Five Star Pool

We first met Roman Huf, the owner of Five Star Pool, in 2017. Over the next two years, we got estimates and input from several construction, screen, and pool companies before finally deciding, conceptually, what we wanted to build. Roman came out two or three times and patiently helped us come up with a plan that turned out better than we could have expected. We liked Roman from the very beginning and our confidence grew with each visit. He seemed to have a clear idea of how to create what we wanted. He is very positive, agreeable, and knows his business. We finally started construction in January 2020. They had to remove the old decking, all the pavers and coping around the pool. They built the walls for the new porch, laid the rebar, poured cement, and filled the interior porch space with compacted dirt. The old worn pavers, with grass growing through the cracks, were replaced by large, smooth travertine tiles, as was the porch. They installed new pool tiles and each piece of coping was handcut and laid into place. When we first talked to Roman, it was about the construction of the porch/patio/pool coping only. I told him one day that we would have to make sure he coordinated with whomever we had do the screening project. We hadn’t picked anyone yet. He asked me what kind of screened porch we wanted, so I found a picture on Houzz and sent it to him. He came back within a day or two with a proposal that we considered reasonable, so we contracted with him to build the screened enclosure. He sub-contracted the work to Tampa Screens & Aluminum, Inc. and they had the screened porch up in three days. We are absolutely thrilled with the way everything turned out! There were minor hiccups along the way, but everything was resolved to our satisfaction. We also have to confess that, after watching this whole process—the amount of man-hours, labor, and skill that went into this project—we feel like we got our money’s worth. I will also add that the employees who we talked with were satisfied with the company. They are full-time, skilled employees with decent benefits. They were conscientious, professional, and polite. Chris built the porch almost single-handedly and should the hurricane of the century hit, we are quite sure our porch will still be standing when everything else is gone! Thank you also to Andrew, Lenka, Carlos, and all the others who did a great job! We are also pleased with the work that Tampa Screens did. The enclosure is solidly built. We are working out a couple small issues with them at the moment, but they have been responsive. We are of the opinion that FIVE STAR POOL is appropriately named. I selected this company after much research and good reviews....I made the wrong selection. This company is a disaster and does not support the customer nor stand behind their service. The subs are incompetent when they do finally show up. A drain hose was left in the pool during the acid wash process leaving a large line in new Stonescape finish of the pool. Andrew, the project manager, agreed to drain and acid wash again to remove the line. Once that was done, the subs did not acid wash properly and the pool is discolored and splotchy. We immediately contacted Andrew and waited three days for a response. The pool was drained yet again and that was three weeks ago. The pool is sitting empty and while Andrew is away, the owner Roman came out. Roman has indicated there was scaling in the pool and he would bring manufacturer over. We've now had two cancelled appointments from the rep who has been a no show and Roman is blaming the scaling on us and saying they will not do anything about it. We contacted Five Star immediately after the pool was filled because the finish was completely splotchy and incorrect. We are sitting with an empty pool and no where close to Five Star stepping up to fix the problem they created by leaving a drain hose in the pool. We began the process in March and it's now August with no resolution in sight. STAY AS FAR AWAY FROM THIS COMPANY AS POSSIBLE.

Its no small project to find the right company to re surface your pool. We looked at many. Roman and his staff were professional from the beginning. He came to our house, took the measurements, asked many questions and had an estimate with options back to us within 48 hours. He gave us the options of finish. We were impressed with his previous reviews and decided to move forward. I am so glad we did. We chose the Pebbletech finish he recommended. There was clear communication on each step. The site was kept clean and the staff were professional. Its been about a month now and our pool looks beautiful.

Roman came out and gave me a bid that was fair and reasonable. He offered good suggestions and was able to think of some things I had not thought of doing. We took out the old tile, installed new tile and coping. We reconfigured a spa into a sun shelf. We had pavers put in, a screen enclosure added, new porch roof installed and the front entrance way texturized to look like stone. We added a new salt water filtration system and a pipe was put in that allowed me to have a faucet installed on the side of my house that had no faucet.

The service went well. I researched them over a year ago, but wasn't able to follow through at that time. They honored the estimate from last year and gave me a discount for referring their service. They had several references and I was able to go look at pools that they had previously worked on. They did an excellent job and were always professional. The supervisor checked on the work almost every day. He knew exactly what was going on with the job. I am very pleased with the end result.

All the teams that were there were very well organized. Andrew, the supervisor, was amazing and was here everytime the workers were there. It was nice having someone take care of the work. Every team that had different tasks to do were pleasurable, clean, nice and professional. I was so happy to have contracted them. It was a very good experience for me because it was done right.

The company did excellent work. They constantly showed a concern for quality. Roman, the head of the company, actually listened to us and designed the pool that we requested which was not always true of other companies. They stayed in constant communication, so we were always apprised of what was taking place and what was upcoming. The entire team was extremely friendly and easy to work with. The pool and patio deck are beautiful. The screen enclosure design was clever and effective. We have been very pleased with the overall experience of contracting with Five Star Pool.

This is the second time we've used Five Star. It can be stressful to have work done on your home, from selecting the right contractor, to making multiple decisions, color, style, design and much more. Roman, Andrew and Lenka and the entire team are easy to work with and extremely helpful, but most of all they deliver what they promise. The attention to detail and follow up is excellent. The installation team led by Jay worked hard to meet deadlines and are vey good at whatthey do. We would not hesitate to hire Five Star again. RJD

TL:DR - Use these guys. They do solid work at very reasonable rates. I have already recommended them to two friends who are also wanting work done. Five Star Pool was one of 3 companies I contacted for quotes to resurface our pool, do a saltwater conversion, and do a full paver pool deck along with paver additions to our home. Roman Huf (the owner) came out and was quite courteous and professional. He didn't spitball any estimates either - he measured off everything quite carefully to ensure accuracy on the initial quote. More importantly, their quote came in 40% lower than the next closest quote I received, and was quite reasonable for the work being done. I got the feeling some other companies considered our job 'too small' and over-quoted us just to see if we'd be dumb enough not to shop them - not the case at all with Five Star Pool. The process from there was easy. We scheduled time to go in and pick out styles/patterns - anything with an up-charge was very clearly discussed, and we were not pushed towards any of them (and were quite happy with the selection available at the quoted prices). We were told 4-6 weeks to start the project, but were able to get things started in just 2. The process from there took 3-4 weeks total, and went fairly seamlessly. They utilize a separate project manager to oversee the entire project, and he did a great job overall of keeping things moving right along. We did hit some minor snags along the way regarding scheduling delays due to expected payments that we could not have produced any quicker (sent the check the next day!) - but this was relatively minor. We also had a bit of a misunderstanding regarding lighting options we wanted - and I got concerned we were going to have to pay for the wrong fixture - but Roman called and got things smoothed over and fixed the problem. Overall, I would highly recommend. The attention to detail displayed by most of their subcontractors was impeccable, and they did a great job of listening to what we wanted and ensuring we were happy. I can't tell you how important it is to have extremely detailed installers for jobs like this - no one wants crooked tile or coping - and the end result is beautiful.

Very Pleased, Great Job. In November/December 2017 we decided to have our pool deck and lanai resurfaced. Selecting a contractor and deciding the details of a project is always difficult and can be frustrating. We received several quotes to resurface with cement pavers as well as travertine. We decided to go with travertine and selected 5 Star Pools, and we are very glad we did. Roman Huff and his Team; Andrew, Lenka and all the installers were a pleasure to work with. From the start we had a good feeling, Roman is very personable and easy to work with, he made many suggestions, gave us ideas, and helped us plan and make our final selection. We felt like the 5 Star team was part of the project and not just doing a job. When we encountered issues, all projects have them, the response was always positive. We would hire them again and in fact we are, we decided to redo our driveway and walkway with cement pavers in February.

I called to get an estimate on having my pool deck replaced and was told they don't travel to New Tampa to do work.

I had five start pool refinish my pool this year. The pool was marcite and we had it refinished inpebble tec. We also converted it from chlorine to salt. The owner, Roman Huf, came out to give me a quote. He explain all the steps involved. Once we started work, his crew was professional and friendly answering my questions. The pool looks great and I recommend five start pool. A few months later the salt cell started leaking. With a couple of text messages, five start pool got me a replacement under warranty.

We contacted 3 pool companies when searching for a pool contractor to build us a pool. Roman was the only contractor who actually listened to what we wanted and quoted us exactly for the specifications that we provided him. He used all high quality items in his quote and was pleasantly surprised top of the line water pump and filter used. He came out to our location, viewed where the pool was to be constructed, measured everything out, drew a rough diagram of what we wanted, and turned around a quote quickly. We made several changes after viewing the quote and added some items and removed some items and Roman was able to make adjustments to the quote and quickly let us know the changes to the quote. We decided to go with 5 Star Pools because of the fact that Roman actually listened to what we want and how quickly he responded to our questions. Once construction started, we did run into some complications with the water table and a lot of extra work had to be accomplished. Once the pool was formed, the rest of the construction went smoothly and quickly. Roman and the project manager, Andy, were very accessible and returned calls quickly. Our pool looks amazing and we are enjoying every moment in it. We highly recommend using 5 Star Pools.

It went very well. I paid extra to have an area cleared away so that the coping would adhere properly, 4 years later it is coming off. They said that they would come out to repair it for $1100 when other people would do it for much less. This is frustrating as I had originally paid more when they did the remodel to make sure that this wouldn't be a problem in the future.

It went very well. The work went as scheduled. Roman and crew were very knowledgeable, responsive, and polite. The pool looks brand new now. Pebble finish looks great. I would definitely consider Five Star Pool again if needed in the future.

Terrible. No follow up and unresponsive

We decided to start work after the first of the year, permits were ready to begin in mid-January. The start was fast, as most construction jobs, empty the pool, remove pavers, dig a ditch from the pump to where the spa would be installed. Next, the outline of the spa was dug out, and new piping was laid in place. Inspection for the piping took a little longer than expected (County Inspectors) but once that was done, the concrete could be poured for the spa. Though we requested a 4-6 person spa, it turned into a 6-8 person spa, which was fine. The coping and tile workers showed up next at the beginning of February to update those areas, they were very skilled and did a great job (a lot of flying dust, not the best cleaning up after themselves). The next big evolution was pouring in the new pebble tec bottom into the pool and spa. At first it seemed much lighter than what we picked out but it was explained to me that it would "cure" and become darker and it has. After about a week we were able to put water in the pool, but only chlorine, no salt (and we have a salt system. We were required to brush the sides and bottom and maintain certain chemistry parameters. The process did slow down and there were more county inspections for the electrical and door/window alarms. After those we were able to get final approval. There was an issue with some of the nozzles in the spa and it turned out that they were clogged with debris and had to be cleaned out. We are happy with the outcome and would do business with Five Star Pool in the future. Andy is an excellent project manager and will answer your texts and phone calls anytime day/night.

Five star pool did an amazing job! We dealt with several different associates during the job and they were all friendly, professional, efficient, and most importantly, great at what they did! They got the job done in just a matter of days. They were very responsive and wanted to ensure I was happy with the job. Will definitely use them for my pool resurfacing in the future.

This company did a great job with the pool and the deck. Everything looks beautiful. They were honest and the people doing the work were professional and courteous. There will be a wait once you sign a contract and make a down payment until the work begins, because of other projects being done. They will let you know approximately how long the wait will be, but once they begin they move ahead pretty quickly.

Better than we expected. Initially the entire bottom of the pool was planned to be repaired/replaced. Once old fiberglass removal began they discovered whomever did the last work had not used any bonding surface behind the fiberglass. It came off in sheets the size of plywood. The result was over 95% of the pool surface had to be replaced instead of just a damaged bottom. It cost an extra $750 for labor and supplies for more than 50% extra work. We literally paid to fix someones shoddy work. Five Star Pool did not take advantage when they easily could. Total cost: $5,560.75. The workers were fabulous. Very professional. Cleaned up at the end of every day. The new liner is immaculate. The pool is very inviting and sparkles like diamonds. We've discussed repainting the deck because now it looks dingy next to our brand new pool. The new finish will last 15 - 20 years. We were advised to drain and apply a new gel coat after 10 years. We are thoroughly pleased!

Perfect. Excellent quality. Finished job quickly

Each phase involved different crews, meaning we saw a variety of workman over the 2 1/2 week period. Each crew showed up the day after the previous crew had completed their work which meant that there was no wasted downtime. The workman in each crew had different responsibilities and each knew their's. Thus the progress was efficiently completed with no repetition necessary. They did not bother us at all during the project. Our only interface was with the PM. We would periodically watch their workmanship, but they were oblivious and continued on.
