I got the run around of a service call being required at a few of $89. I've already paid twice @ $90 for the same information to be told to me. I don't need another pay out get a simple quote of a compressor replacement.
Description of Work: I was calling around for quotes on a compressor replacement. I already pad $90 for two other HVAC companies to tell me the same things after assessment. i didn't need to pay another $90 to hear someone tell me the same thing and to give me a quote. The rest of the world of business gives quotes and understands the word "competition". I was thoroughly disgusted with this type of bait and switch. Just give us customer what we ask for and you just might get our business. But I left a voice mail for the supervisor and have not received a returned call as of yet. It's only been 7 minutes since I placed the call.

Response from Durham and Sons Inc
The member called our office on [Member Information Removed] Monday morning asking for [Member Information Removed] price quote to change out [Member Information Removed] compressor and [Member Information Removed] price on changing out [Member Information Removed] condenser. He was told by our dispatcher we don't quote repair prices over the phone, that there are too many variables to give an accurate quote. Our dispatcher told the member our service manager was not in the office, but he could leave him [Member Information Removed] message on his voicemail, which he did. The supervisor never got back into the office Monday. I returned his call Tuesday. I explained to him we don't normally quote compressor change outs (and similar type work) without looking at them because the problem may not be the compressor at all. We don't feel it's [Member Information Removed] good business practice to go change an expensive part based on another companies diagnosis. If their diagnosis is wrong, and [Member Information Removed] customer just spent $1500-$2000 to fix their [Member Information Removed]/c and the system still doesn't work, they are NOT going to be happy customers. But because the member was so insistent, I agreed to see what I could do. The customer told us he would send us the model and serial number of the unit (he said it was 3-5 years old) so we could quote him [Member Information Removed] compressor change out and [Member Information Removed] condenser change out. He wanted to text it, so I told him he could send it to my personal cell phone. When I asked to see the invoices from the other [Member Information Removed]/c contractors so I could make sure proper testing and diagnosis was done, the member refused, and responded "have you ever heard the saying, give the customer what they want?" When I asked if he was just trying to find out if the previous prices he got were fair, he responded "let me be the judge of fair pricing, I am old enough to do that". It turns out based on the model number the member sent me, the unit is 20 years old, not 3-5. We told him it would not be worth changing [Member Information Removed] compressor only on [Member Information Removed] system that old. I then told him the condenser only could not be changed out because it is an R22 system, and they are no longer available. It would have to be [Member Information Removed] full system change out. I apologized and said I am sorry, I am sure that is not the answer you want, but that is an honest answer, and we are not the type of company that would do an expensive repair on [Member Information Removed] 20 year old system. The member never responded to me after that. I really felt texting me back at least an ok would be appropriate. I really don't know what he meant in his review about being thoroughly disgusted with the bait and switch? Furthermore I don't thing being mad because you didn't get [Member Information Removed] call back in 7 minutes justifies writing [Member Information Removed] scathing review and giving us all F's. I tried my best to accommodate the member, but it was obviously not the answer they wanted. Darla Carter, Business Manager

Did both electrical and AC work during our condo remodel and would recommend. Ms. Lisa and Jackie that answer the phones are great and very helpful. They moved electrical wires, switches and lights for condo redo as well as AC repair last summer and are about to put in a new condenser for our AC just died due to harsh weather conditions. cost for AC repair under $200, cost for electrical work $2000 cost for new condenser $3500.

All went just fine ! We have been customers for years with Durham and Sons. The idea of getting a new Trane started with our first conversation with Mike R. and his knowledge of the systems and what would work best for us. Then speaking with Dawna for our scheduling and contract information. Then of course, our installers Riley and Steve. We felt confident that all would go well and it did !

Our master bedroom, which is the furthest room from the air handler, was originally designed with insufficient airflow. This includes the return under the air handler as well as the single small air vent into the bedroom. Durham and Sons added a matching return vent to enable more airflow into the air handler, replaced the plenum into the attic to improve the pressure, and ran a separate air duct directly to the master bedroom to improve cooling. What a huge difference. My wife said she's slept the best she ever done since living in the house. It is sooo cool in the bedroom now! As a Quality Engineer, I pay a lot of attention to workmanship. The Durham technicians take the time and effort to get the details right. In addition, all of them were very professional. If I need a/c or electrical work in the future, these guys will be the first people I call.

Vince came out on April 6, 2017 as scheduled and listened to everything I wanted to do and made a lot of notes. When we were finished I explained, and showed him my Angie's List coupon. He explained that the discount would not expire at the conclusion of the current work requested, instead if I did not use the entire discount, it would be carried over to the next service call if needed. Since the discount was for 10% up to $100, I only used $90, so I have a $10 discount (approximately) for the next time I need it. When I was ready for the work to be done, it was easily scheduled and set for 9am. Since Vince did have to stop by the shop and pick some things up to finish my job, he showed up around 9:30, but was ready to work. I never saw him take a break and he did the inside work first so he did not disturb me with coming in and out. I have 2 small dogs that are very inquisitive, and he pet them and talked to them first so they were fine with him. When the job was completed, he cleaned everything up, and I do mean everything. I even asked for one of the boxes back for the lights I purchased incase I had to return something that I bought to Lowes. Even at the end of all the work, which took almost 5 hours, he was very pleasant and explained how the motion activated lights worked. Due to my schedule, I did not go around and get estimates from several places so I don't know where these prices stood in comparison. We are not "THOSE" people that can fix everything ourselves, and I wouldn't tackle anything majorly electrical like this, so I would rather pay a little extra for this kind of service. Again, I don't know if these prices are higher, lower or right in line with others, but I was satisfied with it.
Description of Work: 1) We had 4 fluorescent lights and ballasts replaced with LED tubes that did not use ballasts. 2) Ran constant power to the exterior of the shed and mounted a new motion detected flood light. 3) Ran constant power to the front of the garage and mounted 2 new motion detected carriage lights where there were not any previously 4) Installed a new exterior outlet above garage side door to allow for plugging in Christmas lights. I purchased the exterior lighting that I wanted installed and had it here for him to do the work.

Durham and Sons came out quickly to provide quote and were able to start work the following week. They removed the old system and installation of the new system went well, on schedule. Installers were very professional. Told me every morning what they were going to do and they tied off with me when they left each day. They finished the job on time, per the initial estimate. I would use them again with no hesitation.

Everyone was very accommodating, from the office staff,to the owner and family. The evaluation was done promptly, and along with a verbal discussion of our needs, we were provided with pamphlets, info from the internet, and a detailed estimate with several options. The work started on time and was completed on time. The installers Matt and Zach were very professional and friendly. They had no problem answering our questions. We were very pleased they found an issue with some of the duct work that was preventing adequate heat and air from reaching the far end of a run. All in all, it was a very satisfying experience.

Durham & Sons went out because the pool heater was not working. We diagnosed the main control board as bad, and clearly stated on the invoice there was no way to test the motor without the board being replaced first. We billed him a service call, gave him an estimate, and never heard anything further. No repair work was ever completed by Durham & Sons.

Description of Work: We purchased a new 3 ton Trane heating and air conditioning unit from Durham and Sons and are extremely pleased with the air conditioner and the service provided. Very professional, friendly and courteous people here in my home. And it may have taken two and a half days but they provided 2 window air conditioners to keep the house cool in the middle of the summer. We never were put out in any way while they were working. What a joy! When they were done the owner RJ came out quickly and inspected the work to ensure it was the highest standard and quality as my wife would have done and expected. They also redirected and replaced some of the air ducts in our attic that were not right. The house was not evenly cooling until they fixed it at the same time.

Outstanding. Durham & Sons came out to provide standard HVAC service and to disconnect the electrical for a no-longer-used sprinkler pump system. We were having a paver patio installed, and no longer used the sprinkler system, so we were also planning to need a separate irrigation company come out to remove the pump, eliminate the unsightly pump connections, and reset the plumbing from our well for a hose connection and for use with a potential future pond feature. In addition, we also wanted to have electrical run to the yard for use with the pond as well as a pergola and a shed. Upon discussion, Durham & Sons explained that this was all work they could do for us. Most importantly, Durham & Sons showed a sense of urgency and customer focus by understanding that we were on a very tight timeline. Our pavers would be installed the next week, and of course the work we needed done required lines to be buried prior to the pavers being laid. Thankfully for us, Durham & Sons made the effort to work on the weekend to prepare our quote, and then were able to coordinate all the activities to complete the work by Wednesday of the following week, prior to any pavers being laid. Highly recommend for both quality and service.

The inspection was done promptly and a $89 fee collected. Thereafter, it became very difficult to get the company to provide the estimate. Phone and emails were ignored. When they finally provided an estimate, I naturally asked for a guaranteed start date on the work, seeing as they had proved tardy already. They refused to give a start date until I signed a contract. What would you do?

Response from Durham and Sons Inc
The member called and scheduled a service call for Sept 29 to have Durham & Sons come out and look at moisture issues he was having in his attic. We went out and assessed the situation, taking pictures as well. He was verbally told that day what our recommendations were, the first of which was to have his attic sealed off. We referred him to Alpine Foam for that. Upon returning to the office we emailed the member all the pictures we took. He replied that he had scheduled an estimate with Alpine Foam. Tuesday Oct 4 the member said Alpine Foam had been out, inspected the attic, and he was waiting on their estimate. The member stated he was smelling mold and odd smells, and wanted the units treated and ducts repaired ASAP. We reiterated the attic needed to be sealed before duct work could be completed, and told him we would change the scope of work as he requested. Several calls and emails were exchanged that day, the last one being received at 10pm. Wednesday and Thursday of that week we were extremely busy helping safe up jobs in progress, and our business property, because Hurricane Matthew (predicted to be a category 5 hurricane) was predicted to make landfall early Friday morning. Oct 12 a full proposal, with the changes the member requested, was sent detailing the new scope of work. Oct 17 we received an email from member requesting that the estimate be reworked again to exclude most of our recommendations. Member wanted to move forward with the work without solving the root cause of the moisture issues (the sealing of the attic). He also informed us that the odd smells were now determined to be a dead rodent. On the same day (Oct 17) we revised the estimate as he requested, leaving out all our recommendations, including only the work he specified, and emailed it to him. We still recommended sealing the attic first. We advised the member how long the job would take, and that once we had the signed contract (with the newest scope of work) the office would call to put him on the schedule. The member responded "Other way around. I'll sign the proposal (and happy to pay a deposit) once you give me a timeline". We advised the member once again, once we have a signed proposal, we would actually put him on the schedule. It always has been Durham & Sons policy to schedule after the contract is signed with jobs of this magnitude. This was estimated to take 2 men 3 days. Without a signed contract, the homeowner could decide the morning the job is scheduled not to do the work, and we would have a huge gap in our schedule that we would need to scramble to fill. The timeline is based on the final scope of work, which in this situation had been revised several times. We NEVER ask for money up front, only a signed contract. We collect only once the job is done to the homeowners satisfaction. Moisture issues in attics can be very difficult to solve in certain instances. The member was unwilling to follow through with our recommendations, and unwilling to sign a contract that we had revised at his request several times. Numerous phone calls and emails have been exchanged. We have not heard anything further from this member until we saw this review on Angies List.

We returned from our vacation in October 2016, after hurricane Matthew, and discovered our A/C was not working. We called Durham and Sons for an appointment but let them know our situation was not an emergency and others who they needed to serve in emergency situations could go ahead of us. They gave us an appointment for the next day and was very responsive and timely. Our situation only required very minor attention to the A/C system ... but the technician was very helpful and checked out the entire system, inside and outside. We are very appreciative of the responsiveness of Durham and Sons in getting our A/C working again as well as teaching us how to troubleshoot the system in the future.
