We did not have a good experience with Leister Construction at all. He did not even put up a sign in our yard to advertise his work. That should have been a red flag. There is no detailed plan by Jason. I never felt he spent enough time in our kitchen to figure out how this was going to go. We gave him our floor plan and he just muddled through it. Our supervisor, James, had to take all the heat but he did his best and we were thankful for him. DO get a detailed schedule. We asked and asked for one. Finally got one but it was not followed. According to that, our house was to be finished October 16th. Keep your own book keeping. Their gal is so out of it that she would send us incorrect bills and even sent a message telling us the project is complete and expected final payment. We had not even had a walk through because there were lingering items left undone or not in satisfactory condition. We also heard from a mutual friend that Jason was telling her that we were behind in our payments and paying him. We were irrate because that was not true and how unprofessional of him to talk about clients to a 3rd party. Hold out money until the end when you either think things are complete or you just want to be done with the nightmare. Our phase 2 will be with a well qualified, professional company that we respect.
Description of Work: Jason Leister came to our house to give us an estimate for kitchen/bath remodel on a 1940 home. From the beginning, I felt he was not listening or giving us a detailed plan. A remodel of a 1940 home was way out of his league. He did not anticipate the challenges of an older home. Jason gave us the HIGHEST bid (even more than a company that is known for their excellence but with a price tag). We told him our budget and he adjusted his price so my husband wanted to use him. I had 3 people tell me we were making a big mistake. The first 3 days we were asked to sign a change order for each day because something took longer or cost him more. The project was to take 4-6 weeks. It started September 3, 2012 and as of 1/29/2013, there is still an issue with a check. Yes, they had lost 2 of our checks and Jason had been leaving unprofessional emails and messages. Anyway, the project was one clustered mess after another. From constant change orders because we just assumed that this would be turn key but Jason Leister construction is not detailed unless you pin them down. Things were done out of order. I walked in on subs covering up the kitchen ceiling that needed to be redone, with new product. I found that they were putting kitchen cabinets in when there were holes and gaps from where the old ones were pulled out. The cabinet company came back 3 times to try and make things right. The counter tops guys came back twice because they messed up a windowsill and needed to redo some other areas. The man that did patched the wood floors was really good but we could not afford to use him to redo all the floors. He gave his price to his boss, then his boss added on to it and then it went to JL who added his profit. By that time, it was too much. Delay after delay. POOR communication. Horrible book keeping. Jason charges a "Supervision fee" but did not come around when we were home. We were unhappy with him but he would have his sub take the heat instead of making the customer happy and talking to us face to face. We lost all respect when he knew things were rocky but did not address us in person. He made no attempt to make things right. His roofer got into an argument with one of our other workers. The roofer was yelling at his head roofer on our roof one day for using someone that was not experienced. We had to have them come out to fix it TWICE. Painting had to be redone twice. The list goes on and on and on.

The work began on Thursday, November 3rd. Leister Construction employs superb craftspeople. The carpenter, for example, noticed that the panels that had cracks in it would probably not stand up to the sanding process. He asked for permission to remove the panels and replace them with hand made panels. He replaced the damaged panels with new panels made out of ash and were mitred and carved so that they would match the remaining panels. I was speechless when I saw the completed work. The carpenter’s work was meticulous. I couldn’t tell the difference, when the door was finished, between the repaired and the original panels. The carpenter was finished by the end of Thursday, right on schedule. The painter came on Friday morning; he primed the door carefully and left it to dry over the weekend. The painting was completed on Monday; then he returned on Tuesday to finish touching up the door, attach the new weather stripping, and clean up the in set windows. Both workmen were careful not to track dirt or paint into the house. They both cleaned up the area so that there was nothing left for me to do. And the painter returned on Friday after the job was finished to make sure that there wasn’t anything else that I needed to have done. They were friendly and easy to work with. The “new” door (it really looks new) cost $941.50. The work was worth every penny. I would hire Mr. Leister to make other repairs to my house in a heartbeat, and am already thinking about asking him to repair my stucco.
Description of Work: I contacted Jason Leister to repair and paint my front door at the suggestion of James Allen of Allen Masonry, a contractor who has high ratings on Angie’s List. I have a heavy French door with glass insets and wooden panels that were very worn and cracked. Neighbor kids had egged my front door a few years ago, and the egg became part of the finish. After doing an on sight, free evaluation, Mr. Leister sent me a proposal in an email attachment; he agreed to repair minor cracks to the sidelights, repair the separation panels of the stationary French style door, sand and prep the doors with putty, and then prime and paint the two parts of the door, as well as replace the weather stripping. He directed me to Sherman Williams to buy the paint because I could get a discount. But Mr. Leister paid for everything except the paint. Mr. Leister’s first visit was on time, and every other transaction was done in a timely, professional manner. He emailed me a detailed proposal for my approval, and it arrived a few days after the first visit. He sent me names of people to contact for recommendations (the people I spoke to praised Mr. Leister’s work) and copies of his insurers. etc. If I had to leave him an email message or a voice mail message, he was sure to contact me no later than the next day. Even before the work on the door started, I felt reassured that my small job mattered to him as much as any of the large jobs he typically does.
