I entered into a services agreement with Land Art on January 30, 2024. Before signing the agreement, I spoke at length with Mr. Baker given the time sensitive nature of this project and received the following statement in writing to alleviate my concerns regarding the open-ended deliverable schedule: “should be about a 1 to 2 month project with our current work load considered.” Our agreement was executed the same day as receiving his assurances and a retainer of $3175.00 was sent to Land Art. In the more than 8 months since, I have yet to receive any deliverables (even in draft form) and the company simply refuses to provide any reasonable expectation for completion. Further, Land Art does not respond to any emails or voicemails once you are under contract. I have sent over a dozen emails and left a comparable number of voicemails requesting an update on the project with no response. After months of trying to resolve these issues, I formally requested the cancellation of our contract in August 2024 pursuant to the relevant sections of our agreement. In the weeks since submitting the request, we have not received an acknowledgement of cancellation or a response to any of our voicemails and emails requesting the same. Most concerning, we have not received an accounting of project expenditures nor payment for the balance of our retainer. Any reasonable professional would apologize for our experience prompting the cancellation (irrespective of fault) and, at the very least, provide prompt guidance for the settlement of our account to avoid further dispute.

It went really well. We have a huge backyard that has a lot of landscaping as well as a pool area, so this is what we had him look at. He followed up with us once afterwards as well. We didn't end up moving forward as we had different priorities. He was very impressive and he spent about an hour at our home total.

Mr. Baker was prompt, personable, and professional. Neither of our houses is a beauty queen, but he had detailed plans for each that would have enhanced the little charm that they do have. About that time our cash reserves dried up, and we were unable to implement his plans. Randall also put us in touch with the producers of the cable program "Fix This House." We did a video audition with one of their associate producers, but, sadly, we were not selected for the show. I guess we're no beauty queens, either!

They came out to look at my property and gave an estimate of what they can do for my yard. They took a lot of measurements for me to have and they told me where areas could be improved. They gave me a great detailed write up through email and a hard copy but it was a little out of my price range. They were trustworthy. We communicated through email a lot and the gentleman that came out was very nice.

Good: Did a good job of assessing the architectural motifs in our house and concept. Terrific engagement with exchange of ideas and concepts as a theme was developed. Great CAD drawings/animations of concept after detailed measurements. Assisted us in working with municipal zoning/permitting process. Aiding in referring us to contractors that could do the job. Asked us about budgetary constraints and reassured that he will our best interest in mind when sourcing supplies and materials. Bad: Final plan was over $100,000 more than our top budget limit. He blamed us on being unrealistic. His plan was drawn without awareness of zoning regulations for our community. Thus 6 months of effort were in vain because almost all key features would have encroached on setbacks and additional hardscape would have exceeded maximum coverage allowed. Instead of starting from scratch he asked that we pursue a zoning exemption which failed, as did a subsequent hardship appeal. After 12 months we still hadn't put a shovel into dirt. Several key hardscape features were sourced from vendors which gave quotes which were wildly higher than estimated. We decided to use the proposed planting plan where ever feasible however our landscaping contractor told us that key boundary trees could not be placed as planned because the architect had misjudged canopy size and subsequent infringement on our neighbors. Very little of what we paid for is of any use.

Response from LAND ART LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTURE
Land Art Landscape Architecture made every effort to respond to the denial of setback variance and re-design the project. The client is hard to get in contact with and does not respond to emails or telephone calls. The clients property is a property that was built with sub standard materials and workmanship and is only five years old. With those sub standards come many repairs, as the contractor began repairs on the roof leak and porch floor leak, etc. those repairs seemed to be added to the project total and the proposed budget grew. I will put emails that were sent to the client following the partial variance denial at the end of this report. The client never responded to these emails and at the time we were prepared and working on alternative designs. Alternative concepts were sent to the client with no response. At our initial meeting with the client they were advised that the existing swimming pool was in disrepair, would cause design issues and it would be more cost effective to demolish the existing and build a new pool. Clients tend to not believe that this can be possible yet in our reviews on Angie's List there is one raving review from a client that did just such and now has a spectacular pool and outdoor living space and can't keep family members from visiting as it is similar to a high end resort, right in their own back yard. Additionally, we have a current project that is finishing construction that the member placed a review on here and their construction costs are coming in at half of the initial bid. There is a process to our work that leads to very happy clients, when a client does not communicate well or insists on deviating from that process the project may have points that are not so satisfying. It is unfortunate that we were given the wrong setbacks from the city, the city admitted that they gave us the wrong setbacks as they thought that the clients property was part of a development that is on the same lake that has lesser setbacks. This was not a disputed fact, the city acknowledge that the setbacks that they gave us were incorrect. The city was moving into their new facility and apparently they were not concentrating on the information that was given to Land Art Landscape Architecture. Again, this is not disputed by the city, they acknowledge that they gave us setbacks from the neighboring community. When we call for setbacks we mark the date, and person that we spoke to on our drawing files so that this is prevented. We sympathize with the client yet when they do not respond to our emails offering to adjust the design we cannot force them to communicate on this. I believe that the condition of the house, its leaks, pealing paint, rotting wood, etc. is a huge contribution to the negative comments that were placed in here by the client. Pink Tabebuia trees do not cause an encroachment issue on the neighboring property. They are not available at every nursery and do come with shipping costs. I imagine that the client's "landscaper" had limited knowledge of plants and their availability. Emails sent to the client after the variance meeting are below: Clients Names, Please understand, we were given the wrong setbacks by the city of Maitland, they acknowledge that they gave us the wrong setbacks as they were thinking you were part of Dommerich Estates. The plans for the front are ready to permit and construct, with the variance for lot coverage being granted there are no changes that will affect the front. The carport will only be able to be "repaired" so the roof pitch will need to remain the same, the column locations will need to remain the same, the roof can be retiled in a light weight fiber tile that resembles the concrete tile of the home. The column wraps can be applied. The lot coverage variance allows this structure to remain. The master suite pergola is also permitted, we will need to make sure that the drawings match the existing column locations. The rear entertainment area design will depend on your willingness to demolish the existing pool and start from scratch, is this an option in your thoughts? And Second Email: Mr. and Mrs. CLIENTS NAME , Although we would have liked for all parts of the variance request to pass, the one vital part did pass without change to the requested square foot of coverage amount. This allows us to place the cabana structure on the property and for the carport to remain and for the front porch to be covered. As you may recall we originally thought to address the carport as a "repair in place" item. When the need for a variance came up due to the setback issue with the cabana and the lot coverage issue we included this in the request with the knowledge that the existing can remain in place until mother nature destroys it according to the City of Maitland. You are still permitted to perform repairs on the existing structure. Bradney, Christine and myself remained for the other variance request and the petitioner changed their request in the meeting to be a request to allow the addition of a 5' high gate to their existing non permitted and non conforming wall, with the knowledge, as directed by the board, to handle the existing wall issues as repair to the existing grandfathered wall. Their caution was to ensure that the repairs are cosmetic, are not structural and that the changes do not exceed $1,000.00 which is Maitland's threshold for permit requirement for a repair. Front Porch - Their approval of the variance request for coverage includes the roofing of the front porch and the addition of the pediment. The obelisk did not require a variance as it is not considered to be permanent, thus we never requested a variance for such. So, the changes to the front are allowed with the approval of the additional lot coverage variance. Carport - The carport can be repaired as long as it is cosmetic ( not structural ) and remains below $1000.00 for the repair. If the repair meets both of these qualifications it will not need a permit. If we do a staged repair process that stages the repairs possibly as shown below each repair may be able to be performed for less than the $1,000.00 limit. As I am unsure of the cost of the shingles we might need to see if the roofer might have some on hand that he could give you a deal on. There is no qualification of time between repairs, thus they can be simultaneous. Example of staged repair: 1st repair: wrap the columns with fiberglass column wraps 2nd repair: repair the roof framework 3rd repair: shingle the carport roof with lightweight polymer shingles such as Davinci Roof shingles. 4th repair: close in the ends of the roof and provide a beam/stringer across and add the cosmetic trim. Master Suite Pergola - The existing columns can be used to begin the staged repairs. These repairs might be staged as follows. 1st repair: secure the posts, add fiberglass column wraps 2nd repair: repair the beam, this should have been a double beam when it was originally constructed 3rd repair: repair the stringers, attaching them to the wall of the house 4th repair : paint the structure, add the porch swing. Of course, all repairs can be performed at once if they are less than $1,000.00 Cabana with fireplace and grilling room and shower room - With the approval of the variance request for the excess square footage of coverage we can build these items, just not in the 10' setback. The cabana can be moved so that the front wall sits on the pool beam, simply sliding it so that the back wall sits on the 10' setback. The fireplace could be adjusted so that it is a two sided fireplace and it sits slightly off of the pool beam. This would allow the existing pool to remain, possibly we add steps out of the pool and into the fireplace area from within the pool on both sides of the fireplace. We would need to change the lighting and electrical outlet arrangement within the building itself as the lights must be 5' off of the wet edge or be fiber optic. This would allow you to utilize the current spa/pool and still have the cabana. The cabana could also be placed on the opposite side of the yard but I think this would block too much of a view from inside the house toward the lake. I am researching some dry stack and gravity wall options that utilize red brick, if there are any. I spoke to Harwood Brick today and will look at a product tomorrow that might work with rebar as support. This would allow us to keep the brick raised lawn as the new wall would not be structural with a footer yet would be dry stack. We can also design an attractive pool that is on central axis with the center of the house, central hallway and then pull the pool house/cabana in five foot so that the back wall sits on the setback line and utilize the space between for deck and mirror the deck on the north side and mirror the fireplace with a pool equipment vault or other pool equipment option. We could also use a sub terrain pool equipment vault and landscape around it. Pool Equipment - Can be placed within a landscape arrangement in a subterranean vault. Alternate option, we can reduce the overhang on the sides of the pool cabana and elongate the building slightly and put the pool equipment in a closet.

Very professional and charming. We just think it is too much money for the design alone, and we were not given a hard estimate on what it would cost to actually carry out the design.
Description of Work: Walked through each part of our yard, listened to our ideas, took photographs, told us some of his ideas, and then a few days later sent us a very detailed list of everything we had mentioned we wanted to do in the yard and broke down the cost to design it in very specific details

Very knowledgeable and professional. Provided ideas or suggestions to enhance the yard and some that would save me money. Within a few days of our consultation I received the proposal to begin the formal designing/planning. Very detailed contract that includes approximately 17 hours to prepare. The cost to have the company design the new landscaping was approximately $1500. Considering I have probably thrown that much money at my yard already for things that did not work out I felt like the cost was reasonable.
Description of Work: 1 hour consultation to landscape front and back yard. Consultation was for information gathering to draw up a proposal to contract to have formalized landscape design/plans drawn that would include materials list and estimated cost for supplies. The plan would incorporate future additions to the yard (e.g., inground pool, new deck) that could be phased in as my budget allowed.

Received the estimate for the design of the landscape and hardscape which was over $4600. The price was well beyond our budget for a design service. Not sure why it cost $175 to give you an estimate only, which most companies will do at no charge.

Overall a very good experience. Randall and his team are very talented at what they do and take great pride in their work. I also found them to be responsive throughout the entire process. Price estimates from a design standpoint were projected to be under budget. Actual costs for work were significantly over budget even after cutting out and changing some beloved design elements. Still turned out beautifully. C'est la vie!

We contacted Land Art Landscape after reading the reviews on Angie's List. Randall Baker and his associate were very prompt with following up and setting an appointment. to meet with us. At the meeting, we explained our thoughts regarding our back yard, front yard, and potential pool design. We were hoping to get a pool design, front and backyard landscape plan, extra parking, as well as privacy and screening. After the initial meeting, Mr. Baker provided us with references from completed projects. We were very impressed with the finished work and the many positive comments from the homeowners. Land Art Landscape then designed a plan for our home. I can't find words to describe the amazing concept that was presented to us!!! Our home is located in Thornton Park, in the historic district, and is a simple Mediterranean style home. The design that was created not only blends in with the architecture, but enhances the overall appearance of the home. The design is above and beyond anything that an ordinary pool or landscape company could come up with. We are frugal with our investments, but can't wait until we see the finished project!!! I can't say anything but positive words for Randall Baker and Land Art Landscape Architecture. Very professional, responsive, creative, and realistic in their approach. I would highly recommend them to anyone!

The designers met with us to determine elements we wanted built into this backyard. We wanted a tree big enough to sit under to read. We wanted a surface for our grandchildren to play upon. We really enjoy birds and butterflies. We didn't want any palms nor any plants poisonous to kids or pets nor a problem to the environment. We asked for bushes and trees that bloomed in different seasons. And purple is a favorite color. The designers took about a month to come up with a design after constant conversations about potential trees and plants. Finally they were ready with our plan, We were blown away by the design. They presented a three dimensional computer program that allowed us to virtually walk around the house and through elements of the design. We saw some things we weren't sure about and the estimated cost of application was double the original suggested amount of $18,000. The designers were accommodating. They changed what we wanted changed by reducing the size of some trees and size and quantity of bushes and plants. They provided large scale plans for us to use at our homeowners landscaping committee meeting. They recommended a landscape installer which we used. He was a blessing and a joy to work with in finishing the installation. He was capable of installing the hard scape and the plant scape. He was experienced in pond installations including plumbing and wiring. He also helped us further reduced the cost by helping us find a beautiful but much cheaper paver. He also helped us choose the right tree for the reading area. I am commenting on him because the designers couldn't say enough good about him.
Description of Work: First I need to state that this is a designing company; they do not install landscaping. People visiting our new backyard landscaping receive a WOW encounter. Our large empty backyard with two small oak trees was transformed into an eye catching experience. We have over 2000 sq feet of artistically designed pavers that allow our young grandchildren the space to ride tricycles or baby walkers around a tree, around a boulder, and off to the pond. A thousand gallon fish pond is a highlight of our new backyard with blooming water lilies and other pond plants. Several neighbors have positively commented on the pleasant sound of falling water they can hear on their porches. The yard is awash in color with a variety of different seasonal blooming flowers. It will take several seasons to experience the real beauty of this garden for all the bushes and trees to grow into maturity. But the butterflies and dragonflies have already found their nectar grounds.

The complete job, exceeded my expectations. I did however; go over budget. It went well and i can't wait for the whole job to look as if its been here forever; which is close!
Description of Work: Inital job of the architect was for design purposes; which was a deal for Angie's list customers. Randell, the architect; paid close attention to what i needed and wanted, which was little to no work for me; and he came up with a plan; which blew me away. I had required to have total privacy in the rear of my home; due to a community being built behind me. Randell thereafter, secured a wonderful landscaper. Jeff, who with his crew; made Randell; and my vision happen; to my delight. A real gentlemen; who also listened to my needs. He is hands on. I cannot be happier with the results. I am 99% done; I just can't help myself for adding on to other areas; its just so beautiful.

He drew up a new plan and the final work was done just recently. He is an excellent architect; he plans well, he gives you computer-generated pictures and a blueprint, and he is willing to make several plans until you are satisfied. The only problem is that he doesn?t return communication in a very timely manner. The price was reasonable.

We contracted him for landscape architechture to devise a plan for our lakefront home in the back and front of our house. When we saw the other places he has done, we told him that we did not want that same type of plan for our home. We clearly stated what we wanted, a simple, Florida-based plan with a pool and landscaping, for this job. The contract reflected the clients desires. It seemed as though he listened and knew what we wanted. We signed the conract and paid 50% in August. He was then to email us a conceptualized plan in 3-D. We told him that his emailed plan proposals were not what we contracted for. We were in a process of working with the design revisions between the client and the landscape architech. He elected to come over to our hosue during the end of October or beginning of November 2009 and we spent 3.5 hours working on the proposal. The next time we heard from him was when a plan appeared on our doorstep on December 19 in the evening without any previous notification. This plan was not what we wanted! We called him immediately, at 10pm because we had not yet approved the plan. We were still in the process of reaching the design for the plan. In the process of emailing, there was no completed plan at all. At this time, he mentioned billing us for 85% of the work completed. I contested the statement at that time. He admitted that the plans he completed were not authorized by us, and we did not have to pay the bill he was sending us at that time, so we did not pay the January bill at his instruction. We had him come over again on January 26, and we spent over 3.5 hours with him. Again he wrote massive notes on this plan proposal. He then showed up with two contractors to bid on the job, unannounced to us. As he left on January 26, 2010, he was going to make the proposal corrections and send them to us. At this point, he has billed us for the plans, the paper work, and 85% of the job on the original bill. We received a second bill, with a late fee on February 13. I called him back and left another message that night asking why we were sent this bill. I followed that up with at least one additional phone call. He did not respond to any phone calls. He then sent us an email on Friday February 19, at 10:31am. We responded to this email. On our contract, it clearly states "upon customer acceptance, prepare construction to documents, to reflect the apporved conceptual design". We have not approved a plan. I then received an email on March 1 accusing us of breach of contract. This email also stated that if we have not paid the conteseted fees he would send us to collections and terminate the contract at the end of this week. We are contesting the fee because we have not agreed to plan. He said to me "approval is a grey area, you have to understand a process". We want to compelte thsi plan, and we have no problem paying him, however we are not happy with his plan proposal at this point in time. We feel as though we are being manipulated and threatened with collections into paying a bill for work that is not completed. We are contesting thsi bill

This client changed her mind many times, wanting to add a spa, wanting to add a spa cabana, wanting to add an infinity edge to the pool design, and more. Upon each requested change client was advised that this would be outside of her construction budget. The client insisted on these additions to the concept indicating that she understood the budget issues. The concept was revised three times based upon the client's changing desired items. The third concept she indicated was perfect. Client is held up on the word “authorized”, and does not understand the design process, simply stated, just because a plan is printed on paper does not mean that it is the final plan. In the end it was discovered that the client thought that she should not have to pay her bill as, Bank of America canceled her Home Equity Line of Credit, and therefore, she did not have the financing to build her pool. It is unfortunate that the client was not interested in paying her bill as indicated in her contract with Land Art Landscape Architecture. Although Land Art progressed and finished her project prior to her paying her past due bill, it is not a regular practice to provide services to clients who have past due invoices. The client finally paid her past due invoice and was delivered her final plans. I would suggest that Angie’s List review this client’s account as she indicated that it took nine granite countertop companies to install her counter top properly and was complaining about a fence company, a paver installer who installed her driveway. This may be a client who is involved in complaining to try to get a discount or who is just unable to please.

We first heard about Landart Landscape Architecture and Randall Baker from co-workers who had used his company. They praised the quality and vision of his work. Before calling LALA we had various subcontractors come to give us ideas for building in our grill, a firepit or fireplace, and adding a spiral staircase to our existing balcony. We live on a lake and keeping the view open was very important to us. Randall drew up several options, going beyond our limited ideas, and we were sold. We ended up demolishing our existing pool, adding features such as bubblers, swim shelf, planters, laminar lighting, uplighting, downlighting, summer kitchen with a pizza oven, a wisteria-like purple flowering vine-covered trellis, beautiful travertine deck with rounded steps and nooks and crannies, firepit with a gas ingniter, and the most gorgeous landscaping plants and trees you could ever imagine. All maintaining the views of the lake. Randall was always available by phone, and made frequent trips to check on the project, as well as just to take a peek or some photos. He made sure every single detail was right, and interacted with the subs on a very knowledgeable and helpful way. Randall was ahead on every phase of our project; his interest didn't end when when his drawings were submitted.....he stayed in touch with the past, current, and future workers to make sure everyone knew what to do. We now have a beautiful, blooming, layered, vibrant, frequently-visited backyard 'aquatic zone'. Our friends are anxious to use this talented landscape designer, landscape architect, hardscape designer. He can do it all, and he is the best.
Description of Work: How to begin our praise of Randall Baker's work? He is exceptional. A talent and professionalism that far exceeded our expectations. His dream of a design made our backyard the only place we want to be. He led us through a process that proved how knowledgeable he is. Randall's friendliness in the process cemented a desire for longterm projects using his company. As a landscape designer, he is beyond belief. He listens, and then dazzles. Not to be showy, but to create beautiful, user-friendly project (we will have many plants with day and night blooms, scents, and foliage, and the summer kitchen he designed is spectacular. As a landscape architect, he combines all the elements of design....lighting, plants, buildings, function, purpose. He helped us find quality sub-contractors for the hardscaping: travertine pavers and materials. He knows the quality work and workers, and makes sure that everything is perfect.

Randall supervised everything....very, very detailed! He is picky and demands the utmost best from those installing and fulfilling his designs. If you are at a loss with your landscaping or pool design, this is the company to call.
Description of Work: Randall, through his expertise, designed a stunning and functional landscape for both the front and the back of our new construction home. The cost for his services provided a detailed design for the landscape, entry/driveway, and pool (and it's surrounding areas). The money was well spent. This man is very good at what he does and really knows his plants. Our entry is stunning thanks to this company.

THANK YOU FOR TAKING THE TIME REFLECT ON YOUR EXPERIENCE WITH LAND ART LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTURE AND TO POST YOUR FEEDBACK REGARDING OUR COMPANY ON ANGIE'S LIST. AS IT IS VERY HARD FOR US TO EXPLAIN TO POTENTIAL CUSTOMERS THE TRUE VALUE IN A SOLID LANDSCAPE DESIGN BY A LICENSED LANDSCAPE ARCHITECT, YOUR RESPONSE AND ADDRESSING THE VALUE FOR THE PRICE OUTCOME IS HIGHLY APPRECIATED. AS WE DESIGN WITH THE RIGHT PLANT FOR THE RIGHT LOCATION, CONSIDERING ROOT COMPATIBILITY AND ENVIRONMENTAL EXPOSURE AMONG OTHER FACTORS AS OPPOSED TO THE "PUSHING PLANTS" METHOD OF BUSINESS THAT CUSTOMERS OFTEN ENCOUNTER WITH OTHER COMPANIES, IT IS HARD TO COMMUNICATE THAT A "FREE" DESIGN MAY BE HARMFUL TO A PROJECT AND SIMPLY WASTE MONEY. AS THE DESIGN PLAN SET OF DRAWINGS THAT WE PRODUCED FOR YOU PROBABLY SITS IN A CLOSET OR FILE CABINET NOW THAT YOUR PROJECT IS COMPLETED, IT IS HUMBLING THAT YOU TOOK THE TIME TO POST YOUR FEEDBACK ABOUT LAND ART LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTURE AND TO COMMUNICATE THE VALUE OF THAT DESIGN TO THE ANGIE'S LIST COMMUNITY. IT IS FLATTERING TO HEAR YOUR COMMENTS THAT YOUR HUSBAND, CHILDREN, FAMILY AND HOUSE GUESTS HAVE REGARDING YOUR POOL AND LANDSCAPE. I KNOW THAT YOU HAD SPOKE TO MANY PEOPLE AND RECEIVED PROPOSALS FROM MANY OTHERS, YET YOU CHOSE LAND ART LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTURE OUT OF THAT GROUP, THANK YOU FOR ALLOWING US TO WORK ON YOUR PROJECT.
