floor simply stating he "forgot his vacuum". We had left our large shop vac sitting in the room. That night we spent 3.5 hours between buying more boards to properly seal our home and cleaning up the glass and other debris. This was past the point of unacceptable so we decided to terminate our contract with Phipps. We had paid Phipps the deposit prior to the start of work but they claim we owe them more despite the quality of their work and the manner our home was left in. They sent us an email essentially calling us idiots for living in our home during a renovation and not hiring a general contractor. While we don't claim to have any knowledge in masonry, both my husband and I are engineers. I have a masters degree in structural engineering and I am a licensed professional engineer. I would recommend this company to anyone I know, they were helpful in every aspect of my brick staircase project. Grayson helped me understand the scope of the project and the plans for completing it and Christopher was also very helpful in answering all of my questions. I did quite a bit of research before hiring a company, as my house is in a historic district and Phipps Masonry gave me exactly what I expected. Thank you.

The workmanship was excellent. Very professional company. Fair pricing. Many options to choose. Always was kept informed of what was going on before i had to call. I would definitely recommend this company to anyone and i will use them again if need be.

Chris was on time for what I thought was an estimate. He gave me a price that was 1/5th of an estimate I had gotten two weeks earlier. Then he told me he could do the work right then. It was late in the afternoon but he did the stucco repair and did not finish until around 6:30 PM. His work was great. He also told me how I could repair some cracks I had in my stucco. He showed me the product I should use and gave me some pointers. I have recently completed those repairs myself and they look great. Thank you Chris.

Phipps masonry responded to my inquiry about a repair and the same day. After sending photos of damage I received a quote very quickly and two days later, job done. I could not have asked for better service and the workmanship was perfect.

Other companies should take a lesson in customer service that Phipps Masonry has. Christopher was an absolute pleasure to work with. He sent proposal as promised, kept me informed of schedule and he not only showed up as scheduled. He actually showed up early. He is professional and skilled. I don't normally give recommendations, but have no hesitations about Phipps Masonry.

These folks approach the task with professionalism and courtesy. A true pleasure to work with.
