My saga with Roger and Knock on Wood (KOW) Pergolas began last January, not 2018, but 2017. When selecting a company to build my pergola, I tried my best to do my research and to try and find a legitimate and honest company. KOW wasn't the cheapest by far, but at the time they had a few good online reviews. I wasn't looking for the cheapest, I wanted to find someone to get the job done right. In an effort to be transparent with this review, I've created a Google Drive and shared the link below that contains every single text between myself and Roger along with pictures of what they left me with, for people to judge for themselves and make up their own mind regarding my authenticity. If you take the time to read through my google drive, I suspect most of you will come to the same realization that I did, I was too complacent with Roger and should have held him and KOW accountable much sooner. You'll see that things went south from the very beginning, I should've realized that I was facing an uphill battle when it took him two months to get my plans made up, another 2 months after that to start building. Maybe I should've realized that I was in trouble when he laid the foundation for a 14x28 instead of a 16x28 pergola, which is clearly stated in his text in pic 2228 on the Google folder and on the invoice I shared, or maybe I should've realized when he asked me to front him more money (his text in pic 2240 in the Google folder) because he was short on cash, or when he tried to get away with using PT2 lumber, when the invoice in the Google drive clearly states PT1 lumber and now I have support columns peeling or cracking, or when I paid him in June of 2017 for the work he had subcontracted to Swank to build the footers of my pergola, and didn't pay Swank till mid-December, and he only paid Swank after I found out that Shannon had threatened to lien my property (texts pic 2262, 2264, 2254, 2288 in the Google folder) or maybe I should've realized when he installed the roof and I had a waterfall inside my pergola every time it rained. All along the way it was excuse after excuse from Roger, newborn baby, crashed truck, surgeries, etc... But in the end, he didn't deliver what her promised. He tells me in his final text that I wasn't reasonable, but let my evidence show whether I was reasonable or not. If anything, I think I was too complacent to KOW's nonsense that transcribed over the past 20 months. You judge for yourself and determine if you want to hire Roger and KOW, I personally wouldn't let them hang a picture frame in my house, much less trust them with building anything of scale. I tried cutting a deal with him, build me a privacy wall with lumber that doesn't warp and touch up the paint on the Pergola, but he replied that I was being unreasonable in my request (texts pic 2283-2290 in the Google folder). In the end, Roger and KOW chose to walk away and leave me a with a poorly built pergola that is defective at every angle or corner you look at. From this point forward, I would caution any new positive reviews that pop up after this one, unless these new positive reviews demonstrate an invoice or authentic payments made to KOW. Considering all the pictures of pergolas they frequently post on Facebook and Instagram, I would have expected more positive reviews, that should've been red flag #1. I would also suspect the majority of existing positive reviews are friends and family of KOW. [*** Link removed ***]
