In 2009 I contracted with H and K to replace my existing roof. The work was done without my supervision while I was working outside the country at the time. I returned to Jacksonville for a short time after the roof was installed and paid the remainder of my bill without noticing my damaged gutters and a dryer vent that was not connected to the roof vent fixture. Two years later, in 2011, I returned to the U.S. to work for my present employer. During my first year home I noticed that the gutters were holding water in places that had been previously dry. Upon closer inspection it was obvious that the gutters had been dented and bent by the roofer's latters. At that point I was not going to pursue the matter with H and K. Then in February 2014 I noticed that flashing around my chimney was leaking, so I called H and K and left a message (nobody has ever answered their business number when I called). The following Monday I get a call from James Hammett and he and his helper arrive at my home to determine that the flashing is leaking. The next day someone else from another company (Lockhart Roofing) arrives at the end of the day to tack down bubbles in the counterflashing and apply a sealant to the bottom of the counterflashing that was not originally present (a quick fix, but not the proper fix). At this point I was expecting Hammett to return and check the effectivenss of this repair, but he never did. I called H and K and left messages with no response. Hammett's mobile number voice mail box was full, so I was not able to leave him a voice mail. The next week I drafted this letter: August Kokal Dba H & K Roofing 1540 Monument Road, #8 Jacksonville, FL 32225 Subject: Contract Dated 07 May 2009 Mr. Kokal: On Friday, 21 February, I discovered a roof leak in the area of the chimney flashing that you installed in 2009. I made multiple telephone calls to your business number that morning and afternoon, leaving two voice messages on your answering machine, because no one answered the calls. Monday morning your associate, James Hammett, called and advised me that he would evaluate the situation that afternoon. Hammett and his helper from another company (Lockhart Construction) determined that leaks existed and that they were related to the flashing around the chimney. Apparently the flashing had failed causing a bubble in the overlying counter flashing. His solution was to ?tack down the bubbles? with fasteners and seal the bottom of the counter flashing. Late Tuesday afternoon (around 5:00 pm) your subcontractor, Christopher Lanham from Lockhart, arrived to do the cosmetic repair. After completing his task I asked him if he was going to fix a dryer duct defect that I also explained to Hammett. Lanham evaluated the duct and roof and determined that he did not have the parts to properly install the duct. Before he left I requested that he contact Hammett and ask him to return and check the effectiveness of the chimney repair and to address the dryer duct defect in workmanship. Hammett has not contacted me and he does not answer his telephone. His voice mail box is full, so I was not able to leave a message. In consideration of these facts it appears that you have no intention of complying with our contract terms and that I must list the specific defects that I have noted since my new roof was installed before I take further action: 1. Roof leaks in the area of chimney flashing 2. Related interior water damage to my ceiling adjacent to the chimney flashing leaks 3. Dryer exhaust duct not attached to the roof vent assembly causing hot moist dryer exhaust and lint to accumulated in my attic 4. Preexisting gutters were damaged during the roof installation, specifically: (a) Gutters and fasteners were bent such that stagnant water now accumulates in areas away from downspouts (b) Gutter sections were deliberately cut in places that cause water to spill from the gutters during heavy rainfall (c) At least one gutter fastener/support was damaged and removed and not replaced (d) Gutter outside edges sustained damage from ladders used to access the roof. Please contact me to schedule times to remedy these warranted defects in workmanship so that I can avoid any further damage to my home. Regards, I sent it certified mail and it was returned several weeks later without being picked up by H and K. At that point I filed a complaint with the FL Department Busness and Professional Regulation. Three and a half weeks later Hammett finally calls me back to arrange a meeting to resolve these other issues. He and his partner Sean arrive to repair the dryer vent with a make-shift connection to the roof fixtrure and then argue about the fact that it was the brick on my chimney that was the leak problem and not the chimney flashing which they had repaired in the prior months. The following week I was going to be at home all week except for Thursday and I told them that they could arrange any time except Thursday morning to have my gutters repaired. Monday morning Hammett calls to arrange a time Monday afternoon then calls me back to tell me that the gutter man needs the color of my (painted) gutter before they come to do the repairs. I tell him to come out with whatever light cream color they have and it will suffice since I'm going paint them anyhow. After several excuses and no-shows Hammett and his gutter "experts" arrive the morning I am not there (Thursday) to replace the damaged end caps and reattach the section of gutter that was hanging down on my roof. His gutter "experts" then told him that the damaged and bent gutters were installed improperly and they were not damaged by his roofers' ladders. I had the contractor who originally installed my gutters in 1998 assess the damage and his opinion was that the gutters were dented and bent from their original slope by ladders and/or heavy equipment. He gave me an estimate of over $600.00 to replace and reslope the remaining gutters. The DBPR has determined that H and K has done enough to satisfy the warranty requirements and that I should litigate the remaining damages.
Description of Work: Replaced the asphault shingles on my house in 2009.

All of the leaks are returning because they did shoddy work. Responsiveness was very bad. They lost materials and I had to resend materials to them 4 times. I was working with them through a contractor. In the end, there were things I got charged for that they didn't even do according to the new person I talked to. I would say the price was average.

They are the best roofing company in Jacksonville. On a scale of 1 to 10 I give them a 20. The price is extremely competitive and reasonable. I recommend them all the time.

I called H & K and scheduled for them to locate a leak in the roof of my rental home. He initially found a few rusty nails under the shingles and repaired that area. After another rain, the area still leaked so they repaired an area further up the roof. That stopped the leak. The second leak was pouring through the fixtures in the living area. Mr. Hammett used a hose to locate the leak and sealed it properly. I was pleased with his methods for finding the leak. I did have a little trouble contacting him throughout the process but often when I finally got in touch with him, he had already fixed the problem and just hadn't contacted me yet.

They returned my call and came out and gave me an estimate. While there, they listened to what I said was going on and found a hole in the gutter that went right into a bedroom wall that was missed by another company. I set up a date for them to return and they came out and made all of the repairs and we have not had any leaks since. I highly recommend H & K Roofing as they actually listened to my description and found a most unusual problem. They were very thorough and did a great job!
Description of Work: Randy and Jim repaired our roof. They tore out both sides of the valley and resealed it so water could run off the roof properly. They also resealed a hole at the top of the valley. They also installed metal inside the gutter to fill a hole and resealed it.

After I called them, they scheduled an appointment to come out and look at it 3 days later. They did show up on time, but acted like they did not know anything about metal roofs. He could not give me an exact estimate and said that he would have to talk to his boss, do some research, and he would call me back. I never received a call from them. It has been 2 weeks. I wish they would have just told me that they could not do the job for me.
Description of Work: I had them give me an estimate of $6000 on what it would cost to replace my existing metal roof with new metal. The square footage of my home is 1400.

These guys are great! I called and left a message. They returned the call promptly and were at the house, within 30 minutes. They identified the problem quickly, old and cracked skylight frame, and they inspected from the roof, to double check for any other problem. They offered to replace the skylight (one for $400 and both for $700), and they would have done the work the same day (very important with roof leaks). Because we wanted to use the original skylight installer, we did not go with H&K, but we certainly felt good about their competence, responsiveness and price. There was no charge for the visit.
Description of Work: We had a leak in the roof near a skylight.

Very professional service. Timely and work done well. Free estimate and they got to the work the very next day (unlike some other roofers we had contacted). Work was done in a few hours.
Description of Work: We had a leak where rainwater was flowing over the flashing that was installed by the builder. H&K "removed old shingles in valley and replaced with new shingles and resealed the wall and valley".

I called H & K based on the reports they had received on Angie's List. I talked to Chris, who promised to come out & see me within a few days. As promised, he called back & offered to meet me on site. He crawled up into the attic, checked the roof from the outside, & gave me a detailed diagnosis & a cure. He also quoted me a price which I considered very reasonable, having had past experiences with other roofers. I asked how soon he could get to me & he answered he could be out the next day with his whole crew. His object was to tear up the perforated membrane, replace the waterlogged plywood underneath, & reseal the new roof in one day. H & K did exactly as they promised. What impressed me a lot was that they never tried to flim-flam me. They were honest & straight-forward in their diagnosis, the cure, & their time-line. In my book, any contractor who delivers 100% on their word is worth gold. These guys are pros. I wouldn't even dream of calling anybody else for roof issues.
Description of Work: We had two leaks in our ocean-front condo roof that were in need of repair. Water was seeping in under the roof decking and onto the attic joists. The moisture was creating a situation that would soon turn into a serious mold problem if not fixed promptly.

We hired two other companies to do the job, but they failed. We then went with H&K, which we used earlier to fix another leak. H&K knows what it is doing and is very detail-oriented, even picking up nails off the driveway. It was a great job.
Description of Work: A leak had developed in a large portion of our roof. H&K Roofing replaced the shingles and did reinforcement work on a corner of the roof.
