I hired Isaac (others call him "Ike") to do tree trimming, new sprinkler system install, weed eating/clean up of my yard, as well as installing new sod. We purchased a foreclosure that sat vacant for years, so you can imagine what the yard looked like before we hired Isaac. Isaac came by and we discussed what needed to be done and he recommended leaving a number of what he called "plants" and he would make them look nice and manicured. He required 50% of the amount for the project up front ($1937.50) and we gave him a check. The contract he provided was very vague and stated "weed eating in areas discussed, trim the trees discussed, the basic cleanup". It didn't spell out specifically what was to be done. He seemed like an honest, good guy so I assumed we had an understanding of what needed to be done. Hindsight is 20/20 but man was I wrong. He came out the next day for a few hours and trimmed some trees and did some clean up and weed eating in the front and the sides. In the process of trimming the trees, he damaged our neighbor's fence. He came out later and fixed that but it could've easily been avoided but Isaac doesn't use rope or any professional tools to remove tree limbs. The next day I called Isaac and expressed to him that some of the trees in the back were not trimmed and therefore had concerns about my screened in pool enclosure going up. Isaac said he'd come by the next day and look. He came by the next day and didn't say a word and left. I had to contact him again and he said he didn't see any trees that would be a problem. I sent him a copy of the screen dimensions and he finally agreed to come back later and trim those trees. A few weeks later I contacted him as they were starting to make preparations to put the enclosure up. Isaac came with a professional this time and they removed the trees. I expressed some frustration with Isaac about how the back yard was still overgrown with weeds and plants and was curious if he was done in the front and side yard cleanup as it didn't look as manicured as he described when he gave me a quote. He basically said he finished the front and side clean up and its my job to get it maintained. A few days later I received an HOA warning letter for my overgrown lawn. Isaac stated that he couldn't do anything in the back until the pool builders were done and did their final grade. He assured me that most if not all of those weeds and plants would be taken out by the pool company with their final grade. He said to keep him updated about the pool progress and then he will return. On 9/27 the pool builders were starting their final grade. I went out there and asked about the weeds and plants being removed and they said they didn't know why the landscaper would tell me that as it was not true. I called Isaac and he quickly said to refer to the contract and that's why he put on there that he's just weed eating some areas. About an hour later, our fence installer contacted us and said that he needed to install the fence next Thursday and couldn't do it without those weeds and plants in the back being removed. I contacted Isaac again told him what the fence installer said and that I needed a resolution to this done ASAP. After a couple of hours with no response, I texted Isaac and told him that after reviewing the contract I was going to contact other contractors to finish the back and remove the weeds/plants. Isaac also didn't quote me for sod in the backyard and said once the pool was done we could discuss a cost for that. I also let Isaac know that I'd find other contractors for a quote for that. I asked that he please let me know what work he had completed so far and a dollar amount of what was completed of the $1937.50 that I paid him upfront. I also stated that if he did not respond back in a timely manner that I would contact the BBB, Angies List, etc. He immediately texted back and said he would call me in a few days. I then texted him and said that the fence installer needed this done ASAP and that perhaps it would be better to just scrap the project all together and provide me with a dollar amount of what is owed back to me since this is becoming a big headache. I received no response back from Isaac. On 9/30 I called and texted Isaac as he said he would call back in a couple of days. He texted me back and stated that he didn't appreciate being threatened (by saying I'd contact BBB, and other contractors), and that I broke the contract. I asked him how I threatened and broke the contract. I also told him that I was willing to try and work this out with him to finish the job and apologized that I upset him. I also reminded him that I paid him $1937.50 and he quoted me $1200 for the clean up/tree trimming/weeding portion of the project and he didn't do anything else so I'm owed money. I received no response back from him. I also received a call on 10/1 from our pool builder that we likely won't pass the electrical install due to the height of the weeds on the side of the house that Isaac supposedly already did. I have to find someone to correct his work now.
