Earthworks Landscape

Landscaping, Mulch and Topsoil, Lawn and Yard Work,

About us

For 35yrs Earthworks has been designing and installing South Florida landscapes for all budgets and all types of tastes. Larry Dieterich is a certifiable plant freak whose passion for unusual and interesting plants makes for unique and longlasting landscapes. Having traveled throughout the world researching and collecting unusual palms, plants, bromeliads and aroids I am bored by the mundane and predictable pallete so commonly seen in the average yard. This is not to say i install plants so rare they require specialized maintenance and watering. I believe a good landscape design should serve the test of time, be in scale with the area of work, have strong "curb appeal " and is easily maintained. And of course have moderate to low watering needs. I am known, at least in name, by nearly anyone worthwhile in the south florida nursery, plant and landscape world. Several photos of myself can be seen in the foremost authoritative text on palms," An encyclopedia of cultivated palms" by Paul Craft (my best friend).I have written many articles on landscaping and design for a home improvement magazine. Insured and licensed, I occasionally charge a small deposit($100-200) for a landscape sketch, which is refunded against any work contracted, (provided the work is contracted in full). I am Earthworks... the head hole digger, designer, rock placer, truck driver, delivery boy and my own worst critic. All attributes that ensure your work is installed as best it can be. Warranty policies; Plants want to live, even in a vacant lot there may just be weeds but plant life is evident and unavoidable. If a plant we install dies there is a reason and a solution. Numerous factors are at play in the urban environment, it may be our fault or it may be your fault and depending on who, what and where the fault lies determines the approach to a resolution. Labor is a commodity we can replace, the dead plant may not be. However service is the single most memorable quality a client refers to, and Earthworks is commited to prompt reliable service. Rock work and boulder installation as well as waterfall work is a special talent of Earthworks. A huge fan of Graham Stuart Thomas, Larry "sees" elevation and rockwork as an asset when and where it is feasible and more importantly, be esthetically appropriate. Not as an afterthought or an "add-on" to compliment the final invoice! But I do not do multi-colored mulch/gravel or cheesy little stacked stone walls around the base of a palm!! Budget is usually criteria one to most clients and I am mindful to accomodate the plant design and selection within the desired budget. However, if that budget is unrealistic for the area to be covered I will work with the client to stage the project or, phase down the scope of plant sizes and spacings. I charge an hourly labor rate of $105 for a crew separate from the plant and materials cost. My Nursery, is a ten acre tropical paradise replete with a 25 foot swing over our alligator inhabited pond. Visitors are welcome 7 days a week provided they call for an appointment and children are welcome...to weed anything! The important part of selecting any contractor is establishing a level of trust. I'm Larry and I thrive on trust. I did not choose this profession for the money making capabilities it provides, or the short hours and health benefits. I do it because I love it, I strain to be pragmatic and realistic in my design and plant selections. I have 10 acres of plants so I understand maintenance..believe me. More importantly I know plants and what works and where to get them and how to make a yard look amazing, all within a reasonable budget. Please read the reviews here on AngieslList, I am not the fastest landscaper but possibly the most serious and I greatly appreciate your taking the time to read this rant/Bio. I hope you might consider me for your landscape project to whatever degree that may entail. Sincerely, Larry Dieterich.

He seemed very enthusiastic and knowledgeable about plants and landscaping. I was very impressed by his ideas. However, I did not have the work done by him because after he came to my house and spoke with us about our plans, he took pictures and said he would have drawings and estimates with in 1 week. After several phone calls, emails, and text messages and several weeks of trying to get in touch with him, We never heard from him again.
Description of Work: I chose this person based on the reviews. We were putting in a pool and needed landscaping around pool. We also wanted to have the front of our re- landscaped.

I did in fact do a sketch which was mailed to the client as they made it clear they had NOT made any decision but were getting bids. I sent my pool contractor to them also whose idea they took but not his price and can only assume they did the same with my design. This is the first contact I have heard from them which is odd because they have my email. This will be the last FREE estimate I give, once they have your ideas they just bid it out to any lawn cutter with a shovel...very frustrating.

Maybe something is wrong, I don't know. 11/18/13 Still have not heard from Larry. He has not responded to e-mail or phone. His phone recording says that the mailbox is full. So something may have happened to Larry. I don't know...
Description of Work: Larry did finally show up, talked about what he could do, we came to an agreement. He was very slow to do anything. When he did, the lights were not good, not enough light. I agreed to increase the power. He put in another transformer. I have not seen him since. He doesn't respond to my e-mails.

Everything went wonderfully!!! Larry is one of the nicest and most knowledgeable landscaping people I have ever met. His passion for interesting and unusual plants and his creative ideas breathe fresh life into a project instead of the usual, mundane landscaping plans using the same, tired, pedestrian flora recommendations. Larry is patient and willing to do a project within a reasonable budget, even recommending stages to the project to fit within whatever budget is provided. Larry is courteous and professional. He is also an excellent communicator, whether by email, text or phone and has been promptly on-time for all of our meetings. We also took Larry up on his offer to visit his nursery. We were amazed by the magnificent variety of palms and plants he displayed that we had never seen before. Our project has starting with the cutting and removing of some of our driveway to make room for additional plantings. Larry and his helper arrived right on time and worked fervently and diligently at cutting the driveway and removing the pieces. This was the first step in our staged landscaping project and Larry?s work ethic is incredible. Not only does he talk the talk, he also walks the walk. Rarely will you see someone work as hard as Larry does! We are looking forward to the additional stages of our landscaping project and based upon what we have seen so far, can recommend Larry with exuberance and confidence! Additionally, based upon our interactions with Larry over the past two months, we can only assume negative remarks that have been posted are based either upon confusion of a similarly named service provider or a lack of communication from the clients.
Description of Work: Discussion of a landscaping plan, discussion of plants to use, discussion of job segments, concrete cutting (driveway area) and removal of the concrete to enlarge a planting bed to allow for expansion of landscaping.

I thought I responded to this review. Well what the client isn't telling you is that he is of the ilk...a palm and plant freak. So it was he who made the job a breeze. The enthusiasm and support of each client is critical to the success of each unique project and it is this synergy that produces the best results...this is a FACT! Thank you You both.

My bottom line was to create a backyard landscape, that looked like it belonged there. Meaning, I was tired of the typical household landscape that have a plant here, a nice tree over there, decorated with mixed stones and mulch and colorful plants that specifically looked placed with no flow. That sums up my old yard. We wanted a natural looking landscape. I told Larry this, but I had no ideas on how to accomplish this. I never questioned Larry during the process, and trusted him from our first meeting. I'm not an expert landscaper, Larry is, so we let him run with his ideas. We actually never got a second estimate because we felt so comfortable with Larry and the job we knew he'd accomplish. We started with the statement palms for the yard, and then built around them. During the job, one of the aspects of Larry's work that really sticks out, had to do with the trees he used for the yard. He picked big, healthy palms that shine in the backyard beautifully. We have great cover and privacy from our neighbors as this was a concern that Larry handled as well. We finished up with ground cover, sod and annuals that complete the look of the yard. It was truly exciting to come home from work and see what had been accomplished that day. And we were never disappointed with the trees/plants chosen. Not to be long winded, but we loved our experience with Larry and it hasn't ended with the backyard. We will be using him for our front yard as well. Regardless of a service that is provided, when hiring a company, everyone will have a different opinion. Given our personal experience with Larry and his company, we have nothing but the highest marks directed towards his expertise, vision, drive, and execution for the job he performed. And he was a pleasure to work with.
Description of Work: Complete landscape in our backyard. Removed all shrubs, trees, and bushes that builder had thrown in. Re-routed irrigation system, placed new sod, mulched and remodeled the entire look of the yard. Larry designed, shopped for the "right" trees/bushes, and used his expertise in creating a beautiful and unique, manicured backyard that we absolutely love.

redid our whole yard and he never gave us a price, he seemed very knowledgeable about plants etc --we are newer to Florida some of the work was magnificent but he did not respond to email txt or phone calls --and over the summer while we were away he never returned a call --he had said he was going to do maintenance for us monthly when we returned the yard was so overgrown and over planted that we had to hire another landscaper to help us straighten it all out

The clients, with separate last names, paid consistently on time for two invoices and on the third stated they were not going to spend more than X. As the next project continued the client filing this review demanded more and more work be installed. Ultimately I was not paid over $5,800 in labor and plant material and the client continued to call requesting maintenance. But the garden looks amazing and I have the photos to prove it!

Earthworks came in with a crew and quickly cut back the yard, created beds and removed bed that blocked the view of the house. The final result was beautiful. They also discussed with us the use of native plants and removed plants that were not native to South Florida.

As stated this client was attempting to place their home on the market but it was visually obscured by low branches, high shrubbery and ill placed plantings. They were kind enough to listen to my opinions and then trusted me to follow through with the appropriate corrections and even the highly skeptical Realtor was impressed with the result. I am always grateful to those who listen to my advice and then allow me to perform the work they've sought my expertise for.

(Member name removed) was one of my first AngiesList clients who only hired me for the special 3 hour labor with 3 men which we did. He then expanded the job to include designing and planting the front. This was also completed and both he and his wife told me how fabulous it looked with a palm I had leaned out over a newly made berm. I have never heard from him again until reading this review. I would have appreciated a call to discuss his garden and as for maintenance it is clearly stated in both my services description and I tell people verbally, I do NOT do maintenance. It sounds to me like he assumed I owed him follow up free maintenance and as for over billing my prices are average to below average for all tress and plants. These "all F's" reviews are notoriously an indication that communication was the issue, not the work!

It went very well. We blocked off zones and worked on one zone at a time over a period of months. the yard looks wonderful and we are always getting compliments on it. We worked together once he presented his ideas and geared the beds toward being self sufficient. They need very little upkeep..just a little weeding from time to time. Larry is a master at what he does.

Although we have not done the job yet, we are going to in the near future. Funds have been an issue lately, but when we can, Earthworks will do the job, and I hope it will be before year's end. I will not take up time to have anyone else look at our yard because I hit the jackpot the first time. Larry is a pro's pro, and his confidence, decades of experience and deep intelligence are hidden behind his jovial personality. He is the kind of guy I want working for me.

Larry was great from the start. He has a very nice way about him very down to earth and honest while at same time having a vast knowledge of anything that can be planted. I trusted him immediately and he was very up front about the costs and details after walking with me around my neighborhood asking me to point out the types of plants and trees I liked. he left having a clear idea what I liked and gave me the pros and cons of different plants. we were able to agree easily on what the basics would be. Like I said I got a very good feeling from the "get go" with larry and knew "he knew what to do". The work was done in a very efficient and punctual way with larry checking in to make certain I was good with every detail. The front yard looks amazing and we could not be more pleased!!! We will definitely will be calling larry back in the future for new projects. I would HIGHLY recommend larry to anyone who wants a very creative knowledgeable landscape designer who you can count on to please.

Once again it's nice to collaborate with people who "get it". The clients couldn't have been easier to work with, not for...and they were realistic with regards to accepting what absolutely had to be done, namely the sprinklers put in working order, and then what could be done given the site, the proximity of the Ocean and the desire to keep to a reasonable budget. By sticking to a simple and basic design together we achieved what will be a long lasting planting with minimal maintenance. I am very grateful to have been able to do a little for a couple who have given so much. I look forward to the next phase....

This was the second time we have contracted Larry to work on our yard. Last year he focussed on the large front yard; this spring we tackled the side and back yards and pool area. We are enormously pleased with the changes and plan to ask Larry back again both for mid-year care and maintenance needs as well as additional work on the remaining side of the house, perhaps next spring. Obviously we are extremely satisfied with Larry's work and the overall effect on our home. Specifically, Larry created some large beds around several groves of palm trees in the back yard, providing interest to an otherwise simple lawn which looks out on a wild, open expanse of wetlands, next to Lake Okeechobee. He dug additional beds along a fence on the east side of the house, selecting new plants for both summer and winter color, texture, fragrance as well as overall size and layering to provide screening from the neighbor's yard. The most dramatic new item was an in-ground planter that Larry dug in our pool area to correct for some drainage problems which had resulted in an unsightly and uninteresting corner. This turned out to be a more ambitious job than I had anticipated, but Larry worked very diligently despite some uncooperative weather. The pool deck has been transformed with the selection of tropical plants Larry chose to install, the drainage problem is gone and overall the pool deck remains cleaner and a pleasure to behold. We are considering putting another, perhaps slightly smaller planter, in another location, next year. As was the case last year, Larry was enthusiastic and professional. He showed up when he said he would and he and his workers have a work ethic that is hard to beat. After we had discussed what we were hoping to achieve, I let Larry make the necessary decisions, choosing the plants and locations according to his knowledge and artistic sense. Based on our experience last year, I was confident he would keep costs down where possible. I got way more than I expected and it is a delight to take a stroll through our yard, sit around our pool deck or just look out our windows. We have noticed people taking pictures in front of our house and have received a number of compliments. It was money extremely well spent.
Description of Work: Larry removed old bushes and re-sodded where needed around our pool, dug some new beds in the side and back yards and crafted a large in-ground planter within the pool area. He put in a wonderful assortment of interesting plants, bushes and ground covers, corrected some irrigation and drainage problems and touched up some previously planted areas in the front yard.

Just incredible! People pay me money to do what I love...lots of money, and then they praise ME for it. Once again the credit goes to the client, first they trust me with the front yard and then do twice as much in the back.... To anyone reading this I can only say I wish everyone who spends money on their garden gets the pleasure of its use, whether that be sitting in it, walking through it, or just viewing it from inside. The fact that so many of my friends (clients) have expressed the pleasure they perceive from our collaboration is the highest compliment they could bestow. Overall Larry was very professional, he took time to educate me in regards to what kind of weeds , and what type of weed and feed to use to rid them in the future. He gave me recommendations that not only make the yard look better, but also will be low maintence. It took several months, but I would rather have someone who took the time to do it the right way, and really get rid of the weeds before laying the new sod. He really cares about his work." Thanks Larry"
Description of Work: Larry was very professional when he came by the look at the yard , which at the time was full of hydrocortyl or $ weed/ and nutsedge which at the time I didn't have a cue what they were. I admit that it was a longggg process . Hovwever it took a longtime to get rid of all the weeds. Larry came by to spray, and spread weed & feed at least a dozen times, I feel he went above and beyond in regard to prep work. He also recommended that I place pine mulch around the peripheral to eliminate weed whacking ( that made us very happy). This created a nice visual flow around the yard . I would recommend Larry to all my co-worker and friends, but don't get in-patience, if you have a rather large yard that's fully of hard to kill weeds like the dollar weed. It will take awhile. Overall we are very happy with the outcome, the new look is great.

We hired Larry based on the Angie's List reports and upon having him and several others do estimates and preliminary ideas. He was not the low bidder, but we liked his attitude and ideas. We gave him essentially free rein, and we're glad we did. Larry is an artist in the garden. Our yard has gone from nondescript to a showpiece that everyone in the neighborhood still comments on. Guests and real estate agents who come by are all impressed with what he has wrought. It's a delight to the eye just driving up to the driveway. We are very pleased that we chose him.
Description of Work: He re-landscaped our home. He started with our boring, same-old, same-old yard and transformed it into a tropical paradise that my wife and I are calling our private, little Garden of Eden. He and his crew removed perhaps 75% of the old plantings and replaced them with FAR more interesting plants. He believes in gardens that have great visual appeal from both the house and the curb and are sustainable and low-maintenance, and that is what we got. Along the way, he fixed what was a barely functional irrigation system and replaced non-functional lighting on the garden.

Three months later: We have had a fabulous experience with Larry who owns Earthworks. He has great design vision and loves what he does. He landscaped our front yard so it not only looks beautiful but is sustainable on its own..needs very little work. He made sure the textures and colors through out the yard enhance each other. He landscaped the backyard to give us complete privacy while still being able to view the lake. He planted finger palms on the side of the pool and started a succulent garden for me. I will make it my own but know I can call him for advice if I need it. His quality of work is great, his enthusiasm even greater. He will do whatever you ask him but appreciates clients who let him fly on his own, however he will always confer with you before doing any work in your space. He and his crew work quickly. He is such a nice man, that to show us how he appreciated not only our business but our faith in him, he planted a gorgeous Oil Palm in our yard ...his gift to us. We recommend him highly.
Description of Work: Larry got back to us the day we left a message for him and stopped by the next day. The guy is amazing. He IS a plant. We are currently working in phases so we still have landscaping to do but so far he is perfection. He is full of wonderful ideas. He is not a cookie-cutter landscaper so if you let him fly with his vision he will create wonderful things. He knows his plants and trees and has been able to move plants around and place them where they will do well rather than getting rid of them. He has cleared out a lot of old plants, has trimmed back ones that are overgrown and has mulched a tremendous part of the front yard. He has moved a beautiful gardenia tree to the back of the house so the ocean breeze sends the fragrance right to us at the pool. He will do whatever you want him to but has lots of ideas to add to whatever it is you want. he is going to clear a small patch of grass and turn it into a succulent/ cactus garden. And he works at lightening speed. We can't wait to see the rest of the house when he is done. Will you all posted.

I got in touch with Larry at Earthworks through Angie's List. He called me back very soon after I left him a message. We scheduled an appointment for him to come over and see my house and yard. I liked him right away because he arrived on time. I live in a two story 1920s Mission style stucco home in downtown West Palm Beach just off of the intracoastal. I have never really done anything significant to the yard from the time I purchased the house in the early 90s. I have a two mango trees, an avocado tree, some palms, and shrub/hedges along the fenced in back yard that were already here. The back yard also has a couple features - a little patio area for dining and trellis/gazebo in the back - that I've added over the years. Larry and I talked for a long time at that first meeting for him to get an idea of what I wanted my yard to look like. I didn't have a real definite plan in mind and would be relying heavily on the guidance of the landscaper. Fortunately for me Larry was that guy. He totally got the old Florida feel of the house and how the garden needed to compliment it. Even though I was not sure of exactly what I wanted, I knew things I did not want. We agreed that I did not want the yard to look like a cookie cutter landscape job. I knew I wanted something easily maintained, drought tolerant and an emphasis on native plants. He asked me about my budget and I had no idea what any of this would cost since this was a new experience for me. Again, I was lucky that Larry is the kind of person he is - very honest, practical and frugal! He helped me achieve the look I wanted without overcharging me for things I didn't need. I was glad that he worked with almost everything that was existing and did not just come in with a bulldozer to start from scratch. Anything that was practical to keep, he kept. The project started at the beginning of the summer and evolved over the past few months. I wasn't in a great hurry to have it done overnight so I was able to be patient as we went through the various phases needed to get the end result. He was very good about letting me know where we stood with the budget. He is incredibly knowledgeable and artistically creative with a great eye for the big picture but at the same time he pays attention to the little details that can make such a difference. When it comes to choosing plants I liked the way he would give me a list of possibilities and I would research them so I could make an informed decision. He wasn't a diva about the creative process. He kept me involved all along the way but was very direct if I wanted to do something that would not work. After a little time spent with him you know that he loves what he does and it's not just about a paycheck. He urged me to drive around my neighborhood and other areas like mine to photograph landscaping that appealed to me. We discussed what I photographed and he advised me about what would or would not be good choices for me and why. He is very accessible. When I call or email him with a question or concern he is prompt about getting back to me. Most of the big stuff is done now although it will continue to be a work in progress. The garden is already a beautiful transformation and as it grows and fills in it will only get better. It feels so good to look out the windows to my yard every morning or sit outside with a cup of coffee and enjoy the scenery. And now with the recently installed lighting the garden is equally beautiful at night. I will definitely be working with Larry and Earthworks again. It is so nice to deal with someone who loves what they do, who actually shows up when they say they are going to and does what they say they are going to do. Without a doubt I would highly recommend him to anyone who wants to work with a real professional!
Description of Work: Earthworks put down new sod in the front and back yard. My old Chicago brick walkway was reconfigured from front to back. Trees were transplanted. Existing trees and shrubs were pruned. My old irrigation system was revived and updated and an existing water feature was moved and set up in the back yard. They planted a large number of trees, shrubs and plants followed by fertilizing and mulching. He installed landscape lighting with path lights along the walkway and spot lights on some of the trees.

The job went very well from design to execution. See above for all details. We plan on using Earthworks Landscaping for any future jobs we might have and highly recommend Larry Dietrich. He will listen to your needs and make recommendations based on his decades of experience and in-depth knowledge of plants that will work in various soils and lighting situations.
Description of Work: We have long had a problem area in our landscaping. The area right in front of our house has poor soil and some existing plants that have outgrown the space. We asked for bids and received some excellent proposals. It was our preference for native plants that motivated us to follow up further with Larry Dietrich of Earthworks Landscaping. We quickly learned that Larry not only had an in-depth knowledge of natives but he also shared our enthusiasm for their application in landscaping. We also were pleased at Larry's quick responsiveness using email and text messages. We used these tools to great advantage in evolving the final design from my original ideas and Larry's knowledge of real world practicality. We approached the job in stages and asked Larry to remove the giant cardboard palm cycad that had overgrown its location. He kept us updated as to when he would arrive so that we always knew where he was and how soon he would be on the site. He showed up with his truck and a tractor that had front forks to lift the very heavy plant out of the ground after he and his helper had dug the roots out. Since this went so smoothly we decided to go ahead asking Larry to take our concept and create a final plan which he did very quickly and efficiently even though the process involved a lot of communication between us by email and phone. Larry understood the soil and lighting requirements of all the plants. He also had an in-depth knowledge of native plants by genus and species as well as common names. When we finalized the design Larry used his knowledge of available plants at other nurseries throughout South Florida to locate one large Bird-Of-Paradise which would be the focal point of the design. After he located and acquired that plant he used his own nursery stock for the natives that were the remainder of the plantings including Zamia or Coontie which we wanted specifically in the plantings. He again kept us informed as to scheduling and showed up when he said he would. The actual planting and mulching was done efficiently and was completed in half a day.

Response from Earthworks Landscape
Just a note to the reader; what makes this review extra flattering is the fact that member had landscaped 90% of the yard himself with great taste and forsight for future effect and growth. it was easy to compliment his work by building on the foundation he had lain years earlier.

The project went about as planned although lengthier because of weather and coordination with other contractors. Larry kept us informed throughout. As an artist, Larry has his own rhythm which may not always equate to speed of execution, but the end results are stunning. If you want fast, call the larger commercial guys and they will plunk down crotons and coco plums in a couple days and your yard will look like everyone elses. If you want something different and beautiful, let Larry work his magic even if it takes a little longer.
Description of Work: We had a new pool and deck installed. The original landscaping quote was a reasonable price, but rather uninspiring - the usual commercial grade stuff. At the same time I was doing my own research on some different plants, found a nursery that had them and they offered Larry's name as someone to contact for a design that would be more unique to really show off the new pool and create a great lakefront setting. Larry (Earthworks) has exceeded our expectation in almost all regards. We have a beautifuly landscaped pool area that our neighbors have already begun to comment on. It will be fun to watch it mature over the course of the next few years. The plants Larry used are unique, healthy and conducive to low maintenance. In addition, he spent a good deal of time putting the right plants in the right locations to properly screen unwanted views while leaving the lake views accessable. Larry clearly has great vision and passion for what he does. We wouldn't hesitate to use his services in the future or recommend him to our friends.

Overall everything went very well! We started with a first meeting to discuss ideas, budget and time line. He presented us with a landscape design and a quote but we had to wait several months before we could get permission from our condo corporation to complete the work. Once approval was received, Larry accommodated us very quickly as we had to make a special visit to Florida to be there while work was being done. Larry always kept us informed of the procedure and kept in close contact at all times. Larry has fabulous ideas and great skill in design. He also listened to me for feed back and any preferences that I had. The work was done very quickly and very meticulously. We are extremely happy and wouldn't hesitate to recommend him again.
