It was a great experience. I had heard about them from friends who had used them. I replaced my mother in laws roof and they did such a nice job even with clean up. She was quite happy with the results and roof looks great. I decided to use them for my house since it needed replacing also. They were all very nice and professional from start to finish. They cleaned up after themselves daily. Roofing staff was experienced (no cheap laborers) and inspectors told me they did a great job and brought everything up to code to deal with hurricanes (being in Florida). They also provided me a detailed mitigation report with pics for me to send to my homeowners insurance. It brought my insurance rate down and I have a nice warranty. Roof looks great. They also gave me a good recommendation on gutter service.
Description of Work: Replaced old roof and flashing and repaired any rotten wood on 2 story house with porches. Installed ridge cap vent. They offered me different options of quality shingles, colors and moisture guards.

Extremely well, from original inspection until payment upon completion, Townsend Roofing went above and beyond the norm as follows. Original inspection conducted during heavy downpours and Drew attempted to temporarily repair existing leak, caulking the leaking roof valley. I measure companies by how they resolve problems. Again, they were superior, responding to my specific concerns which involved Martin performing additional inspection of a soffit area and Javier repairing a leak from underlayment nail which had lodged between the roof planking. Finally, Martin and Drew had to team up to perform a water test to locate a pinhole leak between roof edge and patio cover. Bottom line, they were excellent.

We have done a number of home improvement/updating projects this year which have included replacing our roof after 20 years. One of the best experiences we had with contractors was with Chris Townsend owner of Townsend Roofing, a Jacksonville company. I received a total of five bids and after doing extensive due diligence I chose Townsend Roofing. Townsend Roofing was not the cheapest but was competitive. Every reference I checked raved about how good a job Townsend Roofing did. Although Chris runs a number of his own crews he would check in periodically to make sure things were ok. Chris has his own teams and his team leader was here every day, was great to work with and did an outstanding job. His crew was always on time, very polite and did a great job of cleaning up every day (three weeks after the job we’ve found a total of 2 shingle nails in the yard). The roof is larger than many with a lot of peaks and valleys. Chris explained all of the special procedures his team goes through to do the best possible job. After some final touches, the job was everything and more than we expected. While not necessarily a big selling point for us, Chris did the whole job with no deposit at the beginning of the job. This alone was a big indication to me that Townsend Roofing would deliver everything Chris promised and he did just that.

We were very pleased with quality and professionalism of Townsend Roofing. Chris, Martin, Steve and Drew all gave us good personal service and responded to all our questions and needs for this roofing project. We have a very large roof and they completed it in a timely fashion and promptly cleaned up the project area. I wouldn't hesitate in recommending this company. In fact I have already given their name to several of our friends.

The crew that performed the work on our roof were well trained and worked very hard. They were neat and cleaned up each night before leaving. The entire job took 2 1/2 days. It rained very hard two days after they finished the job and we had no leaks. In the past, after getting every other new roof, we found at least one small leak that need addressing bu the roofer, none, however, were found after this job. Martin, the foreman for the job, is a great representative of the company and obviously an excellent foreman who knows his job. He obviously has the respect of the men in the crew. Once meeting Martin we were confident that the job would get done without issue...It was! Also, Chris Townsend, after the job and without prodding, delivered the completed Wind Mitigation document that I submitted to my insurance company so that I could get a discount on my home owners insurance. I was extremely pleased with Townsend Roofing and would recommend them to any one without reservation. By the way my wife was even very happy with every aspect of this job!

This provider with his outstanding work crew accomplished in three and a half days the complete removal and replacement of my roof. Chris Townsend, owner, and his three man work crew are a rare breed of dedicated professional roofers that installed my new roof, using GAF Timberline HD shingles. Monday and Tuesday, the crew arrived at 8:00 AM and worked steadily to 5:30 PM. This is the time frame my Home Owners Association authorizes contractors to perform work on our properties. The third day, they worked from 8:00 AM until 11:30 AM. On two occasions during the roof installation, a supervisor would appear to check on the teams progress and to ensure my satisfaction with the progress of the job. I had opted for an underlayment upgrade and the additional installation of the GAF Cobra III Vent system. My old roof used two power ventilators and I asked that they be removed since they would not be needed because of the installation of the GAF Cobra III vent system. During the removal of the old roofing materials, it was discovered that some small area of potentially rotten wood was discovered and this was immediately replaced with new plywood prior to the installation of the new underlayment. There are five large Skylights on my roof and two of them needed some adjustments in order to ensure that there would not be any leaks. Rather than overlook this issue the lead roofer called my attention to the matter and suggested that I allow the work crew to make adjustments to the two skylights, which of course I agreed to. I cannot say enough good things about this experience. In the 22 years that I have lived in this home, I have never contracted with another company that demonstrated such excellent business practices. Again, Kudo's to the work crew and to Chris Townsend for an extremely satisfying roof replacement. If I am around when this new roof needs replacement and Chris is not retired, I would have him do it again.

OK, you're probably wondering: why is this guy writing a review that is three years old? I'll tell you why: this is a father / son business I hired and after I caught the son in a lie and I was given a full refund, the father sent me a very polite, and cordial letter apologizing and telling me how many years they had been in business and how highly rated they were with the Better Business Bureaux. I felt sorry for the father and decided the incident would not show up on the Angies List radar. Well, it has been three years and I am still dealing with the same leak. Several roofers have been unsuccessful (though they actually did work that I paid for) and now the latest one has me angry because he will not return my phone calls. So, sorry, Townsend Roofing, I am "leaking" the full story...NPI. After the Townsend son claimed he could do no more to fix my roof, I called two roofers. One merely gave an estimate while one did the same and attempted to fix the leak. BOTH told me there was absolutely no evidence of any roof work done during any recent period. I got up on the roof to see what they were talking about. [Homeowners: it is absolutely imperative that you risk your own neck and get up on your roof to inspect ANY work performed by a roofer. If you can't do that, hire someone - a third party - to inspect it for you!] Sure enough, both separate roofers were correct: nothing had been touched! I took photos and emailed them to the son, Chris Townsend and told him he had lied about doing work on my roof. He did not deny anything. He then asked me if I wanted him to come out and repair the roof: "Are you kidding," I asked, "do you think I can honestly TRUST you?" "Do you want your money back?" "YES!" I received a full refund. No questions asked with a letter of apology from an obviously embarrassed father. Shameful.
Description of Work: He SAID he would repair a roof leak by removing shingles, lay down new flashing around the chimney, seal and caulk in some areas, then replace shingles. He CLAIMED to have done the work then came back when we were here to COLLECT a check. A few weeks later when my roof was still leaking and I called him back, he PASSED THE BUCK by telling me there was nothing more that he could do - I should call a mason to deal with a chimney leak. "You mean you are going to leave me standing in the rain?," I said, "That's it?"

Response from Townsend Roofing & Construction
I have attached documents that back-up what I state below, please go to the Media tab and you will be able to see these. On June 18, 2012 we certainly did make roof repairs to this home. A different roofer re-roofed this home for the previous owner less than four years prior to us making our repair. Since the roof was so new, our repair tech was able to do a great job installing the new shingles so that the repair result was like new. The customer states that he sent us pictures which reflect that no repairs had been made, when in fact we had made repairs and they just did not stand out as anything new. On the morning of June 18th our employee picked up two bundles of GAF Timberline replacement shingles in Sunset Brick and a pail of roofing cement. I have attached the material invoice as well as the signed picking ticket. That same employee then delivered the materials to the customer's home. Our Repair Technician, Miguel (who still works for us) made the repair that same day, Monday June 18, 2012. On June 19th we mailed an invoice to this customer. The customer's check was dated June 22nd and mailed to our office. The customer references receiving a letter from Chris's Dad when in fact it was I, Bobby Townsend, Chris's Mom (not his Dad) that sent this customer a full refund ($475) with a letter stating that we were sorry that he was not satisfied with the repairs that we had made. We sent this refund after the customer later informed us that he was still experiencing a leak. At that time Chris informed this customer that he felt that the leak was coming from higher up the chimney and not a roof leak. The customer references that THREE other roofers have come and none of them have been successful at stopping his leak. I can understand why this customer would be frustrated, but there are so many incorrect facts against us in this complaint. This also further supports our recommendation to seal the brick chimney and mortar joints as the next step to try to resolve the leak issue. I have attached the proof that we did what we said that we would do and not only that, we took the loss of the materials that we purchased and the hours that we paid our employees and gave this customer all of the money back. I would ask that this customer call me at 645-5887 to resolve the facts within this negative review.

It is rare that I am as impressed as I have been with Chris Townsend and Townsend Roofing. From the punctuality of Jason who did the initial inspection, to the crew showing up exactly when they said they'd be there, to the fact that Miguel our foreman finished earlier than expected, I have to give Townsend roofing the two thumbs up, better than I ever expected rating. I contacted three roofing companies to give me quotes on my new roof. One was way over what I thought the cost should be, one didn't call me back for a week and a half after I contacted them on Angie's list, and Townsend roofing who was prompt, courteous, and affordable. Chris actually brought the quote, and paperwork needing signatures to my office instead of making me meet him somewhere, and after the job was done provided me a detailed listing of costs along with all of the pictures and paperwork from my insurance company. I couldn't be happier with the service provided by Townsend Roofing. Wish all companies made things this easy! Matt Stair

Townsend Roofing was fantastic. There estimate was significantly lower than competitors and they did everything perfectly. Weeks after the job was finished my wife noticed a slight asthetic problem and we contacted Townsend. They came right out and fixed it. I have done several home renovations and have only had a few professionals that I would recommend after the fact. The only reason I am reluctant to recommend Townsend so highly is because next time I need roofing work, they may be too busy!

1. My chimney had multiple original construction problems which included: a corroded chimney cap (technically called a Chase Cover); water-rotted T1-11 siding all around; corroded galvanized metal flashing all along the edges, etc. I didn't have any leaks into the house, yet, but it was a close thing. 2. I called 6 roofing companies that all advertised ‘Construction Services’. Two indicated they did indeed do construction services but and quot;we're not offering them now as were too busy doing roofs’. Two others never returned multiple calls. Of the two who replied, I felt most comfortable with Townsend as they were responsive, professional, and they had a dedicated professional carpenter who would do the work. I knew they were very busy doing full roofing jobs, but the fact that they had professional carpenters told me that their business model included 'Constructions Services' and that those services weren't just a way to keep less skilled roofers busy during slack periods like some of the the others seem to. That made my decision easy. 3. A carpenter and a supervisor showed up the day they said they would and reviewed with me what they were going to do before starting. 4. The Carpenter had his entire workshop in a professional trailer towed behind his truck. 5. He started by making sure everything was taken down properly. Then he re-framed the second story (all the 2x4’s from the original framing were unusable). My house is one story, but the chimney attaches to the house on one side and sticks up two stories. 6. The original builders of the house, incredibly, had only toe-nailed in the second story frame to the top of the frame below! It's a wonder that the chimney didn’t blow away in a mild breeze. That said, Townsend used three methods of securing the top frame to the bottom including Hurricane Straps, Brackets, and large screws. I asked if that was unusual to use that many ways and they replied it was ‘the standard way we do things’. I believe they also placed cross braces inside to link each member of the 2X4 frames to each other even more securely. 7. Once the frame was up, they sealed it with insulation and and frac12;” plywood and then covered it with Hardie Panel siding. (The original quote had missed the need for two and frac12;” plywood sheets as ‘backing’ for the Hardie Panel on one side and they called it to my attention and said they would include the necessary plywood no charge as they'd missed it in the original quote. I was impressed.) 8. They removed the architectural shingles all around the corroded flashing while checking for any roof deck damage (of which there was none.) They replaced the flashing with new, much better aluminum flashing and installed new architectural shingles. The new shingle color seems to be a pretty good match with the originals. 10. While up on the roof, they noted my very old TV satellite dish that was still secured to the roof deck and offered to remove it for me. (Something I’d wanted to do since I dropped the satellite TV service a decade earlier but was afraid to as I didn’t want to damage the shingles or the deck.) They removed it, replaced the old shingles with new, and didn’t charge me. 11. They finished everything in three days except for the new roof cap (chase cover) which I had to wait for as I’d special ordered an enameled top that matched the color of my house trim. I had to wait a few weeks, but they secured the top professionally until the new one arrived. 12. When the chase cover arrived, they alerted me immediately and communicated when they would come out to complete everything. The same carpenter came out and installed it quickly and professionally in just a few hours. 13. He sealed up the chase cover all around where the cover fit over the trim and siding and then used the same sealing material (a kind of thick white paint that to my untrained eye looked more like 'liquid caulk' than paint) to cover any wood that wasn’t primed. They had originally offered to include in the original quote doing the finish painting over the pre-primed Hardie Board, but I opted to do that myself. Was good to know they could do that though.) 14. He did a final clean up and magnetically swept the lawn all around the area again for nails. 15. I highly recommend these guys. l

Everything went very well with our roof replacement. For the estimate, Mr. Townsend was on time and was very professional. He was willing to spend as much time as needed to answer all of my questions. He provided an estimate within a day. Once we had contracted with them, our roof was replaced in a matter of days (I realize we were lucky that an opening came up so quickly in their schedule). They did everything they said they would do and there were no extra charges. The crew did not damage any of our property and cleaned up very nicely. The roof itself looks great. The only problem we had was that our dryer stopped working about a month after the install. We have a sensor on our dryer, which won't work if there is lint in the ducts. Fortunately, my husband thought to check the new dryer vent they installed on the roof. It had a screen on it, and the lint from our dryer had already clogged it up. We removed the screen and the dryer is working again. I am putting this on here because it is an unusual problem that might help someone else.
