Durham and Sons Inc

Durham and Sons installed a new A/C system in our home about a year ago. A few days ago, I noticed the house wasn't cooling off and the A/C outlets, while blowing air, weren't blowing cold air. I called Durham and they sent out a repair person about 4 hours later. Since this was going to probably be warranty work, I was pleased to see them respond so quickly. The problem was identified and repaired at no cost to me. So far, both great installation (which I reported last year) and prompt service. Highly recommended!

My dryer died after they left. I called them and said that the dryer had quit. They said, no, it had been inspected before they left. They came back and checked again. They checked the prongs in the outlets and told me that I was getting the power. They said at the time that they previously had tested it; it may have been on its last legs and just decided to die now. Hence, I got a new washer and dryer. Their service call was $85 and they charged $5 for the fuel. I am kind of neutral on them as I cannot remember anything that was outstanding about them.

I chose this company because of the good rating they had on Angie's list but as everyone can see i had to give them an F for the simple reason that I phoned them on 7-13-2011 spoke to someone named Tammy who told me they would call me back shortley on that same day with the info I needed and an estimate and I never heard from them again. When a business says they will call you back they are expected to do so, and so many of them don't these days. Is it because they don't care or just plain forget ? In any case I will look for the work I needed to have done elsewhere.

Greg was very professional and explained what was required. The system was low on coolant and he tested for any leaks and found none. We discussed a yearly maintenance contract which I will consider.I chose Durham & Sons based on what I found on Angie's List: Over 60 reviews with a total of A. I can see why and would recommend them to anyone.

This company is outstanding, nothing but the best. The company personal and the owner of the company were very professional. Their goal was to ensure the air conditioner gas unit was installed and working to the owner’s satisfaction. I could not ask for a better company.

We had Durham come out to provide estimates late in 2010, but we couldn't get them on site due to our scheduling conflicts. We called them back in May and they were ready to go. Mr. Durham doesn't seem to forget at all who he talked to and what the estimates provided were. Once we came to our decision, they were ready to go to work. They started with the outside getting the slab ready for the new condenser. They were always prompt in the morning and worked tirelessly. The best part also was on Day 1, they install window units to ensure you are not uncomfortable during the transition period. Mr. Durham consistently came back to the house to personally review and accept the work before it was complete. In fact, the city inspector came before he could do a final review. The inspector made some required work statements and RJ had his guy there the next day to complete it. Absolutely flawless and the way a homeowner expects from true professionals. They were great and they will get all my business.

I have used them several times even for some electrical work. They are really good. They explain everything in detail and their price was reasonable.

I have been a licensed certified Florida General Contractor since 1958. I make this statement to justify the validity of my comments. A good contractor is once that gets the work done as specified on time and in orderly manner. When the job is done, except for the results, you wouldn’t know he had been there. Everything is clean and left the way it found. This is especially true in remodeling projects and in addition the owner’s routine is hardly interrupted

Gave me a complete inspetion of home with corrections needed to bring HVAC system into code. Started and completed job on schedule. All work professionally done and cleaned up. This is the second major ducting job that Dirham & Sons has done for me and I am very please with their work

The house had been empty for 60 days with workman painting, doing general household repairs, etc. in preparation for placing the house on the rental market. I unexpectedly had to move my 92-year old mother and I into the house in mid-September. After a couple of days it became apparent that the a/c was not cooling the house uniformly. I called a competing firm to have the unit serviced, which they did, and to provide a proposal to replace the unit, which they did not do. The cooling in the house continued to be uneven and the competitior was being unresponsive, so in early December I contacted Durham & Son, who had provided electrical work for me in the past. Within a couple of days, one of the owners was on site. He thoroughly evaluated the existing system, duct work, etc. and provided a proposal which included how to apply for appropriate tax credits, FPL credits, etc. The work was scheduled for 12/27, which was a bitter cold day for this area. The team arrived on time, worked diligently, and cleaned up after themselves. A few days later, the owner returned to conduct his own inspection. The service provided by the owner, the installation team and the office team totally exceeded my expectations. I should point out I have a small window during the day in which to get tasks done because my mother is in a day-care facility. The office team and the installation team both worked with me to ensure that my scheduling constraints were accommodated. I recommend Durham & Sons for both heating and a/c, as well as electrical work.

When we moved back into our renovated/ partially renovated house at the beginning of JUne, 2011, it becoma quickly clear that the current air conditioner unit was not sufficient to meet the demands of the house. My husband spoke to a neighbor who confirmed our call to Roger Durham and sons was a good choice. the difficult part was waiting almost 2 weeks before everything was in order to proceed, but they brought 2 emergency window units the same day until we could get our unit installed.

Jerry called me personally to setup a time convenient for me so Durham could install a GFI in my garage since the last time they were here, they didn't have a white one which matched my decor (if you can call a garage's furnishings, decor). :-D The service tech arrived punctually at 9am this morning. In addition, he double-checked an outside GFI Durham installed back in March to make sure it wouldn't trip again: it did once since March. Overall, I am pleased with their turnaround time and courteous follow-up.

He did not have another white GFI to replace the one in the garage. I was very surprised that the electrian did not have a stash of different colored GFIs or outlets in his truck. Naturally, I did not want a non-matching one so he did not replace it. He did not offer to come back the next day after he got a white one. I'd be hesitant to use their services in the future.

They were honest up front and personable. They have a lot of experience in their field and are very trustworthy.

They did a great job. We got a coupon and we spent about $7000. It is probably the best company that I have dealt with ever since I built this house in 1993. I didn?t have any problems or hassles. What we said from the beginning was right through the end. There were no changes, arguments or discrepancies. It was a pleasure doing business with them. The price was reasonable for the amount of work they did and for the air conditioner that they put in which was a very high grade one. Their quality and workmanship were both excellent. Their responsiveness was very good. I would use their services for any other air conditioning problems that I ever have.

Jerry, the electrician, was personable, courteous, and professional. He quickly figured out the problem and returned in the morning to finish the job before it got too hot. He finished even quicker than he thought he would, and the charges were very reasonable. I'd say my money was well spent, and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend Durham and Sons to anyone looking for household electrical work.

The contractor knew from the start what to do and my issue was resolved in minutes.

What can you say about a great contractor? My 12 Year old home had a cheap, contractor grade, air-conditioner/gas heater system. It was low efficiency and high maintenance. It stunk...It cost me over $1000 in repairs over the last 8 years and could not cool the house well, even after an expensive 'tune-up'. MY Bidding Process: Bidding Process - Four Bidders: I had several (4) contractors bid a new system before Durham & Sons came for their estimate - they were the 4th. They were the only ones who ACTUALLY WENT INTO MY ATTIC, and review the ducting system. After their bidding review, they knew about as much about my system as I did - and were able to make intelligent suggestions for a new system. Also, I was asked my opinion on what I needed and could afford during the bidding process. Bidding Process - Maintenance Ageements: I had the advantage of having a close friend, who works in the HVAC business, review the written bids with me. I avoided the '10 year maintenance' portion of all contracts - per his advice. In his opinion, these contracts depend soley on the reliability of the equipment that's installed...they generally do not cover equipment replacement cost...and only cover labor. Furthermore, these contracts are difficult to enforce and are typically not honored 'when push comes to shove'....So I discarded all 'Maintenace Agreements' from all bids. Bidding Process - Desision: I went with Durham & Sons after my review of the bids. They supplied a written bid that was VERY CLEAR. There were fewer ambiguities in the bid as compared to the other bidders. Durham's bid included re-configuring the distribution of air flow throughout my home and re-sizing the attic ducting appropriately. It provided the TRANE equipment, which was highly rated, and had good standard warranties, Durham's bid also included several other smaller improvements that are beyond the scope of this review - but as the owner of several Florida homes, I know they matter. (System drainage to discourage termites, raised compressor pad, etc) So, I went with the highest bid - only 10% higher than the lowest bidder (for the 16 SEAR AC and High efficiency Gas Heat) - but with premium equipment and the most improvements. The Installation process: The installation guys were at my home THE NEXT MORNING - as promised - to begin the installation - and tearing out my old system...I can't say enough about the speed and professionalism of the installers...this is a pretty invasive process...they need to be in your house, in your attic, in your breaker box...basically...in your face...and they did it politely and gracefully...really nice. My wife didn't even lecture me afterwards! My installation took 2 days...but they didn't leave me in 'the lurch' - and had my heating (it was 'Winter' in Florida) ready for me. The Results: "Pretty": I'm not really obsessed with 'pretty', I'm usually happy with 'functional' - but the installation and the new TRANE are very attractive. The new components are the best looking things in my garage AND in my back yard! The outdoor unit (the compressor) is huge, much larger than my old low-efficiency contractor unit - but it is beautiful - I'm not kidding - the components really look good...functional art... Air-Distribution: As I said in the Bidding Process section, the distribution of air conditioning in my home was aweful. The Master bedroom and one of the other bedrooms didn't get good A/C and were hot in the summer - and cold in the winter - with very low 'air-flow'. BUT NOT NOW! When Heat or A/C is on these 2 rooms now get so much air volume that it will slam the door shut if the bedroom door is near to closed when the heat/AC turns on. My wife no longer complains about being cold in the bedroom (...on winter mornings) Efficiency: Sorry I can't comment on this yet. The A/C has run maybe 3 or 4 times since it was installed (it's March 4 as of this report) and although the heater was run about as much, or more, than last year, (Florida City Gas bill says we were a few degrees COLDER, on a monthly average...) the gas bills were nearly the same as last year's bills. I cannot make a fair comparison Overall Satisfaction with the contractor: Regarding my experience with Durham & Sons, I guess that 'Wonderful' is my conclusion. Durham & Sons were great... Beyond the control of Durhan & Sons is the quality and efficiency of the TRANE system. It's beautiful, it works great (so far), but I need another hot FL summer to decide - just haven't had enough time....When I accumulate a few hot, summer A/C bills I will have a good, 1 year, synopsis!

We spent about $5500 with all the rebates and everything else. I was referred to them by another friend of mine. They did a great job and we were very pleased with them. They did a lot of changing in the attic with the duct work. Since we went to gas heat, we had to have a new pipe put on the roof. So, they had a roofer out to get that done. They also had the electrician come out and the boss came out every day to check up on everything. They did a miraculous job and cleaned up well. He was terrific. There was also a $100 coupon that we got. If need be, then we would use them again.

Very Satisfied. We purchased their Annual Maintenance Agreement which in addition to preventative maintenance service to our heat pump twice per year provides priority service in the event of an emergency. During a recent cold spell we discovered that our heat pump was not functioning properly. We called Monday morning at approximately 8am and the technician arrived at approximately 9am and diagnosed the problem. The part (outside fan motor) was replaced with a factory part under the manufacturer warranty at no cost to us. Technicians performing preventative and diagnostic services have always been professional and courteous.

From start to finish - intial interview and estimate to clean-up at the end of all the work - Durham & Sons personnel, to include the owner, RJ, provided outstanding service. All the work was carefully executed, and each and every step was checked and re-checked to ensure it met all required standards. RJ visited my home every day his people were working, to ensure things were being done to his exacting standards, and the men who replaced the compressor, tore down the old air-handling unit and built/installed the new, did the ductwork, and installed the new air return did those standards proud. They were prompt, polite, careful, respectful of my property, diligent in their work, and careful in explaining everything to me.

They were okay but I'm not sure if I would use them again. They were mediocre. We now have a really, really loud system in our house and they have not been very helpful at fixing it. They sent people out on several occasions to look at it. I've been told several different reasons why I am getting the sound. One guy walked in and said he thought the refrigerator was louder than that and he didn't see why I thought it was a problem if the refrigerator was so loud. Essentially I have come to the conclusion that they didn't do it properly and they could have changed a few things that may have cost a little more in the beginning but I would like for the sound to go away. Now they are telling me that I would have to pay far more than it would have cost if they had just done it when they did the job. I wouldn't recommend them.

They came out and checked the system. They honored a discount for me being an Angie's List member. I was very happy with the visit, I actually joined their service plan. The young man who came out was very neat and clean. He was very professional and actually showed up a few minutes early.

This is the best managed company I hace ever known. They ar professionals!! R.J. inspected the system, Gave me chocies and quotes an recommended what he thought a system that would meet my need after discussin what i wanted. They set a start date and keept it and finished on date they said they would. R. J. came over with the installers and instructed them on the installation and inspected.the units to make sure they were correct and complete. He came back at noon and at 4.30 pm to see how they were doing. Thesetwo young men worked quicly didnt need help or supervison When is was in bussiness I would Have treasurd workerslike them.Icant say enough good things about them R. J. gave a final inspection and came back after aweek or so and made sure all was well THANKS TO A PROFESSIONAL and a good company.!!!

We were in need of a new A/C system. I obtained several bids, but ended up choosing Durham & Sons. First, one of the owners actually came out to inspect our current system which also included an evaluation of the air outlets vs returns ratio. None of the other companies bothered to do this. They also put in a new slab where the condenser unit was located outside as the newer unit would barely fit on the existing slab. The other companies did not comment on this either. They also recommended a rebuild of the indoor closet where the air handler was located. Again, none of the other companies commented on the need for this. The work was completed in a timely manner with particular attention to detail with daily inspections of the ongoing work and the new system works wonderfully. Overall, I?d say their bid actually came in the lowest considering the extensive labor-intensive rebuilding they completed to address shortcomings of the initial system?s design. Other companies would have charged extra over their bids. Durham & Sons is the most professional service provider I?ve had the experience to use over the years. For what it?s worth, many of the homes in my neighborhood have been having A/C systems replaced and some of the other companies have done low quality work. If you are in need of a new A/C system, you?d be foolish not to include Durham & Sons on your list of potential bidders.
