Woodruff Construction LLC

Woodruff Design & Remodeling, LLC, of Orlando FL, (a.k.a. "Woodruff Construction of Jacksonville FL") makes a great first impression. The owner appears friendly and engaging, and with a great sense of personal pride, touting his NWFA and CFI credentials, and showing pictures of previous work. The experience that follows however, is quite different. This is a long review, but I encourage you to read it all, particularly the last part... Regarding the installation of hardwood flooring: they did a decent job overall, but they left magic marker measuring marks on the wood in some areas, and the quarter round was cut amateurishly at 90-degree angles on the ends. Regarding the installation of the wood stairs (claimed to be a specialty of theirs), some of the wood work had to be re-done. Also, when the time came to polyurethane the stained wood stairs, Woodruff seemed to have no understanding of how to do this. Their work was totally unacceptable, leaving a rough and very poor finish. I had to hire someone else to come in and re-do their work. His "one week" job estimate took him about three weeks, as there were several days he just did not show up, or only worked a couple hours. Regarding the installation of the stone marble flooring: when it came time to do this work, Woodruff demanded far more money than we had originally agreed upon in our contract (!) I had to hire someone else to do the work, (again), because they refused to do it at the agreed price. Woodruff went as far as to have a work crew show up one morning to do the marble floor installation, and upon demanding a lot more than the previous agreed upon price, and my refusal to comply with those tactics, all those men had to be sent home! But worst of all was my experience with Woodruff installing hardwood planks across the 19-foot tall ceiling of my living room. I provided scaffolding for them, and on their insistence, I rented even more scaffolding at my expense. Then, upon starting the job, the owner of Woodruff said that he needed an extra $600 to remove the existing crown molding. I said that this was included in our previously agreed-upon contracted price, but he insisted he needed $600 more. I protested that this was only an extra 90 minutes of work, and $600 was unreasonable, but he insisted it was somehow close to a full day of work. (?) Feeling pressured, I offered him $300 extra, and he became very angry, and proceeded to rip the crown molding down quickly... taking only about 90 minutes to do the whole removal... (just exactly as I said it would take 90 minutes). THEN IT GOT REAL UGLY AND UNPLEASANT: Although he should have removed the crown molding at no extra charge, as originally agreed, and although I generously agreed to pay him $300 more for this extra 90 minutes of work... he was FURIOUS that I would not pay him $600 more for this extra work he had completed in 90 minutes. He began installing the hardwood ceiling planks very ANGRILY and CARELESSLY... using a nail-gun to shoot nails through the face of each plank as fast as he could, and making no effort to do it neatly... damaging the surface of each plank as he installed them in his angry rage. In hindsight, at that point, I should have told him to stop, and to get the %&#@ out of my home. However, I was weary of dealing with him, and needed the work done as I was paying daily scaffolding rentals, so I said, "Stop. I will pay you the full $600 for the extra 90 minutes of work you just did. But NO MORE surprise upcharges beyond our agreed upon contract price. Understood?" The owner of Woodruff immediately calmed down, and proceeded to install the remaining wood planks across the ceiling in a professional manner. Seriously, this guy is like a "Jekyll and Hyde" multiple personality... nice as can be one minute... but if you resist his surprise upcharges, he will turn on you and get super angry and start doing sloppy work in childish protest, holding your job hostage. I've never felt so uncomfortable with a contractor in my home. He will give you a great friendly first impression, but do not be drawn in by that. I strongly encourage you to pass on this immature, unstable, and inexperienced contractor.

Arturo did a great job which included a great deal of floor leveling, replacing quarter round, tmolding and reducers in previously installed areas. He was able to work the old laminate with the new laminate. The job was a total of two days and he was highly professional and reliable. I have referred him to friends for his great work and unbeatable rates.
