Craftsmen services remodeled our master bath, starting with replacing drywall, flooring, shower with custom tile work, vanity and light installation. The entire team was a joy to work with and were very accommodating with our changes and schedule. The quality of the work was spot on and the price excellent. I highly recommend Craftsmen.

We got about four quotes and we felt most comfortable with Craftsmen. It was a great decision as they are very good at what they do. Very friendly, professional and quick. I have had many contractors over the years and was shocked at how fast they get the job done. Very high quality as well.

Craftsmen Services totally transformed our home and we couldn't be happier!! They helped us design the new layout, select solid vendors, and provided 4 months of labor and a great value for today's rates. Craftsmen removed 2 walls and shuffled the whole kitchen layout to open things up. They quickly fixed some unexpected plumbing problems and replaced every square foot of flooring on our first level with new hardwood floors. We appreciated working with a family company that worked with integrity and gave honest answers about alternatives. They provided regular updates, and always responded to our questions with throughout the process.

We would absolutely highly recommend the Craftsman team with no reservations! This was our first time doing renovations on our kitchen and it was a stressful prospect for us. The Craftsman team were professional and attentive to detail, willing to work with us carefully to make selections for the cabinets, their precise color tints, granite and splash guard tiles. They were timely and trustworthy in their work and workmanship. Their price was reasonable and competitive given the quality of materials used and the quality of workmanship. We especially love their handmade and carved wooden kitchen cabinets which are truly a work of art! Our new kitchen is elegant and functional -- and exactly what we wanted. It was a pleasure dealing with all members of the Shepard family!
Description of Work: New hand crafted shelves, granite countertop and splashguard
Craftsmen Service Company was very helpful all along our remodel journey. From the initial consult and brainstorming to designing the layout (with computer renderings), to the physical work and then the finishing touches, CSC was very polite, professional and thorough. Their mobile showroom (trailer with 6 mini-kitchens of various styles) was very helpful in picking what we liked. Work was started reasonably fast, completed on time and on-budget. Cabinets installed are of high quality, with soft-close hinges and drawers, and many "bonus features" coming standard. Appropriate referrals were made to select countertop, sink and backsplash and CSC took care of the rest. During the job, our questions and concerns were always addressed to satisfaction and they were able to accommodate a few changes that had come to us as an afterthought. They were mindful to protect the carpet and living areas, especially during demolition and cabinet install. Bill, Connie, Luke, Matt, Adam and Kurt were all very helpful and professional from start to finish. We love our new kitchen and dining room! Highly recommended!

From start to finish this was a great project. Bill and his team obviously take pride in their work and love seeing their customers completely satisfied. This was a good size project since not only did we have our kitchen completely gutted, we changed the layout, had a wall removed, and new flooring down in 3/4 of our entire first floor. This company was very easy to communicate with, responded very quickly, and made sure all our concerns/questions were answered to our satisfication. I would hire them again and again.

I found Craftsman Service Company online through Angie's List. They had good reviews and a nice website. I submitted an inquiry through their website and received a phone call within hours! I discussed what work I would like done and scheduled an in-home visit within a few days. Bill arrived on time. I invited him into the kitchen where we were hoping to have some cabinets removed and a custom kitchen island built. He listened to our ideas. He had very little to say. He jotted down a few notes and said he would be in contact in a few days. As soon as he left, my husband and I knew it would be unlikely we would hear from him. He was at our house less than 10 minutes. He took very few measurements and didn't give many visions or ideas for the job. A few days then turned into over a week. I reached out via email to check the status of the quote. *Crickets* It has been well over a month with no contact from Craftsman Service Company. I could understand if they didn't want to take the job since it wasn't a full kitchen remodel, which I clearly explained when I made the home visit. Any communication would have been appreciated.

Response from Craftsmen Service Co / 1 Stop
We appreciate the opportunity to bid every job for Angies List members. My recollection is, the member wanted to reuse existing cabinets and counter tops to create an island. I explained, that wasn't typical of the work we could do., and if I had any ideas I would send them an email. My apology to the member for our insufficient communication about the project.
Craftsmen Service Co. is a family-owned business, and we found them to be very friendly, professional, and a pleasure to work with. We felt the same about Kurt, who was a company employee, not a family member, but did a significant portion of our work. I am a visual person, so I really appreciated the computer-generated design options that Adam sent me to help with deciding how to redesign our bathroom space. Remodeling our old home is very challenging, but these craftsmen were terrific problem-solvers. We are extremely happy with all the work they did for us.
Description of Work: We started with a downstairs bathroom redesign and remodel. Craftsmen Service transformed an old bathroom into a beautiful space. They removed a tub and replaced it with a tiled shower with grab bars and a corner seat. They installed a new tile floor, ceiling lighting and vent, a linen closet, and toilet. They custom built a vanity with a beautiful granite top and created a perfectly sized framed mirror to hang over the vanity. We were so pleased with the quality of Service Craftsmen's work that we hired them for additional remodeling. They changed the opening of a closet from a den to an adjacent hallway, refinished hallway ceilings and installed new light fixtures, installed wainscoting in a hallway, and added ceiling molding to two bedrooms. They installed a new laminate floor in our upstairs bathroom, a new toilet, and a new sink.

Bill and his sons were fantastic from start to finish. They worked with us on picking everything out, really listened to what we said about what we wanted out of the space, and started and finished the work on time. When I was not happy with the quality of a countertop, they immediately replaced it. They made multiple trips out to make sure that everything was just the way we wanted it. Their prices were really reasonable, and I will absolutely hire them for our next home renovation project.
They were amazing to work with. Very responsive and flexible. We moved the kitchen to where my dining room had been and installed two brand new bathrooms with closets. The final product is beautiful. I am incredibly satisfied with the work that was done. Very friendly and hard-working. It is a nice family-run company, and I would definitely hire them again.
Description of Work: Installed a new kitchen and added two bathrooms
Excellent. Craftsmen Service company is operated by Bill and his three sons. One of these four people - typically a son - was always on the job site. Everyone was very easy to work with and communicated well. I discussed my remodel ideas with Bill and plans were created, reviewed, and adjusted as needed before work began. Once Craftsmen started the job, at least one worker was at my home working every day until the job was completed. The daily work progress was especially appreciated during the bathroom remodel! Any unforeseen construction problems were discussed and quickly resolved. There were a couple of very minor problems concerning supplies. Worked still progressed, but the completion date needed to extended slightly. Price is always a concern with any contractor or project. I felt I received good value for what I paid for both projects. The bathroom budget exceeded the estimate by just over 10% and the kitchen project was on target and completed at the budget estimate. I would highly recommend Bill, and his sons, at Craftsmen Service.
Description of Work: Craftsmen Service company remodeled the master bathroom and the kitchen in my Columbus, Ohio condo. The 1960's bathroom was completely updated. Tub was removed and full shower, with glass doors, tile on three walls and floor, and all new fixtures were installed. Once the bathroom was finished, I decided to hire Craftsmen to completely remodel the kitchen, including removing two walls. New cabinets, counter tops, lighting, electrical, appliances, flooring and a new island were installed.

First time remodeling in our house, so didn't know what to expect. Everyone was very professional, punctual and always made sure I was updated with progress. We had a pretty significant leak from the shower, to the point where it rotted some wood in the floor. Adam and his dad and brother, pinpointed the leak and fixed it. We had a vanity made by my father in law and it wasn't quite done when it needed to be. Adam said no problem. The tile work in the shower turned out beautiful. The floor went from linoleum to tile and is equally as gorgeous. I am jealous we did the kids bathroom first! We had an issue with a different type of leak near the completion of the project, but Adam and his dad assured us it was not the same as the previous leak and kept trouble shooting until it was resolved. And we haven't had any leaks since! Then, after our cold December, I noticed some of the grout cracking. I called Adam and he came out to assess it within in days. He fixed it and made sure to let me know if we had any other issues we can call. Was so impressed that he made time for us when it had been 2-3 months since the job was finished and I'm quite sure they are busy. Will definitely be using them we we do the master bathroom!

They were able to fit me in very quickly due to a cancellation. It was wonderful how quickly they could work, the only downside was some of the other vendor work (like cabinets and shower glass) were unable to get their pieces done so quickly without a little advance notice. Still, it all came together very well and my bathroom is gorgeous! The only complaint I have is on price as they only guarantee their labor estimate, not parts and supplies which are passed on at cost. The parts and supplies estimate was off due to some things like permits and such being left out and the overrun in that area was unexpected. Much of that was a leaning curve for me that I will be much more detailed with for future projects. Overall, their work ethic, attention to detail, and communication was excellent!

I called Craftsmen Service Co. only to find out via Connie (wife and scheduler) they do major bathroom renovations. I asked if they could recommend a handyman who would help us in our present situation. My husband is in home hospice care and that bathing unit is the only one he can use. Her husband and owner of the company hearing the conversation asked for the dimensions of the unit and offered to install it. A relatively minor project but a much needed one in our current situation. Within two weeks Bill installed the shower door unit. This is not only a professional and highly rated company but a company led by a husband and wife team who see beyond the bottom line and the size of the renovation project to lend a hand and a heart. The project was completed and the clean up performed and within 5-6 hours my husband had a working bathing unit once again.

They were fantastic. Craftsmen Service is a lot of things I wanted in a contractor. They are a family business, with a father and his sons. They did not have to bring in a lot of subs so I knew who I was working with. They are easy to work with and finished on time, and within budget. They did a nice job and I would recommend them to anyone.

In September my wife and I purchased an historic home built in 1892. The home was in very poor shape and needed a total renovation. We researched numerous contractors using Angies List as well as referrals from friends and family. We heard every salesmen's pitch you can think of. We did our due dillegance in selecting a contractor as we realized we were about to start a long difficult and expensive journey in our lives. We ended up selecting Craftsmen Service Company even though they don't advertise as a total home contractor! Our final decision was based on many factors not the least of which we both felt that the owner Bill, was trustworthy and honest! He and his boys, Adam, Matt, and Luke, did not disappoint! They did what they said they were going to do? They made " things work" that seemed impossible at the time. My wife and I, due to this being our first MAJOR renovation asked for many changes a long the way. Craftsmen reply was always We will make it happen. And they did. We along with many friends, family, and neighbors are so impressed with the outcome . The renovation exceeded all of our expectations. Our home has become a "stop" for so many people who are curious of the goings on with our home. I would like to take the credit for selecting Craftsmen but it seems other forces may have been at work here. Regardless, do yourself a favor and save yourself the heartache and stress that can accompany construction on your home. Give craftsmen a call! Val and Dave Ruddock.........

I called for an estimate and Bill responded the next day. He was punctual, listened to our wants and ideas, made a few measurements, suggestions and emailed an estimate within a couple of days. After we had decided to go with Craftsmen, we met with Bill and Adam, discussed the plan, exchanged a few emails and ideas and set up a start date. They made the project easy for us once it started. They cleaned up the area daily and often we would get home before they had completed for the day and they would stay and review their work with us, would answer any questions and discuss any little changes we might want to make. We actually would get a daily briefing of what was done and what was the next step would be. I would definitely hire them again and highly recommend their work.

Let me start by saying Craftsmen is a family operation and provided a high level of service from start to finish. We ended up with a bathroom that fits our 1934 Arts & Crafts bungalow perfectly and one which we will enjoy for many years to come. My wife and I are very happy with the results and would recommend Craftsmen to anyone looking for a quality bathroom remodel.

Craftsmen did a complete remodel of my bathroom and I had recently posted a review, but it appears that with the recent Angie’s List website update, all reviews posted since 2012 for Craftsmen have disappeared. As it happens, my original review was less than positive and I did get an emailed response from the owner, Bill Shepherd. He offered to correct any issues and also asked that I reconsider my review as “comments have a direct and immediate affect on our business” and that “even pro golfers get in sand traps.” True, but users of Angie’s List depend on other users’ honesty to make informed decisions. I originally wasn’t going to post a review at all. We weren’t 100% satisfied with the remodel but as it had run well over schedule at that point, really just wanted it to be over with. It had also become clear that while Bill says they’ll correct anything the customer is unhappy with, they seem to lack the skill, the attention to detail, or both, to do what I (and many professionals) would consider to be quality work. We had asked for a few of the more obvious corrections and their “fixes” left something to be desired. Since the completion of the job, we’ve only continued to notice more and more things that were not done properly. Bill asked that I reconsider my review, so I have. And upon reconsideration, decided to write another review and include pictures to help illustrate some of my frustrations. A few general things – The job ran well over schedule. In Bill’s email, he admits that it ran over but points out that he didn’t charge us any extra money for that. Ok, but we also allowed them to move our start date so that they could finish another job that had run over, and was told that once they started our job, they’d only work on OUR job. This turned out to be false. Also, our security system tells us when people come and go so we know just how few hours they worked most days. (Interestingly, on a day when my wife or I would be at home, they’d work a full day.) Communication was a mixed bag. They responded to emails and texts quickly. However, our point person changed a few times without warning or explanation, and information wasn’t always passed on from one person to the next. For example, we provided a paint chip to one person, but then the one who was going to go get the paint didn’t have it. He actually asked us if we remembered what the color was called. Have you ever look at paint color names?? No, we don’t remember what it was called. I was also contacted twice by the company they sent us to for the cabinet/counter, asking if and when we were going to pick up our cabinets, and when we were going to schedule the counter installation. I had been told that Craftsmen would take care of that. Instead, I had to coordinate it. The mess was unreal. I know that construction is dusty; I expect dust. What I don’t expect are cigarette butts and wood scraps scattered around outside, bits of things all over the floors inside, and most frustrating, plastic spacers in the yard from where they rinsed their tiling equipment. We just found yet another spot in the yard where water, grout, and SPACERS were dumped. We have a puppy who’ll put anything in her mouth, and this is inside of her fenced-in area. Note – This job was finished months ago and we’re still finding the spacers in the grass. Also, no attempts were made to protect or cover the new cabinets after they were installed, so we had to take the time to clean the dust and gunk out of not only the inside of the drawers and cabinets, but also the drawer slides. At this point, I should mention that this was a COMPLETE remodel, everything taken out and the layout changed. The problems we have now were frustratingly avoidable. So no, despite Bill’s assurances that he’ll make it all right, I’m not willing to have them come and tear things up again. What I’d really like to know is why things weren’t done properly the first time. The floor isn’t level which has resulted in both the toilet rocking and an obvious gap between one area of the trim tile and the floor. The “subfloor” they put down was pieced together from old scraps of plywood. One of the corrections I asked for was that gap; they “fixed” it by adding a little more grout (there’s still a big gap) and the grout they used in that spot isn’t even the same color grout as what’s everywhere else. It’s a darker color, thus making the gap that much more obvious. The correct method would’ve been to level the subfloor in the first place. We picked out wall-to-wall cabinets based on their measurements. When they installed the cabinets, they didn’t do a dry fit first, choosing instead to attach them from left to right, only to find once they were installed that there was about 4 inches too much space. The solution, which was the only real workable solution at that point, was to install a large filler at the end. Because there is no spacer on the left wall, the drawer barely misses rubbing the wall. The correct method would’ve been to first, measure the space correctly, and second, dry fit the cabinets before installation and determine what adjustments needed to be made. In the shower, which is brand new and created entirely by them, the water pools in an area away from the drain. The walls are not straight which is apparent when you look at the floor tile. A few of the wall tiles were installed backwards; that is, the back side of the tile faces out. Bill said that that happens sometimes because you cut the tiles wet. True, but you can feel the difference between the front side and the back side, AND most of the ones we’ve found that are backwards are whole tiles. One of the corrections we requested was for a backwards tile along the door frame (easily accessible) which is directly at eye height to be replaced. Instead of replacing it, they simply ground down the face so that it looks a little more like the others around it, but is still obviously wrong. On the wall with the door to enter the bathroom, they installed quarter inch drywall over the plaster and door frame. They cut it too large and then attached it along the edges, which causes the drywall to bow out. There are holes in the plaster behind it from the old fixtures, so between the holes and the gap between the plaster and bowed drywall, standard wall anchors that came with our toilet paper holder and towel rack have nothing to grab onto. When the trim around the door was replaced, because the drywall was installed over the door frame, a gap was left between the frame and the trim, to which Bill added a filler piece. The correct method would’ve been to take the old plaster down and install proper drywall. In response to that particular observation, Bill said that was done because the wall is “out of plumb”, drywall over plaster was the only way to get a smooth wall, and the only other option would’ve been to replace the entire wall, studs and all. First, this wall has no cabinets on it, so whether or not it was plumb was a non-issue. Second, the wall IS plumb, or at least the opposite side of it is. (Due to the new bowing issue, it’s hard to get an accurate read on the bathroom side, but if the hall side of the studs are plumb, chances are…) And finally, the paint, caulk, and trim are just plain sloppy. I know that Craftsmen gets lots and lots of good reviews; the majority of their reviews are A. With a reputation like that, I’m sure that my one negative review won’t be much of a concern to them. After all, I disregarded the few negative reviews, assuming that those customers were exaggerating or were just difficult people. Bill will tell you himself, as I’m sure he’ll tell customers about me, that some people are just unreasonable. I can assure you, though, that I do not exaggerate and I do not write a negative review lightly. We were so optimistic and pleased with Craftsmen at the beginning and had hoped to hire them to do lots of other jobs on our home. Now I realize I should’ve paid more attention to those negative reviews. ETA: I have pictures illustrating the above, but am having issues uploading. Help, Angie's List!

This report is very surprising for a number of reasons. This project took considerably longer than expected due to issues such as asbestos removal, cement walls which were not typical for a house of this age, and pre-existing plumbing issues. Despite the project time running almost double what had been estimated, the homeowners remained very patient and understanding. We always ask homeowners to make a list of everything they would like perfected toward the end of the project, and let us know if they need anything even if it is years later. This report is our first notice that the homeowners were unhappy. They made no attempt to contact us, but instead posted their negative review directly. We have contacted the homeowners to let them know that we would be happy to come back over and fix any issues with which they may be upset. They have denied our attempts on two occasions despite our assurance that the remedies would take less than a week to complete. We usually do not try to make rebuttals and arguments through our review responses, but because of some of the excessive exaggerations, I feel it is necessary to respond specifically to what has been mentioned here. We do not take any shortcuts in our work. That is the reason why this 5-week project ended up taking 10 weeks. We never increased our labor price, as promised, despite all of the unforeseen work required to properly complete this project. The only perceived shortcut was our use of a piece of quarter inch drywall over their doorway wall. The house framing was 2 inches out of alignment, which could not be re-framed and created a warped looking wall. Building out this wall would throw the door out of square, so the best solution was to smooth out the wall with the least protrusion possible. Tearing the wall down to the studs would not have fixed the problem or we would have done that. We cleaned up after ourselves thoroughly every day. Many days spending as much as an hour cleaning. We use dust containment systems and floor protection as a precaution on top of this. We never sat at the homeowners' dining room table to take a break. Whenever we use the toilet, we always leave the toilet seat exactly as we found it. We updated the homeowner frequently on our scheduling issues and plans. During the 10-week period, we only did not work two days that were not weekends or holidays, with prior notification and consent from the homeowner. Only one member of our company smokes cigarettes and he ALWAYS disposes of the butts in his personal work vehicle. We build our shower bases meticulously and precisely, checking for proper slope throughout the entire process. Without the willingness of the customer to let us come back out to their home, I can only speculate the "pooling standing water" is simply a few thin tiles of the natural stone laid on the shower base. This would be easy to fix regardless of the severity. There are shims made specially for rocking toilets, also an easy fix. The floor is not level because it is not possible to level a floor unless the door is the highest point in the bathroom. The floor is perfectly flat, and the vanity and vanity top are indeed level. IN SUMMARY: The project took longer than expected. This is the customer's first complaint to us. The customer's review is insulting not only to us, but also our previous clients. Despite the insults, we offered multiple times to fix every issue which would take less than a week. Our requests to fix these issues were denied. There are only four issues actually noted here, which are easy to fix. We stand by the quality of our work and are always willing to fix every issue.
