Dean and his assistant, Chris were punctual and diligent about their work. They were also very personable and friendly. I felt comfortable enough to leave them alone in my home with out any reservations. Dean called when he said he would, came at the time he said he would and was completely reliable (so rare today). They did a great job with a great attitude. I will have them back for future projects. Dean is an honest person with a lot of knowledge!
Description of Work: Dean came to give an estimate on replacing some tile, my mailbox, rotten wood in my carport, and motion lights. He also moved an existing wooden gate to another side to accommodate my gutters and added base trim to 3 large posts.

Dean and Chris did a great job. I didn't know them before I found them on Angie's list, but I must say they are very professional. They showed up everyday on time which really impressed me because contractors are generally notorious for not showing up when they say they will. Dean and Chris are very knowledgeable and if you choose them for your upcoming job you really can't go wrong. Keep up the good work Dean and Chris and I will be calling you for the next project that comes up in the future.
Description of Work: Dean and Chris framed in an existing archway with french doors and blended in drywall to match existing texture on wall perfectly.

This piece of furniture is a wonderful addition to our home! After the bookshelf installation, we were amazed how unique and functional this final project turned-out. We all smiled as the bookshelf easily slide across the doorway to hide the room. The bookshelf looks natural in either the open or closed (hiding the doorway) position. Friends and neighbors who knew of the doorway, smile at the "form and function" of the project. Anyone unaware of the doorway would never know it was there when the bookshelf is "closed" over the doorway. Dean was enjoyable to work with and is a pleasant, professional, and polite person. We would definitely have him work on other projects. We wish we had other doorways we would like to hide from view!
Description of Work: Design, construction, and installation of a "hidden door" bookshelf. As customers, we wanted to hide a second bedroom doorway so that the room could not be viewed from our other living areas. Mr. Dean Bille easily understood our desires and designed a rolling bookshelf and the canopy that it was to glide and be secured. He and his helper Chris completed the entire project in less than a week. Dean made several trips to our home to show us stain options and to measure and design the bookshelf. He had never designed such a project and he seemed to take on the challenge with interest, joy, and a sense of humor; after all, how many customers want to hide a doorway from view with a sliding bookshelf!?

He was good, but his assistant was terrible! The two jobs that Dean did on his own were really well done and I was pleased. I continually had to ask him to go over the work that the assistant did, which was always wrong. I had asked him not to use the assistant, but he said he had to use him because he was on his payroll, and he had to use him on jobs so that he wasn't sitting idle. One of the things that was done wrong was that the assistant put the handle in upside down on one of the doors. He actually asked me if I would just deal with leaving the handle upside down! I went to a home repair store and they were surprised that a carpenter would make that kind of an error. I suggested that the assistant call the store to have them walk him through how to repair the handle, but he would not. He did pull the instructions back out and finally managed to get it fixed. He complained that the whole morning was wasted because of this problem, but it was his fault! He did damage to the existing paint when he pulled the frame off of one of the doors, and now I have to repaint the door and fix damaged drywall around the door. The service would have been fine had it not been for the assistant and all of the unsupervised amateur work that he did. I would only use Dean Bille again if I knew that I was only going to be getting Dean.
Description of Work: They did an assortment of carpentry work dealing with doors. Dean constructed a shelving unit in my master closet, and he did a very good job. He also cut down the front door and put a threshold in for me.

Response from DEAN BILLE
This is Dean Bille writing in response to the above report of the member. I was not going to respond until I realized that I needed to at least defend my employee Chris Brown. Chris Brown is my one and only employee. He has been with me for ten years. He is honest and fair, treats people with respect, and does quality work. It is my opinion that the member had a preconceived idea that my employee was not capable of doing the work that she thought I should be doing. She would not give him a fair and honest chance to do the work. She was in his way, on his case, and simply would not leave him alone long enough to get the job done. In this type of an environment it is very difficult to do the job well. She would not leave either of us alone and was just waiting for the smallest mistake to be made so she could correct us and have us do it over. Do to her constant interference, what should have been a half days work, turned into to a full day. I have good ratings with Angie's list. Most often I have straight A's. I hope those who read her report will take the time to read my many other very good reports.

I emailed Mr. Bille with the work we needed to be done, he came out and gave an estimate. When we were ready to do the work, he was on time and did a good job. The dock wasn't exactly like my husband wanted at first and he came back out and fixed it. We are both happy with the work.

Dean and his partner Chris did a fantastic job. They arrived on time and even called the day before to confirm. The thing I like most about Dean is his respect for the "little guy" (the smaller jobs), not just the big expensive jobs. For example- my service work was a minor $325 job and so I was originally scheduled farther in advance for completion. But when I emailed Dean and stressed the urgency in moving up the service date because of the interior water/carpet damage, he politely rearranged his schedule to get the job done sooner. I really appreciated this, as I know he had much larger jobs he was also trying to complete. Dean and Chris are both friendly, professional, courteous carpenters with exceptional skill. My work was done on time, and with the quality promised. I would recomend Dean to anyone, and I am happy to have found a reputable carpenter for all my future home improvement needs.
Description of Work: Repair of a rotting wood door frame with associated interior damage. The rotting was so bad that whenever it would rain, water would get inside the house and completely saturate my carpet. Damage was approx 8" up both sides of the bottom of the door frame, all wood under the threshold door plate, and approx 1 foot inside the house to the structural floor under the carpet. (SEE ATTACHED PHOTOS FOR BEFORE/AFTER)

I had initially contracted with one of Tampa's large "Kitchen and Bath" design stores to do this work. They communicated poorly, then told me after a month they couldn't match my existing cabinet doors. I'd already ordered my refrigerator and it was being delivered in three days. I was very frustrated and found Dean on Angies List. He came over the same day, cut out the cabinet opening so I could get my new refrig installed -- all before agreed to hire him! He sent a full quote later that day, which included cutting down my existing doors so they would match. I hired Dean and he completed the entire project the next week. He is a true cabinet maker/carpenter -- not one of these big companies that buys cabinet pieces and puts them together in the back room. If you want good work, at a fair price, I can't say enough great things about my experience with Dean.
Description of Work: Dean reconfigured two kitchen cabinets, raising one cabinet to install a taller refrigerator and boxing out another opening to install a new beverage center. Dean reused my existing cabinet doors so everything still matches perfectly.

The estimate and the knowledge he had were very reassuring
Description of Work: We contacted Dean to get an estimate for building a cabinet to fit in with our exiting built in units. We was very prompt in returning our call and coming to our house to form an estimate of the job. He followed up with the estimate and possible variations and stains that would compliment our existing cabinets. We didnt end up using Dean for this job but would readily consider him for future work.

We started on Monday AM nice and early with the demo of the bit of kitchen that was left from the original kitchen that was 50+yrs old. Everything went smoothly and he worked great with my subcontractors. He was out around 3pm everyday and other than a brief lunch, they both kept moving. I couldn't have asked for anything better. It was slowed down by a day of rain, but even in the drizzle, they worked the best they could. The whole thing was over Saturday and I have no complaints about the work done.
Description of Work: Dean and his employee had the huge task of taking over a custom kitchen renovation that was abandoned. A former contractor had left the kitchen 1/2 done and I was high and dry for 3yrs. Dean met me to see what the project entailed and quoted me a great price to get my kitchen done. I had my own plumber and electrician take care of their parts of the puzzle. He had to retrofit some old cabinets with facing and construct new cabinets to finish the kitchen. He also built doors for the whole thing and built a counter top and backsplash.

The job went well. Dean gave us an estimate of how long it would take and that was pretty close to how long it took. He came to our home twice to have us look at some stain formulas that he had come up with. He was very patient with us when it came to getting the right color.
Description of Work: We first used Dean Bille when we couldn't get anyone else to fix a problem that another company created when they installed our "custom" cabinets. He did an excellent job!! We used him this time when we remodeled our master bathroom. He did a super job. They look beautiful. He also stained our new doors and hung them back up for us. Again, he did an excellent job.

From what I could understand it was a tricky area to get to for repair. Dean did some great work for me before & I asked him to fix this. He came when he said he would (even though I was not home) and was finishing just when I returned. If I had missed him, I'd have mailed (or delivered) a check to him.

As usual the overall experience with Dean and Chris (Dean's assistant) went great. They have done a good amount of carpentry work on our old home during the previous 2 years, including wood siding and this current job. My wife and I frequently receive complements on his work. This particular job included planning and building a tin roof over our deck, as well as adding steps to the deck. They built a sturdy frame and thoroughly sealed the tin. And the steps flow perfectly from the deck boards to the ground. The job included installing an outdoor ceiling fan and patching a section of cornice molding. The deck and roof could not look better. Dean and Chris both have exceptional demeanors, work hard (tackling both large and small projects), and are willing to accommodate specifications. They show up as scheduled, the work is done within the estimated period, and they leave the job site clean. We highly recommend Dean Bille for wood working projects.

Great experience. The deck was done in 3 days. The old one came out on Day 1, the new one was framed on Day 2 and it was topped on Day 3. Dean, his helper and their part-time assistant showed up right on schedule and were a joy to have around. They dug through some serious oak and ficus roots when framing the deck. As I sat watching one day I felt tremendous relief that I hadn't decided to tackle the deck myself. I had forgotten the clothes washer sewer line that runs underground near the deck area and so of course it broke during the post hole digging. The guys dug it up and fixed it at no extra charge. Without asking they also realigned my back door knob, which hadn't shut right for years. (Thanks!) The bathroom sink was clogged before they arrived, clear when they left. The deck is beautiful and perfectly level, and I was impressed enough to trust Dean with my next project: A leaning garage in need of repair, which I'll detail in the remodeling category.
Description of Work: Dean tore out my old deck and put in a 16x24 deck, plus a 4x4 deck connecting the main one to the garage. It is framed with pressure treated lumber and topped with cypress. (While doing the deck, he and his workers also put a new ceiling in my hall and bathroom, painted the ceilings, patched two holes in the plaster walls and reattached a couple of air conditioner vents. That second list of projects (actually the reason for my initial subscription to Angie's List) cost $775.00. Dean knocked $200 off if I did all of it at once, lowering the actual deck cost to $3,335.00.

The project took just a few days, and the change was evident even in the first few hours, as Dean and his crew righted the frame of the garage, all of us holding our breath as 80-year-old timbers creaked in protest. Even before the new siding went on, I could see the emerging shape. My Leaning Tower was once again going to be a solid little garage. I felt grateful that Angie's List had led me to Dean Bille, who managed to perform this garage miracle on a budget that I could actually afford. He knew, as did I, that others might have replaced every piece of lumber and started from scratch, rebuilding the garage at a much higher cost. But he said he believed in doing "what's necessary." Kinda refreshing, huh?
Description of Work: The stand-alone garage of my 1920s bungalow was my own version of the Leaning Tower, listing so badly that a plumber didn't want to work inside it, afraid it might come tumbling down on him. It needed a carpenter. I asked Dean about the garage while he was at my house building a deck. He hadn't tackled a job quite like that before but was game. He bought a "come-along," a cable device used to pull the front of the garage into plumb. He and his hard-working helpers screwed plywood on the front to hold the plumb in place, then refaced the plywood with siding. They also removed rotten siding from larges areas of the sides of the building. They put a row of hardiplank siding on the bottom, where the garage comes into contact with the ground. All the trim on the front of the garage was replaced and the side entry doorway got, for the first time in years, an actual door (a stylish 6-panel one, at that). The only thing not included in the price was painting, which I wanted to do myself.

Dean was a pleasure to work with from start to finish. At the consultation, he took the time to talk through the project and what we were trying to accomplish. He made several sketches and we discussed different options to make sure he was clear on what we wanted. He sent a written estimate within 24 hours and it was in the range of 3 other estimates we got. We chose him out of 4 contractors because he was, by far, the most prompt and easiest to work with. He came back one more time to go over the plans to make sure we were both on the same page. We did have one slight alteration to the plan, which he adopted with no problem. On the day of installation, Dean showed up first thing in the morning with a helper and got the job done by the end of the day. They left our property clean and free of any construction debris. The end results exceeded our expectations! We will definitely be calling Dean again for any more carpentry needs.
Description of Work: Dean took down the existing wrought iron railing on the front porch. He built a new landing and stairs that extend the porch and redirect the entrance. He installed new support posts and built a new railing for the porch and stairs. In the back of the house he built a new deck and stairs over the existing concrete landing and stairs. This, too, has a new railing around the porch and stairs. All of this was done in pressure treated lumber.

Contacted Dean Bille and told him we needed some carpentry done. He came when scheduled and we walked around the house, checking wood and noting where it needed to be fixed. He gave us an estimate the next day, and we scheduled a date for him to begin. He estimated two or three days for the work. He arrived with two assistants, and they completed the job to our satisfaction in two days.

He was unable to compete with the others we got bids from because he could not do everything we needed to do. He does mostly carpentry work and we needed someone to come do painting, drywall, etc. Since he had to sub out some of the work, his prices came in higher than others. He seems to be very competent and willing to do whatever you need done.

Always arrived on time (if not early). Every single day they cleaned up completely (including vacuuming with their own vacuum) before they left. Never brought food or beverages inside although I wouldn't have minded. Extremely good work and I felt comfortable enough to leave them here alone. That says a lot after other experiences I've had.
Description of Work: Built a closet under the stairs (involved disassembling a wooden louvered door, cutting it to size and reassembling it), closed in a closet that had it's rear open to attic instead of having a wall, fixed all kinds of long cracks in plaster, made cabinet doors (very nice) for a bath, re hung a door, replaced panelling that some painters broke and left broken, finished a doorway (left unfinished by same painters), replaced wooden siding that had rotted, installed a piece of wood that was somehow missing, fixed window sills that had termite damage, replaced a 4x4 support post on porch (the whole post - previously repaired by someone cutting off just the bad part and putting a short piece in), fixed various holes, built extra shelf and a few other things.
