Description of Work: My understanding is that this is a franchise and each person's experience may different depending on who they use. After purchasing our first home, I was very excited to furnish it but was also under a time crunch since we were also expecting our first child. Not having much experience with interior decorators and doing some online research, I decided to using Decorating Den. Although they do not charge a decorating fee, in retrospect the prices we paid for furniture was far more than what we would have paid for comparable quality at any store (I am assuming the decorator gets a commission from the sale). Since all of our items were picked from a catalog or from pictures, we had no idea on scale. Trusting our designer, It was disappointing to have furniture delivered that was far too large for our 1930s homes. Quite honestly, if we could have returned almost all of it, we would have but once you commit you loose 15% to a restocking fee (which maybe I should have done). We are already considering buying new items, only a year out. I would suggest anyone using this service to get personal referrals from whomever they chose as well as try and see the furnishings in person.

Adman came to meet me, reviewed my home, we talked about projects/ She returned with fabrics and designs, very nice presentation. The final product was lovely.
The window treatments, furniture, carpets, etc, began to arrive approximately 7-8 weeks after I ordered them. As they were being installed, numerous errors and problems came to light - all of which occurred because of Ms. Halperin's carelessness, negligence, and/or lack of knowledge. The complete list of problems is too long to provide here; this is a small sample: ordering chandeliers without enough chain or wire to hang them; installing a custom-made foyer rug with the wrong design, not recognizing unmatched striped patterns in window swags - TWICE; incorrectly measuring for a floor runner, a bedspread, and transom windows; not recognizing that window treatments on and quot;the sunny sideand quot; of the house required an interlining; not understanding how to cut striped fabric for a swag so that the integrity of the striped pattern would not be lost. In addition to making numerous amateur design errors, Ms. Halperin did not conduct herself or her business in a professional manner. Examples of this are: consistently arriving late for appointments; refusing to substantiate her claims of preferred vendor savings being passed on to me; not providing monthly statements; refusing to provide prices for wallpaper while deliberately charging me for excessive rolls; ordering and installing window treatments other than the ones I ordered; charging me $250 for a floor plan and then ignoring it when she selected furniture and accessories for that room; asking for payment before it was due; threatening to take me to court; inappropriately charging me $3,120.00 in and quot;design timeand quot; claiming I did not spend enough money. As this franchise owner was not acting in good faith and refused to mediate or arbitrate with the Consumer Protection Division, I was forced to sue Beautify My World, Inc., Adrian Halperin, president (DBA Decorating Den Interiors) in small claim court. On May 24, 2012, in Civil Case No. 0601-0004485-2012, the District Court of Maryland for Montgomery County ruled in my favor and ordered this Decorating Den franchise to pay me $4,928.29. Adrian Halperin appealed that decision and on September 6, 2012, in Civil Case No. 8535-D, the Circuit Court of Maryland for Montgomery County reduced my judgment to $3,868.75. That amount, plus court costs and interest was to be paid to me by October 6, 2012; however, Ms. Halperin didn't pay the judgment amount until November 5, 2012. As of November 15, 2012 she still hasn't paid me the required interest and court costs. In some circles a person like this would be known as a deadbeat. Adrian Halperin claims my review of her services contains false statements; yet when I asked her to identify what was untruthful, she was unable to provide any details to support her inflamatory allegations. Instead, she had her attorney write to Angie's List alleging that my review and quot;is full of false characterizations of Ms. Halperin's businessand quot; and to remove my review and quot;due to the false statements contained therein.and quot; Ms. Halperin's legal counsel informed Angie's List my review should be taken down within 10 days because and quot;it is not providing the correct information to your clients.and quot; These are unjustified demands and they amount to nothing more than a lame attempt at bullying. In reality, my review is providing exactly the correct information to Angie's List members.
Description of Work: In December 2010, I engaged the Decorating Den franchise owner, Adrian Halperin, to decorate my new home in Frederick, MD - a project that took over one year to complete. She claimed that using Decorating Den's nation-wide preferred vendors results in saving that are passed along to the customer. Because of this, I believed I would be paying fair retail prices for furniture, window treatments, and accessories. This was not always true. Although she is not a certified interior designer, Adrian Halperin charges the certified hourly rate. This gave me the impression that her abilities and results would be equal to those of certified professionals in the interior decorating trade. Unfortunately, I found out the hard way that this assumption was wrong. Ms. Halperin claims to be "appropriately licensed for my industry"; but the Montgomery County Licensing Department states she is NOT licensed - even though she is required to be because she is in retail sales. I have used interior decorators/designers for 4 homes in 2 states over a period of 25 years. I can attest that Ms. Halperin's customer service level is sub-standard and I registered this complaint with her. It is quite clear to me that she is much more interested in the sales side of the industry than the service side.
