Description of Work: Lenny visited our house to give us estimate on a new screen room. He indicated that we may have problem with HOA and therefore we should first check with HOA. We found that our plan will not meet HOA building code. Therefore we dropped the idea of enclosed Screen room.

Description of Work: Really enjoyed working with Lenny at Star Construction. The only reason we did not hire this company is we decided not to build on but rather just buy a new house. We will contact Star Construction if we remodel this house.

As stated ...we did not perform any work as the owners decided to purchase a new home. We did do a cost breakdown and preliminary drawings for the remodeling of the old house. They were satisfied with all our efforts to assist them.

Description of Work: They added on a 7x30 ft addition to the front of the house. The work was okay. There were some delays and they didn’t get the work correct with inspector, so they keep having to make changes and charging us extra.

This was a complex job as we added an addition across the front of the house which was non conforming to the current building codes. The job location was in the City of Miami Springs, a small community with its own building department We reviewed the building plans with the owners who requested some small changes..The owners signed and approved the plans and a revised set of plans was submitted to the City for approval and permit, All structural details, dimensions & specifications were approved by the City Engineer and plan processors, ie, plumbing, electric, mechanical, etc. As required,during construction, we called for an inspection dor structural columns & beams. The inspector, who is also the chief of the building department, contradicted the engineers approved plans and required additional structural work to be done. The owners were advised of the required changes and was given the opportunity to discuss these matters with the chief of the building dept. The owners agreed to the work and approved an Extra Work Order for the additional costs. Naturally, this also required additional work and additional construction time. We had to order special Impact windows to match some existing windows we were reinstalling. This also created some delay. At the time of final inspection, the owners seemed very pleased and satisfied with the overall project. Everyone who saw the addition was very impressed with the quality and workmanship and felt it was a first class job. Even to match exterior panelling that was over 20 years old. No complaints were ever indicated to us.

When I talked to them they seemed very experienced and they responded very quickly. The initial quote that I got was around 5 or 6 thousand dollars. It was a bad experience they never told me about all the city permits that I had to pay, inspectors, and payments to the city. It was just a very bad experience with them. I would tell other people to make sure that they tell them before they start the job all the extra costs that they might run into. One of the things that really upset me was they said they had 40 years of experience but then they told me that they didn't know the city was going to charge that much for the permits and stuff. A company that has so many years of experience should know especially working in Miami for so many years.
Description of Work: They removed a window I had and put a wall in. They did the remodeling of my bathroom. They did tile in my porch.

The Member is a very charming and lovely young lady. She recently purchased a 2 story Town Home in Coconut Grove, Miami, Fl. I reviewed the work scope and we entered into a Contract Agreement for the proposed work. Since the renovation work would require Architectural drawings, Building permits and field inspections by the building departments, I told her that the only thing I could not charge her for was the actual permit fees required by the City of Miami. These fees are determined by the Plan Processors for the City and I could not pre-deterrmine the costs, but would prepay the fees and would show her the City Invoices and to be reimbursed for actual costs. This detail was put in writing in her contract. A slight inaccuracy is that there were sliding glass doors on the upper level to be removed and closed up and a new Impact-special -order Egress window was to be installed. All work was done in a professional & workmanlike manner.,At completion, I met with her and gave her the " Certificate Of Occupancy" by the City. She paid the fnal balance due on completion and never complained about the work...although due to inspections, waiting for her tiles to arrive, special window order....and other items beyond contractors control, did cause a slight delay in completing the work. For these reasons, we do not impose a Bonus or Penalty clause to our Agreement. There were Extra Work Orders requested by the Member, which we performed and which she paid for, consequently increasing the original Estimate.and job cost. The fact that she was upset over the Permit fees are justifiable, however, we have no say or control over these matters My 40 years in the construction business does not preclude the fact that we build in over 32 Municilpalities and each City has their own Building Department, Ordinances, Permit fees, etc. and in no way could I quote any permit fees in advance. As an aside, the City Inspector making the final inspection commented.in our presence;." they did a great job". Unfortunately, the City of Miami has an antiquated system which requires not only a Building permit fee, but extra fees for windows, doors, plumbing, electric, mechanical. etc. With exception of the " permit fees" I see no viable reason for the Members to be dissatisfied with the work performed.

The job went extremely well. Mr. L Feldman, the contractor,was very professional and communicated well with his crew. He checked the job site daily. Phone calls were returned quickly. The men were hard working and competent. They cleaned up the job site as needed. In the end a distressed room was made into a bright beautiful living space.
Description of Work: A bedroom with adjoining bathroom were damaged by water and termites. This included the floors and support wood underneath and all the walls including a closet and frames to the doors. There was also a leak from the flat roof that damaged the wall and ceiling in the northeast side of room.

We found Star Construction through Angie's List. The project was a joy for us from start to finish. Leonard Feldman, of Star Construction, responded immediately to look at our house (he made a personal trip and spent quite some time with us) to enlarge our living area. Mr. Feldman is an unbelievably knowledgeable person who sat down with us, actually sketched out a plan and helped us budget for the work. He provided a detailed proposal with a reasonable price. He then engaged an engineer to draw up plans, made sure the permitting was achieved, and oversaw the project. His workmen did exactly what we expected in good time. We got what we asked for and nothing less (and even a little more). This was an anxiety-free project.

Basically, they took what I thought would be a mole hill and made a mountain out of it. They could not afford to do the job according to the highest standards this builder requires.

While we appreciate the opportunity to offer our services, Member was not aware of the stringent building codes in South Florida.What he thought was a "molehill" in fact required his existing -non conforming structure to be rebuilt in order to become an integral part of his home and meet all required building ordinances. We never reached a design-build agreement and only a "ballpark" figure seemed to be beyond his budget. I did suggest that he employ an Architect or Engineer to design the project to permit us to bid on the final structural details and specifications. Our prices are very competitive, however, we never heard from Member again.

He did a beautiful job. He has been in business since about 1980. He belongs to the BBB and the Builders Association of south Florida, the Teachers United Union, and chamber of Commerce. He is licensed and insured. He is really a very honest and reputable gentleman. I have no hesitance at all recommending him. Every step of the way he gives paperwork, so there is not just a hand shake. If anything comes up you can go legally to show that he has contracted to do your work. He is a great kind of a guy.
Description of Work: He put up drywall for the people in the condominium and rehung doors. Put in plywood over the windows and sliding glass doors so if it rained it wouldn't completely flood. They cleaned up glass and debris. He also did work on my terrace.
