I would recommend Bill Varney for any household project, reconstruction, or renovation you have planned. Bill and his crew were very professional. They were on time, treated my house as if it were their own. Bill explained the process at each stage of construction and followed through to ensure success. The entire job was well planned and executed. I enclosed a 11X19 loft area into an extra living room so my children would have a place to play and watch tv. Bill gave me an excellent rate. He was significantly below every other quote that i received. I would recommend him for any project that you have. In fact, I expect to use him again this summer to redo my office area and Master bath.

I noticed that a section of my front porch overhang was had some wood rot. Previous to this, I've contacted other contractors for an estimate. I've had 2 contractors who wasted my time by breaking appointments and 2 other contractors who took several measurements but was too busy to get back to me (after weeks of me following up) with any estimate. Bill came out and examined my porch and gave a detailed estimate of what work would be required. He also informed me that more than likely I had some damage inside the wall of my house. After some demolition work, he was able to get the whole picture of what needed to be done. Because of the hidden damage, my project did get a bit larger than I had hoped for, but every step of the way, Bill was able to explain what needed to be done next and kept in constant communication with me. We had to replace some of the wood frame that was rotted. After Bill and his team were done, they drywalled, textured and painted and you could never tell any work had been done. Bill designed the front porch himself and it looks amazing (a few of our neighbors have complimented). Now that our porch is replaced, it really improves the look of our home. Now,we love spending time in the front yard and sitting on our porch.

We were very happy with the work Bill provided. His staff was very friendly and happy to work with us. The whole job took 2 1/2 months to complete. My only complaint was that I was very anxious to have the job completed and there were days at a time when we didn't see anyone due to other jobs Bill was working on at the same time. I understand that there may have been a few small items that I was anxious to get done but not enough to utilize the crew for a whole day and be cost effective. It was just a big project that I was anxious to have completed. Bill likes to work through e-mail.. I just wasn't happy with the texting back and forth. It didn't work well for me. Over all we were very happy.

His painters were a little careless

The work preformed was great. I am very happy with the outcome of the job. Bill and his crew were congenial and professional. I was kept informed and consulted all along the process. I also discussed having Bill redo the stairs and I am looking forward to it. happening. I will be using Bill Varney and his crew again when I get ready to do the next big job, my bathroom.

If your contractor is too busy to talk to you before the job!! Your Life will be Stressful once he starts...

Bill Jr arrived when scheduled and got right down to work. The original estimate was for two days of work and that is how long it took. I am very happy with the workmanship and the final product. My shower looks like new without retiling the entire shower. While this has nothing to do with the actual work, there was no mess to clean up when the work was done. Bill covered the work area so the dust from the minor demolition he performed did not spread through the house. I greatly appreciated that extra care. There were some minor challenges in getting the actual start date set, but once we got through the scheduling part, everything happened as planned. As Varney Construction is a general contractor, I will definitely use him in the future for any additional work I have done in my home.

Bill and his employees were great to work with. He was very flexible, handling multiple changes to scope and direction. Very versatile and can-do, Bill is very good at usability and a great listener with very useful suggestions.

PROS: Work performed by Mr. Varney and his son was excellent. The finished remodel is a beautiful kitchen and guest bath. The tile floor, approximately 500 sq. ft. has received nothing but complements. The cabinets and quartz countertops purchased from Home Depot are gorgeous. There were a few snafus with Home Depot concerning scheduling, pricing, and delivery, but Bill did what he could to smooth those out. Overall, we are very pleased with the finished project. CONS: Start date was 2 weeks later than agreed upon and took 3-4 weeks longer than promised. There were a few hiccups: scheduling inspections, materials and supplies. If we had it to do over, we would have had the contractor purchase supplies outright, and we would have paid the invoice afterwards, as opposed to the will call method. Although we found Varney's construction on Angie's list with an advertised 10% discount, and Mr. Varney asked and was told at our first meeting where we located him, the discount was not offered at the final conclusion of work and payment. Either offer it and follow through, or take it off your advertisement.

The planning process went very smoothly. I would not hesitate to contact Mr Varney again.

Bill Varney, Jr. was a pleasure to work with from start to finish. He completed the project ahead of schedule and on budget. He was extremely clean and respectful of our home. Bill Jr provided suggestions regarding design and the overall remodeling project. We could not be more pleased with his work and will definitely contact him again for future projects.

I called Bill who was either onsite or driving. He said that he could come out on Saturday to give me a quote but wanted me to email all my information to him and he would call me back that evening when he got back. He did not call that evening or the following day so I called him again on Thursday 3rd. He stated that he had received my email but was out and about again and would get back to me that evening. He never called back and nor did he show on Saturday. He has not called me or replied to my email and with todays technology it is not difficult to look up received calls on cell phones to call back. Very disappointing!

They were very easy to speak with. They were very friendly. They seem very knowledgeable. The communication aspect of it was great. As far as the delivery aspect of it. They put down some flooring for me and they did a pretty good job for the flooring except one of the pieces didn't stick down properly and they had to come back. They took forever. Even though they did the work in the last week of October they didn't come back until Christmas time or the first week of January. They took a really long time to comeback and correct some small things. I give them a C for pricing because every single price that I received I had to negotiate down to. Not everybody likes that. Just tell me what it cost and let's just go ahead. Don't make me have to go around and get another quote from somebody else. That was the only downside in terms of dealing with them. Communication wise is that they are on the expensive side but they are not afraid to haggle. They actually want you to haggle with them. Maybe some people like that, I don't know. I didn't enjoy that part of the experience.

I had Bill Varney's crew come in to fix up my new house before I moved into it. The good news is that his crew was professional, did good work, and felt that I was paying a fair price for their work. My new fence is great, and the rebuilt wall is good as new. The roof work his crew did should pay for itself in a few years. There were some hiccups, but this may be a general issue with contracting, not an issue with Bill's crew. I had a very hard time getting his crew to start on the agreed date. More than once Bill's crew couldn't get started when he said they would. Schedule slipped in both directions - I had trouble getting them in when we had agreed, and the jobs took longer than initially estimated. In some cases it was understandable; when rebuilding a wall, you find things that need to be addressed, for example. But I never understood why the fence took so long to build. I am talking purely schedule here - I don't feel that there were any shenanigans about the man-hours I was charged. Towards the end, when trying to get insurance forms filled out for the roof repair, there were some minor responsiveness issues, but it was finally resolved. So all in all, I recommend them, just make sure to ride them closely if you've got a strict schedule.

Sometimes words can not express the true meaning of excellence! Bill and his son were very professional, organized, efficient and above all provided superior results in repairing my rotted and mold infested bedroom walls. They did not cut any corners and the end result demonstrated their ability to restore these walls to better than original. I can without any reservation recommend Varney Construction to anyone in need of a fantastic general construction company!

The fact that we were in the Chicago area during this process could have presented many challenges to getting the job done correctly and without incident. Bill was extremely responsive to my emails and always kept me updated as to the progress of the project. He did not assume anything about what my husband and I wanted during the scope of the project, which took about three months, since we were in no hurry to complete it. During that time, we exchanged numerous emails as well as a few phone calls, and we received MANY emailed photos as the job progressed. Due to delays in receiving the appliances, he needed to make special trips to the condo, to install a late-arriving microwave, for example. As promised, he was meticulous in his measurements and (from the pictures) he and his crew cleaned the area very well after the job was completed. His work also passed all of the required inspections. I would definitely recommend Bill for any home improvement project your subscribers may be considering.

It went very well. He came out for an estimate. He was on time and very friendly. A few weeks later he called me to follow up with me. He was very thoughtful, polite, and professional.

He did not show up, which I find to be just as bad as doing poor work. He didn't call and I haven't heard from him since.

Right from the start, I found Bill to be responsive. He called me the very next day (a Sunday) after my first attempt at contacting him on Angie's List, he worked to understand the total scope of the project before he tried to price it, and he started the work on the day he had originally promised. The crew kept the work site clean, picking up all excess debris and taking it with them at the end of each work day. Bill discussed issues with me that the team uncovered each day so that the work continued to progress on schedule. I also added a few things to the scope of the job and I always felt that he was fair with me on pricing. I had received two other bids for the work (one similar and one higher). In the end, I would say that the project went very well.

Bill did his homework before giving me an estimate on the job and made sure he knew exactly what needed to be done before starting the job. My vision of the fireplace-entertainment center was my own design and Bill was very careful to build it just like the drawings I provided to him. He is very detailed oriented and he heard my concerns all the way throughout the job. He is very punctual and showed up at my house every day very early in the morning while they were working. I had a tight deadline because my family was coming to visit and in order to make that deadline, some of the finishing details were not completely done to my liking. However, after my family left town, Bill came back with his son and I showed them up-close the details I had previously complained about. They apologized and fixed everything to my satisfaction and offered to come back as many times as needed to make me happy. I'm very grateful that they came back and made all the wrongs right. My fireplace-entertainment center now looks as I hoped it would and I'll be proud to show it to my friends and family. Thanks Bill!!!

We were impressed with Bill's professionalism and punctuality upon our very first meeting, and I have to say his punctuality and follow through were excellent throughout our entire project. Bill is a firm believer in email communications, which is a great way of making sure everyone is on exactly the same page. I think Bill's pricing is a bit higher than you might find in other quotes, but I truly believe in paying a little extra for good work, follow through, and commitment to meet the customer's expectations. To be honest, I did not get other quotes because I was comfortable with Bill, I just felt the price a bit high. Work was completed on schedule, and I have to say I am very pleased with the end result, and I am very particular as I spent my entire career in Quality Control and product testing. The texture of the new wall sections closely match the existing texture of the rest of the house, and it is impossible to tell the sections were added after the house was built. The only quibble I had for this entire process was that I never got a full accounting of billed materials against the quoted materials. This is partially my fault as I did not drive this hard enough due to company and other travel plans. Bottom line is that I am very pleased with results, and feel I got very good value quality work for the money spent! My thanks to Bill and Bill Jr. for their quality work and follow through.

It took a long time to actually get these guys here because they are apparently very busy. They were definitely worth the wait. I couldn't have asked for anything better. They were quite a bit more expensive than the other quotes but you only get what you pay for. I tried to cut corners by hiring someone who was giving me a "DEAL" and it was a disaster. Bill Varney and his son had to demolish the first guys mess and redo the entire job. My mistake by trying to get a deal actually cost me double in time and money. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND BILL VARNEY & SON!!!!!!
