Service was performed on 7/21/18. Have had maintenance contract with Smyth for approximately 3 years. Biannual maintenance most recently done on 7/10/18, Called for not cooling. Came out on 7/21/18. No significant consideration for maintenance contract. Upcharge on parts. Amazon listed parts (2) between $30 to $60. Was charged $217 and $163 respectively. Total bill was $425.00. Repairman was fine. AC worked. Charges were exorbitant. What is the point in paying a maintenance contract, then paying the maintenance bill , $160, then paying exorbitant prices for a repair. Obviously my relationship with Smyth is over. Nila Wilbur

They went above and beyond with service. They did a great job.
Description of Work: My drain inside and outside the compressor in the unit was clogged. He cleaned it out and changed the inside filter. Then they checked the Freon and he also checked the outside unit to make sure everything was ok in addition to what he had to repair.

I had a problem with them, because they installed an air conditioner, and had a shut off valve with it, and he didn't install it, and it kept running, and wouldn't shut off. Messed up part of my wood floor. They owe me a lot of money. They didn't install what was in my contract. They came right away.

My elderly mother contacted Smyth Air for an estimate to fix/replace a 10 year old A/C unit in a townhouse. Smyth promptly inspected the unit and provided a cost estimate for a new 13 SEER unit. Since the model numbers for the air handler and compressor were listed on the estimate, I was able to price the unit myself from a local dealer. The 13 SEER unit was very basic and cheap, so I asked if Smyth Air would give me a breakdown of the cost---labor for the install plus materials. They said that it was not "company policy" to provide estimates in that way. Thankfully, I was able to get another estimate from another company quickly and ended up paying $600.00 less for a much more highly rated 15 SEER unit.

THE PUBLIC NEEDS TO KNOW ABOUT THIS COMPANY! I RECENTLY HAD SOME REPAIR WORK DONE TO THE DUCTING WHICH CONNECTED THE MAIN AIR HANDLER TO THE EXISTING DUCT SYSTEM IN THE ATTIC OF OUR HOUSE. YOU CAN REFER TO THE REVIEW I LEFT FOR THE CO THAT PERFORMED THESE REPAIRS, PRECISION AIR SYSTEMS, FOR MORE INFORMATION. HOWEVER, THE NEED FOR THESE REPAIRS FINALLY GOT ME TO SIT DOWN TO REVIEW OUR EXPERIENCE WITH SMYTH AIR TO TRY TO PROTECT THE PUBLIC FROM THIS PREDATORY COMPANY! EVER SINCE THE NEW TRANE A/C UNITS WE PURCHASE FROM SMYTH WERE INSTALLED, AFTER WE BOUGHT THIS HOUSE, WE ALWAYS WONDERED WHY A SINGLE SMALL VENT IN THE DINING ROOM MADE SO MUCH NOISE FROM AIR RUSHING OUT OF IT EVERY TIME THE MAIN UNIT WAS RUNNING. I TRIED CLOSING THE VENT COMPLETELY - I EVEN CUT A BLOCK OF STYROFOAM AND PUT IT INSIDE THE TOP OF THE VENT - TO TRY TO BLOCK THE AIR RUSHING OUT OF THE VENT AND REDIRECT IT TO THE REST OF THE ZONE FOR THAT UNIT. BUT IT DIDN'T HELP. I WENT UP IN THE ATTIC TO INSPECT THE SITUATION AND NOTICED A LEAK WHERE THE MAIN BOX WAS CONNECTED TO THE OUTFLOW OF THE AIR HANDLER, SO I THOUGHT I SHOULD CALL OUR REGULAR A/C MAINTENANCE CO, PRECISION AIR SYSTEMS TO CHECK IT OUT. WHEN THE GUY FROM PRECISION SHOWED UP HE WAS AMAZED AT HOW POORLY THE CONNECTION BETWEEN THE NEW AIR HANDLER AND THE ORIGINAL DUCTWORK OF THE HOUSE WAS MADE! HE TOOK PHOTOS, WHICH I WILL ATTACH TO THIS REVIEW. HE POINTED OUT HOW INSTEAD OF INSTALLING THE CORRECT DUCT BOXES WHERE NEEDED, UNDER-SIZED FLEXIBLE DUCTING WAS SIMPLY FORCED INTO PLACE, CAUSING CRIMPS WHERE THE FLEX-HOSES CONNECTED TO THE DUCT RUNS AND THUS PREVENTING AIR FROM REACHING THE REST OF THE ZONE THE UNIT WAS SUPPOSED TO SERVE AND DIRECTING ALL THE AIR, INSTEAD, INTO THE VENT CLOSEST TO THE UNIT, WHICH WAS THAT SMALL VENT WE WERE HAVING THE PROBLEM WITH. HE SAID THE WHOLE CONNECTION WOULD HAVE TO BE REDONE PROPERLY. WHEN THEIR DUCT GUY, MARK, CAME AND AS HE AND HIS ASSISTANT TOOK THE WORK APART, THEY POINTED OUT 1 ERROR AFTER ANOTHER THAT THE SMYTHE AIR INSTALLERS HAD MADE, FROM NOT USING THE CORRECT TYPE OF DUCTING, TO NOT USING THE CORRECT SIZE OF DUCT, TO NOT USING THE CORRECT KIND OF CONNECTORS, EVEN NOT USING THE CORRECT KIND OF TAPE AND STRAPPING! INSTEAD OF HANGING THE FLEXIBLE DUCT GOING TO THE VENTS USING STRAP HANGERS, THAT WERE STILL THERE FROM THE ORIGINAL DUCTING, THEY SIMPLY DROPPED THE FLEX-HOSE ONTO THE FLOOR OF THE ATTIC, ALLOWING THE CONNECTION OF THE HOSE TO THE VENT TO CRIMP AND RESTRICT THE FLOW TO THAT VENT. WHERE THERE WAS SUPPOSED TO BE A BOX CONSTRUCTED OF FOAM DUCT-BOARD, SMYTH INSTALLERS HAD SIMPLY STUFFED UNDER-SIZED ROUND FLEX-HOSE. THIS WAS ALL CRIMPED, CONSTRICTING FLOW TO THE ENTIRE SYSTEM, MAKING THE AIR HANDLER HAVE TO RUN MUCH LONGER AND HARDER (PULL MORE AMPERAGE) TO ACHIEVE THE REQUIRED COOLING OF THE SPACE. FOR SOME OF THE HOSE CONNECTIONS, THEY DIDN'T EVEN BOTHER TO USE A METAL RING CONNECTOR AT ALL: THEY SIMPLY STUFFED THE HOSE INTO A HOLE THEY'D CUT AND TAPED IT! WHERE THEY DID USE THE METAL RING CONNECTORS FOR THE HOSES, THEY DIDN'T EVEN BEND THE TABS ON THE INSIDE TO SECURE THE RING TO THE BOARD ON ANY OF THEM! WHEN THE REPAIR WAS FINALLY COMPLETED, WE COULD FEEL INSTANTLY HOW THE ENTIRE AREA IN THE HOUSE WAS GETTING PROPERLY COOLED. AND SINCE THEN, WE HAVE NOTED THAT THE A/C UNIT IS RUNNING WAY LESS THAN BEFORE: I'M SURE WE'LL SEE A BIG DIFFERENCE IN OUR ELECTRIC BILL. SO, THAT'S JUST THIS ONE SINGLE ISSUE WITH SMYTH. IN ADDITION, WHEN WE WERE STILL USING SMYTH AIR FOR OUR ROUTINE MAINTENANCE SERVICE, AFTER THEY'D SOLD US OUR TRANE SYSTEM, THEY CLAIMED THERE WERE ISSUES IMMEDIATELY WITH THE UNITS THAT WAS CONSTANTLY REQUIRING SERVICE CALLS. NO PROBLEM, THEY'D SAY, IT'S COVERED BY THE WARRANTY... EXCEPT THE SERVICE WAS NOT COVERED BY THE WARRANTIES, ONLY THE PARTS! ONE TIME, A ZONE WASN'T COOLING CORRECTLY AND THE SERVICE TECH DISCOVERED THE DIGITAL THERMOSTAT WAS NOT FUNCTIONING. NOW THIS WAS NOT A BIG, COMPUTERIZED THERMOSTAT, JUST A SMALL, BASIC UNIT WHICH HE REPLACED IN 5 MINUTES. ON THE INVOICE: $278.00!! THE TECH ALSO LEFT THE OWNER'S MANUAL ON THE COUNTER WHICH I CASUALLY PICKED UP TO READ AND NOTICED THAT THE UNIT SHOULD HAVE BEEN COVERED UNDER IT'S NORMAL MANUFACTURER'S WARRANTY. WHEN I CALLED TO COMPLAIN ABOUT BOTH ISSUES, SMYTH AIR CONCEDED THAT THEY SHOULD NOT HAVE CHARGED FOR THE COST OF THE UNIT AND TOOK $78.00 OFF THE INVOICE BUT LEFT THE $200 FOR THE 5-MINUTES IT TOOK THE TECHNICIAN TO SNAP ON A NEW THERMOSTAT. ANOTHER TIME, 1 OF SMYTH'S "SENIOR" TECHNICIANS CAME OUT TO DO OUR MAINTENANCE CALL AND CLAIMED HE'D DISCOVERED A "LEAK IN THE MAIN COIL" OF OUR BIG 5-TON UNIT OUTSIDE. HE EVEN TRIED TO SHOW ME THE LEAKS: HE SHOWED ME LITTLE BLACK DOTS ON THE SURFACE OF THE COIL HERE AND THERE AND SAID THOSE WERE THE EVIDENCE OF THE LEAK. I'M NOT AN A/C TECH, SO WHAT DID I KNOW... BUT WE GOT A REFERRAL TO HAVE A DIFFERENT A/C TECH COME OUT TO CONFIRM THAT THE COIL WAS REALLY LEAKING AND HE SAID THAT NO MATTER WHAT HE DID, HE COULD NOT MAKE THAT COIL LEAK AND THAT SMYTH WAS NOTORIOUS FOR DOING THIS KIND OF THING: HE SAID THEY'D GET THE NEW COIL UNDER WARRANTY FROM TRANE BUT CHARGE THE CUSTOMER FOR THE SERVICE CALL TO CHANGE IT OUT. WHEN I TRIED TO COMPLAIN TO SMYTH ABOUT THE KIND OF SERVICE WE WERE RECEIVING FROM THEIR COMPANY, THEY COULD NOT BE LESS CONCERNED. MY OPINION IS THAT THIS COMPANY PREYS ON THE UNTRAINED, UNSUSPECTING PUBLIC WHO SIMPLY HAS TO TRUST SOMEONE BECAUSE IN THIS ENVIRONMENT, A/C IS A NECESSITY. VIOLATING SOMEONE'S TRUST IS ONE OF THE WORST THINGS ANYONE CAN DO AND IT SEEMS THAT THIS IS THE "BUSINESS MODEL" FOR THIS COMPANY. I WOULD ADVISE THE PUBLIC TO QUICKLY RUN FROM THIS COMPANY IF YOU ARE CURRENTLY USING THEM AND TO AVOID HAVING ANYTHING TO DO WITH THEM IF YOU ARE SEARCHING FOR AN A/C COMPANY TO USE: THEY ARE PREDATORS!

Technician could not find a Freon leak or the problem. He added Freon anyway and charged me for it. He did say that some duct work was needed and that he would tell his boss (Jeff). I tried to reach Jeff over the next few days without success. In the mean time the A/C still was not working. I decided to get a second opinion from Gulfstream Cooling given the strange comments from the Smyth technician. Gulfstream was prompt and professional and contacted me over the weekend. They went out the following Monday and found the following. They had to reattach the expansion valve sensing bulb and to recover the overcharge of the refrigerant put in by Smyth. They also found that there is a problem with the air flow that which effects both capacity and efficiency. When the system was installed the existing supply duct plenum was used and is too small. The other item is that the return duct is also not sized properly and sucking attic air from a few leak spots. A coil cleaning was also needed. I have had a maintenance contract with Smyth for severa
Description of Work: Provider was called to check on A/C unit that was not cooling. We have a maintenance agreement with Smyth and they installed the current unit in the last two years.

I made an appointment for a contractual cleaning. When he arrived I discussed some concerns I had with the unit, and he informed me that he would check into it. During the cleaning, the technician informed me that the freon level was low and needed three pounds. Since his visit, my AC has performed well and Smythe is the only company that will service my unit, ever!
Description of Work: I called them to perform one of my two yearly cleanings, as per my service contract, and I also needed several pounds of freon. I have had several different companies service my AC throughout the years but Smythe is the most honest, and professional, and their customer service is of the highest standards. They will remain as my AC company for as long as they are in business. They are that good!
