Poor storage practices - crushed furniture yielding a great deal of broken items; poor temperature control and coverage (protection) of furniture leading to mold and dirt; >$5000 in absolute loss

Called on April 9, asking for a quote. Discussed needs and situation. I was hoping to hire muscle for Friday or Saturday (April 11 or 12) but was told no one was available on either of those dates, but was offered muscle for Sunday morning, 9 am. He offered that for a flat fee of $300, 3 men would show up and work 2 hours (I figured it wouldn't take any longer than that). They arrived at 8:45. I came down, they introduced themselves, and I unlocked the POD. They got right to work, in assembly line fashion with one man staying at the POD, one man hauling a load from the POD to the second floor, and the third man hauling the rest of the way up and into the apartment. I directed them where to put items (easy -- boxes there, furniture here, bed pieces in the bedroom). After 1-1/2 hours, they were done hauling stuff up and offered to put the bed together. Of course, I agreed, since there was still a half hour left. I wasn't sure if they'd get it done in time, but to their credit, they did (they said they put beds together all the time, even ones like our monster of a king-size adjustable bed). I was thoroughly impressed with their hard work and lack of complaining at having to haul stuff up 3 flights of stairs.

As mentioned before this was not our first move but this was the first time a quote has been off by a considerable amount. We had gotten several quotes from different companies and went with A Royal Moving basically due to the fact that they came in $1,000.00 less than the rest. I find it quite interesting that when all was said and total cost was almost identical to the quotes we'd received from the other companies. In speaking with Jim (who personally came out and walked through our home then gave the quote) one of the first things he said was "I don't under quote." In the midst of the stress of moving one does not need something like this on top of everything else. On top of this the additional charges involved in the second transaction involved clerical errors which in order to resolve required us making an unneeded trip across town.
