That was all right and then they tried to sell me something for $700. The other thing is, I wasn't to thrilled with them, because they were only here for 30 minutes. After he left, I could hear the unit running in the garage and it wasn't doing that before. I haven't called them back. I'm going to call someone else. If he had done everything that he was supposed to, he would have been here longer than 30 minutes. He got here at 10:30 and left at about five after 11. He did check to see that it was working and he told me that I had some mold in it. Other than that, he didn't do anything. The guy that was here last year cleaned the coils, he didn't do any of that. All he did was make sure that the electrical and things were working. He took the cover off and checked inside of it, but he didn't clean the coils or anything. He said that it would cost $799 to do it. That was triple of a company that I had do it two years ago. The person was super nice, but I don't feel that the job was performed properly. I shut the unit off in the house and the unit in the garage was still running. Before he serviced the unit, I could shut it off in the house. He didn't do half of what the other guy did. It was supposed to be a big deal through Angie's List. I didn't realized it until I was ready to leave. I didn't get the service that I should have gotten. He told me that he was finished and gave me the paper. He talked to me and his attitude was great. It says, cleaning of the coils and you can't do that in 30 minutes. He did check the panels, compressor, and he didn't clean the coils like he said he did. He marked that he did do it. He did call me and tell me that he was having a problem finding the place, he was 30 minutes late. I do give him credit, he did call and let me know that he was running late, I can't complain about that. He did call me way before he was supposed to arrive. He was very professional, I can't complain about it. We would have to come to an agreement before hand.

Dear Member, We regret your experience with Bay Area Heating and Cooling was viewed as less than stellar. After reading your comments, we pulled your records in an attempt to understand your frustration. According to the checklist, the item our service tech recommended was a UV System, which will help stall growth in your handler. As far as the time of the visit, most tune-up can be completed between 30-60 minutes. As you pointed out, your visit was at the short end, but all items were checked according to the checklist. Full coil cleanings are not included in our standard or Angie's List tune-ups. These require the refrigerant being backed-down and the coil being pulled. The price you were given for this service was correct and without knowing exactly what the company did two years ago it is hard to explain the difference in price. During a standard tune-up if the coil is found to be dirty, a spray clean will be administered. Reviewing your checklist, the coils were confirmed clean if not sprayed. We're unsure why you can hear the unit in the garage. Regarding the air handler continuing to run after the unit is shut off could have to do with your air handler being variable speed. It is not uncommon for a variable speed air handler to run several seconds after shut to flush cool air and moisture. The above said, know that your satisfaction is priority one. Know that we provide consistent training to our service team and reiterate a message of doing the job correctly and completely. We would like the opportunity to make things right, and invite you to contact us to look into any issues you may still be having. If you choose to go a different direction, we wish you nothing but the best. The Bay Area Heating and Cooling Team

Great super fast service. AC started not cooling so we ordered the diagnostic. The tech was able to determine what was wrong and fixed it during the service call. He was very honest and we felt comfortable dealing with him. He had the parts we needed with him so there was no need for multiple service calls. The diagnostic process and the fix took less than 2 hours.

That didn't work out at all. He looked at the unit and said the repair would be four to five hundred dollars. I actually have a home warranty company that covers it. they told me if i didn't fix it it would make the fix more expensive. I am going to wait and see what happens with it.

Dear Member, After reading your review, we pulled your file. It appears the issue with your system was related to the blower wheel, which was starting to wobble. Our technician was correct, if the blower motor become too out of balance it can damage other parts. The above said, we regret your experience with Bay Area Heating and Cooling was less than stellar. If you have not done so already, when it comes time to replace the part we stand ready to assist. If you choose to go a different direction, we wish you nothing but the best. Technician called to say he was on his way. He looked at our AC unit and listed some potential issues. His explanations were a little confusing. They seemed to be helpful and he even suggested we have the insulation in our attic looked at before doing anything else. I appreciated the honesty, but by the end of the conversation, 10 minutes later or so, it was advised that we look into getting new unit. We went from the freon levels being to high to having our insulation looked at to a new unit in about an hour and a half. I gave them a good rating because the service was prompt and quality, and the technician was pleasant and helpful. Overall we could have done without the winding sales pitch road but the info provided up to the purchase of a new unit was helpful.

The technician showed up on time and was dressed professionally. He had a good attitude and was polite. The service call was completed and he notified me that the start motor for the compressor was drawing too many amps. He suggested a capacitor to assist with the motor start to help improve the life of the unit. He installed the capacitor in a short amount of time with no problems. In total, the technician was here for maybe 45 minutes, but I have peace of mind knowing that my air conditioner is in good shape for the rest of the summer. I would definitely use Bay Area Heating and Cooling again!

The AC company I used to call (company X) tried to rip us off by saying we needed a whole new system. This was a system that X themselves installed just four years ago, and on which they said we had a ten-year warranty. X quoted us several options ranging from $4k to $9k. Bay Area came out, tightened up a few fittings, and said the unit was fine. It has worked perfectly since then.

I had returned from vacation to an 80+ degree house and no A/C. I called first thing this morning and got on the schedule for them to come between 2-5pm this afternoon. The technician finished some morning appointments early and called me 3 hours early to see if he could come early. The technician was Phil and he was great. Very courteous, neat, professional and knowledgeable about what needed to be done. I would definitely used this company again.

It didn't go very well. It wasn't overly specific, he gave me three different things and three different prices that kept getting bigger. Then he said, if I was his family, he'd recommend an entire new system. So this was mismatched. I called one of my guys and he fixed the whole thing for 300 dollars. So either he didn't know what he was doing or he wanted me to pay more that I needed to pay. I wasn't overly impressed with him. I'll never use him again. He was very pleasant but he just wasn't very good at his job. He was there on time.

As with all of our customers, we take special care in reviewing your system and offering the best solution(s) to any issues we find. This said, our technician suggested you replace your current AC system based on the 3 items in need of replacement; the capacitor, hard start and line drier. Additional, potential issues sooner rather than later were also part of the reason a new system was recommended. It is important to note that a new system recommendation is just that, a recommendation, and it is entirely up to the customer whether they chose to repair or install a new system. Without knowing what the follow up technician did or did not do, it is tough to fairly and accurately comment on the difference in price. It should be noted, however, that while we're not always the lowest, we work diligently to stay price competitive. The above said, we wish you nothing but the best. I came home from work at lunch on Monday, June 15th, and noticed that the house seemed warm. When I looked at the thermostat the room temperature was up to 81 degrees, although the thermostat was set at 77. I walked around back and noticed thatthe fan on the outisde unit was running, however the compressor was not. I turned off the unit at the thermostat and checked the breakers in the electrical panel, but nothing was tripped. After about 10 minutes I turned the thermostat back on and the unit came on and once again the compressor was running. Not wanting to be without AC, I picked up Angie's list and went through several names. When I called Bay Area Heating & Cooling I explained my situation to the nice young lady who answered the phone. She said that since the unit was working again she thought it would be best to set up a repair visit for a system diagnostic for which they had an Angie's list special of $59.95. The soonest they could come out would be Thursday, June 18th, between 1pm and 5pm, and that someone would call when they were on the way. She also said if it went out again sooner I could call their emergency service and explain that I had an appointment scheduled for Thursday and they would try to expedite the call if that happened. On Thursday afternoon at around 4:20pm I got a call from Mike, the technician, who said he was on his way and would be here in about 15 minutes or so. Mike arrived at 4:40pm, and I showed him the air handler in the garage and the compressor in the back yard. Mike checked the thermostat in the house, then stuck his thermometer in the duct work in the garage where the air was entering the attic. While looking at the air handler Mike said he was probably going to have to replace the capacitor on the blower motor in the air handler, but it was one of their "least" expensive parts! When we went around back Mike pulled the cover of the unit and proceeded to take some measurements. He shut of the unit and checked a couple things, then turned it back on. When the unit came back on the fan was running, but again the compressor was not. Mike said the motor start capacitor would have to be replaced, then informed me that the unit also needed a "Hard Start" capacitor installed as well, since it appeared someone had removed one from the unit previously. The price for these two parts was $188.44 and $264.46 respectively, and he asked did I want them replaced? I said well obviously I want the unit to work, so he proceeded to make the changes. When the compressor still would not restart he expalined that the compressor was frozen, and used the garden hose to thaw it out. He also said the unit was a couple pounds low on freon, and that he would "throw-in" the freon which usually cost $94 a pound! When Mike drove away that evening around 6:15pm I had paid a total of $694.57 for parts and service. The same night after Mike left the unit was again running without the compressor coming on. Again I reset it and it came back on normally. We had to go out of town the next day for a week, so I was very nervous about coming back to a stiflingly hot house. As it turned out the unit has been running since our return, although the temperature still does not seem to get as cool as it previously had. Since that time I have done some research to see about the cost of the various replacement parts and was pretty shocked at the mark-up here. In particular, the "Hard-Start" capacitor was a Rectorseal T05 Part #96503. The charge on my bill for this part was $264.46. This same part can be had on eBay or Amazon for $35 to $45, in some cases with free shipping. Now even if you add in installation labor, which probably took all of 10 minutes, it's pretty hard to justify that kind of mark-up. The other two replacement parts were $181.72 and $188.44, again both easily found motor capacitors. After all of that, the original diagnostic was still included on the bill at $59.95. I asked if they wouldn't take that off since repairs were performed, but was told that was a flat fee. There was no additional Angie's list discount. I always have a hard time writing a negative review, especially when a company seems to have garnered such high praise from a large number of fellow members. Still, I notice on a lot of the reviews here that relate to price the standard response is pretty much "we're not always the lowest, but we try to be competitive." I can't say whether or not that is true in this case, but I do have to say that the price gouging does seem a little excessive in these replacement parts.

Dear Member, Thank you for taking the time to write a thorough review and the kudos related to our quality, responsiveness and punctuality. Per your comments, you had some issues (in hindsight) with our pricing that we felt it was important to address. You mentioned our standard response "we're not always the lowest, but we try to be competitive." We stand behind this statement and especially the part you left out which reads "we work diligently to stay price competitive." We do more than simply try, it's more of a conscious effort to monitor, measure and provide fair market pricing. Our pricing is up front and flat rate. Again, in some instances we are the lowest priced option, other times we are not, but we hope either way those we serve will view the service they received worth it. Note you will not find the language "cheapest" or "lowest price" in any of our advertising for the above reasons. The pricing you shared for your job was correct. And the fact that many parts can be found at rock bottom pricing on eBay is too. Understand our final price includes overhead and time in your home, which for our visit with you was roughly 1.5 hours. The gift of refrigerant was legitimate. Many HVAC companies used to add refrigerant for free, but over the last few years refrigerant pricing has risen significantly and that has changed. Most, if not all companies, charge for refrigerant today. The above said your satisfaction is paramount and we regret your experience with Bay Area Heating and Cooling was viewed as less than stellar. If you need any additional clarification, please feel free to call and speak with operations manager and he will be happy to answer any questions you may have. We're glad to read your system is doing it's job to keep you comfortable. We hope you will give us the opportunity to serve you in the future. If the opportunity does not materialize, we wish you nothing but the best.

The smell was not during heating and did not smell like dust on heating elements so I was concerned about a wiring problem. I wasn't actually there when they came and did the check ( my husband was), but what they did to check it seemed very thorough and the supervisor addressed all my follow up questions and concerns, explaining how they rule out electrical shorts or other potentially dangerous problems. He told me they use equipment to test the electrical current which would show aberrations or fluctuation if there was a short or exposed wire, and they did a visual inspection of all the electrical components. They did not find anything wrong and when I asked about the possibility of the burning smell coming from the attic being drawn down through the handler closet, the supervisor offered to send someone to check the ducts if after a while the smell was still present. It dissipated within a couple days so I don't know what caused it but I felt reassured there was nothing wrong with my system to be worried about.

The annual service that I had the company come out to do was fine. But I was then told that my A/C needed an additional part that would likely fail soon, although it was still operational at the time the service was performed. The young man who did the service seemed very friendly and honest, but later I began to wonder if he had just sold me additional work that wasn't entirely necessary. I really don't know, so I can't say for sure that unnecessary work was done. It's just hard to know who to trust these days. I think that I'd rather hire a smaller company where the owner also does the work. They tend to be lower priced and more reliable, I find.

Response from Bay Area Heating & Cooling Inc
Dear Member, Thank you for the honest review. Our technicians are trained to discover current system issues and legitimate, potential ones. This said, our tech saw a issue that could lead to a breakdown in the not-so-distant future and made a recommendation based on this. Note when a part is working, a recommendation is just that, and the customer is certainly welcome to pass. To be clear, your system's health and your comfort are always top of mind when recommendations are made. We certainly would leave ourselves open to negative feedback if we said nothing and a week or two later the said part breaks and your ac goes down, especially in the middle of the summer. No, we are not always the cheapest, but we do work diligently to stay price competitive and provide top-notch customer service. We also use factory approved parts, which can be more pricey than their generic counterparts, but they also tend to perform better and ensure your system stays within warranty. Please note we are the family owned and operated business who started in a van over 15 years ago. Integrity, quality and good old-fashioned hard work have helped us grow into one of the more established and respected companies in the area. Repeat customers who have trusted Bay Area with their heating and cooling needs year in and year out are also a huge reason why we are who we are today. We have not and never will lose site of our family roots and consider our customers to be part of ours. The above said, we hope you will give us the opportunity to serve you in the future. If not, we wish you nothing but the best.

My AC unfortunately went out on a Sunday afternoon on one of the hottest and most humid days so far. I called the emergency number and got a call back quickly. The service technician arrived within 2 hours and quickly took care of the work needed and I was cool and comfortable 4 hours after my call. Jerry was great and I very much appreciated this companies responsiveness and service on a very hot and stressful day.
