Upon arrival to pick up the repaired unit, the guy presented me with a $207 bill for replacing the carburetor, lubricating the gears and fixing the switch wiring. I refused to pay and requested a copy of the invoice, explaining that I intended to take the matter up with the manufacturer. After that, the guy refused to give me a copy of the invoice and gleefully stated that he could withhold the invoice and the trimmer because he had a lien on the trimmer. I decided to limit my losses and left the premises without the deposit and without the trimmer. Don't get ripped off like I did from Degen's.
Description of Work: I bought a new Shindaiwa string trimmer from Degen's for $350. The unit stopped working after 1.5 years so I took it in for what should have been a warranty repair. The trimmer stopped working due to an electrical problem with the switch wiring. I explained this to the guy who is apparently now the owner. I paid a $40 nonrefundable repair fee that was to be applied to the repair cost, if applicable.

In response to this review. the customer actually brought in 2 repairs to us. A Shindaiwa trimmer and an Echo blower. Both units had very bad carburetors from stale/varnished gas. The Echo blower was so bad that the fuel lines and grommet were literally turning into jelly. Bad gas, is not a defective part and therefore not covered under the manufacturers warranty. The "loose" wire he mentioned was repaired and was not the reason the unit would not stay running. We offered to show the customer a copy of the warranty statement so that he could read it for himself. We suggested that if he did not believe us and wanted to contact Shindaiwa to discuss it further we would be okay with that as well, we have nothing to hide. The customer demanded that we give him an original copy of the receipt, obviously, we cannot give any customer a printed receipt when they have not paid for the repair yet. Just to be crystal clear the customer was presented the bills to look over at the counter. Once the customer refused to pay, he decided to contact the police. We explained all of this to the police when they arrived and the police explained it again to the customer, he got in his vehicle and left. This review is the next thing we have heard from the customer. Hopefully, future customers who have taken the time to read this review and our response will make more sense out of this transaction. We look forward to helping them out just like we have done for 1000's of other customers over the 6 decades that we have been located here.

I was sent here by Troybilt for a warrenty on a trimmer that was 2 months old and only used 5 times. It would not start. The trimmer cost $99. I was greated rudely and was not told when it would be finished. $40 was demanded to "look at the trimmer". I recieved a call from Wes stating there was nothing wrong and would not be covered by warranty. I asked if there was an additional charge and was shocked to find he wanted $37 "for gas" in addition to the $40 already paid. I searched the internet and better buisiness and found multiple complaints regarding shake downs where Wes at Degens would essentially hold the product for randsom. I contacted Troybilt and was not able to resolve this issue. They currently still have my trimmer and $40 deposite. They advertise 50 years of service. Thats 50 years of dis-service and dishonesty.

In response to this review. Greeting our customers "rudely" & "demanding" money is just not what we do, as a professional repair shop, helping our customers for nearly 60 years in our community. Yes, we collect a $40 deposit, it is posted on a large board behind the counter, it is not a secret, and every respectable shop in town does it. This particular repair had bad gas & water in the tank. We flushed out the carburetor and saved the customer money by cleaning it out, not just replacing the carburetor. In this case that is not a defective part, therefore, we could not write a warranty to Troybilt. We do get our fair share of reviews such as this, it is the 1% of our customers, but we still take the time to respond so our future customers know our side of the story. Even with a dissatisfied customer like this we would have tried to advise them how to care for the equipment and instruct them on better fuel storage habits so this does not happen again in the future. We literally write our "rules for fuel" on their receipts!!! It cant get much better than that. We know that is the best service that we can provide and will continue to do so for our valued customers.

It Went GREAT!! Wes was very prompt for our appointments & walked us through the entire process of what was going to be done & how much it would cost - which was A LOT LESS than buying a new generator. He picked up the generator & returned it to us as well as communicated with us clearly on all aspects & time frames (a nice change of pace if you've ever dealt with contractors or repairmen here in South Florida!! When the generator was returned he again walked us through what was done (even returning the old parts that had been replaced) & gave us several very helpful tips & money saving suggestions so we wouldn't need to see him as much - when does that ever happen? Great guy, great family-owned business!! They also do lawn mower & other yard equipment maintenance & sales! We will definitely use them again & again!!
